The article illustrates that “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” has a number of features characteristic of the novel as a kind of epic: a fairly large volume of work, the epicness of the author's story, full of dialogues and monologues. It is noticed that the plot narrative is not as detailed as in the classic samples of novels, although it has three plot lines. The work is quite simple in compositional structure, and the characters at the time of the story are almost formed. Although “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” tells of the protagonist's private life in inseparable connection with the life of society, there is no scale to its image. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” highlights the features of the following genres: 1) adventure – adventure themes, the saturation of the plot with unusual events and their unexpected turn; the presence of mystery and two groups of characters – heroes and villains; 2) autobiographical – specific facts of the writer's biography, the presence of most characters real prototypes; 3) family and household – the author touches on the life and everyday life of ordinary people, relationships in the family and society, moral values and immoral acts, education and upbringing, friendship and love; 4) school story – the dynamism of the plot from the life of school children; depiction of the activities of the educational institution and participants in the educational process, children's life in extracurricular activities; 5) literary parody – similarity of the internal structure of the work with Don Quixote by Cervantes and the main characters of these works about their lives according to the laws of books, as well as parodies of adventure novels about robbers through children's play, Sunday school books through the image of “bad boy” Tom and on the relationship of adults in love because of Tom's love for Becky; 6) humorous and satirical – Mark Twain considers the realities of life exclusively through the prism of laughter, using various means of comic – from light irony to sarcasm. It is proved that “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is an adventure and humorous story and a work that combines features of several genres, i.e. polygenre.

Abstract John Steinbeck has been the subject of seven biographies. After a brief definition of what constitutes a “literary biography,” these seven biographies are here divided into three classes: non-literary biographies, full-length biographies (which treat Steinbeck’s life as a whole), and books that chronicle an important relationship between Steinbeck and a person who influenced his artistic development. Each biography is discussed in this order. Non-literary biographies include John Steinbeck, Knight Errant: An Intimate Biography of His California Years by Nelson Valjean (1975) and The Intricate Music: A Biography of John Steinbeck by Thomas Kiernan (1979). Full-length biographies include The True Adventures of John Steinbeck, Writer by Jackson J. Benson (1984), John Steinbeck: A Life by Jay Parini (1995), and Mad at the World: A Life of John Steinbeck by William Souder (2020). Biographies that highlight one of Steinbeck’s important relationships include John Steinbeck and Edward F. Ricketts: The Shaping of a Novelist by Richard Astro (1973), and Carol and John Steinbeck: Portrait of a Marriage by Susan Shillinglaw (2013).

What is our obligation, as biographers or historians, to the people we write about? I ask this question in the context of my own writing of a biography, a project in which I have been engaged for nearly 20 years, that is now, I thank God, drawing to a close. The subject of the book is Lucas Alamán, the nineteenth-century Mexican conservative statesman, historian, and entrepreneur. Born in 1792, he died in 1853, a few months into the last government of perennial president Antonio López de Santa Anna, of whose regime he had been the chief architect and whom he served in its early weeks as chief minister.

In The New Biography, Virginia Woolf notes that there is a paradox inherent to the genre of biography, i. e. that of »truth« and »personality«. »[P]ersonality«, she argues further, can only be truly conveyed through aesthetic selection and manipulation of the facts of a life, through fiction. Animal biography challenges both of these categories: what is a true dog character and how close can an author come to a life-like depiction of it? Virginia Woolf’s Flush: A Biography (1933) as well as the earliest English example of animal biography, Francis Coventry’s The History of Pompey the Little or The Life and Adventures of a Lap Dog (1751), are, in their own way, concerned with this issue. Influenced by their generic predecessors, the texts explore the narratological possibilities which an animal biography can offer, from satirical purposes to aesthetic objectives, from mere functionalisation to sentient animals. Woolf is essentially affected by contemporary discussions of biography and the challenges imposed by creating a dog »personality«. This is fundamental for the depiction of Flush as having an individual (anthropomorphised) character, rather than being depicted as a mere, and changeable type. Pompey the Little, in contrast, serves as a mostly silent and apparently objective observer of society, who, by watching and imitating his masters’ manners, offers eighteenth-century society a ruthlessly unembellished look into the mirror. Consequently, his animal character is, for satirical purposes, reduced to a mere type rather than a complex, not to mention »truth[ful]«, depiction of a nonhuman character. In this paper, we argue that genre expectations interact with two further aspects, i.e. literary history and historical as well as philosophical developments, and all three decisively influence how the two texts understand and relate human as well as non-human experience.

