Abstract The problem of small bit error rate is actual in fiber Raman amplifiers. Our experimental data on the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with backward pumping as a base of optical noise evaluation are presented in this paper. Raman gain spectrum for useful Stokes low-powered signal is calculated and compared with obtained spectrum of non-coherent ASE noise. It is shown that output optical signal has better gain than the amplified spontaneous emission that leads to appreciable growth of output optical signal-to-noise ratio.

The treatment is particularly applicable to extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray laser schemes to inject laser harmonic radiation as a seed into (1) plasma laser amplifiers and (2) free-electron lasers. Simple expressions and calculations are given for the minimum injected irradiance required for amplification of the injected seed beam to exceed ASE from the amplifier, including the effects of gain saturation, assuming one dimensional radiative transfer.

Abstract In this paper, the effects of pump pulse fluence on the output energy and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of a femtosecond regenerative amplifier are investigated. One can easily enhance the output energy of laser amplifiers by increasing their pump fluence. This in turn can increase the ASE and reduce the performance of amplifiers in terms of output beam quality, beam stability, etc. This effect would eventually lead to what is called ‘temporal intensity contrast deterioration’. In this work, it is shown that an optimum state of the pump pulse fluence can indeed optimize the amount of the output energy from a regenerative amplifier without much reducing the performance of the amplifier due to the higher ASE. Temporal gain characteristics were employed to achieve this optimum value for a better design, performance, and maintenance of femtosecond laser amplifiers. The results of the current study can be effectively used in designing a wide range of regenerative amplifiers for femtosecond pulses.

Reversible oxygen induced emission quenching of both the Spontaneous Emission (SE) and the Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) waveguides is demonstrated. We show that ASE shows a stronger quenching than SE, up to about 6.2 times, but also a stronger decrease when the excitation density increases. We conclude that the fast increase of the ASE decay rate is the main process in determining the ASE detection sensitivity, limiting the potentiality of sensitivity improvement of ASE with respect to SE.

AbstractIn order to achieve the truncated amplified spontaneous emission pulse, the method of timeshare quenching was proposed in this paper. When the original pulse of the amplified spontaneous emission is 16.72 ns, the obtained best results show that the pulse width is truncated to 2.48 ns, and the shortening ratio is approximately 6.7. By analyzing the 12 acquisition results of the continuous amplified spontaneous emission truncation, 2.59 ± 0.05 ns amplified spontaneous emission pulse was obtained. The experimental results showed that the stability of the truncated pulse width is well. This method is applicable to truncate the ASE pulse in KrF excimer laser. It is significantly to the research of the inertial confinement fusion.

Chemically synthesized zigzag-edged nanographenes (NG) have recently demonstrated great success as the active laser units in solution-processed organic distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. Here, we report the first observation of dual amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a large-size NG derivative (with 12 benzenoid rings) dispersed in a polystyrene film. ASE is observed simultaneously at the 685 and 739 nm wavelengths, which correspond to different transitions of the photoluminescence spectrum. Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy has been used to ascertain the underlying photophysical processes taking place in the films. DFB lasers, based on these materials and top-layer nanostructured polymeric resonators (i.e., one or two-dimensional surface relief gratings), have been fabricated and characterized. Lasers emitting close to either one of the two possible ASE wavelengths, or simultaneously at both of them, have been prepared by proper selection of the resonator parameters.

Abstract Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was once considered a harmful parasitic effect. This is because ASE will reduce the number of the inverted population in the gain medium, thereby reducing the efficiency of lasers. However, the output characteristics of ASE make it applicable to many studies. Therefore, the experimental settings and beam output characteristics of different doped laser ASE sources are summarized in this review. The summarization begins with the characteristics of ASE, such as threshold condition. Then, two doped fiber lasers are introduced. Based on erbium-doped fiber, an ASE source with high stability is made by measuring the best parameters and selecting a suitable structure. The ytterbium-doped fiber can benefit Q-switch pulses and high-order Stokes generation by suppressing the self-saturation of ASE and offering gain for ASE, respectively. Besides, three different ASE sources based on Nd-doped laser crystals are presented. They are spatially selective ASE sources that achieve high-intensity, narrow-bandwidth output pulses and Q-switching in a cavityless laser. Additionally, the performance of the ASE source can also be improved by doping with gold nanoparticles, Gd3+, and other particles.

