Abstract: This study was carried out with the objectives of determining the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Spanish minors; identify the possible relationships between them and PA habits in adults; and explain whether these relationships have socio-economic variables for the sample under study. To achieve them, a cross-sectional observational study was carried out based on data from the last available Spanish National Health Survey (2017), including 7598 surveys answered by adults living in households comprising minors older than 5 years old. The proportion of overweight minors decreases as adults’ educational level is higher. Likewise, the number of underweight children increases slightly along with adults’ increased level of education. In general, minors engage in physical activity more frequently than adults (38.1% of sedentary adults compared to 13.7% of minors) and this frequency increases together with higher adults’ level of education. The results obtained show that Spanish minors tend to replicate the physical-activity-related lifestyles of adults whom they live with. This makes adults the target population to influence primary and secondary prevention health policies with the aim to improve their health and that of children around them.

Introduction: Despite the care need expressed by older adults, sexuality is a human dimension that is hardly addressed by Health Sciences. Objective: To describe the meaning of older adults' sexuality based on the influence exerted by the world and the body.Method: A phenomenological study guided by the concepts of Merleau Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception, conducted in a city from central Mexico with groups of older adults. Intentional sampling with the following selection criteria: older adults with preserved verbal communication ability, with no cognitive decline (≥24 points in the Mini-Mental State Examination), and with legal decision capacity; the participants were 16 older adults, considering the data saturation criterion. Virtual phenomenological interviews were conducted, analyzed according to Giorgi's phenomenological method. The ethical and qualitative rigor criteria were respected. Results: Three topics emerged from the units of meaning identified, namely: 1) The world as experienced by older adults; 2) Possibilities of the current body; and 3) Stereotypes and preconceptions about older adults' sexuality. Conclusions: Older adults' sexuality is influenced by the context where they interact and by the experiences underwent in this aspect throughout their lives. Diseases and physical limitations affect aged people's sexuality and hinder its expression; in this same sense, the stereotypes and preconceptions about sexuality existing in society and in the family condition sexual expression and force older adults themselves to repress their sexuality.

INTRAPHAMILIARY VIOLENCE IN THE OLDER ADULTS ABSTRACT In the life cycle of human beings when they reach the stage of old age or older adults, these are often victims of violence by their families or caregivers, diminishing the quality of life of people in old age and also affecting their close family. This study determines the prevalence of domestic violence in the elderly and which family member uses this violence. A qualitative, cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out. The sample chosen was 50 older adults of both sexes. A survey with 20 closed-ended questions and a psychological interview were used to collect the data. The results show that there is intrafamily violence towards the elderly in 26% indicates that it is economic violence, followed by 22% who state that there is negligence and abandonment of their relatives, the same percentage of 22% is obtained in physical violence, while 20% is psychological and 10% sexual violence. Therefore, it can be determined that domestic violence is perpetrated in all its forms in older adults, with the economic form prevailing over other forms of violence. It is also determined that the aggressors are in most cases a close relative, including their children and spouse. KEYWORDS: Older adults; domestic violence; old age.

Institutions of formal education have a survival interest in the question of why most adults do not participate in more formal adult education. This study, using a descriptive approach, gathered evidence from 16 adults (8 males and 8 females) who had not participated in formal education in the past 10 years. The evidence gathered was used to answer the question, How do adults, who have not participated in formal education as adults, describe their reasons for not participating? The evidence was gathered from multiple individual interviews and two focus groups.Much of the previous research in discovering why adults did not participate in formal education has been done from the perspective of the participating adult. An examination of this previous research identified job related reasons as the prominent reasons adults gave for participation in formal education. Barriers/deterrents to participation were most often identified as lack of time and money; however, the study presented here found neither money nor time reported as important reasons for nonparticipation in formal education for adults. The informants in this study answered the question clearly. They did not participate in formal education for adults because they found no need for, or value in, additional formal education. Furthermore, they had no interest in exploring potential benefits. Some research on participation in formal adult education shows some adults who participated, did so for social reasons. The informants in the study presented here may have avoided formal education for social reasons, that is, a fear of failure in that context. All informants were satisfied with the way they learned needed skills and/or knowledge. Previous formal education, schooling, was not recognized as an important contributor to the informants' current or future adult lifestyles. Schooling, as described by the informants, was not credited with providing them with understanding, knowledge, and/or skills required to find employment or to support or enhance their adult lifestyles.Hands-on, and less often reading, were the methods employed by the informants and their peers. There seemed to be a threat to their self esteem if they were involved in formal adult education to gain skill and/or knowledge.

