Coyer, Fiona Maree. „The Development of Family-Focused Intensive Care Nursing Through Action Research“. Queensland University of Technology, 2004. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15932/.

Annotation:
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to facilitate an improved understanding by intensive care nurses about their care of family members of critically ill patients. The study aimed to challenge intensive care nurses to reconceptulaise family nursing within the context of the intensive care unit (ICU). Background to the study: Critical illness is not an event that occurs in isolation for the patient and staff. It affects the patient's family in a unique way. A plethora of literature exists identifying the needs of family members in the ICU. However, there are considerably fewer studies which have examined interventions to meet family members' needs and no identified research that discreetly examined the concept of family-focused nursing in the intensive care environment. Design of the study: This study utilised a collaborative action research methodology. It was developed in four phases through the cyclical, dynamic steps of action research. Setting: This study was undertaken in the general intensive care facility of a metropolitan tertiary referral hospital. Phase One: Phase One of the study was the establishment of a collaborative action research group (CARG) with interested registered nurses working in a general intensive care unit. The CARG explored the first two research questions of this study: 1) What are intensive care nurses' perceptions of family-focused nursing? and 2) Is familyfocused nursing appropriate in the intensive care environment? Data were collected through audio taping meetings, flip chart notes and the researcher's reflective diary. Data analysis was undertaken utilising open coding. For the first research question, open coding of the data revealed two categories relating to perceptions of family focused intensive care nursing: partnership in care and maintaining a balance. For the second research question, CARG members agreed unanimously that family focused nursing was appropriate in the intensive care environment. The CARG determined future direction of the action research phases, commencing with a family needs analysis in Phase Two. Phase Two: Phase Two of the study was the utilization of a descriptive survey to determine family member needs in the ICU to determine focuses for interventions during Phase Three. Both family members and staff in the ICU were surveyed utilising the Critical Care Family Needs Index (CCFNI) (Molter & Leske, 1983). Data were analysed by the CCFNI subcategories of assurance, proximity, information, comfort and support, comparing means, rank ordering of means and t-test for statistically significant differences in means between the family members and staff participants. Results indicated that statistically significant differences in means scores between family members and staff participants were in the CCFNI categories of assurance, proximity, information and support. On the basis of these results, a platform for Phase Three of this study arose. The areas for intervention for Phase Three were identified by the CARG as: the provision of staff education seminars to raise staff awareness of family needs and the development of a structured family assessment tool to identify family needs in the ICU. Phase Three: Phase Three of the study addressed research question three: "How can intensive care nurses provide care that is focused toward the family of the critically ill patient?" Phase Three examined practice interventions in two areas. Phase Three Part A was the implementation of nursing staff education seminars. Forty-two nursing staff participated in the family needs education seminars. Data were collected by detailed researcher field notes and completion of a descriptive survey, the CCFNI, post seminar attendance. Thirty-five participants completed the CCFNI. This CCFNI data from nursing participants in the education seminars was compared to family members CCFNI data from Phase Two. Open coding of data from the education seminars revealed codes of family needs, visiting, family presence, encouragement, simple things and boundaries under the theme of "establishing the context" and attitudes, confidence, empathy and culture under the theme of "building a partnership". CCFNI results highlighted statistically significant differences in means scores between family members and staff participants were in the subcategories of proximity and support. Results demonstrated that through understanding family members needs that intensive care nurses can provide care that is focused toward the family of the critically ill patient. This is a building process to be achieved over time. Phase Three Part B was the content validity development of a family assessment tool for the Computer Information System (CIS) in the ICU. A family assessment tool (See Figure 6.1) was developed through the literature and in consultation with the CARG. A series of focus groups were organised. All nursing staff in the general ICU were invited to participate. Twenty-nine registered nurses (43.9%, n=66) participated in the family assessment tool focus groups. The five domains of the family assessment tool, family roles, family spokesperson, family perception and coping, family issues and family health needs, were each discussed to determine readability, clarity and applicability. The focus groups agreed on content validity of the family assessment tool. (See Figure 6.2). Phase Four: Finally, Phase Four of the study has addressed research question four: "Is action research an appropriate methodology to transform intensive care nursing practice?" Somekh's (1995) framework was utilised to guide this critical evaluation. It is suggested that action research is an appropriate methodology to transform intensive care nursing practice as it enables the development of professional, it is sensitive to the specific nature of intensive care nursing, it acknowledges of attributes of the researcher in the process. It is also an appropriate methodological choice as it provides opportunity for a critical evaluation and a platform for the ongoing nature of the action research journey. Conclusions: Overall the findings achieved the objectives of the study in that organisational, cultural and clinical practice changes were identified to facilitate family-focused intensive care nursing. Collaboration occurred with intensive care nurses to effect change. The action research process involved in the change process was articulated throughout the four phases of the study. An improved understanding by intensive care nurses about their family nursing practice was demonstrated in Phase Three and the efficacy of action research methodology for clinical practice change was demonstrated in Phase Four.

van, Duijn Diandra. „The Importance of Gender Equality in Climate Action : An investigation into how UN member states view the relation between gender equality and climate action“. Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-432709.

