This is a house about decisions that were not made, not because I am indecisive, which I am, but because many of those choices that architects consider to be critical in design are to me either unnecessary or impossible: the choice between the detail of traditional architecture and the non-detail of minimalism, between a frame building and a wall building, between a free plan and a cellular plan, between a tight fit and a loose fit with function. These were all decisions in which I chose not one alternative but both. I did not believe the conventional wisdom that to be modern was to be minimal, scaleless, generalized and reductive or that to be representational, to make references to history, or to be responsive to scale was to be traditional.

Marcello Vitali-Rosati, in the essay “The Writer is the Architect” complimented by other works, provides a two-part thesis. The first argues that space is a chiasmic structure (as inside-outside); and the second argues that this structure reveals the productive role of the subject in constructing digital space (as architect). The essay here seeks to elucidate this logic and to expose it to a Lacanian critique: that it is a hysterical discourse unable in principle to emancipate digital spaces because it entails a purely immanent subject—in short, a subject which is solely product, not producer, of digital space

AbstractMicrofinance is globally trusted for corroborating the upliftment of the rural vulnerable poor sections. It is looked upon as a means of credit-based poverty alleviation through financial inclusion. India also witnesses the same. In India, the self-help group bank linkage programme (SHG–BLP) is architected by NABARD in 1992 as a pilot project. The programme was mainstreamed in 1996 to link unorganised with the formal financial sector. In Assam, microfinance services are made available through SHG–BLP registered under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission. Central Assam is the epicentre of operative SHG–BLP. This backdrop motivates us to explore the contribution of SHG–BLP in financial and social inclusion of the marginalised rural people of central Assam. Two self-developed indices, viz., financial inclusion index and social exclusion index are constructed by applying Multiple Correspondence Analysis. The impact analysis is facilitated by the Propensity Score Matching method. The study concludes that the SHG–BLP is successful in ensuring financial inclusion and simultaneously also assists in reducing social exclusion among the stakeholders.

Although immersive virtual reality (VR) has been shown to facilitate collaborative understanding of a design, many users remain resistant to its use. Moreover, there is currently a lack of real-world studies investigating why certain users (e.g., architects) are resistant to use VR during design reviews. The aim of this study is to understand the resistance that influence client representatives’ and architects’ interaction with a VR-system that supports both fully- and non-immersive experiences of the virtual environment. Data were gathered from three VR-workshops, which were part of 3 design review sessions of a new elementary school. Additional data were gathered from four semi-structured interviews with both the architects and client representatives participating in all workshop sessions, the interior architect involved in the project as well as an additional six semi-structured interviews. These additional six interviews involved exterior architects from different firms, who had previously used VR for both informative and design review purposes. The findings suggest that client representatives and the architects had initially been resistant to use VR during the design reviews, but their attitudes changed progressively during the three workshops, in particular that of the architects. The findings also indicate that interactive features in VR (e.g., object manipulation, multi-user) help end users negotiate design requests more efficiently and make informed decision-making. This paper highlights how immersive VR could improve the design review process

AbstractSketch is a way for architects to communicate with others. Architects record their own ideas through rapid drawing. However, sketches are abstract, vague, and even ambiguous. To this end, architects need to spend a lot of time, through modeling and other means, to present the architectural plan that can be understood by people. However, this method is time-consuming and laborious. Due to the development of deep learning technology, especially convolutional neural networks (CNN) and generative adversarial networks (GAN), they have shown great advantages in the field of image recognition and generation. With the help of these technologies, ambiguous architectural sketches can be directly transformed into architectural scheme drawings, and architects’ creative intentions can be continuously improved and developed, It will be very convenient and efficient. Therefore, based on the image-to-image translation, this paper realizes the mapping from architectural sketches to architectural scheme drawings with the help of CycleGAN. Through the analysis of the architectural generation design results of Frank Gehry's and Alberto Campo Baeza's architectural sketches, firstly, the feasibility of this method is verified. Secondly, it is found that this method can well complete the identification of sketch boundaries. In the generated scheme drawings, it can not only reflect the volume and lighting changes of the building, but also reflect the architect's creative intention and style to a large extent, The side reflects the cognitive ability of this method to architectural design.

His lecture on “architectural privacy” was the most popular in the University of Arkansas Honors course on privacy. We interviewed him in June of 2023 to capture his design philosophy in relation to privacy. The conversation focused on four architectural privacy themes: (1) the relationship between privacy and comfort, and the roles of (2) primary, secondary, and tertiary spaces, (2) light, and (3) sounds in creating private moments in public spaces. A fifth theme encapsulates the essence of his design philosophy: “ennobling the prosaic.”