AbstractWe demonstrate a monolithic single frequency Tm-doped fiber amplifier with output power of 51.5 W. A single frequency fiber laser at 1.97 $\mathrm {\mu} $m is amplified by a cascaded master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system with all-fiber configuration. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of the main fiber amplifier is 45%. No amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) or stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect is observed in the fiber amplifier. The output power could be further scaled by launching more pump power.

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are highly promising materials for light amplification thanks to their efficient photoluminescence, tunable emission wavelength and low-cost synthesis. Unfortunately, CQDs are suffering from band-edge state degeneracy which demands multiple excitons to achieve population inversion. As a result, non-radiative Auger recombination increases the lasing threshold and limits the gain lifetime. Here, benefiting from the negative charging, we demonstrate that the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold is controllable in a device where CQD film is exposed to an external electric field. Specifically, singly charged CQDs lower the threshold due to the preexisting electron in the conduction band, while strongly enhanced Auger recombination in doubly charged CQDs stymies the ASE. Experimental results and kinetic equation model show that ASE threshold reduces 10% even if our device only charges ~17% of the CQD population. Our results open new possibilities for controlling exciton recombination dynamics and achieving electrically pumped CQD lasers.

Over the past decade, interest about metal halide perovskites has rapidly increased, as they can find wide application in optoelectronic devices. Nevertheless, although thermal evaporation is crucial for the development and engineering of such devices based on multilayer structures, the optical properties of thermally deposited perovskite layers (spontaneous and amplified spontaneous emission) have been poorly investigated. This paper is a study from a nano- to micro- and macro-scale about the role of light-emitting species (namely free carriers and excitons) and trap states in the spontaneous emission of thermally evaporated thin layers of CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite after wet air UV light trap passivation. The map of light emission from grains, carried out by SNOM at the nanoscale and by micro-PL techniques, clearly indicates that free and localized excitons (EXs) are the dominant light-emitting species, the localized excitons being the dominant ones in the presence of crystallites. These species also have a key role in the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) process: for higher excitation densities, the relative contribution of localized EXs basically remains constant, while a clear competition between ASE and free EXs spontaneous emission is present, which suggests that ASE is due to stimulated emission from the free EXs.

AbstractColloidal quantum dots (QDs) are attractive materials for realizing solution-processable laser diodes that could benefit from size-controlled emission wavelengths, low optical-gain thresholds and ease of integration with photonic and electronic circuits1–7. However, the implementation of such devices has been hampered by fast Auger recombination of gain-active multicarrier states1,8, poor stability of QD films at high current densities9,10 and the difficulty to obtain net optical gain in a complex device stack wherein a thin electroluminescent QD layer is combined with optically lossy charge-conducting layers11–13. Here we resolve these challenges and achieve amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from electrically pumped colloidal QDs. The developed devices use compact, continuously graded QDs with suppressed Auger recombination incorporated into a pulsed, high-current-density charge-injection structure supplemented by a low-loss photonic waveguide. These colloidal QD ASE diodes exhibit strong, broadband optical gain and demonstrate bright edge emission with instantaneous power of up to 170 μW.

In this paper, we report optical characteristics of an organic single crystal oligomer 5,5⁗-diphenyl-2,2′:5′,2″:5″,2‴:5‴,2⁗-quinquethiophene (P5T). P5T crystal is a thiophene/phenylene co-oligomer that possesses better charge mobility as well as photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) as compared to other organic materials. Stimulated emission in P5T is investigated via amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) measurements within broad pump energies ranging from 35.26 to 163.34 µJ/cm2. An Nd-YAG femtosecond-tunable pulsed laser is used as a pump energy source for the ASE measurements of P5T crystals at an excitation wavelength of 445 nm. The ASE spectra exhibit optical amplification in P5T crystals at a 625 nm peak wavelength with a lower threshold energy density (Eth) ≈ 52.64 μJ/cm2. P5T also demonstrates higher optical gain with a value of 72 cm−1, that is calculated by using the variable stripe-length method. The value of PLQE is measured to be 68.24% for P5T. This study proposes potential applications of P5T single crystals in organic solid state lasers, photodetectors, and optical amplifiers.

