O presente artigo é uma tradução do texto de Gordon Allport chamado “Imagination in Psychology: Some Steps of Execution” publicado em 1964 no livro “Imagination and the University”.

Leak and Fish (1999) provided initial evidence for the validity of the Religious Maturity Scale – Version 2 (RM-2). The scale was developed to assess six areas of religious maturity specified by Allport (1950). Consequently, information concerning the number and nature of factors underlying responses to the scale is important. The analysis revealed four factors corresponding to the dynamic, differentiated, comprehensive, and heuristic aspects of religious maturity. The results have implications for the future development of specific subscales as well as for the value of Allport's theory of religious maturity.

In the history of any scientific discipline, certain people stand out because they effectively defined the discipline, separated it from neighbouring specialities, and gave it a local habitation and a name. Three names stand out in the history (brief though it may be) of the scientific study of personality. The first is A. Heymans, a Dutch philosopher who almost single-handedly introduced the various theoretical, methodological and psychometric methods that characterise modern personality study (Eysenck, 1992). In the early years of this century, he put forward theories of specific personality dimensions, carried out rating studies on large numbers of subjects, correlated traits and devised a primitive method of factor analysis, derived factors that have stood the test of time (extraversion and neuroticism, to give them their modern names), and even went so far as to carry out psychological and physiological experiments to test deductions from these theories. As a reward for all this pioneering effort he is completely neglected in the modern literature; Hall et al (1985), in their Introduction to Theories of Personality gave much room to nonentities like Medard Boss, but make no mention of Heymans. He committed the ultimate crime of not being born in America, and must therefore be considered a non-person. Fortunately his theories and methodologies five on, largely in the London School.

One of the central tenets of Karl Weick’s work and one of his original contributions to organization theory is his insistence that organizational scholars should study structures of events rather than people, objects, or pseudo-objects, important as they all are. Through the operation of sensemaking, events may be portrayed as meaningful actions or random occurrences, but it is the connections among them that are central to organizing. This paper connects Karl Weick’s work to that of Floyd H. Allport and Erving Goffman, two among several writers who inspired Weick. These three authors shared an interest in what Allport called structuring, Goffman called ordering, and Weick called organizing of the events and experiences of everyday life. This genealogical presentation of their work attempts to situate their thoughts within contemporary debates in social sciences, including those determined by the spirit of the times.

Nessa revisão investigamos a origem teórica da escala I/E no livro The individual and his religion, publicado por Allport.

Hsieh and Allport studied shifts of attention in semantic space, using a semantic monitoring task based on rapid, serial, visually presented sequences of words. They reported that following a shift of criterion, accuracy of semantic monitoring dropped abruptly to a low level, then gradually recovered to reach the preshift level over successive stimuli in the sequence. They further examined the nature of the recovery of accuracy following a shift of criterion. Despite the striking results they obtained, some problems of their design remained. Hence, the current research replicated Hsieh and Allport's experiments with some modifications and showed that a shift of semantic criterion in a rapidly presented sequence indeed appears to be stimulus-driven rather than an autonomous process.

This study considers the relationship between religious orientation and pressure in 494 first-year Psychology students at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Religious orientation is defined according to Allport's concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation and was measured using the Allport-Ross Religious Orientation Scale-Revised. Pressure is a concept used by Weiten to define the everyday life stress experienced by individuals and was measured in this study using Weiten's Pressure Inventory. The influence of religious affiliation on religious orientation and pressure was also explored. Results revealed few significant differences between intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation and the types of pressure experienced. Religious affiliation significantly affected religious orientation but had no influence on pressure. These results are discussed in relation to the literature on religion and mental health and well-being.