In order to create more efficient, useful alcohol treatment and intervention methods tailored specifically for the older population, it is important to understand the reasons that older adults perceive that they consume alcohol. For this reason, this study explored older adults’ perceptions regarding why they use alcohol. Older adults, age 60 and older, were surveyed through questionnaires completed at senior community centers within San Bernardino County. This was a mixed method design that used qualitative and quantitative analysis for the purpose of exploring the most frequently reported reasons for why older adults use alcohol. The main finding of the study is that older adults in the sample most frequently reported using alcohol for “having fun and celebration” and for “social reasons.” However, it is important to note that older adults reported a variety of motivations for using alcohol. Further research is suggested to determine correlations between demographics, alcohol use patterns, and older adults’ perceptions of why they use alcohol.

The transformations took place during modernity and post-modernity changed in a significant way the relationship between the younger and older generations. In traditional societies, there was a hierarchy between the adult knowledge, based on past and tradition, and the acceptance of this knowledge by the younger people. The contemporary and its discourses provide a different scenario indeed, in which the adolescence is taken as an ideal, the speed of transformations is astonishing and the new, the modern has a predominant place in the values of the contemporary man. In that sense, images solidified by time and tradition change, altering relationships between young people and adults. The aim of this work was to investigate the image of adulthood that todays adolescents have, from the evaluation that they make of todays adults, from the sense that young people have of this place and from what they value in an adult. Participated in the research a total of 520 students from public and private high schools and the tool consisted of a questionnaire with 24 questions, each containing four options, and two open questions. The results reveal a tendency from young people to evaluate negatively the adults concerning their performances in the public sphere (political, environment, education and media) and question the adults capacity on those attributes traditionally attributed to that place (confidence, wisdom, model to be followed, ethical) and, nevertheless, 63% of individuals believed to owe obedience to todays adults. Money, unemployment and competition for jobs in the world were revealed as some of the greatest concerns of todays adults and of young people about their future. Apparently, the image of an adult, place of knowledge and guide for the younger ones doesnt show the consistency that it had in the past and few seem to be the possible models of admiration available for today\'s young people. The meaning of being an adult and occupying that place seems to lean toward a work and a construction exclusively personal and individual.

Adults are constituting an ever increasing, often integral part, of todays’ learners, from elementary level to higher education. Their life situations are different from the traditional learners’ in many ways. The aim of this literature study was to identify, describe and categorise factors related to learning and teaching that supports or impede learning and that may be important for teachers of adults to know. The study resulted in four main themes into which found categories were subordinated. These themes were social learning environment, the supporting and motivating role of the teacher, teaching mode and method and motivation.

The purpose of this thesis is two-fold. Firstly, to probe the social positioning of 14-15 year old Northern Irish teenagers within an adult-centred society, utilising underage alcohol consumption as a window into exploring this issue. Secondly, this thesis seeks to demonstrate the utility of adopting a Goffinanian theoretical perspective when analysing "childhood" and "youth" - an approach which offers an integrative framework encompassing the interrelationship of the self, social structures, emotions, resistance and agency. The research design is qualitative, drawing upon written exercises, pictorial prompts and focus group interviews with 251 teenagers, conducted within twelve schools located in East and West Belfast. Three themes emerged from the empirical data which illuminate aspects of teenage social positioning within an adult world: the profaned self, the productive self and the projected self. Firstly, the profaned self directs attention to adult-child relations and the overarching, mortifying categorical identity which teenagers are routinely ascribed within adult society. Secondly, the productive self relates to aspects of teenage selfhood which are . exhibited indirectly through teenage normative practices - an accomplishment which seemingly exhibits autonomous agency, but which remains modulated by adult standards. Thirdly, the projected self explores the gendered, classed and ethno-national distinctions generated among teenagers which mark out identities within their overarching categorical positioning, although the wider adult structure still interlaces evaluations of permissible performances. These findings are subsequently analysed through Goffinan's concept of "moral career", demonstrating how the teenage self is patterned by an individual's social position within the wider institutional complex of adult society. The overall thrust of the research contends that even though the self is actualised as a stance-taking entity, the overarching impact of adult structures merely opens up apparent possibilities for manoeuvring selfhood, whilst constraining teenagers to a restrictive idiom of real choices.

