Life writing scholar Julia Watson critiques the practice of genealogy as “in every sense conservative” (300) because it traditionally charts and enshrines a family’s collective biography through biologistic, heteronormative, and segregated routes. My Americanist contribution, however, zooms in on a recent development of autobiographical works that establish narratives of origin beyond normative boundaries of race and heterosexual reproduction. A number of predominantly white queer parents of black adoptees have turned their family history into children’s read-along books as a medium for pedagogical empowerment that employs first-person narration in the presumable voice of the adoptee. In Arwen and Her Daddies (2009), for instance, Arwen invites the reader into a story of family formation with the following opening words: “Do you know how I and my Dads became a family?” My analysis understands these objects as verbal-visual origin stories which render intelligible a conversion from differently radicalized strangers into kin. I frame this mode of narration as ‘adoptee ventriloquism’ that might tell us more about adult desires of queers for familial recognition than about the needs of their adopted children.

Through 47 interviews with 56 White parents who attend culture camps, the authors analyze race discourse and practices in transracially adoptive families. The authors document parents’ use of two discursive frames, colorblindness and race consciousness, and find that small subsamples of parents use either race consciousness or colorblindness exclusively, while the majority (66 percent) entwine the two discursive frames together. Because the sample is drawn from culture camps, which emphasize race and ethnicity, this sample begins with some degree of racial attunement. As such, the continued presence of colorblindness among the sample indicates the deep rootedness of White hegemonic logic. However, the emergence of race consciousness indicates the potential for White transracially adoptive families to engage race critically. Moreover, the analyses draw a clear line between how parents articulate racial understandings in their interviews and the ways parents report talking about race and racism with their children. These findings are directly relevant to ongoing debates about the ethics of transracial adoption and racial identity development among transracial adoptees. More generally, these findings speak to the ways Whites’ racial understandings are constrained, but not determined, by a history and biography of privilege.

The convention for introducing biography in the Chinese textual tradition is to identify the subject not only by his name but also by his native place. The classic formula used for this purpose is set out in the preface to “The True Story of Ah Q,” in which Lu Xun remarks that “when writing biography, it is the usual practice to begin ‘so-and-so, from such-and-such place’ ” (Lu 1959 [1921]: 93). This formula was adopted in official documents, popular stories, obituaries and tomb epitaphs as well as in formal biographies or biographical notices. There were variations in its form, in which the person was identified as being “native of this place, living in that place” or “originally of this place, now of that place.” But in any event, a man was, and still is, normally identified by both his personal name and the name of his place of origin, just as a woman was usually identified by the names of her father and her husband. The problem for Lu Xun as fictional biographer was that Ah Q's name was a matter of debate and his place of origin unknown: He floated unmoored through Chinese society.

Prompted by the investigative journalist Gitta Sereny's biography Albert Speer: His Battle with Truth, two recent productions, Esther Vilar's Speer and David Edgar's Albert Speer, have set out to explore the reputation of Hitler's architect and later Minister of Armaments and War Production, Albert Speer, the only leading Nazi to acknowledge his guilt at the Nuremberg Trials. The plays, like the biography, are concerned with the extent of Speer's knowledge of the ‘Final Solution’ during his career in the Nazi hierarchy, and consequently with the integrity of the stance he adopted at Nuremberg and thereafter – that is, of his claim of guilt by association and omission rather than by active participation. In her biography, Sereny claims that as a result of her association with Speer he eventually acknowledged his guilt to her, and was repentant. But Nick White believes that the evidence – much of it unearthed by Sereny herself – suggests otherwise, and that Sereny had failed to acknowledge that between 1978 and his death in 1981 Speer consistently deceived her about crucial aspects of this evidence. How successful are Vilar and Edgar in their quite different dramatic sifting, not only of the public persona of Speer, but also of the interpretation granted their subject by the biographer upon whom their plays, to a lesser and greater degree, depend? Nick White has taught at City University, London, and his PhD dissertation, ‘In the Absence of Memory? Jewish Fate and Dramatic Representation: the Production and Critical Reception of Holocaust Drama on the London Stage, 1945–1989’ (1998) has been followed by a companion volume of criticism, articles, and letters, The Critical Reception of Holocaust Drama on the British Stage, 1939–2000.

The essay reflects on the “difficult journey” undertaken when the essay writer was tasked to write the life story of her adoptive brother, the late lieutenant-general Lothar Neethling (1935–2005). His life story is a remarkable one: the author’s parents adopted this German war orphan in 1948 in his early teens; he became an exceptionally well qualified scientist and at the age of 35 he became the head of the South African Police Force’s forensic laboratory. The laboratory was instrumental in solving many crime-related cases during the period of National Party rule. Towards the end of 1989 newspaper reports implicated Neethling personally as the source of poison used against African National Congress activists. Although he ultimately won his case of defamation on appeal against these newspapers he was not exonerated unconditionally. The biographer reflects on her approach in writing his biography, the difficulties of balancing kindred loyalty, personal and collegial affinities and her objective to portray the life of a complex human being.

A distinctive feature of the biographies of Suetonius is his methodical and detailed description of the physical appearances of the emperors. This feature was adopted by two fourth-century Latin writers, Ammianus Marcellinus and the anonymous author of the Historia Augusta. This study will explore how ancient theories of the relationship between appearance and character intersect with the physical descriptions of emperors the authors provide. These authors reveal themselves to be engaged with contemporary approaches to the question without being bound by any one theory, and thus presuppose a readership for whom physiognomic questions were both interesting and debatable. The approaches of the authors to this minor feature in their work also offer broader insight into their biographical style and purpose.