Allport’s (1954) intergroup contact hypothesis states that interactions with members of an out-group, particularly of a different racial and/or ethnic group, are effective in changing attitudes about diversity (Allport, 1954; Pettigrew, 1998). In this study, the intergroup contact hypothesis was applied to the design of a sport management course. The classroom component focused the role of sport in education, health, and leadership development, and the application was structured sport and physical activity programming with school-age children at several urban sites. Data were gathered from 91 college students over 3 years about course-related experiences and how the students’ backgrounds influenced their social identities and understanding of out-group members. Results showed that intergroup contact effectively assisted in developing understanding and cooperation and reducing negative attitudes between groups. The participants received diversity education, via intergroup contact, both inside and outside the classroom, which will potentially equip them to take proactive strategies when managing organizational diversity in the sport industry.

Abstract Allport (1954) hypothesized that intergroup contact would reduce prejudice that an in-group member would experience toward an out-group member. Allport held that positive effects of intergroup contact would occur when four conditions were met: (a) equal group status within the situation, (b) common goals, (c) intergroup cooperation, and (d) the support of authorities, law, or custom. Although contact with older adults is an important influence on attitudes toward older people, no psychometrically adequate measures of contact exist. Specifically, this study examined the factor structure of an instrument to measure contact with older adults. The convenience sample consisted of 188 women and 282 men (n = 470). Mean ages for men and women were 21.06 (SD = 2.28) and 20.88 (SD = 3.09), respectively (Mtotal = 20.99, SDtotal = 2.63). Participants were predominantly Caucasian (n=295, 62.6%), African American (n=67, 14.2%), Hispanic/Latino/a (n=63, 13.4%), and other minorities comprising the remaining 9.8%. Results of a confirmatory factor analysis showed the three factor model exhibited a reasonable fit to the data X2 (41, N = 471) = 281.81; p<.0001, CFI =.954; TLI =.938; RMSEA =. 000 (90% CI, 0.100-0.124) SRMS = .054. Results and further adjustments to the model will be discussed.

Abstract This study describes the nature, causes, and outcomes of steadfast, unquestioned “true” belief in later life (Hoffer, 1950). According to some theorists, such “true” belief develops from more childish, extrinsically-motivated, compartmentalized beliefs and behaviors to become more mature, intrinsically-motivated, comprehensive and integrated beliefs and behaviors (e.g., Allport, 1950). Research, however, is equivocal regarding the validity of this position. From “grounded-theory” analysis of a sample of 278 semi-structured interviews of older adults from six New England states and New York (aged 55-101 years-old.), we demonstrate the need for a more nuanced definition of a “true” belief as a form of religiousness without commitment to rigid orthodoxy. For example, a sizable segment of this sample changed religious denominations over the course of their lives without ever doubting the presence of a diety (i.e., a God, a Higher Power, etc.), but who dramatically changed the way they expressed this belief. This prompts a reconceptualization of “true” belief by Hoffer and a more nuanced understanding of religious development than implied by Allport, one that more adequately accounts for individual differences in life experiences, personality, religious upbringing, and religious cultural expectations. We discuss these findings in light of recent research by Wink and Dillon (2002, 2008).

The religious ideas of 83 individuals were examined when they were college freshmen, seniors, and then as alumni 20 yr. later, using scales and items from the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values and the Omnibus Personality Inventory. Their religious ideas were related to other aspects of their values and personalities, as well as their careers and current activities. Analyses suggest that there were sizable changes in religious ideas toward more liberal and free-thinking positions during the college years, with relatively few further changes thereafter.

Drawing on 6 decades of participant observation in personality and social psychology, this article provides comments on the qualities of the founding generation at mid-20th century (e.g., Allport, Lewin, Murphy, Murray, Newcomb, and Sherif). Their breadth, commitment to a humane science, and interest in its social applications have since been in short supply. The juncture of personality psychology and social psychology has become problematic. Reasons for this are explored. Holistic personology may presentlyfind a more congenial setting in life span developmental psychology than in social psychology.