Background: Stuttering and cluttering are related but contrasting disorders of fluency. Whilst stuttering has received a great deal of attention in the research literature over the last 100 years, cluttering has remained relatively neglected. There is ongoing debate regarding whether there is a language/phonological component to cluttering or whether it is solely a motoric and/or rate-based disorder. The following thesis aims to investigate the phonological encoding skills of both adults who stutter (AWS) and adults who clutter (AWC) in contrast to fluent controls. Method: Three groups were used, comprising 14 AWS, 14 AWC and 15 matched controls. A variety of phoneme monitoring and syllable detection tasks designed to eliminate possible motor influences were used. Results: It was found that AWS and AWC performed in a similar manner; they were both less accurate in detecting phonemes in real words than controls and in detecting phonemes in silent picture naming. There were no differences (between AWS, AWC and controls), however, in syllable detection accuracy or in time taken to make judgments on monitoring for phonological differences, nor were there any differences in phoneme monitoring in non-words or in the accuracy of phoneme monitoring in silent reading. Discussion: Findings lend some support to the notion that phonological encoding may be impaired in both AWS and AWC. Findings are discussed in relation to phonological theories such as the covert repair hypothesis. Alternative interpretations, wider implications and the impact on participants accuracy of factors such as the type of phoneme being monitored for and the length of the word used are all discussed in greater depth.

First described over a century ago, dietary treatments for adults with epilepsy were rarely used until the last two decades. Studies show that ketogenic diets are feasible and effective in adults as well as children, and there is growing use in adults with medically refractory epilepsy. Children on ketogenic diets are also transitioning to adulthood and require ongoing neurology care. The classic ketogenic diet and the modified Atkins diet are most commonly used in adults. Results are encouraging, with response rates potentially rivaling those of new antiepileptic drugs. Dietary therapies offer adults with epilepsy an alternative that may reduce antiepileptic drug burden. While lipid elevations and gastrointestinal side effects are common, many patients find intentional weight loss and improved cognition as additional secondary benefits. The ketogenic diet is also a promising therapy for refractory status epilepticus in adults. This chapter examines the use of dietary therapies in adult epilepsy.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life limiting genetic disease affecting Caucasians. The life expectancy of this cohort has increased and is predicted to reach retirement age. As most CF patients are diagnosed from birth, they undergo educational and management programs throughout their lives. However numerous studies have identified various knowledge gaps. This paper presents a scoping literature review of the available educational interventions for adult CF patients. This review follows the framework as outlined by Arksey et al. [9]. A search string is entered into four databases and the resulting literature is downloaded into the academic reference manager software, Mendeley version 1.16.1. The manuscripts are then subjected to title, abstract, and introduction refinement. The remaining manuscripts are then reviewed under the following headings: 1) Aims/Objective, 2) Patient Demographic, 3) Educational Focus, 4) Research Type Conducted, 5) Methodologies, 6) Results, and 7) Author Noted Limitations. Of the 3649 manuscripts, only eight remained after the refinement stages. A significant amount of the papers that were excluded focused on CF pediatric patients only. Of the remaining papers, four manuscripts focused solely on CF adults. Seven of the papers identified a range of issues with CF education, including anxiety, knowledge gaps, and a lack of educational teams. Five papers introduced an educational intervention, only one was for CF adults only. Two of the interventions were ICT based. Of the manuscripts, one intervention that targeted both children and adults was reported as being implemented into the hospital services long term. From the final papers reviewed, it is apparent that there appears to be an issue with adult CF education and knowledge gaps. With CF survival rates rising and a new aging CF population emerging, there is a need for educational programs and interventions to meet the changing needs of the CF adult population.

