Because of recent failures in the past, the role of Board and the Board monitoring have become important. The directors are expected to be more accountable. In this study, the researcher tries to investigate the relationship between the level of board activity and firm value for firms in FMCG sector over a three-year period from 2010–2011 to 2012–2013. The primary aim of the article is to provide empirical evidence and specifically find out the impact of board activity measured by number of meetings and its impact on firm performance. The results indicate that the attendance in board meetings is significantly positively correlated with ROA. The OLS results with both the performance measures show that the point estimates of attendance at board meetings were significant indicating that attendance in such meetings is perceived to be an indicator of good monitoring activities of the board.

Annotation:
Advocates of quality daily physical education for prepubescent children frequently encounter the argument that such initiatives will harm academic progress. The impact of daily physical education upon the academic performance of primary school students is thus reviewed with particular reference to studies conducted in Vanves (France), Australia, and Trois Rivières (Québec). When a substantial proportion of curricular time (14–26%) is allocated to physical activity, learning seems to proceed more rapidly per unit of classroom time, so that academic performance matches, and may even exceed, that of control students. Children receiving additional physical education show an acceleration of their psychomotor development, and this could provide a mechanism for accelerated learning of academic skills. Other potential mechanisms include increased cerebral blood flow, greater arousal, changes in hormone levels, enhanced nutrient intake, changes in body build, and increased self esteem. Academic teachers may also favor the enhanced physical education program, creating “halo” effects, and the resulting release time may enhance their academic teaching. Irrespective of mechanisms, the implication for public policy is that daily required physical education can be introduced when a child enters primary school without compromising academic development. Given the importance of establishing positive health habits from an early age, school boards should be encouraged to follow a policy of required daily physical activity in primary schools. Evidence of specific benefit in students with learning disabilities remains less convincing.

The role of SMEs in Indonesia in supporting the economy in Indonesia is quite significant. In the post-1997 crisis in Indonesia, SMEs can prove that this sector could become the foundation for the national economy. Number of SMEs also continued to increase from year to year. SMEs in developing countries is almost always the biggest economic activity in number and ability to absorb labor. Development of SMEs as one of supporting economic growth must be accompanied by the development of human resources in various aspects. HR competency development of SMEs important in order to create a quality workforce to reach corporate goals. The current study focused on SMEs Batik in Banyumas, was to examine the impact of human resource competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) on company’s performance in SME Batik Banyumas. Research conducted on 65 respondents in Banyumas showed that HR competencies affect the performance of SMEs. Skills have significant effect on the performance of SMEs. However, knowledge and abilities does not effect the performance of SMEs. The owners of SMEs Batik should pay attention to the importance of human resource competencies to improve their performance. It is also important to improve their skills through training and workshops related to batik. Owners of batik needs to involve employees in their knowledge and skills in the production process of batik that can help increase employee and company performance in the future.

Physical activity (PA) may improve brain development, cognition, concentration and academic performance. In this prospective controlled intervention study, we increased the level of PA in 338 children aged 6–8 years at study start, from the Swedish standard of 60 min per week to 200 min per week (40 min daily). The intervention continued in all nine compulsory school years until the students graduated between 2007–2012. All other 689,881 Swedish children who graduated the same years were included as a control group. We registered at graduation eligibility rate for upper secondary school and the final grade score (from 0 to 320 grade points). We also registered the same end points in the 295 students in the index school and in all other 471,926 Swedish students who graduated in 2003–2006, that is, those who graduated before the intervention study started. Before the intervention, academic performance was similar among children in the index school as for all other Swedish boys and girls. With the intervention, the eligibility rate increased for boys in the index school by 7.3 percentage points and the mean grade scores by 13.3 points. This should be compared with a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in eligibility rate and an increase by 2.7 points in grade score in other Swedish boys. No changes were seen for intervention girls, neither in eligibility rates or grade scores. By introducing daily school-based PA in compulsory school, more boys would probably reach the eligibility rate for higher education.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a new measure of portfolio activity, the modified turnover (MT), which represents the portion of the portfolio that the manager changes from one quarter to the next. Compared with the traditional turnover, the MT measure has a distinct interpretation, relies on portfolio holdings, includes the effects of flows and ignores the effects of offsetting trades. Design/methodology/approach Using quarterly holdings data, the authors examine the relationship between fund turnover, performance, and flows for a sample of 2,856 actively managed mutual funds over the period 1991-2012. The authors provide numerical examples to illustrate how the suggested measure, MT, is different from the traditional turnover measure. The authors use panel regressions, simple and double sorts to examine the predictability of performance. Findings The authors find evidence that high MT predicts lower performance. The comparison between the highest and lowest quintiles sorted based on MT reveals a difference of −2.41 percent in the annual risk-adjusted return. Furthermore, high MT predicts lower net flows. The authors also find that MT relates positively to other activeness measures while volatility, flows, size, number of stocks, and the expense ratio are significant determinants of MT. Overall, the results suggest that frequent churning of a portfolio is value destroying for investors and signals a manager’s lack of skill. Originality/value The authors offer a simple measure, namely, MT, for estimating the fraction of a portfolio that changes from one quarter to the next. Armed with this tool, the authors investigate whether funds deviate from their previous quarter’s holdings because of valuable or noisy information, and whether such signals are exploited by fund investors.

In this research, we have empirically tested the impact of Entrepreneurial Framework Conditions (EFC) on entrepreneurial activity and ultimately on economic growth of a nation. In our sample all the 54 countries participating in the GEM study in 2017 are taken. 67.8% of the world’s population and 86.0% of the world’s GDP is represented by the economies included in GEM 2017. The entrepreneurial ecosystem is captured through 12 EFCs used in the GEM model that includes: Financial environment, government policy of support and relevance, government policy of taxes and bureaucracy, government programs, entrepreneurial education at school stage and post school stage, R&D transfer, commercial and legal infrastructure, internal market dynamics, access to physical infrastructure, and social and cultural norms. The impact of these EFCs and their significance in creating entrepreneurial activity (TEA) in a nation is analyzed using OLS estimation technique with TEA as dependent variable. Secondly, the impact of entrepreneurial activity (TEA) on economic growth ( ∆GDP) is estimated using OLS regression model with control variables such as global competitiveness index (GCI) and Gross national income per capita, expressed in purchasing power parity (GNIC). The results suggest that entrepreneurship education at post school stage, entry burdens and cultural and social norms are significant framework conditions that support entrepreneurial activity, while R&D transfer, internal market dynamics and commercial and legal infrastructure hinders the process of entrepreneurship. Furthermore, TEA is significantly contributing to the economic growth of factor driven and efficiency driven economies.