With some exaggeration, one could claim that these three biographies, despite their disparate subjects—a seventeenth-century aristocratic lady of the Mughal court, an eighteenth-century French adventurer, and a twentieth-century Muslim intellectual and political figure—all tell the same story. In each case, a figure is born (as it happens, outside the Indian subcontinent) in relatively humble circumstances and emerges as a singular figure in some combination of the political, economic, intellectual life of the day. Each account proceeds chronologically, with the life presented as an unfolding, linear story, the fruit of “developments” and “influences,” in which the protagonist independently takes action. These accounts fit, in short, the genre of biography or autobiography known to us Americans from Benjamin Franklin to Malcolm X, of rags to riches—and, typically, lessons to impart (Ohmann 1970). Each is an example of the canonical form of male biography and autobiography that emerged in Europe from the eighteenth century.

The object of research is the history of the life and literary activity of Anna Semyonovna Murav’eva-Apostol, the mother of the three Decembrists: Mathew, Sergey and Hippolyte. First of all, the author analyzes her translation of the French novel “Le modèle des mères, ou mémoires de madame la marquise de Bezire” (“The Example to Mothers, or the Adventures of the marquise de Bezire”), determines the role of this novel in the biography of the translator. The author of the article describes Anna Murav’eva-Apostols’ relationship with her husband, who was a diplomat and a famous writer. The author also analyzes the Parisian period of her life, when she was left in a country hostile to Russia without a husband and with seven children. The article concludes about the extent of Anna Murav’eva-Apostol's influence on her children.

On the basis of unpublished historical sources, are presented aspects of the private, didactic and scientific biography of Naum Arianovich Nartsov, the first doctor (habilitated) in history, university professor in the Moldovan SSR. With a biography created in the Moldovan autonomy on the left bank of the Dniester River and an activity formed in refuge during the years of the Second World War, the protagonist of the present article presents the signs of a character ,,of perspective” at the time. He served as head of the Department of History of the Peoples of the USSR and of the Department of History of Moldavia of the Faculty of History of the Pedagogical Institute in Chisinau and as head of the Department of History of Moldavia at the Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Moldavian Base of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He drafted the first textbook on the history of Moldova. However, his career was quickly covered up and compromised, largely due to the Stalinist ideological campaigns of the time, the ,,discovery” that ,,the king is naked” and the subjective factor, which did not overshadow the professional scenario of this epochal adventurer.

AbstractGeorges Cziffra (1921–1994) was one of the outstanding figures of Hungarian and international performing arts in the twentieth century. His adventurous life, career, fate, the virtuosity of his technical skills and his international fame have created a cult of his own, especially in recent years. However, his professional career and general biography have not yet been studied, and little to no literature has been written in the two and a half decades since his death. Thus, the reader/researcher can rely almost exclusively on his autobiography (Cannons and Flowers) and on personal reminiscences and anecdotes, which, as my research has shown, resemble a very limited extent of reality. My aim is to reconstruct and present an objective, fact-based biography in the current study, relying on the material of archives and other institutions and libraries I have collected, as well as on the complete contemporary digitized press material.

