We define BACI(Boxed Ambients with Communication Interfaces), an ambient calculus with a flexible communication policy. Traditionally, typed ambient calculi have a fixed communication policy determining the kind of information that can be exchanged with a parent ambient, even though mobility changes the parent. BACI lifts that restriction, allowing different communication policies with different parents during computation. Furthermore, BACI separates communication and mobility by making the channels of communication between ambients explicit. In contrast with other typed ambient calculi where communication policies are global, each ambient in BACI is equipped with a description of the communication policies ruling its information exchange with parent and child ambients. The communication policies of ambients increase when they move: more precisely, when an ambient enters another ambient, the entering ambient and the host ambient can exchange their communication ports and agree on the kind of information to be exchanged. This information is recorded locally in both ambients. We show the type-soundness of BACI, proving that it satisfies the subject reduction property, and we study its behavioural semantics by means of a labelled transition system.

As a response to the challenges that visual communication, popularly used in environmental communications, poses for more embodied engagements with climate change, this article focuses upon the neglected role of sound within environmental and climate communication scholarship. Focusing upon the decline of bees as a meaningful topic for the exploration of climate change, this article draws on research conducted with participants of a soundscape workshop to investigate the potential benefits and limitations of using sound-based activities to communicate about a specific climate change topic. This article demonstrates that modes of communicating climate change that encourage people to participate in imaginative, creative and future-based thinking can provide an effective way to engage audiences with the topic of climate change, thus encouraging greater individual and collective action.

Ambient backscatter employs existing radio frequency (RF) signals in the environment to support sustainable and independent communications, thereby providing a new set of applications that promote the Internet of Things (IoT). However, nondirectional forms of communication are prone to information leakage. In order to ensure the security of the IoT communication system, in this paper, we propose a machine learning based antenna design scheme, which achieves directional communication from the relay tag to the receiving reader by combining patch antenna with log-periodic dual-dipole antenna (LPDA). A multiobjective genetic algorithm optimizes the antenna side lobe, gain, standing wave ratio, and return loss, with a goal of limiting the number of large side lobes and reduce the side lobe level (SLL). The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed antenna design is well suited for practical applications in physical layer security communication, where signal-to-noise ratio of the wiretap channel is reduced, communication quality of the main channel is ensured, and information leakage is prevented.

Social movement in Ciliwung river area is an informal group activity specifically focuses on environmental issues about Ciliwung river, Jakarta, by implementing or rejecting and campaigning the movement. Visual communication design of social movement is very important because good visual communication design will acquire proper visual communication and specific message to support the success of social movement. Exploration of visual communication for environmental social movement campaign to the point of finding the right communication media will train the sense of environmental problems, enrich knowledge and insight, strengthen the theory and expert opinion, as well as a reference in visual communication design. Appropriate message of visual communication will make it easier to apply the message on the media. The number of visual communications media requires careful thought to decide the use of media in social movement. Ambient mascot creation and election of new media as the media are important in the selection of environmental social movement media. Ethnography was used as method in the study and design then through library research. Field work for approximately one and a half years in the Ciliwung river environmental activist and community Betawi culture become a fundamental tool for understanding the issues arise in the environment. Research is based on participant observation that strengthens the results which can be applied in the design of visual communication. Mascot is an important finding in this design. Figure which can be a spokesperson or spokespersons for social movement in the Ciliwung river is the central figure applied in any visual message in the visual communication design. Mascot also strengthens ambient media as new media in social movement of visual communication. This visual communication design contributes to Visual Communication Design in its patterns of thinking design phase from starting stages of concept, idea, and reference data exploration, ethnography to visualization stage.

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) is considered as a promising future emerging technology. Several works on AmBC have been proposed thanks to its convenience and low cost property. This paper focuses on finding the optimal energy detector at the receiver side and estimating the corresponding bit error rate for the communication system utilizing the AmBC. Through theoretical and numerical analyses, we present two important results. First, we improve the existing energy detector by calculating the optimal averaging power orders. Second, we take advantage of the early work on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), where the repeating structure of ambient OFDM signals is exploited to cancel out the direct-link interference by using a cyclic prefix, then provide a test statistic in which optimal detection threshold and optimal power order are derived accordingly. The study reveals the inherent limitation of AmBC energy detectors and provides a guidance for achieving optimal power order for a given significance level.