Annotation:
Scientists warn that the current rate of climate change will raise average global temperature by 4°C compared to 1990, although warming of +2°C will already have dire effects throughout the world. Therefore, the UN acknowledges SDG 13 (Climate Action) as one of the most important goals for the coming decade in order to fight climate change. Another focus of the UN is SDG 5 (Gender Equality), which is also an overarching goal but still lagging behind. Working on one of the goals can have a positive effect on other goals. Therefore a synergy can be created when investigating how climate change affects gender equality and how gender equality affects climate action. The link between gender equality and climate action was already established by the UN at the Beijing Platform of Action in 1995. However, there has been little research into how government representatives understand how the goals are interconnected. These representatives are important in the drafting of new policy and keeping the UN accountable for incorporating gender into its policies. Hence, this thesis investigates how the relationship between gender equality and climate action is viewed by government representatives, as well as in national climate documents. A content analysis was performed on National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate change Gender Action Plans (ccGAPs). The results illustrate that the location and expertise of the interviewees impacted their opinions greatly. The interviewees based at permanent missions at the UN headquarter in New York were of the opinion that their government thought the link existed but acknowledged more should be done to convince other countries as the link was not taken for a fact. The interviewees working with the UNFCCC negotiations, however, said all member states agreed on the importance of including gender equality in climate action. Another finding is that only one-third of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) contained gender perspectives. Of these, one-third mentioned women as victims of climate change and two-thirds saw women as actors of change in climate action. Establishing a firm agreement on the link between gender equality and climate action within UN bodies is important to expanding the impact of climate policies on both gender quality and climate action.

Buchanan, Lauren-Ashley. „The dilemmatic nature of luring communication: an action-implicative discourse analysis of online predator and P-J member interaction“. Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3054.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The occurrence of child sex abuse in the United States has long been considered a problem of paramount importance (e.g. Durkin, 2002; Howitt, 2008; Jenkins, 1998). Historically, the primary assumption was that the sexual solicitation of children occurred face-to-face. However, with the advent of communication technologies, people began to realize the internet's role in child solicitation. In an effort to combat this mode of child luring, a concerned citizen created P-J, an organization that seeks to identify and incriminate online predators (OPs). Members of this organization (PJMs) wait in online spaces for OPs to approach them. Then PJMs communicate as if they are minors to gather incriminating evidence against the OPs. PJMs and OPs have incompatible goals for their interactions. OPs' aim to foster a sexual relationship with a minor without being punished for it. PJMs' aim to gather enough evidence against OPs to convict them and prevent the future luring of children. To accomplish these goals, PJMs and OPs communicate with each other and face unique dilemmas in doing so. The current dissertation employs Action-Implicative Discourse Analysis (AIDA; Tracy, 1995), a theory-method package that helps identify strategies used by interactants to address their institutionally based communicative dilemmas, to answer the research questions: 1) How do PJMs communicatively address their dilemma of encouraging online predators to pursue sexual contact without entrapping or making OPs suspicious, and 2) How do OPs communicatively address their dilemma of seducing their targets without getting caught or scaring off the presumed minor? By doing so, the project expands extant knowledge of grooming and computer-mediated self-presentation. It also extends the use of AIDA to contexts beyond organizations and formal institutions. Through the sampling and constant comparison procedure of 40 PJM-OP instant messenger transcripts provided by the organization's website, the researcher identified four overarching categories of strategies that PJMs used to manage their dilemma: Target Presentation, OP Safety, Sexual/Relational Contribution Management, and Bust Facilitation. The researcher also identified five overarching categories of strategies for OPs: Identity Establishment, Relationship Management, Safety Precautions, Sexual Communication Engagement, and Meet Facilitation. Within these categories are many strategies PJMs and OPs utilized in an effort to address their dilemmas of attaining their goals while avoiding risks. By identifying the aforementioned strategies, the researcher satisfied her primary goal of recognizing and understanding how PJMs and OPs attempt to reach their respective goals while avoiding risks. In addition to fulfilling this primary goal, the results of this project entail implications for several different lines of research. Specifically, the results of this dissertation extend research on traditional and online grooming, self-presentation online, and AIDA. The results also provide practical implications concerning what adolescents should be wary of when communicating with unknown others online. Additionally, the study has the capacity to help PJMs become more aware of OPs' strategies as well as their own. This awareness could help PJMs more efficiently train new PJMs and gain a deeper understanding of their interactions.