With an increase in the older adult population aged 65 and over in the United States, there has also been an increase in the incidence of injury amongst this age group. In 2003, injury was the sixth leading cause of death in adults aged 65–74 and seventh in adults aged 75–84 [1,2]. Additionally, the cost of non-fatal injuries doubled from ages 65–74 to ages 75–84, showing not only a potential for increased injury risk in older adults, but also an increase in economic burden with age [1,3]. However, age is just one factor contributing to the increased injury risk. Obesity has also been shown to impact injury risk [4,5]. Research has shown that overweight adults over the age of 65 have a greater risk for impaired physical function and injury [4,5].

ITP is thought to be caused primarily by peripheral platelet destruction, but recent work has suggested that platelet production may also be impaired. Although the clinical course in children usually differs from that in adults, no distinctions have been established with regard to marrow characteristics. To evaluate megakaryocyte (mega) responses in this disease we examined mega size, ploidy, maturation and morphology in 8 children and in 8 adults with ITP and in 8 "normal" marrows (4 children, 4 adults). Marrows were prepared by a buffy coat wedge smear or by a cover slip squash method. Control values differed according to the type of marrow smear used. From 100-300 Feulgen-stained megas were examined in each specimen, as previously described. Wright-stained material was also examined. With the squash method megas from normal children and adults had similar characteristics. The megas of each child with acute ITP showed marked increases in size (volumes were 4X normal), ploidy (as high as 1024 N; medians were 64N, or 2 doublings higher than normals), and maturation stage (86% mature forms vs 43%). In contrast, none of the marrows of adults with acute or chronic ITP (1 with mild, 4 moderate, and 3 with severe thrombocytopenias) showed any stimulation of megas. Overall, their megas were normal in size, ploidy and maturation. Occasional dissociation of mega ploidy and maturation was seen, but not enough to alter the profiles of any one parameter. There were no obvious or suggestive signs of "damage" to the megas of children or adults with ITP. In conclusion, the megas of childhood ITP showed a pattern of marked stimulation of size, ploidy and maturation, as seen in animals injected with antiplatelet serum. The failure of adult marrows to response in these parameters to thrombocytopenia may be pathogenetically related to the chronicity of adult ITP.

This article is devoted to revealing the theoretical background of dyslexia in young adults to substantiate the chosen approach for mobile learning games. Education in the 21st century has changed just the same as young adult learners; especially those who have some developmental problems, such as developmental dyslexia. If they are lucky to encounter smart teachers, understanding parents, siblings and peers, they succeed in the education system, they reach learning goals and are satisfied with their life quality. If there are gaps between regulations, rules and the real situation, learners lose interest in learning and especially in reading, they do not achieve their learning goals and sometimes they even experience school failure. Educators have to think about new methods, new approaches to diminish the possibilities of failure, to renew interest in learning (and especially in reading) to achieve education goals and to ensure the possibility for better life quality. The article deals with theoretical findings in differences of dyslexia in young adults and the role of technologies and educational mobile games in the learning process.

To improve the fit of head worn products for Chinese adults, this study utilized the principal component analysis (PCA) panel on 15 facial measurements extracted from 3,358 3D Chinese adult head scans. The PCA panel covers 95.80% of Chinese population. All samples were divided into 5 size categories based on the differences among eye and facial morphology, and 3D reference headforms were developed respectively based on the statistics of these measurements. The headforms can be used for head-worn products like eyewear, VR headsets, eye and face PPE and etc.

The COVID-19 pandemic shock affected obesity rates differently across distinct population subgroups with existing obesity prevalence disparities. This report measures changes in U.S. adult obesity rates overall and across a wide variety of demographic and socioeconomic subgroups during the first year of the pandemic--March 2020 to March 2021. While the U.S. obesity rate significantly increased by 1.3 percentage points (pp) in the overall adult population during the first year of the pandemic, pronounced increases occurred among younger adults aged 20-39 (2.0 pp), adults with a household income eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (2.5 pp), adults residing in the West Census region (2.8 pp), and adults with less than a high school diploma (3.3 pp).