Any meaningful assessment of biography and autobiography writing among the Swahili as a historical source needs to take at least three factors into consideration. The first is the influence of Arab literary traditions on the emergence of the genre on the East African coast; the second is the relationship between literacy and orality, and its implication for writing and narration in an African context. The role of colonialism, and the introduction of the Western “mode” of biography and autobiography writing, forms the third factor. The aim of the paper is to survey these factors, not chronologically, but as part of a general discussion on the notion and status of the genre in the Swahili context.Swahili interface with Arabic as an essential ingredient of Islamic practice laid the foundation for the development of literate genres on the East African coast, among them the biographical and the historical. In the process, Swahili adopted styles of narrative expression which are reflected in the terms employed for them. The most common are habari (from the Arabic khabar) and wasifu (from wasf). In its original usage, khabar denoted a description of an event or events that were connected in a single narrative by means of a phrase such as “in that year.” It lacked a genealogy of narrators, and the form was stylistically flexible to include verses of poetry relevant to the events. In Swahili the current meaning of the word habari is “information” and “news” (and, hence, also a greeting) but, as a historical genre, it has been used in two ways. The first is in relation to the history of the city-states recounted through documents whose titles include the word, khabari/habari, (or the plural, akhbar in Arabic), usually translated as “chronicle(s).”

The main thesis of this article is that the concept of “bio/hagio/graphy” is the key to understanding the communication mechanisms of the narrative on historical figures regarded as national heroes and/or saints of the Catholic Church in the context of recent Polish history. The author of this text, perceiving biography as a set of narrative practices, notices that in “bio/hagio/graphy” these practices are subordinate to the hagiographic attitude towards the protagonist of the story adopted by the author of the work. This phenomenon is exemplified by the process of shaping bio/hagio/ graphic narrative about Stanisława Leszczyńska. Various stages of reconstructing the biography of the “midwife from Auschwitz” were distinguished, in which the biographical narrative evolved from autobiographical testimony through hagiographic practices of the religious community to the popular circulation of literature, not necessarily of confessional nature.

Using a term drawn from economic anthropology1 and pushing the boundaries of this type of analysis, I would like to describe an attempt to trace in time and space the roots of the technical, stylistic and iconographic know-how that gave form to Roman painting. Considering the fragmentary nature of the evidence at our disposal, the argumentation set forth here cannot follow a linear path containing various steps that can all be neatly demonstrated. I believe that the time is right, however, to tackle Roman painting — and particularly painting in the domestic setting — with more conviction. Although understanding the rôle and nature of the patrons and painters remains an objective that is still far off, it is probably worth investigating the traditions that enjoyed some level of continuity in Roman painting and the concrete ways and contexts in which the process unfolded. The aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of the rôle that this artistic technique played in a society that made ample use of it during a fundamental phase of its history. In the 1st c. B.C. and 1st c. A.D., in the brief period that saw the transition from Republic to Empire, the domestic ideology of Roman society found expression in a decorative system marked by a continuous stream of innovations with respect to themes, schemes and ornament that were adopted consistently by a broad spectrum of patrons. Indeed, beyond simply protecting and covering the walls of dwellings, figurative painting — especially of such a complex nature as we are dealing with here — added a wide range of elements which I believe it is useful to investigate.

Annotation:
Background/Context The current biographic understanding of John Dewey's experience adopting and raising an Italian boy named Sabino emphasizes the theme of finding an emotional replacement for Morris and Gordon, two young sons who had tragically died on family trips to Europe. Lacking is substantive attention to the fact that John Dewey's son had a physical disability who grew up during the early surge of eugenics thought in American popular life. The leading biographer Jay Martin has portrayed John and Alice Dewey as rescuing Sabino from poverty, an experience that gave John Dewey “a special empathy for the second-best, the second-class citizen, the loser in society. “ What is missing from all biographic research on the Deweys is their experience of raising a boy with a physical disability during a historical time when disabilities were highly stigmatized. Purpose/Objective/Research The purpose of this historical study is to supplement the current understanding of John Dewey fathering an adopted son with an account that attends to the fact that young Sabino had a physical disability. Working in the disability studies tradition, this analysis explores both how the Deweys contended with Sabino's bone tuberculosis as an illness requiring medical treatment and how they navigated the complex political context of deeply discriminatory attitudes surrounding disabled persons. The conclusion initiates a discussion of the larger questions concerning how the experiences of fathering a boy impacted directly by disability oppression might have influenced John Dewey's political activity and scholarship. Research Design This historical analysis utilizes prior biographic research, published and unpublished works by John Dewey, and primary historical documents such as family letters and medical and popular publications of the era. Conclusions/Recommendations This analysis finds that John and Alice Dewey were very loving and attentive parents who endured many struggles due to their child's disability. They worried about their son's health, and they capably navigated the available medical options. They were troubled by their son's suffering and pain, and they worked together with great consistency to comfort and support him. Further, they directly confronted disability prejudice, including educational segregation, and worked assiduously against the powerful cultural assumption that their disabled son should lead a life of anything less than full participation in the community. The article concludes with a preliminary examination of how these experiences influenced John Dewey's political writings and activities.

This article discusses those moments of Jonas Basanavičius’s biography that while being closely connected, in one way or another, with the cultural field of Central Europe also inspired directly Basanavičius’s life and work. When considering the role of Central Europe, one should take into account a very important moment of Basanavičius’ biography, i.e. the time when he lived in Bulgaria for twenty-five years, first in Lom Palanka and Elena, later in Varna. Although physically living in Bulgaria, he was culturally determined by and adopted historical existential experience of Central Europe, considered as a geopolitical zone of Habsburg imperial influence. This experience was clearly reflected in two spheres of Basanavičius’s life: in the national cultural work (historical cultural aspect) and in the medical practice (medical anthropological aspect). Visually speaking, he became a doctor by carefully dissecting Lithuanian history. He became a historian by insistently trying to awake the national memory and language. But if Basanavičius understood medical practice as the field of rational decisions and the application of empirical knowledge, the ancient history became for him the ground of unhindered philological improvisation.

