Before the war there were private and "old field" public elementary schools, and also private, individual- and church-supported high-schools called academies, seminaries, or institutes. Some even used the word college. Geology and mineralogy were taught in some of the academies, depending upon the availability of teachers; most had the typical classical education of the day. There were four colleges: Franklin [the University of Georgia], Mercer [Baptist], Oglethorpe [Presbyterian], and Emory [Methodist]. All had geology in the curriculum, either as a distinct one-semester course [combining the present-day physical and historical geology] or as part of a course in natural history. None was a center of great scientific strength, although both Franklin and Oglethorpe had the services of Joseph LeConte for a short while. Brief biographies of John R. Cotting, James Jackson, Joseph Jones, William L. Jones, Joseph LeConte, Alexander Means, Josiah Meigs, George W. W. Stone, Joseph Willett, and James Woodward are included.

AbstractThe continuous substantial and flexible material support of the bankers Joseph and Alexander Mendelssohn were of essential importance for Alexander von Humboldt's outstanding scientific expeditions and his work as a publicist, coordinator and supporter of fellow scientist and scientific projects in Berlin for decades. New sources present this support of Humboldt by the Mendelssohns in all its depth and variety. At the same time, the enduring funding of one of Prussia's most important Bildungsbürger clearly illustrates that the business policy of the Mendelssohn bankers was based on a canon of values in which the acceptance of responsibility in different fields of society were of equal importance as pure economic success.

Abstract:Alexander Scott’s narrative of his captivity in the Sahara in the early nineteenth century presents a curious example of how information of foreign lands was received and legitimized in Britain. Through the input of individuals such as Joseph Banks and James Rennell, Scott’s tale was presented as an authoritative account of the inaccessible West African interior. This article pursues this process of authentication and demonstrates how elements of the editors” preconceived notion of the region colored the subsequent text and associated cartography.

Kaethler, Andrew T. J. „Eschatology and personhood : Alexander Schmemann and Joseph Ratzinger in dialogue“. Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6526.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This thesis explores the extent to which eschatology shapes temporal existence. The interlocutors are Alexander Schmemann and Joseph Ratzinger. The first part of the thesis examines (1) Schmemann's account of eschatology, (2) how this shapes temporality, and (3) what it means to be a person in time. Schmemann's account is based upon a dualistic conception of temporality in which ‘this world', the ‘old' aeon, finds its meaning and life in the ‘new' aeon. Thus, meaning is found anagogically and teleologically, and human persons are called not only to ascend and leave the ‘old' aeon but, as priests, to instil meaning into the world by offering it to God. It is argued that although Schmemann's anthropology is Christocentric and relational, it remains, like his view of temporality, teleologically unidirectional. The second part of the thesis addresses the same questions as are raised in part one but of Ratzinger's theological approach. For Ratzinger eschatology is absorbed into Christology, and thus it is understood relationally as is also the case with his account of history. The Logos as dia-Logos works within history ‘wooing' humankind into relationship with the trinitarian God. As a result of Ratzinger's relation vision, history is undivided––there is no ‘old' and ‘new' aeon––and history succeeding Christ continues to be Advent history. As historical creatures, human persons are relational beings who must be understood as both ‘with' and ‘for' the other. Temporality as relational ‘space' is central to his account and interpreted as grounded in the eternal being of the relational God. The thesis concludes that for Ratzinger God's triune relationality shapes eschatology and what it means to be a person in time. Whereas, for Schmemann, the converse is the case: eschatology informs his conception of relationality, temporality, and personhood. As a result of the primacy of eschatology in Schmemann's theology human temporal existence is ultimately denigrated.

The Vienna Tonkünstler-Verein (1885-1929) was established for the sole purpose of providing extensive support to the music and musicians of Vienna. The society became renowned in Vienna for its outstanding performances of chamber music and counted among its members many of the city’s foremost musicians and composers. Johannes Brahms had a significant influence on the society as its honorary president and assisted in establishing its composition competitions, aimed at promoting and reviving under-developed chamber genres. Of particular interest to clarinetists is the Verein’s competition of 1896, which aspired to promote chamber music literature for wind instruments. Brahms’s recently completed chamber works for clarinet were clearly influential in fin-de-siècle Vienna; for of the twelve works chosen as finalists in the competition, ten included the clarinet in the chamber combination. The purpose of this document is to provide an English-language history of the Vienna Tonkünstler-Verein and a thorough account of its1896 competition based on my study of the society’s annual reports. In addition, this document will provide the first published account of the anonymous submissions for the 1896 competition. It is my hope that this paper will serve as a springboard for future endeavors aimed at uncovering the identities of the anonymous finalists for this competition.

