Robert Thornton of East Newton, Yorkshire (c.1367-c.1465) is the most important scribe of late-medieval England: the only amateur scribe we know to be responsible for the concurrent production of multiple manuscript anthologies. This project constitutes the first extended study devoted exclusively to Robert Thornton and his books that treats them both as independent and as in conversation with each other. By uniting the concerns of codicology and cultural history, we can gain new insights into the effect of each manuscript’s textual sequences while also considering the effect of the distribution of texts among both manuscripts. Moreover, by examining Thornton’s romances in their original material and social contexts, we can read them as they would have been encountered by Thornton and his intended readers, and gain insight into the social and cultural anxieties that may have led to their organization and distribution among his two books. Chapter 1 compares Thornton’s compilations to those of analogous manuscripts, and demonstrates that Thornton took a more active role than most contemporary compilers did in rearranging and editing his texts in order to emphasize shared themes and interests within his books. Chapters 2 and 3 of this dissertation examine the nature of each of Thornton’s manuscripts in turn. Chapter 2 demonstrates that Lincoln Cathedral Library MS 91 is a book meant to be used in the maintenance of social, spiritual, and physical health, written to be a useful tool for as wide a range of people as possible. Chapter 3 demonstrates that British Library MS Additional 31042 is a history book that traces the development of Christian civilization from its beginnings in the Holy Land to its present form in Thornton’s England. This dissertation then assesses Thornton’s whole library. Chapter 4 examines the literary contexts of Thornton’s romances, demonstrating that they are divided into thematic groups that emphasise conflict between the interests of individuals and the interests of the individual and communal identities with which they associate. Chapter 5 examines the social context of Thornton’s romances, demonstrating that Thornton employs the discourse of English nationalism produced during the Council of Constance (1414-1418), and that he therefore distributed his romances in order to emphasize England’s superiority to France.

The Times in the 1860's was the most powerful newspaper in Britain and the world. Through the labours of its exceptionally talented staff in London, the provinces, and abroad, it provided readers with vital information on major questions of the day, and instructed them on its editorial page as to the opinions they should hold. This thesis examines the record of The Times in covering and commenting on the American Civil War. When war threatened in America, Times editor John Delane quickly sent his experienced foreign correspondent, William Howard Russell, to supplement his regular correspondent in New York. Russell was in place to report the beginning of the war, the retreat from the first battle of Bull Run, and the Trent Crisis of November/December 1861. Refused permission in the spring of 1862 to accompany Northern armies on the first major campaign of the war, he angrily returned to England, In this period of just over a year. The Times moved from being the foreign newspaper most educated Americans wanted to read, to being the foreign newspaper most Americans vehemently disliked. Contemporary observers charged then and later that The Times's coverage of the war poisoned relations between Britain and the United States for a generation. This study analyzes this remarkable charge by exploring the private opinions of key players in the drama. The Times is unique among newspapers in possessing an unusually complete archive of letters written by its editors and correspondents. In addition to these letters and Russell's diaries, the papers of William Seward, American Secretary of State, and two of his diplomats, John Bigelow and Henry Sanford, the papers of Times correspondent Bancroft Davis and the diaries of American Minister Charles Francis Adams have been tapped to document American reactions to The Times. Lord Palmerston's papers have been consulted to determine the relationship between the policies advocated by The Times and those of Palmerston and his foreign secretary, Lord Russell. The major concentration of the study has been on the period just before the war up to the time of the Trent crisis, for it was then that The Times's policy was forged. While it has not been possible to examine every issue that was debated in The Times during this four year war, the study goes beyond Russell's tour to describe the reportage of the five other Times correspondents in America, and the part they played in ruining or rescuing The Times's reputation.

The manuscript Great Britain, London; British Library, Egerton 3307 has never been studied in its entirety. The majority of literature which pertains to the manuscript is primarily concerned with questions of original location of compilation and all but ignores the codicological aspects. Discussion of the music in the book has generally approached the constituent parts of the Egerton manuscript separately, dealing either with one or the other. This thesis revises the assessment of the source; following a complete codicological and palaeographic examination, undertaken here for the first time, the thesis addresses questions regarding the compilation of the MS, among them the physical similarities between the Holy Week music and the carol music, the original location of compilation, it re-examines the literature on the carol and it proposes for the first time that the two sections of the Egerton manuscript contain between them a repertory of liturgical music representative of a specific ceremonial. A musical stylistic analysis, focused mainly on the two Passions, suggests a probable musical stylistic link between many of the pieces, which parallels the continuity in the physical aspects of this historically important manuscript and affirms the unity proposed on physical and thematic grounds. The adherence to the lay rite of Sarum and the inclusion of the carols within the ceremonial point to a secular institution, for which St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, during Lancastrian rule in the 15th century, seems eminently qualified both in situation as a royal institution and as a centre for musical innovation.