The present essay delves into the details of the biography of Kateryna Borodina, the Ukrainian artist and member of Mykhailo Boychuk’s school of monumental painters. Due to Kateryna Borodina's untimely death, her biography has been distorted and filled with false facts, with Boychukists being blamed by supporters of socialist realism as representatives of formalistic art. The article reveals that Kateryna Borodina hailed from a noble family, and her father was a renowned railway engineer. Despite being an ethnic Russian, influenced by Mykhailo Boychuk and his creative circle, the artist began to identify herself as Ukrainian. This shift was evident in various questionnaires where she repeatedly stated her affiliation, and she also adopted the Ukrainian language in her everyday life. Archival materials cited in the article provide additional information about the artist’s biography, including new details about her student years and the poor state of her health, ultimately leading to her premature death. The article includes illustrations such as childhood photos of the artist and two drawings currently known to belong to her friend Oksana Pavlenko. Despite Kateryna Borodina’s participation in the Venice Biennale and widespread representation of her paintings at Ukrainian exhibitions in the late 1920s, only two of her works are known in Ukrainian museums today. The article introduces various documents shedding light on the artist’s life, including her student archival file. Other documents depict the peculiarities of the everyday life of Ukrainian artists in the 1920s. The appendices of the essay contain nine letters from Kateryna Borodina to Oksana Pavlenko and Sofia Nalepynska-Boychuk, supplemented with comments.

First, Junaid Sulaeman’s political Hijrah was conducted from Darul Islam toward Golongan Karya party. Second, the factors that drove Junaid Sulaeman’s participation in the political movement included the changing of socio-political context, the breadth and depth of his religious knowledge, the need to get Allah's guidance, and the consideration of dawah. Third, the implications of Junaid Sulaeman's political movement were known from the expansion of his local and national network, as well as the development of socio-religious institutions in Bone. The research concluded that a good cooperation between the ulama and the government could provide more benefits and blessings to the community.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) was the founder of the modern-day Turkish Republic. Although much has been published about his life, only one biography adopted a psychological/psychoanalytic perspective. The authors Vamık Volkan and Norman Itzkowitz argued that the main driving mechanism behind Atatürk’s behavior was his narcissistic personality organization. Their framework considered Mustafa’s birth, which occurred shortly after his elder brothers had passed away, and how his mother, presumably in a state of severe depression, could not provide adequate emotional care, which gave way to compensatory narcissistic tendencies in the child. For several decades, the hypothesis has remained unchallenged, and no serious review has yet been carried out. In this article, I argue that Mustafa Kemal was a highly intelligent and gifted child based on his well-developed verbal skills and his record as a high achiever at school. While considering the impact of adverse events in early childhood on cognitive development and personality, a review of historical texts revealed that his elder brothers died in 1883—not before Mustafa’s birth, as the authors had believed. Thus, no serious event appears to have taken place in his early years when rapid brain development is thought to occur. Since the central premise has lost its integrity to support the biography, Volkan and Itzkowitz’s hypothesis can no longer be regarded as tenable and viable.

Biographers omit or reduce childhood for cultural reasons, based on the adopted convention, because of their own convictions, or simply due to the lack of sources. The author challenges all these reasons, arguing for the importance of childhood as a phase of human life.

This case study explores how a general lighting device transformed into a distinctive Jewish ritual object, the Havdalah candle. In late antiquity, the ubiquitous oil lamp served for the fire-light blessing during the end-of-Sabbath Havdalah ritual but in the fourth century, a sage added a torch, avukah, aggrandizing the ceremonial light. Jews showed little concern for the lighting utensil until the late Middle Ages, when a variety of contemporary torch-candles employed in Church ritual and among Christian aristocracy inspired new rabbinic interpretations of the term avukah. Ashkenazi Jews favored a costly Gothic-style implement with intertwined tapers, which particularly suited the words of the ancient Havdalah blessing. This became a distinctively Ashkenazi Jewish ritual object in the sixteenth century, after Christians abandoned the old-fashioned style of torch-candle. Following the drop in cost of wax, and massive Jewish migrations in modern times, all observant Jews adopted the Ashkenazi intertwined candle.

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the role of the life story in three cases of internationally adopted children in promoting resilient outcomes among these children. Methodology: The pediatric adoption clinic in the department of pediatrics in a tertiary care center facilitates the adoption of children from Government Run Child Care Institutes. The qualitative narrative methodology was used to explore how international adoptive families navigate the adoption process to improve and enhance the probability of optimal adoption outcomes. Descriptions of the qualitative interviews and discussions regarding the families’ experiences and struggles of procuring information and personal stories of the adopting children from India are presented. Verbal consent was taken from all the parents. Results: The Indian Adoption Regulations of 2017 allows for documentation and permission for sharing memory albums and interests of the child with the adoptive families. However, there are instances where the child care institutes do not maintain any records and have little to share with the families leading to feelings of grief and loss postadoption among internationally adopted children. The three families interviewed expressed a desire to maintain an association with the child’s culture and sought guidance on how they could help their adoptive children develop an ethnic identity that supports their psychological well-being. Maintaining records and chronicling the child’s biographic preadoption history is one way to help children to understand their personal stories and develop a stable identity. Conclusions: Adoption agencies and associated professionals should encourage and facilitate all activities that enhance attachment and creates emotional bonds between adoptive parents and the adoptees.