Rivera, Ricardo Enrique. „Studies into the mechanistic basis for local anesthetic action on transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 in vitro“. Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44221.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Transient receptor potential subfamily V, member 1 (TRPV1) channels are important integrators of noxious stimuli with pronounced expression in nociceptive neurons. Local anesthetics have been shown to modulate these nonselective cation channels in vivo and in vitro. However, little is known about the specific interactions between local anesthetic molecules and TRPV1 channels. This thesis therefore was dedicated to examining the mechanistic basis by which local anesthetic compounds act on TRPV1 channels from a perspective of neuronal manipulation for nociceptive blockade. The experimental approach involved a series of in vitro laboratory studies where wild-type TRPV1, TRPV4, and mutant TRPV1 channels were expressed in Xenopus leavis oocytes and cation currents recorded using the two-electrode voltage clamp technique. QX-314 and lidocaine activated TRPV1 channels at millimolar concentrations, but not TRPV4 channels. The TRPV1 antagonist, capsazepine, blocked QX-314- and lidocaine-evoked inward currents through a vanilloid-dependent pathway. At sub-activating concentrations (< 1 mM), QX-314 potently inhibited capsaicin-evoked TRPV1 currents. This thesis’ main results establish that the quaternary lidocaine derivative, QX-314, exerts biphasic effects on TRPV1 channels, inhibiting capsaicin-evoked TRPV1 currents at lower (micromolar) concentrations and activating TRPV1 channels at higher (millimolar) concentrations. Further pharmacological characterization of amino-amide inhibition showed that QX-314 and lidocaine inhibit vanilloid- and proton-evoked currents in TRPV1 channels. Studies defining the molecular determinants of blockade revealed that lidocaine inhibits TRPV1 channels with nanomolar affinity, while the neutral derivative, benzocaine, does not, indicating that a titratable amine mediates the high-affinity block. Consistent with this hypothesis, extracellular tetraethylammonium (TEA) and tetramethylammonium (TMA) application produced potent, voltage-dependent pore block. The overall conclusion is that local anesthetics, previously reported to be able to enter cells through the activated TRPV1 pore, also act as multi-agonist permeant pore blockers. These findings provide an elementary structural model for the molecular interactions between established nerve blocking compounds and the TRPV1 nociceptor. At a fundamental level, this work introduces a novel use for these compounds as molecular probes for the study of TRP channels, whereas at a clinical level, the present results represent a step forward in the development of long-lasting, nociceptive-specific agents for the treatment of pain.

The strategy contains of eight action fields, onwards only the field within education & training will be examined further in line with the strategy’s main objective to provide equal opportunities for young people in education. The theory of Normalization Process Theory focuses on policy implementation and how it becomes fully embedded within the intended society. Throughout the examination will be of how the implementation is supposed to work and how it actually is put into action within the two member states selected for this study, Sweden and Cyprus. The question to examine is to what degree has ‘the EU Youth Strategy’, and the fact of it being implemented within the member states, influenced the reduction of early school leavers. Through the method of comparative case study approach, materials were gattered throughout a variety of forms such as legislations, policies, evaluations, reports and many more. The analysis consists of the implementations of the action into the states, through what institutions and national legislations, as well as analysing the received grant from the European Union and what it has produced within the states. In conclusion, presenting the results of Sweden and Cyprus, both succeeding to reduce early school leavers, nevertheless, through different actions and interpretations of the strategy.

Money laundering is a global problem that has adverse effects on both the developed and developing countries. If unchecked, it accelerates crime and criminal activities, affects the economy, undermines the integrity of financial markets, undermines the legitimate private sector, causes loss of revenue, poses security threats to privatisation efforts and brings about reputational risks as well as social costs.1 Given the transnational and cross-border nature of money laundering, the fight against it is global. This is why in 1989 the G72 countries decided to set up the FATF3 as a global standard-setting body for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and combating of terrorist financing (CFT). The FATF has since developed standards for countries across the globe to adopt so as to facilitate this global fight. The standards are in the form of recommendations, and so far there are Forty Recommendations on money laundering (hereafter referred so as the Recommendations), Eight Special Recommendations on CFT, and a Ninth Special Recommendation on cash-couriers. In order to enhance its work and the adoption of its Recommendations, the FATF has also facilitated the establishment of FATF- styled regional bodies (hereinafter referred to as FSRBs) across the world. One such group is ESAAMLG, which was established in 1999. Its mandate is to coordinate and guide its member countries in the implementation of the Recommendations and guidelines. Currently, it has 15 member countries.8 Over the first ten years of its existence, among other things, ESAAMLG has through its members, achieved the following in its mandate: all members except Uganda have enacted AML legislation and some have set up structures that are essential for the implementation of the Recommendations Despite the above-mentioned achievements, the overall implementation of the Recommendations has been generally slow and low. Most of the member countries have not yet enforced their enacted AML legislation as evidenced by low rate of money laundering prosecutions in the region. Some have not yet established financial intelligence Units (FIUs) nor ratified or domesticated important AML related international legal instruments, let alone train personnel adequately. The international instruments comprise the 2000 United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (Palermo Convention) and the1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Vienna Convention). There are also inordinate delays in the passing of AML legislation as well as the amendment of other domestic legislation, which is necessary in order to harmonise such laws with the AML standards. This gives rise to unevenness, disconnectedness and time variability in the implementation of the Recommendations among the member countries. The main question this paper seeks to answer is this: Are there obstacles to the implementation of the Recommendations in Eastern and Southern Africa?