Implementation of pulsed-pump technique in fiber amplifier is highly useful in the situation of low repetition rate and high energy pulses operation. In this paper, the ASE (Amplified Spontaneous Emission) dynamics simulation in a pulsed-pumped ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber amplifier is presented for the first time, which provides important guidance about optimizing the pulsed-pump mode. The simulations of ASE dynamics are carried out by solving the rate equations and light power propagation equations in fiber using the finite elements analysis method, including variations of ASE output power at two terminals of the fiber in the time span from 0 ~ 740μs after pump light injection. Furthermore, a way of optimizing signal injection time is discussed.

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold in CsPbBr3 quantum dot films is systematically reduced by introducing high quality TiO2 compact layer grown by atomic-layer deposition. Uniform and pinhole-free TiO2 films of thickness 10, 20 and 50 nm are used as a substrates for CsPbBr3 quantum dot films to enhance amplified spontaneous emission performance. The reduction is attributed indirectly to the improved morphology of TiO2 compact layer and subsequently CsPbBr3 active layer as grown on better quality substrates. This is quantified by the reduced roughness of the obtained films to less than 5 nm with 50 nm TiO2 substrate. Considering the used growth method for the quantum dot film, the improved substrate morphology maintains better the structure of the used quantum dots in the precursor solution. This results in better absorption and hence lower threshold of ASE. Besides that, the improved film quality results further in reducing light scattering and hence additional slight optical enhancement. The work demonstrates a potential venue to reduce the amplified spontaneous emission threshold of quantum dot films and therefore enhanced their optical performance.

A microcavity laser with linear polarization finds practical applications in metrology and biomedical imaging. Through a pulsed light excitation, the polarization characteristics of amplified spontaneous emissions (ASEs) from ten-period ZnO/Zn0.8Mg0.2O multiple quantum wells (MQWs) on a C-Plane sapphire substrate were investigated at room temperature. Unlike unpolarized spontaneous emissions, with 35 meV of energy differences between the C and AB bands, the ASE of MQWs revealed transverse-electric (TE) polarization under the edge emission configuration. The excited ASE from the surface normal of the polar ZnO/Zn0.8Mg0.2O MQWs with hexagonal symmetry revealed linear polarization under the pump of the stripe line through the focusing by using a cylindrical lens. The polarization direction of ASE is independent of the pump polarization but always perpendicular to the pump stripe, even if the cylindrical lens is rotated 90 degrees because of the gain-guiding effect.

The effect of injecting of C-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from C-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) on the performance of L-band EDFA is demonstrated using a circulator and broadband fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Injecting a large amount of ASE (VOA=0 dB) clamps the gain at 15.2 dB from -40 to -10 dBm with a gain variation of less than 0.3 dB. Injecting a small amount of ASE (attenuation of 20 dB and above) improves the small signal gain with a negligible noise figure penalty compared to that of an amplifier without the ASE injection. A maximum gain improvement of 3.5 dB is obtained at an attenuation of 20 dB. These results show that the ASE injection technique can be used either for gain improvement or gain clamping in L-band EDFA.

While designing an efficient Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system, optimization of the channel separation and amplifier separation are required to minimize the non-linear effects (FWM and SRS) along with the ASE noise. In this paper, theoretical investigations of the optical DWDM systems have been presented to minimize the bit error rate (BER) by optimizing inter-channel separation and inter-amplifier separation at different data rates considering the combined effect of SRS, FWM, ASE, receiver and beat noises.

A hybrid double cladding erbium–ytterbium co-doped fiber (EYDF) amplifier with a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) active fiber is demonstrated in this study. The hybrid gain fiber with an SMS structure is composed of two kinds of EYDFs with 6 and 12 μm core diameters. The transmission spectra of the SMS fiber structure were theoretically analyzed and the simulation results indicated that the maximum loss in the 1~1.1 μm band where the Yb-band amplified spontaneous emission (Yb-ASE) located, was much larger than that of the 1.5-μm band because of the wavelength difference. The power performance and spectra properties of the hybrid fiber amplifier were theoretically and experimentally analyzed and compared with a typical uniform fiber amplifier under the same conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that this hybrid fiber amplifier can suppress the Yb-ASE by over 12 dB and increase the slope efficiency by more than 2%, but the ASE in the 1.5-μm band increases by 2~3 dB. This work provides a possible method to enable EYDF amplifiers to suppress the Yb-ASE and overcome the pump bottleneck effect.