The research is determined by the transformation of worldview and ideology focuses in the modern national self-identification as well as by the need in generalizing specific processes of reformatting the canonic forms of literary biography. P. Yatsenko’s steampunk novel “Nechui. Nemov. Nebach” forms the basis for the analysis of the way the deconstructive strategy of the alternative biography creation is put into practice. The author’s concept proves to correlate with J. Derrida’s ideas about the denial of the universal source of literary meaning and about the transference of the sense-making centre within the aesthetic object. The concept of the decentralized structure (“free play”), implemented in P. Yatsenko’s novel, leads to the replacement, transformation, and transference of sense-bearing and formal text components. The play strategies of visualization, employed in the novel’s paratext, along with elements of alternativeness manifest the change in the polarity of the traditional binary oppositions and denial of the authoritative centre, which is characteristic of deconstruction. The integrity of Nechui-Levytskyi’s biography, which is realized in P. Yatsenko’s novel through the general worldview and ideological-and-aesthetic context, acquires other centres owing to the devices of structure deconstruction, such as romantic, ideological, adventure-and-mystery, humour-and-farce, religious, symbolic, and axiological centres.

J. G. Mullen was a Gold Coast clerk who published his memoirs, in instalments, in the Gold Coast Leader from 1916 to 1919. In this unusual narrative, he describes his adventures in Cameroon before and during the First World War. His account combines real-life geographical and social details with flamboyant tropes probably derived from imperial popular literature. Mullen's biography and even identity have so far been otherwise untraceable. His text offers glimpses, always enigmatic, of the experience and outlook of a member of the new clerkly class of colonial West Africa. This contribution presents an edited extract from Mullen's text together with a contextualizing and interpretative essay. AbstractIn the 1750s the Danish kingdom and the Moroccan Empire came into contact, and concluded a bilateral treaty. As part of the accord, a Danish chartered company was established. The company was short-lived and the “special relationship” between the two powers soon withered. A result of this episode was a handful of texts that sought to describe Morocco to a Danish audience—an adventure tale, a captive narrative, an orientalist chorography, and a biography of the emperor—which sought to produce truths about the Danish encounters with Morocco, but also truths about the place and the peoples of Morocco. The article discusses these texts, where they originated, to whom they circulated, and what they had to tell about Morocco.

he present paper analyzes Kurt Vonnegut’s complex national roots, since he was an American citizen with a clearly German background who was deprived of any German education during his childhood and, consequently, had to discover the country of his ancestors when he was fighting the Nazis during World War II. Thus, his roots become an everlasting source of influence for Vonnegut. Obviously, and taking into account his rejection of Barthes’ concept of “the death of the author”, Vonnegut’s quest for roots will become a recurring element from his first literary adventures to the last published more mature novels.The main focus of the paper will be centered on how, even without a rich German education, Germany will play a fundamental role throughout the novelist’s whole corpus. In order to achieve this goal, I have examined both Vonnegut’s biography as well as his literary corpus (including fictional and non-fictional Works), together with the many interviews he gave during his long and complex literary career.

The article deals with the story of Carlo Collodi’s “The Adventures of Pinocchio”, translated by Nina Petrovskaya and revised by Aleksey Tolstoy in Berlin at the time of their collaboration in the newspaper “Nakanune”. Attention is drawn to the use of commedia dell’arte characters’ names in international political newspeak in connection with the press appearances of A. Gramsci whose biography is closely linked with pro-Bolshevik circles in Berlin and Moscow. The interest in the translation of “The Adventures of Pinocchio” in the Russian press in the 1920s was most probably linked to the beginning of Soviet-Italian relations and the choice of future course facing Russian emigrants. The hypothesis of the different positions of Aleksey Tolstoy and Maksim Gorky concerning the question of return to Russia is put forward. The circumstances of the choice of the book for translation and the alignment of translation by Nina Petrovskaya and processing of the translation by Aleksey Tolstoy are described. Emphasis is placed on the anti-fascist movement, the centre of which was Florence, the city of Carlo Collodi. Petrovskaya’s anti-fascist views and Tolstoy’s pro-Soviet stance enable us to see the tale from the perspective of social struggle and personal choice. The roles of both Russian authors in the work on the book and their relationship to the Italian-Russian patronage family Signorelli are clarified. The re-addressing of the tale, which predetermined the further oblivion of the Berlin book, is explained: the new translation was addressed not so much to children as to adults, Russian émigrés.