Abstract According to Allport (1954) intergroup contact would reduce prejudice that in-group members would experience toward out-group members. Allport also theorized that positive intergroup contact would follow after four conditions were met: (a) equal group status within the situation, (b) common goals, (c) intergroup cooperation, and (d) the support of authorities, law, or custom. While contact with older adults is a principal influence on attitudes toward older people, there is a paucity of adequate contact measures. This study assessed the cross-validity of the factor structure of an instrument to measure contact with older adults. The convenience sample consisted of 470 participants (61% male) from an undergraduate student subject pool (M = 20.67, SDtotal = 3.37). Participants were predominantly Caucasian (n=176, 48.9%), African American (n=103, 28.6%), and Hispanic/Latino/a (n=51, 14.2%). Results of a confirmatory factor analysis showed the three-factor model exhibited a reasonable fit to the data □□ (41, n = 360) = 191.797; p<.0001, CFI =.971; TLI =.961; RMSEA = .101 (90% CI, 0.087-0.116) SRMS = .042. An additional model examining the relationships between a single indicator of contact frequency and the three-factor COA scale revealed similar fit statistics □□ (41, n = 360) = 191.797; p<.0001, CFI =.967; TLI =.955; RMSEA = .092 (90% CI, 0.079-0.105) SRMS = .044. The findings provide clear and consistent evidence across independent samples that the covariances among the items are best explained through a latent structure that consists of three meaningful factors (“General Contact”, “Positive Experience, and “Negative Experience”).

Making approximations to the genealogy of subjectivity, a term coined by Michel Foucault, who in turn approached conceptually what might be considered as an “archeology of psychology” and later outlined the concept of “psychological interiority”, "which converges well with the search for the individuation process. It should be noted that currently the psychological interiority may well result from the features theory made by R. Catell and G. Allport, or perhaps the psychological interiority can be integrated from the temperament approaches suggested by R. Cloninger and have a heritable basis and that allow the consolidation of identity and personality (Celikel, Kose et al. 2009).

We investigated the value system of psychology and nonpsychology majors using a revised version of the Allport, Vernon, and Lindzey Study of Values. This abridged version of the test was administered to a heterogeneous sample of 125 undergraduates enrolled in a wide variety of psychology courses as well as 96 additional students enrolled in psychology sophomore and junior level psychological service courses. When students were more closely sampled for classes and rank, nonpsychology majors reported being more political than psychology majors on this instrument. However, limitations of sampling may have curtailed more robust differences. The importance of research on values for the teaching of undergraduate psychology is discussed.

Allport (1935) contended that attitudes are real and substantial ingredients in human nature, arguing that without them, we cannot account for the constituency of a person’s behaviour, or for the stability of society as a whole. Thus, public attitude surveys provide us with a temperature reading of opinion across our society on key issues that affect our lives. Such surveys also play a potentially important role within the policy making process, both in helping to help shape and to evaluate policy priorities (Devine & Robinson, 2014). This short article highlights the role of ARK in measuring public attitudes in Northern Ireland for over 15 years.

Implicit personality theories could develop out of the rationales on which each individual bases a concept of man and constructs an implicit personality theory. 77 psychology students (19 men, 58 women) were given the task of appraising rationales in an empirical study designed to investigate the background of implicit personality theory. The basic assumptions of Hjelle and Ziegler in 1976 concerning personality theories were used as the rationales. The answers given on the basis of these rationales were uniform, which supports the supposition that they are universal. Holism, subjectivity, and proactivity were emphasized uniformly. The results are, in part, very similar to the theoretical views of Murray, Allport, Erikson, Freud, and Kelly.

The purpose of this article is to study the personality dominant values in Graphic Design students from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico. A scale developed by Allport, Vernon and Lindsey called: Study of values. A scale for the measuring of personality dominant interests was used. The sample was applied to 124 students, men and women, from the different semesters in the current term 2015 A. It was proven that the prevailing dominant values are the economical and the aesthetic. An outstanding finding is the fact that less importance is paid to values associated with the religious, the social and the political.