This thesis is a case study of the Swedish American Bibliography (SWAM), a special subject database in the Swedish Royal Library’s library information system, LIBRIS. The research intentions are to explore and define the bibliography, and, by resolving issues concerning the responsibility for the bibliography, to fulfill the broader intention of clearing the way for its continuation. During the academic year 2006/2007 the qualitative methods of literature analysis, website analysis, email interviews and correspondence were used for investigating the bibliography. Results of research question one showed the SWAM bibliography’s beginnings and its basis in Swedish cultural heritage. Results of research question two showed the bibliography’s relationship to the Royal Library’s duties and instructions. Results of research question three showed the organization of knowledge in the bibliography’s scope, its digital structure and its accessibility. Results of research question four compared the bibliography to similar Nordic bibliographies. Results of research question five covered the Swedish and North American institutions collaborating on the project to keep the bibliography going and addressed the project member institution representatives’ ideas for the bibliography’s future. In addition to the bibliography material’s significance for Swedish cultural heritage, the conclusions revolved around the need for a combination of open communication channels among the member institutions, a sound financial base of operations and strong leadership and around the Royal Library’s ultimate head responsibility for the SWAM bibliography’s continuation.

Growing research into the cultural validity of psychotherapeutic models reflects the current interest in the impact of culture on mental healthcare. In the UK, Low and High Intensity modalities of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) are offered as cost-effective interventions for anxiety and depression in primary care. Research with Latino migrants in the US highlights the broad suitability of CBT interventions to this culture. However, its findings may not be generalisable to the Latino migrant population in the UK, due to different socio-political circumstances. This study explores the effectiveness and meaning of a Low Intensity CBT group intervention for Latino migrants in London using a mixed-methods approach. Participants attended a four-week workshop on anxiety and worry management facilitated in Spanish. Eight participants‘ pre and post-intervention scores in various outcome measures (CORE-OM, PHQ-9 and GAD-7) were compared using a repeated measures design. Additionally, seven participants gave their views on the intervention in two focus groups, information which was analysed to ascertain the themes underlying the discussions. Scores showed a trend towards a reduction in anxiety levels, failing to reach statistical significance. However, participants‘ positive evaluation of the intervention seemed in disagreement with these modest results. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Four themes were identified as underlying their discussions: useful CBT-specific elements, useful generic elements, intervention as basic/scope for improvement and Latino community needs. Participants acknowledged the place for Low Intensity CBT interventions, although thought further input was necessary. Therefore, they called for support at a community-level aimed at empowering the Latino community in the UK to tackle socio-political problems affecting them. These results are put in the context of previous research. Potential clinical implications as well as further research necessary on this topic are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to propose a means of reconciling the competing ideas of library and information science's identity, thereby strengthening professional autonomy. I make the case that developing a system of virtue ethics for librarianship would be an effective way to promote that reconciliation. The first step in developing virtue ethics is uncovering librarianship's function. Standard approaches to virtue ethics rely on classical Greek ideas about the nature of being to determine function. Since classical ideas of being may no longer be persuasive, I introduce another approach to uncover librarianship's function that still meets all of the criteria needed to establish a foundation for a system of virtue ethics. This approach is hermeneutical phenomenology, the philosophical discipline of interpreting the meaning given to historical events. Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic circle technique and Paul Ricoeur's theory of narrative intelligence are used to engage in a dialogue with three crises in the history of American librarianship. These pivotal events are the fiction question, librarian nationalism during World War I, and the dispute between supporters of the "Library Bill of Rights" and social responsibility. From these crises, three recurring themes become apparent: the tendency to reconcile idealism and pragmatism, the intent to do good for individuals and society, and the role of professional insecurity in precipitating the conflicts. Through emplotment of these themes, an identity narrative for librarianship emerges. My finding is that librarianship's function is the promotion of stability-happiness. This is the dual-process of supporting dominant socio-cultural institutions as a means of protecting librarianship's ability to offer the knowledge, cultural records, and avenues for information literacy that can improve lives and facilitate individuals' pursuit of happiness. In the conclusion, the ethical implications of having stability-happiness as the profession's function are considered. It includes a discussion of how librarianship's narrative identity could be applied to develop an ethical character for the profession and how such a character, combined with knowledge of function, might address persistent problems of race and gender disparity in library and information science.