The article reviews writer’s biographies as a kind of literary biography genre. There are revealed the thematic and artistic features characteristic to this subgenre of literature. The author systematizes the subgenre’s specific features and shows a wide range of their possible implementation at the present stage. The material for the study was selected among the works that won the national award “Big Book”. In less than fifteen years of the award’s existence, writers’ biographies have taken first place twice (D.L. Bykov’s book about B.L. Pasternak and P.V. Basinsky’s book about L.N. Tolstoy) and second place four times (A.N. Varlamov’s book about A.N. Tolstoy, L.I. Saraskina’s book about A.I. Solzhenitsyn, S.A. Shargunov’s book about V.P. Kataev, and the joint work by A.A. Kabakov and E.A. Popov about V.I. Aksyonov). All these works are analyzed sequentially (in order of receiving the award) in the article. On the one hand, this allows us to identify the features of each of them, on the other hand — to find common typological features that are characteristic of the subgenre in question. A distinctive feature of the book by D.L. Bykov is the deepest “sensitive immersion” of one poet (the author) in the creative work and world perception of another (his character). A.N. Varlamov is characterized by comparison of several sources in order to reveal complete truthfulness. P.V. Basinsky has a specific angle in which the writer’s biography is shown (he puts forward the “family idea”, the most important for Tolstoy himself). L.I. Saraskina focuses on the personality of A.I. Solzhenitsyn, considering his biography as the main artistic work of this author. A.A. Kabakov and E.A. Popov build the text of V.I. Aksyonov’s biography in the form of a lively, casual conversation, while the objectivity of the written is confirmed by a variety of documents submitted in the appendix. S.A. Shargunov traces the reflection of V.P. Kataev’s unusual life, full of real adventures, in the writer’s works.Nevertheless, all these works have common features. Each of them create a Russian writer’s living and full-blooded image, both tightly included in the historical and cultural context of the corresponding era, and shown in the indissoluble unity of the writer’s personal destiny and creative heritage (which is carefully analyzed). All books are written based on carefully studied biographical materials and documents, including archival ones. The works’ large volume allows including these materials directly in their text.

William Harlow Reed was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1848. His adventurous spirit led him to the Rocky Mountain West to take positions guiding, hunting game, and fighting Indians. In 1877, while working as a foreman for the Union Pacific Railroad at Como, Wyoming, he accidentally discovered large bones on the nearby ridge. These specimens, reported to O.C. Marsh at Yale University, heralded him into a career in vertebrate paleontology that he would pursue for the next 38 years. Although frustrated by certain aspects of field work and lack of recognition as a field paleontologist, he was a diligent and loyal collector for Marsh. He gave this same dedication in later years to W. C. Knight at the University of Wyoming and W. J. Holland at the Carnegie Museum. Although not formally educated in the sciences, Reed's desire to learn, interest in natural phenomena, and association with the notable paleontologists of his time, allowed him to gain a background in geology and paleontology. After more than 25 years of significant discoveries of dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, mammals, and cycads in Wyoming, Reed was given the position as curator of the museum and instructor in geology at the University of Wyoming in 1904. He held this position until his death in 1915.

The article demonstrates the regularity of Filippov's ideological evolution in the context of his social origin and connections at various stages of his life in Mogilev, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novorossiysk and other cities, in various positions. The thinker's transition from right-wing monarchical views to a national-democratic and left-wing socio-economic program allowed him to build his career successfully both before and after the October Revolution. Uniqueness and typicality as two aspects of Filippov's life raise important questions for historical biographistics.