After being freed from colonization, the West African States have set up commonly economic integration organizations to promote their economic and social development. The creation of the majority of those organizations is based on the European example and they have an independent legal personality and a body with specific rules in charge of integrating uniformly the internal legal environment of the different Member States. The harmonious functioning of the system requires, among others, the existence of an independent structure designed to take control of the general balance organization and achieve a uniform interpretation of the Community norms. Within the framework of the WAEMU as well as in the ECOWAS, this protective function is delegated to integrated judicial bodies whose main mission consists in making sure that a submission to the law related to the interpretation and compliance with Treaties is effective. The goal of such a contribution is to point out that the settled protection device is functioning, on the one hand, by the cooperation mechanisms introduced by justice courts and the other components of the Community system and, on the other hand, by the judicial control over the community structures and the Member States

Xefteri, Stamatina.

European Union directives have always been considered as a legal instrument relied upon by individuals vis-à-vis a defaulting Member State. The right to rely on directives as well as their application are examined under the sole lens of the rights of the litigants. Contrary to this perspective, the present study aims to demonstrate that directives become a legal means of intervention in the domestic legal order, insofar as national authorities rely on and apply them in their relations with citizens and other national or European authorities. The emergence of secondary legislation has disrupted the hierarchy of norms, as well as reshaped the obligations imposed on the administrative authorities. On the basis of the primacy of European Union law and the imperative of efficiency in all Member States, the legality of national rules requires compliance with directives. Thus, directives claim their place among the conventional parameters of legality, but they also come in conflict with the latter at times or even replace any national rule to the contrary effect. However, the directive as an instrument is not only a source of supranational law in the hands of the administration to be applied passively, but also a European standard used to serve its own purposes, as well as the objectives pursued by the European Union. In fact, the evolution of European and administrative case-law has not only led to a strengthening of the obligations of the administration, but has also amplified the forms of relying on a directive to the benefit of the administration and recognized the autonomy of the administrative authorities over the legislature as far as the implementation of directives is concerned. These elements reveal the particularly dynamic role of all the administrative authorities acting within the scope of the directives, in their transposition and implementation in the national legal orders

Wolfaardt (1995) states that organizations in South Africa are experiencing immense pressure to implement affirmative action due to political, socio-economic and social factors. Many of these organizations however, are still persisting with the status quo. Affirmative action has been incorporated into the philosophies and values of organizations, yet little progress has been made to this effect. The Anncron Clinic is one of more than 80 private hospitals and clinics of Afrox Healthcare Ltd, which aims to make employees in the hospital more representative of the community within which it is functioning. Affirmative action and equal job opportunity programs are implemented at the Anncron Clinic, but the outcome of the implementation of these programs is perceived to have a negative effect on productivity and mutual personnel relationships. The aim of this study was to determine the experiences of affirmative action of a private hospital's staff members. The researcher made use of an exploratory research design which aided him through the various stages of the research. This research helped the researcher in determining and understanding the experiences of affirmative action of the Anncron Clinic's staff members. A sample was drawn by selecting a group of six individuals from the services department. The total number of respondents was 15, which make up 8,6% of the Anncron Clinic's 174 employees. Various themes have been identified which influence employees of the &on Clinic's experience of affirmative action. These themes include pressure, suspicion, motivation, frustration, the behaviour of doctors, and management. Recommendations are presented regarding the acceptance of affirmative action in the Anncron Clinic.

Abstract: This research seeks to analyze the political memes from the perspective of the insertion of the militants into collective and shared behaviors of support or opposition to candidacies, in consideration of the second round of the 2018 Brazilian Presidential Election. For this, a theoretical exploration is constructed to take into account the transformations of the society in the process of mediatization, where the processes of interaction that woven into networks are hybrids and the social logics are highly based on the media since they adopt dynamics of this social field which is noted especially when observing the political institutions and mobilizations. This work is based on the political thinking of Jacques Rancière (1996, 2009, 2012, 2016), for whom politics is the contestation of the police order that establishes hierarchically defined places to be occupied by people and a consensual distribution of the sensible, not restricting itself to the juridical-political structure of management of the collective interests. Then, are presented, starting from Dawkins (2018 [1976]) and Shifman (2014), the investigative unfoldings that frame the memes as meaningful elements that find in social networking sites a fruitful environment to multiply and be able to conform political action. Based specifically on the memes grassroots action, characterized by collective performatic actions with behavioral content appropriated by these militants to guide discussions, it is sought to understan... Chronic diseases pose public health concerns globally with an increasing trend in developing countries. The development of interventions to minimize or prevent the burden associated with chronic diseases has therefore become a necessity. In 2002 the School of Public Health of the University of the Western Cape developed a health club intervention in Khayelitsha. This intervention focused on promoting healthy lifestyles, particularly improved diet and physical activity. The objectives of this study was to determine whether members were more physically active than non-members and to determine whether members made healthier dietary choices than non-members.