The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and his Junto, served as the impetus for society libraries across colonial America. While inspiring ubiquitous learning, the Library Company also reinforced the English language in linguistically diverse Philadelphia. Furthermore, the Company emblematically displayed ownership of a new land and developed an idealized concept of what it meant to be a Pennsylvanian society through their cabinet of curiositiesâ all while cultivating the organizationâ s reputation within the colonial press. The Library Company, therefore, utilized language and material/visual culture to navigate individual and community identity in a decidedly unstructured atmosphereâ the period shortly before the complete onset of American nationalism. The process of â becoming American,â the development of an identity tied to a specific location that emphases class mobility and self creation while also differentiating itself from other societies, is enumerated through the study of these linguistic and cultural manipulations.

British Library MS Royal 15.E.VI, sometimes called the Shrewsbury Book, is a fifteenth-century anthology of French chansons de geste, romances, chronicles and military treatises on the theme of chivalry. Commissioned by Sir John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and captain of Rouen during the Lancastrian occupation, it was presented to the new queen of England, Marguerite d' Anjou, as a wedding gift in 1445. The second item in the anthology is a collection of three chansons de geste from the geste du roi, presented together as the Livrede Charlemaine. The subject of this thesis is an edition and study of the manuscript's redaction of the third of these chansons de geste, Fierabras. Despite the considerable scholarship that this codex has generated, very little work has been done on the texts themselves, and the Livre de Charlemaine texts -'-- copied from texts composed in the twelfth or thirteenth centuries - have never been edited. This thesis makes available for the first time an edition of this fifteenth-century version of Fierabras, - ) offering a detailed analysis of the text in relation to the wider tradition, and assesses its contribution to the manuscript. Part One considers the Livre de Charlemaine and Fierabras in context, following a 'broad-to-narrow' approach that begins with a description of the manuscript, moving through a discussion of the existing scholarship relating to the anthology's purpose and its creation and an examination -of its textual and visual representations of Charlemagne, leading finally to an in-depth analysis of the text of Fierabras itself and its relationship to the tradition. Part Two presents my critical edition to the first 1,138 lines of the text, including critical notes and editorial principles. A,basic edition of the remainder of the poem (without notes) is included as an appendix.

This thesis investigates how Londoners who migrated from Latin America - especially Colombia - represent their ethnic community discursively. It examines how the notion of latinidad is articulated in relation to local and global cultural narratives, and how the London Latino community is constructed strategically and hierarchically. It is guided by a social constructionist perspective and an interpretive approach. It draws on ethnographic research involving fifteen months of participant-observation at a Latin American complementary school, multiple encounters with three families, and twenty-five semi-structured interviews with adolescents and parents. This study argues that there are pressures and incentives for the London Latino community to essentialise strategically, and to maximise the appeal of community heritage to non-group members, so as to gain recognition, resources, and popularity. Tensions arise when families in and outside the community seek to acquire linguistic heritage - Spanish - for pragmatic reasons, and when they do not see speaking Spanish as necessary for authenticating ethnic membership. This study also finds that Latinas are associated with attractiveness, beautification, and seduction. Practices linked to appearance and dancing are seen as respectable or as excessive, and are coded in terms of aspiration, thus reflecting processes of stratification. Overall, this thesis finds that latinidad is mediated through linguistic, embodied, and gendered practices. These are evaluated according to the forms of social and cultural capital they are perceived as facilitating. The transnational dimension of trajectories and ideologies is an important factor in shaping discourses of latinidad, especially in accounting for the contingent exchange value of these semiotic practices. This study problematises the idea of ’Latin American community’ and operationalizes the concept of latinidad in the London context. It contributes to understanding how language and gender ideologies are lived and are open to negotiation among migrants and their descendents in a global city.

Presidential libraries are not really about presidents. Rather, presidential libraries define publics through the transformation of American history into images and ideas. The presidential library is a uniquely American institution where national history plays out in a mitigated exchange between the representation of memory and the record of political action. On the one hand, the presidential library is a peculiar type of museum and a place of commemoration whose purpose is to perpetuate an often-mythic memory of a singular figure-offering simultaneously the image of an idealized leader and a model for citizenship. On the other hand, its history describes a tenuous accountability between the potentially critical archive and an elusive public. The presidential libraries project a prophecy of historical exceptionalism into the future through the deployment of objects, images, and documents. They reveal how history is used to define American identity, how institutions of stewardship control access and present meaning, and how the contested ownership of history's objects over time transforms ideas of democratic judgment. Therefore, this dissertation examines how the place of the museum and the archive as repositories of national identity, the role of records preservation as a necessary facet of public judgment, and the contentious representations of prophetic heroism in American memory are brought together in the presidential library.