We demonstrate wavelength-wavelength correlations of classical broad-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) photons emitted by an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in a wavelength regime around 1530 nm. We then apply these classical correlated photons in the framework of a real-world ghost spectroscopy experiment at a wavelength of 1533 nm to acetylene ( C 2 H 2 ) reproducing the characteristic absorption features of the C-H stretch and rotational bands. This proof-of-principle experiment confirms the generalization of an ASE source concept offering an attractive light source for classical ghost spectroscopy. It is expected that this will enable further disseminating ghost modality schemes by exploiting classical correlated photons towards applications in chemistry, physics and engineering.

A high-power, narrow-linewidth, continuous-wave, thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) based on a master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) was experimentally demonstrated. The main oscillator (seed source) yielded 0.64 W of narrow-linewidth laser output at a central wavelength of 1940.32 nm and a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 0.05 nm. The output narrow-linewidth laser from the main oscillator was amplified by two-stage, cladding-pumped, thulium-doped, all-fiber amplifiers. The main amplifier yielded 26 W of narrow-linewidth laser at a central wavelength of 1940.33 nm. The slope efficiency of the main amplifier was approximately 55.6%. Significant residual pumping light component in the output laser was not observed. During the amplification process, no stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, strong amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) effect, and parasitic lasers were observed at the reverse monitoring end. Moreover, the output power was only limited by the incident pump power and the output power had a good stability in a 50 min monitoring period.

The spectral characteristics of the relative intensity noise (RIN) of two amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources are experimentally measured. An Er-doped fiber superfluorescent source (EDF-SFS) is investigated and compared with a super-luminescent diode (SLD) source, using a simple tunable fiber Bragg grating filter-based system. Experimental results based on normal ASE operation conditions showed that the RIN distribution of the EDF-SFS is correlated with its emission spectral profile, which is different from the results observed using the SLD source. This finding shows for the first time that an EDF-SFS based ASE has fundamentally different RIN characteristics from other known existing spontaneous emission broadband sources. The amplifying process of the EDF-SFS is discussed and confirmed using a rate equation-based simulation.

This accumulated ASE noise may limit the effective amplification due to saturation effect and affects the receivers bit error ratio (BER). In this paper, we show the impact of ASE noise in transmission fiber by using three different modulation formats: 33%DPSK, 66%DPSK and DPSK. In recent years, optical fiber communication system began to use the DPSK (Differential Phase Shift Keying) format to replace the traditional OOK format, which has been intensively investigated in numerical and experimental works.

We show amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in the near infrared (913-930 nm) from the layer of a cyanine dye-doped 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) for laser power above 0.08 GW/cm2, the layer was prepared with the solution of 1,1',3,3,3',3'- hexamethyl-4,4',5,5'-di-benzo-2,2'-indotricarbocyanine perchlorate (NK-2014) dissolved in 5CB. Oriented NK-2014 molecules in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) must have very high amplified spontaneous emission efficiency.

In this work, we demonstrate a three-stage all-fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system emitting over 1 W of the linearly polarized narrow-linewidth pulse output power with 10 kHz pulse repetition frequency and 400 ns pulse width without the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at ~1.5 µm. Initially, we analyze the effect of the ASE on the first derivative of backscatter intensity via a contrast experiment. The experiment results show that the noise intensity with angle of inclination is affected by the ASE of the amplifier, thereby decreasing the signal-to-noise ratio of the output power. The laser is characterized by a very low or no ASE level of the output signal when acquiring the first derivative of backscatter intensity with low noise. This condition provides a reference for improving the properties of the laser used for cloud detection.