Training for all teachers in higher education institutions was consensual, as was education science, including child psychology, as a reference discipline. The place of national or international orientation in teacher education caused the members of the conference to clash. The conferences steadily advocated for better status and salaries for the teachers, introducing a comparison with other professions with high-level qualifications.

AbstractIn the past few years, more architects and engineers start thinking about the application of machine learning algorithms in the architectural design field such as building facades generation or floor plans generation, etc. However, due to the relatively slow development of 3D machine learning algorithms, 3D architecture form exploration through machine learning is still a difficult issue for architects. As a result, most of these applications are confined to the level of 2D. Based on the state-of-the-art 2D image generation algorithm, also the method of spatial sequence rules, this article proposes a brand-new strategy of encoding, decoding, and form generation between 2D drawings and 3D models, which we name 2D-3D Form Encoding WorkFlow. This method could provide some innovative design possibilities that generate the latent 3D forms between several different architectural styles. Benefited from the 2D network advantages and the image amplification network nested outside the benchmark network, we have significantly expanded the resolution of training results when compared with the existing form-finding algorithm and related achievements in recent years.

Abstract Alfred Bult Mullett is the best known of the fifteen men who served as supervising architect of the Treasury Department. Part of his reputation can be ascribed to the survival and growing appreciation of his sprawling State, War, and Navy Building located on the block just west of the White House. He also personified the supervising architect s near total control over public building design in an era when the architectural profession was becoming defined to the public. Thus, his was a monopoly that drew increasing levels of opposition from the community of private architects, now banded together into the American Institute of Architects (A1A). He was like an entrepreneur―although in this case a bureaucratic operator―in that he fought his enemies bitterly to hold onto his power. Long after Mullett left the Supervising Architect’s Office, his name continued to be cited by private architects as representing all that was wrong with federal government architecture.

The present research is the result of an extension project linked to the undergraduate course in architecture and urbanism of the University Nilton Lins and has as its main objective the analysis of four residential works of the architect Severiano Porto in the city of Manaus/AM. The concept analysis is characterized by a reflective and critical reading of the architecture, being essential for the knowledge of the processes and strategies of the architect's residential projects. Sandoval Porto was one of the pioneer Brazilian architects to act in the Amazon region, where he sought a regional identity for modern architecture, being aware that the regional factors should be studied for proper application in the project. In this research, the residences will be analyzed: "Casa do Cafundó", "Casa Porto", "Casa Robert Schuster", and the "Casa Alexandre ale dos Santos"; Through a methodological roadmap that uses the redesign and 3d modeling for the understanding of the projects in the framework concept, constructive, functional and plastic. The research is based both on the relevant concept and conceptual of the works of the architect, as for the fact that these productions are still little known and documented. Thus, the present research aims also to contribute to a better understanding of the works of the architect Severiano Porto and the studies sore the architecture Amazonense.

During the Progressive Era, they transformed the Beaux-Arts architectural experience into branded formal standards and patterns that conveyed worldwide a strong, exceptionalist message of U.S. leadership in the Western Hemisphere. Such Beaux-Arts Federal architecture fell into oblivion after modern architecture, and the International Style emerged. Also, following a major scandal involving bribery and extortion by private architects, the 1913 revoking of the Tarsney Act eventually forced the closing of the Office of the Supervising Architect.

The architecture/town planning of the Dutch modernist Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) is a significant example of the crossover between municipal planning and architecture. Dudok’s buildings, particularly those at Hilversum, are widely acknowledged and recognisable as design sources drawn upon by Australian modernists in the period 1925 to 1955. He planned Hilversum as a garden city in 1918 and it was visited by many Australian architects during this study period. Dudok initially trained as an engineer. His career, combining architecture and town planning, presented the ideal modernist project in practice. Hilversum was one of the key locations in Europe after World War I, where modern town planning and architecture worked in unity. Architecture, although often collaborative within a practice, could also be individualistic and Dudok’s practice in many ways exemplified this approach. Town planning required the coordination of professionals. At Hilversum, Dudok achieved this unity, with his well-planned municipal areas and modern buildings successfully integrated into them. This was within the context of contemporary Dutch town planning and housing laws, post World War I. This paper presents Dudok’s work, emphasising the crossover and integration of architecture and town planning. It examines the significance or not, of this crossover between these disciplines in the dissemination of his work by Australian architects and examines specifically whether Dudok’s town planning practices were part of the dissemination of his work. It concludes that for those Australian architects who experienced Hilversum first-hand, Dudok’s buildings were perceived as integrated into the town plan, particularly their context and the essentialness of the landscaping. Furthermore, Dudok had a commitment to the social wellbeing of the community through his planning with schools as focal points. Newcastle Technical College, New South Wales, is an exemplar of this in Australia.