The article argues that the Policy Framework needs to engage more vigorously with decolonisation as one of the most pertinent issues affecting higher education in South Africa today. It offers perspectives on what shifting the geography and biography of knowledge means in the context of the Policy Framework, thus opening up the possibility of moving South Africa from being primarily a receiver to a creator of internationalisation knowledge and practice.

The experience linked to the COVID-19 emergency constituted a turning point in the biography of most Italians. The suspension of usual activities, the redefinition of life contexts and the restriction of relationships have opened up wide spaces and time for thinking and reflecting on oneself, which may have triggered processes of redefinition of personal identity. The general aim of this study was to explore the impact of pandemic on daily life in the life span, in order to support the hypothesis that the pandemic experience could be considered a disequilibrating life-event and a turning point in the biography of most Italians. A mixed research approach was adopted, with 14 closed and open questions created ad hoc. 41 participants (87% women, average age 40.71), resident in the Campania region, in southern Italy, responded to the online written interview. The data were analyzed by two independent coders, using categorical content analysis with a top-down approach. Membership of the different age groups (young adults, adults, elderly) was assessed as a comparison variable. Findings qualify pandemic-related experiences as a disequilibrating life event, potentially capable of activating, alongside emotionally dense experiences, adaptive and functional resources for identity reconsideration, with differences being age based. The dimensions of change, the affective dimensions, the resources and the areas of risk identified, allowed us to identify three different clusters, showing a differentiation according to age groups, which identifies young adults and the elderly as the subjects most at risk.

Annotation:
In Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (1774), a piece of life writing constitutes one of the founding documents of modern German literature. The tragic story of the young bohemian Werther and his beloved Charlotte is partly based on the life and suicide of Goethe's friend Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, but is also infused with passages from Goethe's own letters and inspired by his unrequited love for Charlotte Buff. Validating Paul De Man's assertion that autobiography is not necessarily a genre or a type of writing, but rather a way of approaching and interpreting literature, Goethe's Werther can equally be read as biography, autobiography or as a work of fiction. Despite the fact that the novel sets the scene for the intricate interplay of life and literature that became a distinguishing mark of European Romanticism, the particular significance of life writing for German literature and thought is obvious if one considers the role of biography for German Historism in the tradition of Leopold Ranke and Gustav Droysen, of autobiographical writing from Goethe's Dichtung und Wahrheit (1811-1833) to Ruth Klüger's Weiter leben (1992), or of auto/biographical tropes in fictional genres like the Bildungsroman. This makes it all the more surprising that no comprehensive study has yet been devoted to the role of life writing within the German context. Even the term ‘life writing,’ bridging the gap between different genres and media, has only recently and somewhat reluctantly been adopted in German-language scholarship. A recent collection of essays, edited by Katja Herges and Elisabeth Krimmer, entitled Contested Selves: Life Writing and German Culture has set itself to remedy this shortcoming.

This paper is designed to discuss the significant place of biography in the work of literature. This is an area that has been less explored by researchers in literary history and this poses great danger for historical scholarship and literature at the wider context. It is fair to say that the future of any community is determined and measured by the attention it pays to her historical personages, because the future nestles comfortably in the past. Therefore, this paper focuses on the biography of Shaykh al- Fazazi al-andalusi. The study adopted historical descriptive method. In the dim twilight of history, al- Fazazi was born and flourished in the political and intellectual scene of the Muslim Spain in the 13th century, spent his utmost strength and skill holding life cheap in support of a cause so high and placing without reserve his chivalry, prowess, wit, and learning. In the light of this importance, a reflection on the life and works of al- Fazazi is necessary. The paper argues that al- Fazazi straddles a fine path of faithful Muslim, and demonstrates artful arrangement in his poetic works. He employed a number of Arabic metaphors that are connected with political traditions, Islamic context, and general cultural experience. The use of epenthetic vowel, phonological component of grammar and the uniformity between edges of prosodic and morphological constituents are model of elegant style. The paper concludes that al- Fazazi, is one of the famous literary figures of his era who brazes the trail of new development in Arabic literature of his era and outstanding littérateur to be reckoned with in all ages.

ABSTRACTIn this study, we identify the dominant storylines that were embedded in the narratives of younger people with dementia and their nominated family members. By implementing a longitudinal, narrative design underpinned by biographical methods we generated detailed family biographies with five families during repeated and planned research contacts (N=126) over a 12–15-month period between 2009 and 2010. The application of narrative analysis within and between each family biography resulted in the emergence of five family storyline types that were identified as: agreeing; colluding; conflicting; fabricating; and protecting. Whilst families were likely to use each of these storylines at different points and at different times in their exposure to young onset dementia, it was found that families that adopted a predominantly ‘agreeing’ storyline were more likely to find ways of positively overcoming challenges in their everyday lives. In contrast, families who adopted predominantly ‘conflicting’ and ‘colluding’ storylines were more likely to require help to understand family positions and promote change. The findings suggest that the identification of the most dominant and frequently occurring storylines used by families may help to further understand family experience in young onset dementia and assist in planning supportive services.

Over the past few years we have encouraged the simmering in these pages of a continuing debate about the relationship between the bibliographical and scholarly problems of editing Elizabethan texts, changing perceptions of ‘authority’, and the theatrical and political conceptions, old and new, which may affect all these. Brian Parker, in NTQ24 (1990), and Stanley Wells, in NTQ26 (1991), were early contributors, and in NTQ34 (1992) Graham Holderness and Bryan Loughrey took up the argument, specifically questioning the editorial principles of the recent Oxford Shakespeare. Here, Alan Posener takes up the debate, criticizing the methodology and terminology adopted by Holderness and Loughrey, and some of the conclusions to which these led. Alan Posener is a British expatriate living in Berlin who – after stints in radical left-wing politics and teaching – became a writer, specializing in popular biography. He is currently rewriting one of the standard German biographies of William Shakespeare.

