AbstractThis paper discusses the role of agricultural economics research within the land-grant university system. Fundamental differences between research in the biological sciences and the social sciences are delineated. Implications of these differences for experiment station research programs are discussed. Recommendations are made which have potential for enhancing the role of agricultural economics within colleges of agriculture.

Abstract A sketch of Eustace Hall is on the cover of this issue of HortScience. Eustace Hall was designed by Liberty Hyde Bailey and was the first building in the United States devoted exclusively to the study and teaching of horticulture. It was completed in 1888—the year of the founding of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station. It was named Eustace Hall in memory of Harry J. Eustace, Department Head from 1908–1919. In addition to offices and classrooms, the twostory brick structure contained a photographic darkroom and rooms for grafting and storage of nursery stock. Now the home of the University College, it is the second oldest building on campus.

We examine the determinants of agricultural experiment station faculty salaries and find that productivity pays—as manifest by grantsmanship, publications, and the elicitation of competing offers—with no residual evidence of a negative seniority-salary relationship that could signal university monopsony power. This contrasts with findings in the previous literature on faculty salaries. Moreover, national market salary benchmarks, which may proxy for imperfectly observable productivity, correlate almost one-for-one with individual faculty salaries, with individual deviations from peers’ salaries proving essentially random. This evidence is much more consistent with the hypothesis that experiment station faculty salaries are determined in a competitive labor market than with the prevailing wisdom that they are set monopsonistically.

The field experiment was laid out according to factorial Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD), with three replications. The results demonstrated that Nigella sativa gave maximum values for seed yield, fixed oil %, and essential oil% while Nigella arvensis produced maximum values for chemical constituents Thymoquinone and Nigellone at both location and their averages. The %2 organic matter produced maximum for all studied characters. The variation amount of seed yield, oil %, Essential oil % and chemical Constituents Thymoquinone and Nigellone were noticed due to the interaction treatment of N. Arvensis and %2 organic matters, at both locations and their average. Kanipanka location was significantly predominated Qlyasan location in seed yield, essential oil %, Nigellone and Thymoquinone.

Summary Cache Valley virus (cvv), an arbovirus indigenous to the United States, has been implicated as an important teratogenic agent in sheep. The prevalence and distribution of Texas sheep with cvv-specific antibody were investigated. In 1981, 19.1% of 366 sheep located in 22 counties of Texas had antibodies specific for cvv. Of 50 flocks examined in the major sheep-producing counties in Texas, 34 had sheep with antibodies that reacted with cvv, including all sheep tested in 6 flocks that were seropositive. Sera obtained from sheep at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at San Angelo between 1986 and 1989 were also examined for cvv-specific antibody because this flock was the subject of the episode of cvv-associated congenital malformations during the 1986 and 1987 lambing season. Approximately 8.6% of 104 sheep in 1986, 63.4% of 164 in 1987, 11.3% of 44 in 1988, and 71.9% of 89 in 1989 from the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at San Angelo tested were seropositive. The data indicate that cvv infections in sheep were widespread in Texas in 1981 and that the virus is enzootic in sheep at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in San Angelo, where the episode of congenital malformations had initially been reported in 1987.

Annotation:
Calabaza is a pumpkin-like fruit that is grown throughout the tropics and subtropics. In the Caribbean “calabaza” is used in soups and other traditional dishes. In Puerto Rico, the 1987-88 calabaza crop was worth $8 million and the value of the crop in Florida is estimated to exceed $5 million. Mainland production of tropical calabaza types of C. moschata is limited largely to Florida where it is used mostly by those of Cuban descent. Despite the popularity and commercial significance of calabaza, little effort has been directed toward the study of cultural practices or varietal improvement. Only two improved varieties, `Borinquen' introduced by the Puerto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station in the 1940s and `La Primera' introduced by the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station in 1979 are available. Approaches to calabaza improvement including development of plants with shorter vines, incorporation of powdery mildew resistance, and production of uniform, symmetrical, hard-shelled, medium-sized fruit with enhanced nutritional quality in relationship to management systems are discussed.