The essay is an analysis of the most important, yet actually quite sporadic artistic adventure of Schulz, which was fiction writing. The question discussed is apparently paradoxical: was Bruno Schulz a writer? The author argues that there is a difference between a writer and a man of letters, i.e. someone who is a professional in the literary field. Schulz never became the latter and this is what makes his biography significantly different from those of the typical literati among whom he had many friends. In comparison to them, Schulz wrote very little, started writing quite late, and the period when he really was a writer lasted only several years. One might say that writing fiction indeed rather happened to him – it was not a permanent disposition of his artistic existence. That had crucial consequences for the form of his writing.

Two studies were conducted to investigate gender differences in a sample of young South African readers from poor communities. In the first study, the self-reported reading preferences of 2 775 readers on a mobile phone platform supplied by the FunDza Literacy Trust were surveyed. Both male and female readers indicated that they liked four genres in particular: romance, drama, non- fiction, and stories with specific South African content. There were nevertheless some differences, such as that a higher percentage of males liked stories involving sport. The second study examined the unique FunDza site visits made by readers, as a proxy measure of what they actually were reading. Four genres stood out: romance, drama, biography, and action/adventure. Again the similarity between male and female readers was noticeable, although many more females than males read content on the site.

Maycock speaks volumes in describing the Ferrar family's transition in 1625 as a movement from one venture (the Virginia Company) to another, the “great adventure” of Little Gidding. In this one phrase Maycock comprehends the view of its founders that no less than the Virginia Company's epic plantation of true religion among the Indians, the community at Little Gidding ranks as a heroic enterprise, the discursive preoccupation of which proves to be the very nature of Christian heroism itself. Even if readers of the Ferrar papers do not know how highly Nicholas Ferrar prized the Acts and Monuments, it is impossible for them to miss the Foxeian narratives of “heroic suffering” so pervasive in the “story books” left as folio records of the dialogues performed by the so-called Little Academy.

Abstract This essay examines the manner in which Dave Eggers’s recent work of literary nonfiction, The Monk of Mokha (2018), sets out to amplify the voices of the marginalized by chronicling the adventures of a young Yemeni-American in search of the best coffee in the world. This takes the protagonist from the infamous neighborhood of his birth in San Francisco, “a valley of desperation in a city of towering wealth,” to his trials and tribulations in the war-torn homeland of Yemen. I will argue that the narrative, which blurs the lines between fiction and nonfiction and combines history, politics, biography and thriller, highlights the American entrepreneurial zeal and contagious exuberance which still feed the immigrant American Dream and proves that social mobility in the United States is still attainable, sometimes as a result of chasing the world’s most dangerous cup of coffee. Moreover, I argue that the protagonist’s endeavor can be read within the larger context of contemporary political consumption as an example of social justice activism and ethics-driven buying.

AbstractNew approaches built over the past ten years make it possible to address several long-standing questions regarding Guiron le Courtois. In particular, these studies illuminate ambiguities related to the literary origins of the protagonist and of his family. Guiron’s lineage as well as that of Galeholt le Brun, his mentor, include powerful individuals; and yet these strong characters remain peripheral, seldom crossing into the orbit of the Arthurian court. Of their lives only certain segments are known, and these alternate with imprisonment and incognito chivalric adventures. The Roman de Guiron, the core narrative of the cycle, most likely drew the protagonist’s name from the tradition of Arthurian lais but reinvented from scratch his chivalric biography, playing on the ambiguity of the relations between Guiron’s family and the Bruns, the family of Galeholt. One mirrors the other, and both seem to converge towards the archaic figures of the giant and the bear, while the plot unfolds in an unusual retro-chronology, drawing the reader’s sight to their origins.