This study discusses the religious identity and organizational patterns of a community of baalei teshuvah as a unique form of new religious movement. Findings over time show that community members originally took steps to integrate and merge with the dominant group of ultra-Orthodox in Israel (the Haredim), later adopted a sectarian pattern, then moved toward an alternative way of religious life, in time even challenging and criticizing the dominant Haredi stream. An additional objective of the study was to identify the sources and mechanisms of organizational and identity changes experienced by this community. The empirical analysis reveals that these changes were influenced by universal, local, national, and personal factors, such as the leaders’ worldview and biography. In light of these findings, we claim that when analyzing new religious movements, researchers must integrate and synthesize several aspects: structure and agency, macro and micro, and intentionality and contingency.

Summary Augustine of Hippo was one of the most influential church father in Western Christianity. However, little attention has been paid Augustine’s significance for China in the early history of Sino-Western theological and cultural dialogue. This article aims to fill this gap by providing a historical and documentary study of the reception of Augustine in China, with particular focus on the issue of how the story of Augustine was introduced into China and how Augustinian studies was developed as an independent discipline at the present stage of Chinese theological studies. Examining the newly discovered Chinese biographies of Augustine, the first section explores the early introduction of the story of Augustine during the Ming and Qing Empires, identifying the Catholic and the Protestant approaches to the translation of Augustine’s biography. The second section addresses Augustinian studies in the Minguo period (1912–1949) and analyses various approaches to the study of St. Augustine. The third section proceeds to the stage of the establishment of the new China (PRC), with a careful survey of Augustinian studies after the Cultural Revolution (1976–present). In particular, the new exploration by Chinese Augustinian scholars over the last five years will be highlighted. Based on the above observations, the article concludes with the evaluation that the biography of St. Augustine was adopted by the early Jesuits as an additional advantage for propagating the Christian faith in the Chinese context, in which the policy of cultural accommodation (initiated by Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci) had proved a useful approach for theological contextualization and would continue to serve as a resourceful strategy in the Chinese approach to Augustinian theology as well as an effective method for deepening the Sino-Western theological dialogue.

This article examines A Human Being Died that Night: A Story of Forgiveness by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela and Red Ink by Angela Makholwa, which are, respectively, auto/biographical and fictional narrative representations of the contemporary South African prison. Both narratives foreground gender because their female authors consciously posit their own femininity, in the case of Gobodo-Madikizela, and of her protagonist, in the case of Makholwa, as significant to the prison they portray. Although the way non-fiction and fiction operate cannot be conflated, Makholwa’s novel seems to mirror the structure of Gobodo-Madikizela’s auto/biography in obvious ways; an observation that helps justify why I analytically compare these narratives in this article. Most apartheid prison narratives, by authors of all genders, largely adopted an unambiguously political frame in articulating the subject positions of characters. The personal was deliberately subsumed in what appeared to be an urgent political need to dismantle the oppressive apartheid system. By contrast, there is a clear shift to the individualization of the prisoner at the expense of politicized collectivity in the selected narratives. However, my reading seeks to demonstrate that the ostensibly apolitical stance adopted by Makholwa and the personal and psychological approach taken by Gobodo-Madikizela are in fact deeply political and community-engaged processes.

In this article Pamela Davidson identifies a range of literary strategies that evolved in response to the disparity between the high standard of moral purity, which was a prerequisite for the Hebrew prophet, and the much laxer moral standards of Russian writers who adopted this role model. Strategies designed to reinforce the moral credentials of Aleksandr Pushkin, commonly regarded as the prototype of the poet-prophet, include the substitution of artistic for moral integrity (Nikolai Gogol'), the treatment of literary accounts of purification as evidence of the writer's moral standing (readings of “The Prophet”), the cult of martyrdom as an aspect of the writer's biography, derived from his suffering in life (Mikhail Lermontov) and extended to the interpretation of his death (Vladimir Solov'ev). Although these strategies enabled such later writers as Fedor Dostoevskii to assume the role of prophet, the blurring of the moral dimension of the prophetic ideal had long-term consequences for the development of Russian society and culture.

The article attempts a literary analysis of certain aspects of texts that belong to the so-called geoliterature, here referred to as “literary city guides”. The author analyzes three different texts, corresponding to three descriptive strategies adopted in the books. The first, Praga z Hrabalem [Prague with Hrabal] by Tomaˇs Mazal, represents the “creator’s perspective”, and it deploys a guidebook narrative to tell a biography of an author. Next guidebook, Dublin z Ulissesem [Dublin with Ulysses] by Piotr Paziński, concentrates on a specific literary work and invites the reader to explore it with the help of special scenarios. The third, Mariusz Szczygieł’s Osobisty przewodnik po Pradze [A Personal Guide to Prague], is an “authorial guide” which presents a unique personal perspective on the city. Summing up the analysis of guide strategies, the author of the article signals the possibility of looking at guide-related practices as a kind of model for literary studies.