There are many leadership theories that dominate the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, however there is a lack of understanding as to which leadership processes may be most appropriate for action teams in high stress environments. Previous research has articulated leadership behaviors, but has largely ignored the temporal processes of leadership, and how it changes throughout the operating team’s tenure. The proposed study investigates two types of leadership, namely shared and autocratic leadership, that take place during critical steps of the perioperative process and relates these leadership behaviors to team dynamics and psychological processes. Specifically, this study builds upon other studies by testing how leadership behaviors are related to levels of psychological safety and the optimization of teamwork and communication among team members. We were also interested in understanding if the surgeon’s perception of past performance of their team has an impact on the amount of trust the leader has in his/her team and if this in turn, has an impact on the type of leadership utilized during the team’s tenure. As an exemplar environment, we explored these dynamics in the operating theater, which is a high stakes environment requiring both technical and non-technical skills, such as leadership, communication, and teamwork. Results show that the correlation between the surgeon’s perceived past performance of the team and the trust the surgeon has in his/her team and the relationship between team’s trust and teamwork and communication were significant at the alpha =.1 level. All other relationships were non-significant.

In the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, many leadership theories have been developed, however, there is a lack of understanding as to which type of leadership is best for teams who work in high-stress environments, such as the operating room. This study looks at two types of leadership: shared leadership and autocratic leadership. Shared leadership is when all team members emerge and have a leadership role, whereas autocratic leadership is when one person makes all the decisions without consulting other team members. Previous research has articulated leadership behaviors, but has largely ignored the temporal processes of leadership, and how it changes over time throughout the surgical procedure. This study builds upon other studies by testing how leadership behaviors are related to levels of psychological safety and the optimization of teamwork and communication among team members. Elections are traditionally characterized as mechanisms capable of aligning the interests of representatives with those of voters. The absence of elections for the Canadian Senate has drawn criticism precisely because there is no mechanism to ensure the accountability of senators to the electorate. That said, the constant requirement incumbent on MPs to respond to one’s constituents has positive and negative implications, as does senators’ freedom from the constraints of re-election. In this paper, I show how MPs and senators operate under different conventions of party discipline and have a propensity to advance different types of private members’ bills. In the Commons, the drive for re-election and the demands of party discipline motivate MPs to advance locally or regionally focused policy. In contrast, the absence of elections and greater independence from party allows senators to view policy through a more pan-Canadian lens than MPs. Thus, my data casts the absence of elections in a more optimistic light, showing that freedom from the constraints of re-election actually allows senators to serve as valuable complements to MPs. The necessities of modem democracy dictates that the people must have a hand in choosing who represents them, yet shifting to an elected Senate may not accord with the collective needs of the country.

Focus group discussions as well as in depth interviews were used to explore the RCL members' views on the nature of their participation during SGB deliberations. the main fining of this study is that, due to external as well as in-school factors, a huge gap exists between normative RCL policy exp[ectations and the actual manifestation policy in the real world of the RCL members' schools. the findings of the study reveal a lack of participative capacities among these RCL members, which, in combination with a non participative culture at their homes, the community and the school, leads to learners being excluded from democratic processes.