AbstractThe appearance of the following pages might suggest an "intellectual biography". My purpose is not, though, to offer such a simple thing (interesting as it might be). Indeed, I would like to follow the evolution of Gauthier's thought not only to show how a thinker evolved from a particular view about a particular problem toward a quite original and suggestive formulation, but also to deepen our comprehension of moral contractarianism and its implications, by means of its contextualization. For this reason, I will focus not on Gauthier's philosophical production as a whole (we will pay little attention to his historical works, for example), but on the papers and works that mark the line toward moral contractarianism as it is found in Morals by Agreement (henceforth MA). The trajectory we are about to go over is not, therefore, only a personal adventure (though it will be displayed this way), but (if I may use this pompous language) the adventure of ideas. This will not be an easy journey. Our focus on the historical development of concepts will prevent us from giving a fully systematic account of every one of them. The unfamiliar reader may be disappointed as we use somewhat strange terms without completely explaining their meaning. We beg acquiescence with our method, hoping that, on the whole, the essential ideas will be understandable without a detailed discussion.

For four centuries the book of Enoch was lost to Western Christianity and Judaism. That was until 1773, when Scottish explorer James Bruce brought back from Ethiopia ‘three’ copies of it to France and England. Yet, by the end of the eighteenth century there was another copy of the book of Enoch in Rome, in the library of Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli. This was an Ethiopic manuscript that, around 1825, would be acquired by Angelo Mai for the Vatican Library, where it is currently preserved (Vat. et. 71). The provenance of the manuscript has remained until now unknown. Through the recovery of eighteenth-century neglected letters and documents, this article uncovers a forgotten chapter in James Bruce's biography, his adventurous journey to Rome immediately after his return from Ethiopia, his meeting with Pope Clement XIV, and the ‘fourth’ Enoch manuscript he donated to the Antonelli Library. Personal and political reasons led Bruce to suppress the memory of his precious gift.

The paper analyses the actions of Ivanko, a Bulgarian nobleman, possibly a member of the ruling family of the Asenides, who in 1196 killed the ruling tsar, Asen, and escaped to Constantinople once his plan to take control of the country failed. Owing to the benevolence of Alexios III Angelos, he joined the Byzantine military and very quickly rose through its ranks until he became the military commander of the region of Philippopolis. In 1198 or 1999 he defected and created an independent dominion on the slopes of the Stara Planina massif, precariously balanced between Bulgaria and the empire, exploiting to his own advantage the constant state of warfare between the two polities. His adventure was short-lived: in 1200 he was captured through deception by the Byzantines, taken prisoner, and presumably executed. While his political career was very short, his importance for the history of medieval Bulgaria is not to be underestimated. It is a testimony of the fluidity of the political situation at the Bulgaro-Byzantine border, whose instability often allowed ambitious and cunning local commanders to carve up autonomous dominions, and of the difficulties experienced by the central power in keeping control of the peripheral areas of the state. It is also proof of the constantly shifting ethnic and cultural allegiances of the citizens of those polities, entangled between different and often conflicting identities, usually regarded as irreconcilable but that were actually the object of a continuous negotiation and adjusting. Ivanko is an interesting case study in regard to all of those factors, especially when considered within the larger phenomenon of provincial separatism in the imperial (and Bulgarian) lands between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century.

The article is devoted to comprehending the creative cooperation of the outstanding Victorians Ch. Dickens and W. Collins, who were co-authors for a decade and a half, as well as to the study of the peculiarities of the novel “No Exit”, which was not republished in Russia from the end of the 19th century until 2021 and was virtually unknown to the Russian-speaking reader. The relevance of the article is due to the need to build a coherent and consistent history of the development of English literature of the Victorian epoch in the domestic literary consciousness, an important part of which is the legacy of its masters, as well as the elimination of gaps in the creative biography of the largest figures of Victorianism. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time in Russian English studies a gap in the reception of the creative tandem of Ch. Dickens and W. Collins has been filled: the key studies of their heritage have been comprehended; the history of their creative union has been studied; the novel “No Exit” in the context of the creative biography of Ch. Dickens and W. Collins was analyzed; the features of the generic (interweaving of epic and dramatic elements) and genre synthesis (combination of gothic, detective, adventure beginning) of the novel are revealed. The authors of the article used comparative historical, biographical, sociocultural methods, as well as the method of holistic analysis of a work of art.