Kitcher's view of mathematical practice is then adopted to examine the philosophical conceptions and epistemological style of Janiszewski in relation to the construction of the formal axiomatic system of knowledge about the continua. Finally, it is shown the convenience of differentiating in Kitcher's approach, the methods, procedures, techniques and strategies of practice, and the aesthetic values of mathematics. Abstract The taqārīẓ were part of an established system of academic recognition and the ʿulamāʾ patronage networks and at times, they could also be a powerful satirical weapon used by the learned elite members to denigrate and exclude a colleague. The large collection of the satire taqārīẓ written for the panegyric Biography composed in 819/1416 by Šams al-Dīn Muḥammad b. Nāhiḍ for the Mamluk sultan al-Muʾayyad Šayḫ is explored in this article as a supplementary source to the historical narratives for the study of the ʿulamāʾ milieu during the strained period of the transition from Turkish to Circassian sultanate (784/1382). Placing these taqārīẓ in the context of the increasing social insecurity entailed by the political reshuffles, reveals the growing anxiety of the incumbent learned elites over their positions and status in the administration of justice, the academe (madāris) and the waqf institution—the spheres where they exercised their hegemony of knowledge and religious power—and the strategies they adopted for their social survival.

The unique nature of Konopnicka’s work, as well as reductionist attempts to approach her biography, led the authors of this study to find a bridge connecting her life and work with the Gospel message from which she drew inspiration in the category of somatic sympathy. The philosophical category of somatic sympathy (symphysis) has been adopted on theological grounds, and its depth and universal character make it also transferable to literary studies, such as somatopoetics. This article proves that the category of somatic sympathy can be fully understood through the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth, and that it is one of the characteristics of Maria Konopnicka’s literary works.

This research deals with a very important subject: the ability of AlBukhari to preserve the harmony between the science of history and the science of Hadith in his book AlTarikh AlKabir “The Grand History”. In addition to explaining the nature of criteria of Hadith collection adopted by AlBukhari in the mentioned book. For example, AlBukhari used to incorporate in each biography one chain of narration to refer through it or through the Matn (text) to the narrator. He may mention one chain of narration which is the most common. Sometimes he may use a group of chains of narration. He may increase them to reach ten which is very few in his book. Using such Hadith approach by AlBukhari has certain objectives: some are related to the biography of the narrator, others related to the persons mentioned in the chain of narration, and others related to the text, using relevant terminology etc. AlBukhari didn’t only report the chain of narration without knowledge. He was a critique in most cases and gives his opinion. Sometimes he says, “the chain of narration isn’t acceptable” or “not strong”, or “there is something wrong with the chain of narration”. AlBukhari may have doubt about the authenticity and correctness of the narration, or may have a doubt about the Shaikh’s meeting the student. Sometimes, he says “I do not know of he heard from Abi Al Zinad or not “. This means that Al Bukhari as a Hadith scholar used his incredible skills to add a lot to the science of history, through the process of criticism, assessment, analysis of content of texts and the scrutiny of chains of narration. Such basics transfer History from its general narrative context to an established science. The aim of this research is to clarify the scientific approach of AlBukari, with regards to texts he used in his book, AlTarikh AlKabir “The Grand History”. Sometimes he used to use the text in full, sometimes in parts, and then he repeats it with same chain of narration or with another chain, or uses many chains of narrations, and may only refer to the text, saying:(Thus, meaning, so forth, so on…). Also, we aim to show the scientific approach of AlBukhari in mentioning the names of Shaikhs from whom the Hadith narrated, saying “It was heard from, from, it was heard, heard from”. Also, mentioning the names of narrators, saying “It was heard from him, it was narrated from him, from him”. In addition to that AlBukhari used a group of words on amendment and documentation when mentioning the biography of narrators, such as saying “Trustworthy, his Hadith is well known, sincere”.

The aim of the study was to find the birthplace of Elena Ivanovna (Dmitrievna) Dyakonova, known to the whole world under the name of Gala Dali. Documented sources about the woman’s city of birth have not been found so far, which led to the emergence of conflicting information. To achieve this goal, the author is looking for indirect documents confirming that Gala Dali was born in Kazan. For the first time, the problem is investigated based on archival data of her parents ‒ father Dmitry Ilyich Gomberg, who studied at the Imperial Kazan University from 1892 to 1895, and mother Antonina Petrovna Dyakonova. Analysis of documents found in the State Archives of the Republic of Tatarstan, articles by D. V. Malinovsky, grandson of the adopted son of D. I. Gomberg, memoirs and historical data helped to clarify the situation about the place of birth of the muse Dali and the plight of her family. The key research method is source study analysis of office documents, their comparison with historical data about everyday life and facts from the biography of Gala Dali. As a result of the research search, the place of birth of Elena Ivanovna/Dmitrievna Dyakonova was determined ‒ the city of Kazan, as evidenced by direct and indirect facts from the biographies of the parents and Gala herself, as well as the difficult life situation of the woman’s parents, their connection with revolutionary activities and mentioning in police circulars. This explains the reason why the woman did not like to remember the story of her birth and created numerous myths about the city of birth, family and living conditions. The article is devoted to the circumstances of Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s use of the pseudonym «Daniil Meingard» and the role played by Mykhailo Kovalynskyi in Skovoroda’s adoption of this pseudonym. The article reconstructs the biography of Pastor Daniel Mingard, whose name was adopted by Skovoroda, including refuted false information about him, widespread in Ukrainian-language literature; a brief description of the intellectual biography of his son, Pastor Gabriel Mingard, who, unlike his father, was a notable figure in the intel- lectual life of the country of Vaud in the second half of the 18th century, in particular, one of the most original authors of the «Encyclopedia of Yverdon» — a liberal Protestant response to the «Encyclopedia» of Diderot and d’Alembert. The article states that the description of Daniel Mingard, which Kovalynskyi gives in «The Life of Grigory Skovoroda» in order to explain the origin of the pseudonym Skovo- roda, corresponds more to Gabriel than to Daniel Mingard. The explanation of this ambiguity is based on the hypothesis that Kovalynskyi, choosing Gabriel Mingard as an example to follow, projects the Mingard son-father relationship onto his relationship with Skovoroda. This hypothesis gives reason to reconsider the role of Kovalynskyi in the life of Skovoroda and in the formation of the image of the philosopher in «The Life of Grigory Skovoroda». The article reconstructs Kovalynskyi’s circle of reading and demonstrates that his literary preferences correspond to the leading trends of reception by Russian Freemasonry in the last third of the 18th century. Western, primarily liberal Protestant literature. This recon- struction gives reason to draw a parallel between Skovoroda’s opinion and Kovalynskyi’s reading circle, in the context of which the latter evaluates Skovoroda’s life and philosophy; they are related by devotion to religious and intellectual freedom, eclecticism, as well as numerous subjects that we consider purely Skovoroda’s subjects: self-knowledge, the inner man, the goodness of God, happiness, friendship, etc.