Cell polarity is required for asymmetric division, a mechanism to generate cell diversity by distributing fate determinants unequally to daughter cells. The establishment of polarity requires the evolutionarily conserved partitioning-defective (PAR) proteins as well as the actin cytoskeleton. In Caenorhabditis elegans one-cell embryos, the PAR proteins are segregated into an anterior (PAR-3, PAR-6) and a posterior (PAR-1, PAR-2) corticaldomain. The formation of PAR polarity correlates with anterior-posterior differences in the contractile activity of the cortex, known as "contractile polarity". It is thought that regulation of contractile polarity controls the establishment of PAR polarity, but detailed evidence to support this idea is lacking. To investigate how modulation of the actomyosin cytoskeleton affects polarity establishment, the acto-myosin cytoskeleton was perturbed by RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) of two Rho GTPases, CDC-42 and RHO-1. To examine how Rho GTPases are implemented in actin remodeling, it is important to analyze how their activity is controlled and how different activities affect polarity formation. The role of two putative Rho GTPase regulators, the Rho GTPase exchange factor (GEF) ECT-2 and the Rho GTPase activating protein (GAP) K09H11.3 were analyzed with respect to polarity formation. The formation of polarity was analyzed by using GFP-labeled proteins, and several different tracking methods were used to investigate the establishment of contractile and PAR polarity in more detail. This study demonstrates that both RHO-1 and CDC-42 are involved in polarity establishment in C. elegans embryos. But importantly, both act by different mechanisms. RHO-1 organizes the acto-myosin cytoskeleton into a contractile network, and therefore is essential for the formation of contractile polarity. The organization of the acto-myosin cytoskeleton is critical to ensure proper PAR protein distribution. Furthermore, a balance of RHO-1 activity by the GEF ECT-2 and the GAP K09H11.3 appears to be important for cortical contractility, for PAR protein domain size and for mutual exclusion of the PAR proteins. Although CDC-42 was shown to be a universal regulator of the actin cytoskeleton, CDC-42 acts downstream of contractile polarity. CDC-42 is required for linking PAR-6 to the cortex. In the absence of RHO-1 and ECT-2, PAR-6 and CDC-42 are not localized to the anterior cortex. This suggests that RHO-1, by organizing the actomyosin cytoskeleton into a contractile network, regulates the segregation of CDC-42 to the anterior cortex, and concomitantly PAR-6 localization. This study shows that the distribution of PAR is related to cortical activity and supports the model that the actin cytoskeleton plays an important role in polarity establishment.

Abstract This cross-sectional survey study investigated middle and high school administrative team members’ leadership classifications and perceptions of secondary principals’ leadership actions and behaviors in the context of change and to what extent these perceptions are gender specific. In addition to gender, the study also examined the impact of race/ethnicity, age, campus level, length of employment in the district, length of time working with the principal, and closeness to the principals on leadership actions and behaviors. The results of the study are intended to highlight the importance and value of feminine-inspired leadership approaches and administrative team members’ perspectives of leadership in managing and leading the change process. The study targeted the leadership actions and behaviors of 39 middle school and 28 high school principals assigned to traditional secondary schools in the southwestern United States. Administrative team members’ perceptions of secondary school principals’ approaches to leadership served as the basis for the study, which investigated whether administrative team members perceived principals’ leadership actions or behaviors in a change context to be gender specific. Male and female administrative team members (n=210) were surveyed using the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ), Form XII – fourth revision (Ohio State University, 1962). Based on survey results, secondary principals were classified as dynamic, considerate, passive, and structured leaders as rated by administrative team members using the LBDQ. The results of the study revealed that gender and school level of administrative team members did not influence the classification of secondary principals as dynamic, considerate, passive, or structured leaders. The ratings of those principals perceived as dynamic were statistically significantly higher than those of principals as passive and structured leaders. Out of 62 secondary principals, administrative team members classified principals as follows: dynamic leaders 63% (n=39), considerate leaders 5% (n=3), passive leaders 16% (n=10) and structured leaders 16% (n=10). Additionally, dynamic leaders received a statistically significant higher rating of closeness to principal when compared to passive and structured leaders. The findings of the study, which illuminate the perspectives of administrative team members with regard to secondary school principals, have implications for informing research on school leadership as well as educational leadership practices.

The formal governance structure is more complex in trade unions than in many other organizations. Trade union researchers have drawn attention to the tensions between union administrative and representative systems and the fact that control in unions is bi-directional from leaders to members (through formal control systems), and from members to leaders (through democratic structures). This study has shown that the utilization of market orientation methods has the capacity to strengthen the administrative system without interfering with or being hindered by the representative system. The findings related to market orientation methods presented in this thesis are not of such a character that they can be deemed to be specific for trade unions. Therefore, as a general rule, market orientation methods need no trade union-specific adaptation to be utilized. The setting for this study is Sif, a major industrial white-collar trade union in Sweden. The change process of Sif described in the thesis suggests an increased degree of market orientation. The study has focused on two specific tools/techniques; The Sif Barometer - an annual membership satisfaction survey, and The Design Dialogue Methodology – an internally developed group interview method. These methods have contributed to an enhanced level of market orientation. Propositions for better contributions to strategic positioning and service innovation are presented in terms of design principles. An identified problem is that the potential for double-loop learning has been limited in the organization. Some propositions for enhancing double-loop learning are set out: Knowledge enhances learning: the utilization of market information requires knowledge among managers and employees about the instruments used to ensure accurate interpretations and utilization of the results acquired. Knowledge thus has a role in breaking down the barriers preventing accurate utilization of market information. Task alignment is a viable strategy for the creation of learning micro-climates: Learning through the change of work behaviors is the core element of a task alignment strategy. Task alignment is a strategy targeting learning capabilities in the organization that is not only an approach for solving problems in the long term, but also an immediate response to tangible business problems. Action research may contribute to double-loop learning: The action research method has inherent change properties connected to its "learning by change" approach. Actors should consider the discrepancies between espoused theories and theories-in-use: Various political behaviors hampering double-loop learning have been traced. A broad level of participation and involvement of managers and employees during the development or adaptation of the market orientation instrument can enable open and trustful discussions for enhancing double-loop learning.