Basic characteristics of organic-dye doped polymer optical fibers (DPOFs) are demonstrated. The devices contain laser dye, such as Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and Rhodamine B (RB) in the core region. Firstly, amplification characteristics of DPOF amplifiers (PO-FAs) excited by a pulse-operated, doubled Nd:YAG laser are demonstrated, e.g., a 250 mm-length of RB-POFA gives 1 kW (30 dB) of amplified signal at 591 nm. Next, an all solid state system of RB DPOF laser (POFL) is discussed by numerical simulation and the experimental result of high-power amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) by strong excitation of DPOF is shown.

With the optimized side pumped module structure, three laser diode arrays rotating symmetrically pump the Nd: Glass rod. The size of the Nd: Glass rod is Φ2 mm×75mm, with the doping concentration of 4at%. The surface of both ends of the rod coated with antireflection film at 1053nm, the rod was tilted 1.5°in order to eliminate the oscillation of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). The seed, with energy 10μJ, operating frequency of 1Hz, pulse width 3ns, output wavelength 1053nm, through the Nd: Glass amplifiers reaches 70 times stable high-gain when the pumping power is 8.2kW and the pulse-width is 400μs. Meanwhile, the fluorescence distribution of the amplifier is homogeneous.

Nowadays, the search for novel active materials for laser devices is proceeding faster and faster thanks to the development of innovative materials able to combine excellent stimulated emission properties with low-cost synthesis and processing techniques. In this context, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties are typically investigated to characterize the potentiality of a novel material for lasers, and a low ASE threshold is used as the key parameter to select the best candidate. However, several different methods are currently used to define the ASE threshold, hindering meaningful comparisons among various materials. In this work, we quantitatively investigate the ASE threshold dependence on the method used to determine it in thin films of dye-polymer blends and lead halide perovskites. We observe a systematic ASE threshold dependence on the method for all the different tested materials, and demonstrate that the best method choice depends on the kind of information one wants to extract. In particular, the methods that provide the lowest ASE threshold values are able to detect the excitation regime of early-stage ASE, whereas methods that are mostly spread in the literature return higher thresholds, detecting the excitation regime in which ASE becomes the dominant process in the sample emission. Finally, we propose a standard procedure to properly characterize the ASE threshold, in order to allow comparisons between different materials.

The all-fiber ASE source is an intriguing tool in the fields of super-fluorescence detection, coherent measurement and spectrum analysis technology. We experimentally demonstrate a continuous all-fiber amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source based on amaster-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system, which aims at achieving high power and frequency stability. The seed source is homemade ASE low power super-fluorescence source with 200 mW. The system employs large-mode-area Yb3+-doped double-clad fiber (LMA-DCF), and the maximum power can reach 1.73 kW at a center wavelength of 1079.36 nm, and can maintain an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 79.13%. During 30 min of real-time monitoring, the ASE source system did not generate a nonlinear effect, and power fluctuation was less than 2%.

A lower peak signal of roughly 1 dB at 635 nm was obtained with a shorter 5 m Pr3 + doped fiber and a higher pump power of 300 mW. The impact of wavelength and pump power variations on the amplifier's optical output power's spontaneous enhanced emission (EEM) is examined. Finally, the ionic interaction (general-purpose conversion effect) in the low-power amplifier signal is analyzed by taking into account various values of the upconversion factor. Ultraviolet absorption measurements on 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin (Cl) and its rigid analogue C102 in which the 7-amino group is structurally prevented from twisting in n-butyl acetate (nBuOAc) solutions containing submolar concentrations of n-butyl alcohol showed weak 2:1 alcohol:dye complexation. These results contrast with those from fluorescence measurements which revealed a 1:1 alcohol:dye excited state complex for the Cl dye. These results together with N2 laser excited amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), and laser gain measurements on Cl and C102 in nBuOAc with alcohol or acetonitrile co-solvent show that dual ASE from Cl originates from a quasi-equilibrium concentration of hydrogen-bonded or acetonitrile-solvated excited state complex. The results are inconsistent with a TICT-nBuOAc exciplex for Cl in nBuOAc. The laser gain of the twin ASE peaks at 420 nm and 455 nm from Cl can be tuned by adding a small quantity of hydroxylic co-solvent to dried nBuOAc. ASE was found to be a selective probe for a H-bonded Cl complex whose fluorescence is normally obscured by that from the "free" dye.