Przyczynek do biografii [The secret police and Lech Wałęsa. Addendum to a biography]. The paper uses the methodology of interpretative research which emphasizes the role of meaning for the social and political construction of reality. Inspired by the theoretical and methodological proposals of discourse analysis it examines the mechanisms used to reconstruct Lech Wałęsa’s charismatic identity in response to a book that undermines his social image. These attempts also involve the construction of individual identity, in the case under analysis, the identity of historians and authors of the book who are responsible for undermining this image. Therefore, the paper also attempts to analyze media representations of S. Cenckiewicz and P. Gontarczyk. Attention is primarily focused on the key actors, on the features attributed to them and related argumentative strategies understood as a more or less intentional plan of discursive practices adopted in order to achieve defined social, political, linguistic or psychological purposes.

The aim of the article is to present the issue of reception of Ugo Foscolo’s works in Poland. A particular attention is paid to the multipart article in Kłosy from 1872 (No. 374–386) devoted to the Italian artist in connection with the transfer of the poet’s remains – many years after his death in England in 1827 – to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence in 1871. The paper discusses the strategies adopted in the description of elements of the poet’s biography, including a sentimental key related to the figure of Quirina Mocenni Magiotti, an economic key and a moralizing key. Emphasizing the experience of emigration and compulsory uprooting of the Italian poet from the family land places this special periodical return from beyond the grave in a new context determined by the situation in Poland and the resulting condition of artists forced to emigrate. The analysis also involves unique Polish translations of three of the most important Foscol’s sonnets (*** [Solcata ho fronte]; “In morte del fratello Giovanni”; “A Zacinto”) included within the frame of the article in Kłosy.

This essay reflects on the writing of lives and fictions in a South African context in light of the contents of this special issue, and draws parallels with some of the approaches adopted by the contributors. It discusses biography, autobiography, diaries, letters, and testimonies by or about Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela, Eugene Marais, Njube son of Lobengula, Cecil Rhodes, and Olive Schreiner, and problematizes some of the key terms in thinking about postcolonial literatures. In doing so, it explores interconnections between the factual and the fictive in different forms of life writing, the expanded boundaries of biographizing, performances, and transformations of the self, the use of fictions to tell truths, issues with representation and referentiality, the appeal of a return to “the facts” in some circumstances, the position of readers, and how the relationship between “then” and “now” informs writing practices. The conclusion draws on Olive Schreiner’s literary credo to propose that an alliance between writers and readers should be part of reconfiguring the biographical impulse in postcolonial literatures.

Annotation:
The fin de siecle was a transformative period for gender identity in Austro-Germany. As women gained more social and sexual independence, many men began to suffer a crisis of masculinity. Gustav Mahler was no exception. Issues of gender identity, sex, and masculinity are woven into the composer’s biography. Mahler’s relationship with masculinity is further complicated when contextualized within his Jewish heritage. Otto Weininger’s Sex and Character of 1903 chided Jewish men for their inherent femininity and added a new, gendered dimension to antisemitic criticism. Attempting to escape this presumed Jewish effeminacy, Mahler became celibate and adopted a lifestyle that mirrored the values of the Körperkultur movement which promoted pure, Christian masculinity to counter the rise of the new, sexually liberated Viennese woman. Musically, Mahler looked to works such as Wagner’s Parsifal, which acted as a gendered religious parable for the triumph of chaste masculinity over the inherent corruption and degeneracy of women. Gustav Mahler therefore becomes a privileged space for the examination of gendered Jewishness in the rapidly changing landscape of fin-de-siècle Vienna.

The article presents an analysis of the “Life” of Mrs. Dorothy Lawson made by her chaplain, Jesuit William Palmes in the mid–17th c. (1646–1650). The “Life” of Mrs. Lawson was intended for the women of the English Catholic community, nuns and lay-women. The text revealed a post–Trident model of religious life adopted for the realities of the life of Catholics in England. It is shown that to describe the devotional practices of Dorothy Law-son, her biographer had to picture the actions of women that set them on collision course with secular and ecclesiastical authorities, and also contradicted the accepted gender stereotypes. The article is followed by a Russian translation of the “Life”, with commentaries.