Female architects of Socialist Yugoslavia, many with families and children concurrent with their career peaks, commonly co-opted an image of the avant-garde artist for their professional lives. The explicit normalcy and domesticity of their private spheres appeared to be largely and publicly suppressed in favor of a black-clad persona, whose work and communication veered away from the everyday and relatable, choosing to focus on the outwardly conceptual, and the abstract. Additionally, the overt separation of the collective government-run architectural practice, and a simultaneous individual (i.e., private architectural practice) for women architects triggered a similar type of code switching. In that case, the avant-garde iconography provided for a consumable media-savvy figure. For the architects of Atelje Lik and the architect Svetlana Kana Radević, operating in a country where architecture was the precise embodiment of societal ideals, code-switching counteracted the established patriarchal environment, but also positioned their private practices, better placed to realize their progressive social ideals through architecture.

Under the headers of ‘advocacy planning’, ‘collaboration’, ‘participatory design’, ‘co-production’, ‘commoning’ and ‘negotiated planning’, participation is, nowadays, at the centre of the debate on urban design. Architects and urban designers are developing new concepts, tools and roles to comply with these new participatory modii operandi. The participatory concern in the urban design process has not only a long history in practice but also in urban design education. Various experimental initiatives with participation emerged in the domain of architectural pedagogy in the late sixties, often starting from student initiatives. Representative cases are The Architects’ Resistance (TAR) - a group formed in 1968 by architecture students from Columbia GSAPP, MIT Department of Architecture, and Yale School of Architecture, - the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS), the Black Workshop, the City Planning Forum, and Associazione Studenti e Architetti (ASEA). Many of these groups emerged within the context of the struggles for civil rights and thus made a plea to have non-hegemonic or ‘other’ voices heard in the urban design process. These initiatives explored how new concepts, roles and tools for participation could become part of the education of the architect and urban designer. The paper investigates an ensemble of counter-events, counter- publications in the US and Italy during the sixties, shedding light on their impact on the institutional status of academia and on how activism can reinvent the relationship between architecture and democracy. Its objective is to reveal the tensions between enhancing equality in planning process and local bureaucracy in the case of advocacy planning strategies, on the one hand, and to reflect upon the necessity to reshape the urban planning models in order to respond to the call for a more democratic society, on the other.

While the architectural design process may be led by a figurehead architect, contemporary buildings are the result of vast teams of designers, engineers, and builders. They are furthermore influenced by social issues, local policy, and clients. Yet typical American architectural design pedagogy centers around design studios where students work individually on creative projects. This pedagogical style reinforces a fallacy of the genius architect, the heroic designer who designs and creates in a vacuum. This paper and presentation showcases a seminar designed specifically to subvert this paradigm and provide targeted collaboration skills and support to students as they work on inter- and intra-disciplinary teams on a creative project. Taught collaboratively between Northeastern University’s School of Architecture and New York University’s Tisch School of Dance, this course takes inspiration from historical collaborations between prominent experimental dancers and designers like Anna and Lawrence Halprin; Merce Cunningham, John Cage and a variety of designers; and others. During the first six weeks of the semester, architects and dancers prepare within their own disciplinary cohorts for collaboration. Architects learn from case studies in contemporary dance and set design; they learn hand drawing and sketching skills for quick ways of expressing their ideas; and finally they read, complete exercises from and discuss Collaborative Intelligence: Thinking with People Who Think Differently, by Dawna Markova and Angie McArthur. Dancers also read this book. Following this preparatory period, architecture students are paired based on skill areas, interests and working styles discovered through the workshop. Then, architect pairs and dancers exchange portfolios of work before meeting remotely for a “speed-dating” style zoom session after which they rank their preferred collaborators. Teams are thus formed and the long distance collaboration between architect pairs and dancers begins. Together, architect-dancer teams envision and prototype a public performance through remote collaboration. Students draw from the methods in Collaborative Intelligence to address conflicts. Through this process, architecture students experience at a small but real scale the architectural design and delivery process from conceptual development to project completion with a focus on building collaboration tactics.