Abstract Psychoanalytic thinking was born in the psychoanalytic relationship and its biography begins in the first persson plural, us. Maybe this plural, me and my patient, is at first only in the mind of the therapist clearly stated. My patient and I are concerned from the beginning to find together those mental, emotional connections that will open the way for the therapeutic process. We are, as Donnel Stern says, partners in thought, a paradoxical thought, which feeds and creates from the intimate substance of our encounter, in the cabinet, but also in the mind of each of us, in which we receive the Other, in all the metamorphosis of transference. Probably the most difficult thing in this adventure is to succeed in creating a relational field, often implicit, in which it is possible to meet deeply the two lives and histories of ours, from which then is born the narrow edge of therapeutic intimacy that Ehrenberg so beautifully and honestly uncovered in her book.

I decided to undertake this interview with Professor Ellen, simply because I thought such a distinguished career deserved to be marked as he was retiring. Roy was happy to make time for our interviews, in the form of loosely structured conversation which, like the Arabian Nights, Roy pointed out, could have gone on forever, but I decided to draw the line at three sessions. Perhaps it could, and will go on to form part of a more in-depth biography, as I continued to discover other aspects and adventures of Roy’s interesting life in the course of other contexts, much as one does in the field. Much is known about what ethnobiologists and anthropologists say about another people’s lives; less is known about their own, apart from rare reflections, diaries and memoires. I found Roy’s reflections a source of comfort as I embarked on my own PhD fieldwork, reassuring me as I fumbled around, making my own unique but comparable mistakes among the insights I gleaned. The following is an edited version of the original interview. I hope it will be as enjoyable to the reader as it was to me working on it.

The article aims to present the wartime biography of Stefan Csorich, a distinguished Olympian in ice hockey. He was born in Nowy Sącz on September 25, 1921. He grew up in Krynica Zdrój at 422 Lipowa Street. He owes his name to a Hungarian ancestor who was an engineer (built bridges, railway viaducts) and settled in Krynica Zdrój. Until the outbreak of World War II, he managed to graduate from the local primary school, start studying at the newly opened private gymnasium and high school (owned by dr. Roman Molęda). After the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1931 organized in Krynica, he began his adventure with this sport discipline. The war interrupted a brilliantly heralded career. He was a participant in the September 1939 campaign. As a result of the turmoil of war, he was in France, Switzerland and England, among others. After the war, in 1946, he returned to Poland to his hometown. There he continued his career in ice hockey. He appeared 52 times for the Polish national team (1946–1957). He was the scorer of 34 goals. He participated in the World Championships in 1947 (in Prague, where he won the title of the king of goalscorers), 1955 (in the Federal Republic of Germany) and 1957 (in Moscow). He was at the Olympics in St. Moritz (1948) and Oslo (1952). For the 1956 Olympics in Cortina dʼAmpezzo he did not receivea passport for political reasons. He died on July 15, 2008, and was buried in Krynica-Zdrój.