The main purpose of this study is to establish the relationship between Gestalt-therapy and Zen-Buddhism universes, based on a conceptual analysis for contributing to Gestalt-therapy theoretical development. Gestalt model has been adopted as investigation methodology using the creation and destruction figures (gestalten). Initially it was determined Perls as the start up reference or initial figure, due to his interest in Zen-Buddhism. The analysis of his collected works and auto-biography has defined his contact with Buddhism and, as consequence, its reverberation in Gestalt-therapy creation. Within Gestalt-therapy theoretical content, some concepts are related to Zen and others illustrate a close interaction, as the awareness flow/continuum awareness and meditation. Both Gestalt-therapy and Zen-Buddhism have been investigated on the human being conceptual analysis perspective, as well as “self”, ‘I’, ‘here and now’, temporality, addressing their similarities and differences. Situations captured from Gestalt-Therapy clinical practice, stories and Zen-Buddhism ‘mondos’ have contributed for the understanding of concepts presented in this study. This relationship establishment has allowed the identification of main articulation structures between Gestalt-therapy and Zen-Buddhism, pointing out the fundamental topics that differentiate their identities

The incident of Gharānīq is one of the most debated topics in the biography of the Holy Prophet, and there is a difference of opinion among the commentators as to its validity. The first narrators of this incident are Ibn Sa'ad and Allāma Ibn e Jarīr Tabrī. Later, many commentators of the Holy Qur’ān and biographers of the Holy Prophet narrated this incident. A group of scholars, while acknowledging the reality of the incident, have offered justifications in this regard. The justification adopted by the majority of earlier and modern scholars is that the praising words for gods were uttered by the devil and not by the Holy Prophet, but the Orientalists have tried to prove that Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) tried to get close to the polytheists of Makkah. In this article, it will be discussed that the majority of scholars have termed this incident as fabricated on the basis of rational and traditional evidence. Many contemporary biographers, such as Allāma Shiblī Naumanī, Muhammad Hussaīn Hekal and Dr. Muhammad Hamidullāh, have given reasoned answers to the objections of Orientalists regarding this incident. This incident contradicts the basic teachings of Islam and the infallibility of prophethood.

Annotation:
My article argues for reading the novel as political allegory. America's efforts in the early and mid-nineteenth century are represented by Robert Acton trying to compete with a “European family” for international colonizing privileges. A blend of British and French empire can be seen in the person of Eugenia, the Baroness Munster – originally American by birth, who has, though her years as European nobility, adopted the policy of expansionism. To fully understand James's caustic comment on imperialistic ventures – most notably as he pits the pernicious nature of European exploits against the more humanistic pursuit of art for art's sake – we can read Eugenia's brother, Felix, as a proponent of aestheticism, committed to seeking beauty in all life pursuits. In sum, I suggest that the novel need not be dismissed (as it largely has been for so many decades) as a simplistic, insignificant part of James's oeuvre. I use historical research, literary analyses of other scholars, statements made by James in his letters, and critical statements by James in such commentaries as his biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne in order to support my views. Of course, I use the primary text, The Europeans, for much of my support.

This article is focused on the use of photography to characterize land-cover and land-use changes in a 7.59 km2 study area centered on Hotel do Garbe, in the village of Armação de Pêra, Algarve, Portugal. Orthorectified vertical aerial, oblique aerial and ground-level photographs were the main data sources required to carry out the analysis. In a preliminary approach, a conventional research design was adopted. Based on the available orthorectified vertical aerial photographs, a sixty-year time series, with four homogeneously distributed steps (1958, 1978, 1997 and 2018), was constructed, and maps were produced to support the description of the changes that have taken place. To deepen the analysis, photographs from fourteen picture postcards were recognized as a useful source of information, and the authors of these photographs were considered “involuntary or accidental photo-geographers” whose work was relevant to feed a case study in which human geography and landscape biography sciences are the main narrative axes. The final result proved to be richer than the interpretation only based on the orthorectified vertical aerial photographs, and the importance of combining photographs taken from different points of view, with different aims and for different recipients is highlighted.

After its occupation of Arab territory, the Zionist movement sought to destroy every Arab aspect. It has also attempted to erase, falsify and rewrite history in a manner consistent with its aspirations and goals in addition to obliterating the Palestinian and Arab identity. This movement has recruited Hebrew Literature to serve its Zionist purposes and to achieve its goals. This study came to highlight one of these Zionist theses, which claims that the origins of majority of Palestinian peasants and some tribes in eastern Jordan belong to a Jewish origin, and that they were forced to convert to Islam. The Israeli writer Rachel Yinnait Ben-Zvi has adopted this proposition in many of her writings, including her story "Bedouins of Jewish Origin". In its first part, the present study addresses the Zionist claims about the origin of the Palestinian farmers as well as the Bedul and Liathneh tribes. As for the second part, it is devoted to the study of Rachel Yannait’s biography, the content of her story, as well as its translation into Arabic. The researcher concluded his study with a presentation of the most important results of the study.

One of the characteristics of Islamic civilization is that it fulfilled the requirements of spirit and substance including the requirements of faith and knowledge and balanced them in an equitable manner. This feature gave rise to the fact that many Islamic scholars have emerged in various countries of the Islamic world throughout the ages, enjoying expertise over traditional as well rational sciences equally. They had devoted their potentials to, and became experts in various disciplines such as medicine, engineering, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, and physics. It can be corroborated by the information available in the books of biography. So doing, they proved for the entire world that Islam is the religion of civilization, knowledge, revival, development, and prosperity and not the religion of backwardness and extremism as asserted by many peoples. A great number of Hadith experts have emerged in Indian subcontinent enjoying equal grasp over traditional and rational sciences and they occupied highest places by contributing distinguished services in form of books/articles writing and teaching to a great number of disciples. This article sheds lights on the lives of such scholars highlighting their academic works with reference to their eminent contributions in rational and traditional sciences. The author adopted hybrid methodology; namely the inductive method and the descriptive one. The inductive method is employed for tracing and gathering information concerning the Hadith scholars in the biographical and history books while descriptive method has been adopted for unfolding their distinctive works in the fields of rational as well as traditional sciences. The article ends with concluding remarks.