Much of an architect´s training occurs by a process of elimination. We must unlearn many things to learn the new ones; in our particular Costa Rican educational context learning to produce correct architecture seems to start with the assumption that most of what we see in our cities is wrong. But when it comes to construction we move between two traditions: the academic one and the informal one. These traditions seem to dismiss each other, an architect would consider the products of informality ingenuous, a person operating within the informal tradition in need of the materialization of the preconceived idea of a house would normally consider an architecta luxury. According to the National Architectural College 23% of overall construction lacked permits in 2014, a percentage slightly higher than the previous year, this nevertheless renders only partial understanding the phenomenon. Which of the two traditions accounts for the majority of what is built in this country? What significant informal knowledge percolates to the present after a much longer presence than formal education and how is it transmitted? What role does representation play in the informal tradition ? are instructions drawn or narrated ?… How do architects unlearn what they do not understand in full? A house designed by the author in the rural North of Costa Rica functions as a catalyst for further investigation on how the upbringing of an architect collides with more traditional ways of building. In a village where, no other architect has practiced before the author discovers several categories of construction, from the temporary huts vendors use to sell fruits and milking parlors, to houses that have been built following traditional “recipes”. The house learns lessons of practicality from these structures and is informed by their aesthetics. It also employs the old“vara” (0.84 m) as the unit of measurement in an attempt to make itself communicable to local builders. In practice, due to the lack of skill for reading formal construction drawings, the instructions to build the house end up being narrated rather than read. This paper will study informal construction in Costa Rica which is symptomatic of Latin America in general particularly in rurality where it occurs the most. It will collect information from specific cases on how decisions where made and how they were transmitted, and will look for ways to hierarchize them in order to identify which are part of a basic set of instructions (or recipe, meaning there can be small creative variations of the ingredients) and which take place as more significant deviations from those instructions. It will also propose ways to convey the graphic implications of this information that is compatible with the inflections that occur in the orality of these particular context, and finally it will put forward a discussion on ways for an architect to learn from and operate within it, anticipating that our built environment takes shape as a trade-off between both traditions.

This year marks the 190th birthday of the famous Swiss architect of Italian origin A.I. Bernardazzi, who is also known for creating various historic buildings in Ukraine, Bessarabia and Poland. Archival documents were an evidence of the beginning of architectural career of Bernardazzi, when the Bessarabian Road and Construction Commission appointed him as the technician for urban planning of Akkerman and Bendery in 1853 and also for building some bridges and causeways in those districts. He took part in the organization of the third market in the Forest Square in Kishinev in September of 1855. This was the first mission of his creativity in Kishinev. Alexander Bernardazzi executed his duty as municipal architect from 1856 to 1878 having taken the place of another architect Luca Zaushkevich. All his subsequent monumental buildings became the best examples of European architecture by their style, shape, and quality. . In Bessarabia, he participated in the design and construction of many buildings such as the temporal theatre, the Lutheran school, the railway station, the Greek Church, the Manuk-Bei’s palace, etc. As for Kishinev, the architect Bernardazzi performed the beautification of paving many streets, the construction of urban water supply and the cast-iron railing in the city park. Also, he participated in many architects’ meetings where he submitted interesting reports referring to the theater, some windows, fire safety of buildings and so on. After his arrival to Odessa in 1878, Alexander Bernardazzi continued to participate in designing social and civil buildings in Bessarabia. For his enormous creative contribution to urban development, he was appreciated with the title of honorable citizen of Kishinev and appointed member of the Bessarabian department of the Imperial Russian Technical Society.

When designing a software architecture to fulfill quality-attribute requirements, architects normally explore and assess alternative solutions leading to different quality-attribute tradeoffs. In this context, we developed the SQuAT framework to support automated multi-objective optimization in large design spaces. SQuAT provides a modular, multi-agent architecture in which each agent represents and optimizes a particular quality attribute. However, this search strategy has problems identifying tradeoffs that satisfy all the parties (or architects’ concerns), particularly when searching for many candidate solutions and evaluating them becomes computationally costly. This is actually a general challenge for architecture optimization tools. To deal with it, SQuAT features an agent negotiation protocol that seeks consensus based on the utility of solutions as judged by each agent. In this paper, we present a parameterized heuristic that enhances the integration between search and negotiation in SQuAT, and also report on an empirical evaluation with two case studies. The results show initial evidence that using negotiation is more effective than doing a pure search to identify solutions having a balanced utility across agents, and thus, offer alternative quality-attribute tradeoffs to the architect.