Annotation:
Alexander Campbell, a contemporary of Joseph Smith, was the first to publish a critique of the Book of Mormon after actually having read it. Among other allegations, he arraigned that Joseph Smith wrote the book to resolve, with a voice of prophecy, theological issues contemporary to its publication. This study undertakes to examine Campbell's charge with regard to atonement doctrine. To assess the statement, this study first identifies the controversies about atonement doctrine in the years prior to the publication of the Book of Mormon, in the Northeastern region of the United States. It then compares the teachings inherent to those controversies to Book of Mormon atonement doctrine. This study concludes that the doctrine in the Book of Mormon does appear to resolve some of the controversies surrounding the doctrine of the atonement in the time and place relative to its publication. However, on other important points of controversy, it does not resolve the issues. Furthermore, as it expounds atonement doctrine, it combines concepts in ways not germane to its environment. It does not fit any model of soteriology that was prevalent in the time period and place of its original publication.

Abstract Scaliger was in no better position to overthrow the standard chronology for Greece and Rome than he was for the Bible. The basic epochs used by ancient scholars and astronomers—the era of the Olympics, the era of the Foundation of Rome, era Nabonassar, era Alexander, the Seleucid era—were established facts by the 1570s, and the only room for major innovation was that soon to be occupied by learned madmen like Johann Herwart von Hohenburg and Thomas Lydiat, who would rewrite all of ancient history to fit purely hypothetical astronomical chronologies.

Abstract The decisive moment in Scaliger’s work on the Thesaurus took place not when he began to sort out the tangles of Jerome’s Latin Chronicle but some two years later, when he finally confronted the Paris manuscript of the world chronicle of George Syncellus. In this historical hall of distorting mirrors Scaliger would make the acquaintance of a legion of long lost historians: the Alexandrian scholars Panodorus and Annianus, Eusebius (speaking his original Greek), Eusebius’ predecessor in Christian chronology Julius Africanus, the Greek antiquaries Alexander Polyhistor and Abydenus, the Babylonian priest Berosus, and the Greek priest Manetho. They would pose a set of analytical and editorial problems so complex that many of them have not yet been solved—problems that would still occupy some of the greatest of classical scholars, like Eduard Schwartz and Felix Jacoby, in modern times.

The article is devoted to one of the Mediterranean aspects of the Napoleonic wars period – the confrontation in South Italy, in the Neapolitan Kingdom. This strategically important region between the West and the East was poorly defended by its owners. Neutrality and intrigues, maneuvering between France and the states-members of the antiFrench coalitions were the basis of their power. After the break of the Amiens treaty in 1803 Napoleon turned his troops to the Neapolitan borders. Britain and Russia responded at once by organizing a joint military operation. Russian troops were sent from Corfu, while the British came from Malta. However, such activity was more of harm to Naples. It convinced Napoleon of the Neapolitan Bourbons’ deceitful nature, and strengthened his desire to conquer the whole of Italy, banishing the monarchs from their kingdom and replacing the vacant throne with his brother Joseph. Having understood the hopelessness of confronting the much bigger French army, the allies decided to retreat. Still, while the Russians returned to Corfu according to the order of Emperor Alexander I, the British made an attempt to defend at least a part of the Kingdom – Sicily – together with the royal court that had emigrated there. By the King’s permission the British soldiers landed on the island and occupied the fortress of Messina. Meanwhile, the French entered Naples. However, for final victory they needed to capture Sicily as well, and Napoleon kept reminding his brother about it. At the same time, the British at Sicily came up with plans of landing on the continent and striking a blow to the French. Just a narrow straight separated the enemies from each other, and during the two years that followed the initiative changed hands. It should be noted that neither side actually tried to win a decisive victory, but rather to save the status of having remained unbeaten.

This Missing Patients Research Guide contains directions for finding out more about Indigenous patients who entered tuberculosis (TB) sanatoriums and hospitals in Manitoba and never returned home. Part One of the guide presents helpful start-up information. First it explains how to gather useful details including names, dates, and locations that will help in the search as well as how to move forward with your research. Then it outlines three useful “Research Tips”: all of the various names of TB treatment hospitals in Manitoba commonly attended by Indigenous patients; instructions for undertaking database searches using keywords; and techniques for linking information between Indian Residential Schools and hospitals. Last, a “Research Case Study” demonstrates some of the techniques and challenges you may encounter when researching Vital Statistics and Indian Residential School records by looking at the lives of three TB patients, Elie Caribou, Joseph Michel, and Albert Linklater. Part Two of the guide explains how to research the location of patient burials associated with nine hospitals where Indigenous patients were treated in Manitoba, including treatment for TB: Dynevor Indian Hospital, Clearwater Lake Indian Hospital, Brandon Indian Sanatorium, Ninette Sanatorium, St. Boniface / St. Vital Sanatorium, Fort Churchill Military Hospital, Norway House Indian Hospital, Fisher River Indian Hospital and Pine Falls Indian Hospital at Fort Alexander. Some of the general research information found in Part One is repeated under the individual hospitals and sanatoriums along with the specific information that may assist in searching for missing patients at each location. At the end of the guide, in Appendix A, you will find a checklist to help you in your research. Appendix B provides contact information for the organizations mentioned in this guide so that you can reach out by phone, email, or mail. Appendix C discusses accessing the records held by The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