Mattering involves feeling as though oneself belongs in a community and tends to influence one’s college experience. The issue of mattering has been explored in social psychology and education literature. Such research has sought to understand the transitions and necessary role changes of college students. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of studies on perceived mattering within one specific college student population—student veterans and active service members (SV/ASM). Higher learning institutions have expressed concerns about the academic progress of the SV/ASM population upon transitioning into college. However, no previous studies have examined the relationship between SV/ASM’s sense of mattering and their academic success. As such, the purpose of this study was twofold. First, it attempted to develop a mattering scale in order to examine SV/ASM mattering. Second, it explored the predictive ability of perceived mattering variables to SV/ASM’s academic success, as measured by their cumulative grade point average (GPA). The Mattering Scales for Adult Students in Higher Education (MHE) was used in this quantitative study with demographic questions. A sample of 129 SV/ASM enrolled at a research-based university in the midwestern region of the United States was used in this survey. An exploratory factor analysis was applied to operationalize the construct of mattering from MHE in order to investigate the SV/ASM’s feelings of mattering regarding the higher education environment. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were utilized to examine the effects of the mattering variables from MHE on the SV/ASM’s GPA. This study found that four mattering dimensions in the higher education environment could be employed to measure SV/ASM’s sense of mattering: peers, faculty, advising, and administration. The findings revealed that the SV/ASM generally have a neutral sense of mattering to their non-military peers and the university’s administration, while expressing a positive sense of mattering to their faculty members and advisors. The findings also indicated that peers and administration may impact SV/ASM’s academic success. Therefore, higher learning institutions should strive to provide tailored administration and positive peer interactions for SV/ASM in order to promote their overall academic success in higher education.

So many people do not tell their own stories, paint their own pictures, dance or sing to their own tunes, that it is hard, but not impossible I hope, to separate the authentic from the empty rhetoric. Authenticity of both process and experience was something actively sought within this research drawing as it did on a critical community psychology approach. In what I hoped would be a participatory action research process, an evaluation of a community organisation, led by people with lived experience of mental distress (myself included) was undertaken. Research questions focused on: the outcomes that mattered most to diverse member’s; and the fit of the participatory process with members of the newly formed So What’s Changed? Evaluation Team (SWC?ET). Whilst Participatory Video Production was the initial choice, collectively becoming stuck led to the co-development of a Body-mapping Evaluation Tool (B-mET). This supported co-researchers in documenting their past, present and hoped for future in relation to both them-selves and the organisation. A transactional analysis developmental theory Cycles of Power (Levin-Landheer, 1982) was used as a framework to map the PAR cycles that took place within this evaluation process. In addition, multi-modal thematic data analysis led to the creation of collective communication collages that privilege the visual and the voices of the co-researchers. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was tentatively suggested as a framework for the outcomes that mattered most to members. What the participatory process offered was a shared, safe space in which to explore the ways in which members wanted to represent their experience. PVP initially proved useful and fitted as a tool to use within the group process. However, it did not fit when used individually. The body-mapping fitted with most though not all members. The knowledge gained, despite the challenges, supported members in the development of inter-personal relationships, awareness of self and others, knowledge and use of power and the subsequent activist and advocacy actions taken by SWC?ET members and for some within the wider community. Further research is planned to explore the use of creative methods, including digitisation of the B-mET tool, in evaluative work as a critical community psychologist in both an academic and an activist role.

The current study focuses on the adoption of affirmative action policies by the public sector higher education system in Brazil, more specifically by the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). The overall purpose of the research was to analyse the UERJ experience of introducing affirmative action in 2003 by means of a quota system, taking into consideration its genesis, characteristics, implementation and initial results. The study aimed in particular at investigating the experience within the boundaries of a highly prestigious academic space in this University - the Law School - focusing on the stance adopted by the faculty with regard tothe experience already being implemented in their classrooms. We have opted for a qualitative approach in our research. To this end, a review of the literature on the topic of affirmative action, a survey of University official documents and statistical data as well as semi-structured interviews with Law School faculty members were carried out. The 2003 experience proved the political and academic viability of a more democratic access to courses of higher social status. However, the issue of the permanence of quota students in a context where University resources are insufficient has generated tensions and challenges that both the UERJ and the wider communities will inevitably have to meet.