In his best-seller and adventure novel Sidi. An Account of the Frontier (2019), Arturo Pérez-Reverte recreates part of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar᾿s first exile already portrayed in the first part of the Cantar de Mio Cid. This recreation aims to awake more interest in Spanish medieval history and to redress the Cid᾿s image after its manipulation during Franco᾿s times. The aim of this study is to analyze the heroic image of Cid in Pérez-Reverte᾿s fiction—an image in line with that presented by historians—and the representation of violence and brutality among Christians and Muslims in the eleventh-century frontier world. Though war idealization may not be easily avoided in the biography of a legendary hero, Pérez-Reverte still provides a nuanced, critical representation of violence. This paper examines the trends and meanings of translation and publication of cultural books by the JoseonYasogyoseohoi(The Christian Literature Society of Korea) during the Japanese colonial period, and Ann Judson Sajeok(Ann Judson), Yurakhwangdogi(The Swiss Family Robinson) and GeurusoPhyorugi(Robinson Crusoe), which are adventure stories for missionary purposes. The goal is to identify the internal structure of and its influence on the development of travel literature. As a personal biography of a great man, Ann Judson and the drift novels Yurakhwangdogi and GeurusoPhyorugi, although their genres are different, have something in common in terms of travel experience, drifting, and cross-cultural contact. This means that these works contributed greatly to the development of Korean travel literature, but there are certain differences in the internal structure of the works depending on the differences in genre. Due to the nature of biographies of great people, Ann Judson has a relatively simple narrative structure in which the flow of time and movement through space are relatively simple. In comparison, other two drifted novels are works that appropriately embody the motif of ‘travel → drifting → settlement → return’, and are works that appropriately reproduce the chronotope as a space-time complex at the level of travel literature. In particular, the illustrations used in Geuruso are pictures that specifically express the time and space signified within the text, and become noteworthy elements in relation to the restructuring of space and time in travel literature. In this way, adventure stories for missionary purposes can be said to be important works in terms of the development of travel literature, even if Bible translations remain or cultural prejudices based on civilizational discourse are inherent.

bro’Town is a popular animated comedy whose language is that of stylized performance. It deals with the adventures of a group of five teenage Pasifika boys growing up in Auckland, New Zealand, and showcases performances of the Englishes spoken by Polynesian immigrants and their descendants. A range of varieties are performed on the show by a handful of actors. We analyzed several linguistic variables in the speech of three of the main characters — the 14-year-old twins Vale and Valea, and their father Pepelo. Pepelo produces high levels of the vernacular features of DH-stopping and TH-fronting, consistent with his biography as a second-language speaker whose pronunciation is influenced by his native language, Samoan. His sons, as second-generation speakers, have these features too but at lower frequencies. The twins also differ from each other, with the streetwise Valea, who is more aligned with Pasifika youth culture, producing higher levels of the variables than the studious Vale. Pepelo produces unaspirated initial /p/s, again a Pasifika language feature, while his sons do not. Linking-/r/, however, appears to index a youth identity but not adult immigrant status. We conclude that performed varieties can reflect the linguistic production of a community in their selection of specific features. The quantitative patterns can be quite variable, but here succeed in indexing salient identities for their audiences.

The article considers a series of possible allusions implied by the name of “prince de Montbard” in Captain Lebyadkin’s monolog in The Devils. The article analyzes the traditional reference to the allegedly historical figure of the buccaneer Monbars (or Montbars) presumably featured in several adventure novels. We point out that the buccaneer Montbars probably never existed; we consider the novel by Jean-Baptiste Picquenard traditionally cited as a work about the historical Montbars and several novels by Gustave Aimard (published in Russian translations by the time Dostoevsky started working on The Devils). In all those novels, the hero called Montbars is either unrelated to the alleged prototype or is given a fictional biography. The literary allusion to Montbars is important both as an assertion of Lebyadkin’s Romantic ambitions and as an indication of his social ambitions and his dissatisfaction with his own personality that he would like to replace with another’s, for which purpose he aptly selects a provisionally real Montbars. The article also considers a possible historical allusion to André de Montbard, one of the founders of the Order of the Temple. This allusion is connected to the accusations against the Knights Templar who had been charged with apostasy. The article also considers the meaning of the title “prince” and its political and religious connotations that go far beyond romantic adventure-seeking. The ultimate conclusion is that it is hardly possible and necessary to determine some singular and unequivocal literary or historical reference. The range of meanings implied by the name of “prince de Montbard” generally fits in the overall concept of The Devils as a novel about metaphysical imposture that includes the comical Captain Lebyadkin among potential impostors.