Successive house building booms from the late 19th century until the Second World War shaped London’s built environment decisively. In terms of the sheer size of area covered, the dispersed, suburban London of terraced, semi- and detached houses that we know today was to a large extent created then, and much of it was built speculatively - by private firms for an assumed demand. Despite this legacy, the questions of who those involved in the design were and how they did it is an under-researched topic surrounded by assumptions that are often difficult to substantiate. Speculative housing of the period has long been regarded as an example of vernacular architecture, made by craftsmen using standard templates, so-called pattern books, without architect’s or otherwise professional involvement. The idea – in its extreme, ‘ultra’ form - is that designers were hardly necessary, as builders could simply copy house designs found in popular books and build from these. This idea of house building without architects or designers is also reflected in some of the literature but has been questioned more recently in academic research. This paper will discuss the key occupations involved in the design and planning of speculative housing 1880s – 1939 through a survey of Building Applications for Richmond. These can only be understood in the context of its working world where boundaries between building and design roles were often less specialized than today. The evidence suggests that housing design was not as standardised as it appears, by simply reusing templates, but that much of it was in fact designed, usually for a number of dwellings at a time - by builders, architects and also by other professionals. These were the other ‘architects’ who made the London we know today.

"Formally trained architects in India participate in building habitation for less than 10 per cent of the population. Most architecture created through the involvement of architects produces segregation and discrimination towards certain classes, castes and genders. This study is concerned with the role of formal architectural education in addressing the habitation question and issues of spatial justice. Towards this, a review of the educational ecosystem for architecture has been undertaken. This ecosystem includes institutions, universities, regulatory bodies, journals, events, awards and offices. The study also briefly looks at cases of habitation making for the remaining 90 per cent who do not get served by trained architects. From our review, it is apparent that this ecosystem is structurally, institutionally and pedagogically insufficient to produce a relevant spatial culture, spatial justice or cultural sustainability. While it is structurally located within a political economy where education is a money-making enterprise, it is institutionally geared to reduce academia to educational organisations and pedagogically oriented to prepare students for a building industry of a certain kind. Yet, despite the odds, architectural institutions have been innovating and striving to create relevance. Their efforts will remain key for the overhaul of the ecosystem and they will have to steer the process of change."

On the way to a reliable and large-scale application of internal insulation, clear and simple guidelines for building practitioners are needed, across all phases of refurbishment planning. Closing this gap was one objective of the “IN2EuroBuild”-project, completed in 2022. As a support in the planning process and for decision-making within the framework of the project, two comprehensive guides for the planning of internal insulation measures were developed. They guide users from the as-is analysis of the building (part one) to the renovation planning of the façade, the selection of suitable insulation systems and the verification and consideration of constructional details (part two). It describes the aspects to be considered during the entire process of planning and implementing an interior insulation measure. Both parts of the guide are aimed at people who have little or no experience in the field of energy efficient refurbishment and interior insulation, but who want to be informed and at least have a say. This group of people can include, for example, building owners, investors or public authority employees, but also architects or engineers who have rarely dealt with interior insulation and therefore do not know the various planning bases and dependencies in detail. The reader should be enabled to assess an issue and select a suitable interior insulation system in the numerous, unproblematic cases in which experts do not need to be consulted.

A solar-powered automated transportation network (ATN) connecting the North and South campuses of San José State University with three passenger stations was designed, visualized, and analyzed in terms of its energy usage, carbon offset, and cost. The study’s methodology included the use of tools and software such as ArcGIS, SketchUp, Infraworks, Sketchup, Rhinoceros, and Autodesk 3DS Max. ATN vehicle energy usage was estimated using data from the university’s Park & Ride shuttle bus operation and by modeling with SUMOPy, the advanced simulation suite for the micro-traffic simulator SUMO. The energy study showed that an extensive solar photovoltaic (PV) canopy over the guideway and stations is sufficient for the network to run 24/7 in better-than-zero net-metered conditions—even if ridership were to increase 15% above that predicted from SJSU Park & Ride shuttle data. The resulting energy system has a PV-rated output of 6.2 MW, a battery system capacity of 9.8 MWh, and an estimated cost of $11.4 million USD. The solar ATN also produces 98% lower CO2 and PM2.5 emissions compared to the Park & Ride shuttle bus. A team of experts including urban planners, architects, and engineers designed and visualized the conceptual prototype, including a comprehensive video explaining the need for solar ATN and what a typical rider would experience while utilizing the system. This research demonstrates both benefits and challenges for solar-powered ATN, as well as its functionality within the urban built environment to serve diverse San José neighborhoods.