Mobile health (m-Health) scenarios and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies form an important direction for enhancing medical systems for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). Yet current development meets with two challenges: 1) use of patient's health data with strong security guarantees in mobile network and resource-constrained assumptions and in emergency situations, 2) inclusion of personal data to the entire system for “smart” service construction and delivery. This paper presents a smart space based architectural model that adopts emerging IoT technologies to enable security of personal mobile data and their intelligent utilization in health services. To support the service intelligence, the authors employ the smart spaces approach with its prominent technologies adopted from IoT and Semantic Web. The intelligence and security solutions are considered symbiotic to present better user-experience, security level, and utility of a system.

SummaryIntroduction: This article is part of the Focus Theme of Methods of Information in Medicine on “Pervasive Intelligent Technologies for Health”.Background: Effective nonverbal communication between patients and clinicians fosters both the delivery of empathic patient-centered care and positive patient outcomes. Although nonverbal skill training is a recognized need, few efforts to enhance patient-clinician communication provide visual feedback on nonverbal aspects of the clinical encounter. Objectives: We describe a novel approach that uses social signal processing technology (SSP) to capture nonverbal cues in real time and to display ambient visual feedback on control and affiliation – two primary, yet distinct dimensions of interpersonal nonverbal communication. To examine the design and clinician acceptance of ambient visual feedback on nonverbal communication, we 1) formulated a model of relational communication to ground SSP and 2) conducted a formative user study using mixed methods to explore the design of visual feedback. Methods: Based on a model of relational communication, we reviewed interpersonal communication research to map nonverbal cues to signals of affiliation and control evidenced in patient-clinician interaction. Corresponding with our formulation of this theoretical framework, we designed ambient real-time visualizations that reflect variations of affiliation and control. To explore clinicians’ acceptance of this visual feedback, we conducted a lab study using the Wizard-of-Oz technique to simulate system use with 16 healthcare professionals. We followed up with seven of those participants through interviews to iterate on the design with a revised visualization that addressed emergent design considerations. Results: Ambient visual feedback on non-verbal communication provides a theoretically grounded and acceptable way to provide clinicians with awareness of their nonverbal communication style. We provide implications for the design of such visual feedback that encourages empathic patient-centered communication and include considerations of metaphor, color, size, position, and timing of feedback. Conclusions: Ambient visual feedback from SSP holds promise as an acceptable means for facilitating empathic patient-centered nonverbal communication.

Ambient noise interferes with the propagation of acoustic signals through the environment from sender to receiver. Over the past few centuries, urbanization and the development of busy transport networks have led to dramatic increases in the levels of ambient noise with which animal acoustic communications must compete. Here we show that urban European robins Erithacus rubecula , highly territorial birds reliant on vocal communication, reduce acoustic interference by singing during the night in areas that are noisy during the day. The effect of ambient light pollution, to which nocturnal singing in urban birds is frequently attributed, is much weaker than that of daytime noise.

Haptic media studies emphasize the centrality of touch in the experience of digital media. This article considers how the haptic effect created by relationship between touch, gesture and spatial practice in Pokémon GO cements new possibilities for ambient play and co-presence. The app effectively draws on the genealogies of Nintendo’s handheld Pokémon games, but through the shift to smartphone devices the app creates new forms of ambient play, co-presence and communication that are realized through the publicness of the touch, gesture and comportment which make up the haptic effect of the app. By making the smartphones camera an integral part the game, Pokémon GO suggests the wider relevance of the communicability of feeling and gesture by extending ambient play and co-presence into social media, allowing players to (re)-experience the feeling and touch of Pokémon GO through affective resonance. This suggests that the tactility and touch of the haptic affect are embedded in a matrix of embodied experiences that are revealed through how photography and social media become sites for extending and ambient play.