As social media has emerged to become a key site for contemporary communications and cultural production, the internet meme has penetrated every level of social networking online. Albeit being a global phenomenon with pervasive discursive power in a number of fields ranging from humour to international politics and cyber warfare, comparatively little research has been made into how internet memes work on the discursive level of identity formation and their influence on the formation of internet-based social movements. Using Reddit stock market anarchists r/WallStreetBets as case study, this thesis will use Critical Discourse Analysis to analyze how internet memes work on the level of socio-political formations and how their function can be understood in relation to entropic social environments online. This thesis investigates how internet memes are used as a tool for creation of motifs for action, identity markers, connective action, and social narrativization within an ambivalent social movement online. Introducing the novel term ”memetic discourse” as a way to understand memes as transferable units of memetically programmed content, this study shows the potential of memes to act as effective yet unstable modes of communication within networked environments.

Annotation:

Thyroid growth and function is partly regulated by growth factors binding to receptors on the cell surface. In the present thesis, the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily members have been studied for their role in regulation of growth and differentiation of both normal and neoplastic thyroid epithelial cells.

TGF-β1 is a negative regulator of thyrocyte growth and function. However, the importance of other TGF-β superfamily members has not been fully investigated. TGF-β1, activin A, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-7 and their receptors were found to be expressed in porcine thyrocytes. In addition to TGF-β1, activin A was also found to be a negative regulator of thyroid growth and function, and both stimulated phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of Smad proteins. Furthermore, TGF-β1 and epidermal growth factor (EGF) demonstrated a synergistic negative effect on thyrocyte differentiation. Simultaneous addition of the two factors resulted in a loss of the transepithelial resistance and expression of the epithelial marker E-cadherin. This was followed by a transient expression of N-cadherin.

Despite the extremely malignant character of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) tumor cells, established cell lines are still responsive to TGF-β1. A majority of the cell lines were also found to be growth inhibited by BMP-7. BMP-7 induced cell cycle arrest of the ATC cell line HTh 74 in a dose- and cell density-dependent manner. This was associated with upregulation of p21CIP1 and p27KIP1, decreased cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) activity and hypophosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb). TGF-β1, and to some extent also BMP-7, induced the expression of N-cadherin and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9. Stimulation of HTh 74 cells with TGF-β1 increased the migration through a reconstituted basement membrane indicating an increased invasive phenotype of the cells.

Taken together, these data show that TGF-β superfamily members not only affect growth and function of normal thyroid follicle cells but may also, in combination with EGF, play a role in cell dedifferentiation. This study additionally suggests that the TGF-β superfamily members may be important for the invasive properties of ATC cells.

Annotation:
Neurological problems caused by stroke and spinal cord injury as well as the weakness of skeletal muscles may considerably affect the motor ability of the elderly and infirm. Traditional solutions of assistance and treatment for these dependent people are relatively costly; they generally need significant human efforts and financial resources from caregivers and national healthcare centers. In this context, robotics appears as a convenient and promising solution to develop assistive systems for improving the autonomy of dependent people. Lower limb exoskeletons are wearable robots that can be used as assistive devices for augmenting the wearer’s motor ability and/or improving the effectiveness of neuromuscular rehabilitation. Recently, they have attracted increasing interest in the robotics community. As lower limb exoskeletons exhibit close cognitive and physical interactions with the wearer, a fundamental function is to provide appropriate power assistance by taking into account the wearer’s sensor-motor ability. Consequently, it is of great importance to develop human intention based control strategies. Meanwhile, from the exoskeleton’s viewpoint, the physical contacts with the wearer and the environment are both considered disturbances affecting the accomplishment of the wearer’s desired movements. These disturbances should also be taken into account during the design of control strategies. In this thesis, we develop three assistive control strategies for lower limb exoskeletons. In the meantime, two modes of assistance are studied: the passive mode in which the wearer has very limited motor ability as well as the active-assisted mode in which the wearer has certain motor ability but that is insufficient to perform autonomously a desired physical movement. In the first control strategy, the wearer is assumed to be in passive mode. A robust sliding mode control approach is developed based on the use of a nonlinear disturbance observer, in order to guarantee accurate tracking performance of desired knee joint movements. In the second control strategy, we propose a human intention based nonlinear active impedance control structure, in which the wearer is in an active-assisted mode. This assistive strategy is used to assist the wearer in single-task physical activities, for instance, the knee joint flexion/ extension movement. We investigate the performance of the proposed control structure based on two case studies: knee-joint flexion/extension movements and sit-to-stand movements. Finally, the third control strategy is developed to assist the wearer during walking activities. We propose a new approach that is able to detect the gait mode at the early beginning of a new step using the kinematic features namely velocity and position of the wearer’s feet during walking. The proposed gait mode detection approach makes it possible to select appropriate kinematic and kinetic models for each gait mode. Different assistive strategies are developed: partial gravity compensation, virtual-spring/damper based impedance assistance and zero impedance assistance. These strategies are combined differently according to the estimated wearer’s gait mode. To evaluate the proposed control strategies, two lower limb exoskeleton prototypes are developed: a knee joint lower limb exoskeleton, called EICOSI, and a full lower limb exoskeleton, called E-ROWA