Integrating ambient backscatter communications into RF-powered cognitive radio networks has been shown to be a promising method for achieving energy and spectrum efficient communications, which is very attractive for low-power or no-power communications. In such scenarios, a secondary user (SU) can operate in either transmission mode or backscatter mode. Specifically, an SU can directly transmit data if sufficient energy has been harvested (i.e., transmission mode). Or an SU can backscatter ambient signals to transmit data (i.e., backscatter mode). In this paper, we investigate the performance of such systems. Specifically, channel inversion power control and an energy store-and-reuse mechanism for secondary users are adopted for efficient use of harvested energy. We apply stochastic geometry to analyze coverage probability and achievable rates for both primary and secondary users considering both communication modes. Analytical tractable expressions are obtained. Extensive simulations are performed and the numerical results show the validity of our analysis. Furthermore, the results indicate that the performance of secondary systems can be improved with the integration of both communication modes with only limited impact on the performance of primary systems.

We firstly propose a hybrid-Radio-and-Visible-Light-Communication (HR-VLC) system in Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) employing Spread-Spectrum (SS) for better ranging and larger capacity. IVC, a key in Intelligent Transport System (ITS), is intended to improve the better safety and more convenient user experience. In the IVC, Radio communications system may not guarantee the precise ranging and large capacity. Thanks to the VLC with a good directionality and ubiquitous LEDs, a HR-VLC will support a reliable and better ranging system for IVC. Furthermore, the utilization of SS helps reduce the interference of ambient light proportionally to the processing gain. In the HR-VLC in IVC system, PPM is used as a modulation scheme due to high average power efficiency. It is verified that the proposed system achieves better BER performance and more precise ranging.

Synergy effects by common agreements for essential application components and standards are not achieved. Objectives: It is necessary to define a communication architecture which is based on common definitions of communication scenarios, application components and communication standards. Methods: The development of a communication architecture requires different steps. To gain a reference model for the problem area different AAL and telemedicine projects were compared and relevant data elements were generalized. The derived reference model defines standardized communication links. Results: As a result the authors present an approach towards a reference architecture for AAL-communication. The focus of the architecture lays on the communication layer. The necessary application components are identified and a communication based on standards and their extensions is highlighted. Conclusion: The exchange of patient in -dividual events supported by an event classification model, raw and aggregated data from the personal home area over a tele-medicine center to health care providers is possible.

Ambient media is a new form of media, which deals with media objects that mediate information throughout the natural environment of people. In ambient media environments, the media becomes part of daily life activities and environments – similar to location based services, where the physical world has a virtual digital overlay providing digital services for the consumer on a specific location. As any new media environment, also ambient media environments enable a new form and way of communication and impact on human culture. This article should provide a first starting point for discussing the wide topic of ambient media, and introduce aspects that relate to the development of an ambient media culture. The article shows different notions and discussions from a media cultural perspective, that impacts on ambient media environments. It compiles the results of the discussions that took place during the 2nd meeting of the Nordic network “The Culture of Ubiquitous Information” in Helsinki on the 19th January 2011. It shall lead to an initial discussion of this aspect and provide new ways of thinking how ubiquitous computation will impact human culture and which impact theories of Martin Heidegger or Katherine Hayles have in this context.

We examined the effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on net phosphorus (P) flux into phytoplankton communities in two boreal lakes at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), Canada. We manipulated P available to and irradiance received by phytoplankton during four different three-day incubations of dilution bioassays. Net P flux was estimated by measuring the accumulation of particulate P (that retained on glass fiber filters) over the incubation period. No effects of UVR on net P flux were found at ambient P levels in any of the experiments. At the highest levels of P addition, less particulate phosphorus (PP) accumulated in both the minus-UVB (~15–40%; photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) + UVA) and full-sunlight (~25–45%; PAR + UVA + UVB) exposed phytoplankton compared with those that received PAR only. Neither chlorophyll- nor carbon-specific net P flux was affected by UVR exposure at ambient P levels. However, at the highest levels of P enrichment, chlorophyll-specific net P flux increased in response to UVR in both lakes, whereas carbon-specific net P flux declined in one of the lakes and was unaffected by UV exposure in the second lake. Our results indicate that UVR can affect total PP accumulation in enriched systems, but not at ambient P levels, and that UVR has a weak and variable effect on biomass-specific P uptake in phytoplankton under enriched conditions.
