Previous research has found mixed results regarding the association between acculturation and substance use in Hispanic populations. Additional research is warranted to examine relations among facets of acculturation, particularly acculturative stress, and marijuana use. The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-esteem mediates the relation between acculturative stress and a lifetime history of marijuana use among a sample of Hispanic college students. Hispanic college students ( N = 204; Mean age = 20.3 years) from a large southwestern university participated in an online study and reported on lifetime marijuana use, self-esteem, and acculturative stress. We evaluated the hypothesis that self-esteem would mediate the relation between acculturative stress and the likelihood of reporting a history of marijuana use, utilizing Hayes’ SPSS macro, which provides estimates of boot-strapped confidence intervals for the indirect effect. Results showed that self-esteem did not significantly mediate the relation between acculturative stress and likelihood of marijuana use [ b = .157, 95% CI (−.003, .017)]. Future studies might examine other facets of acculturation in relation to substance use, utilizing a longitudinal approach to better understand these associations.

The historical concept of acculturation proposed by American researchers in the early 19th Century is important nowadays. The object of contemporary scientific knowledge is intercultural interaction not so much between individual ethnic groups or nationalities but between prominent cultural systems or civilizations. The idea of analyzing the concept of acculturation in the historical aspect seems quite timely: migration processes that have swept the world, and Europe in particular, are closely connected with the multidimensional process of acculturation of migrants. The various approaches to understanding what acculturation is and what makes it different from enculturation make it necessary to dig to the roots of the concept and study its further development. That testifies to the relevance of the paper. In this article, based on the methods of analysis and synthesis, diachronic and synchronic comparison, we have made a historical investigation into the insight history of the acculturation concept’s development and traced the transformation of acculturation in foreign and domestic science. Studying the history and development of the acculturation concept, the authors draw the conclusion that its content changes with the development of scientific ideas and social processes, gaining a new meaning and acquiring new features and characteristics.

The psychology of intercultural adaptation was first discussed by Plato. Many modern enculturation theories claim that ethnic minorities (including aboriginal natives, immigrants, refugees, and sojourners) can favor either the dominant culture, or their own minority culture, or both, or neither. Between 1918 and 1984, 68 such theories showed varied and inconsistent terminology, poor citation of earlier research, conflicting and poorly tested predictions of acculturative stress, and lack of logic, for example, 2 cultures in contact logically allow 16 types of acculturation, not just 4. Logic explains why assimilation = negative chauvinism = marginality, why measures of incompatible acculturative attitudes can be positively correlated, and why bicultural integration and marginalisation are confounded constructs. There is no robust evidence that biculturalism is most adaptive.

Bengal is the largest delta in the world. Because of the easy access to natural wealth, many people groups of different ethno-religious backgrounds migrated into Bengal from prehistoric times. Following the conquest of Bengal by the Khalaj descended Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji, the Central and West Asian traditions greatly influenced the Delta throughout about 600 years. Although there were migrations of many other groups, primarily the predominance of Turkic traditions encouraged waves of Turk-Bengali acculturations which helped emerge and mature the Bengali identity in the Delta. Later, there were trends of false narration, propaganda history and attempts of deculturation throughout 190 year-long colonial rule. Yet, the signs of this harmonious and mutual acculturation still survive in archaeological and historical sources of the region. Citing some of them, this study aims to present a glimpse of the process of welfare and Turk-Bengal acculturation in the Bengal Delta.

This research aims to describe the architectural dynamics inherited by the Bedagai Kingdom through cultural acculturation, focusing on the Jamik Ismailiyah Mosque. The mosque was founded in 1880 by Prince Ismailiyah and underwent dynamic changes in form while still maintaining its historical existence. This research uses the historical method which includes heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography to explore the problem in depth. Observations were made using architectural theory and diachronic theory to provide a complete picture of the architectural dynamics of the Jamik Ismailiyah Mosque in Tanjung Beringin District, Serdang Bedagai. The results showed that since the establishment of the mosque in 1880 until 1982, there were various architectural acculturations that mostly still dominated traditional Malay architectural patterns. This research reveals the dynamics and development of the mosque's architectural concept based on history and acculturation findings, including changes in the layout and additions to the mosque building, providing a complete picture of the dynamic development during the period 1937-1982.

The article analyzes the problems and conceptual approaches of research on the history of acculturation policy of the Russian Empire in relation to the annexed territories, which are reflected in the works of modern domestic researchers. The discussion around the acculturation model of understanding the empire as a methodological alternative to the colonial approach is summarized. The article notes the contribution of the researcher S. V. Lyubichankovskiy in the development of the concept of acculturation as a methodological basis for historical research, which, in his opinion, does not contradict the model of colonialism. On the contrary, both theoretical constructs complement each other. S. V. Lyubichankovskiy sees the advantage of the acculturation model in the fact that it is more universal, which allows successfully solving research problems. Through the prism of historiography the history of imperial policy on the integration of nomadic and semi-nomadic ethnoses inhabiting the zone of the south-eastern frontier into the economic and socio-cultural space of the Russian state is shown. The study of the main directions of acculturation policy in relation to the ethnic groups that inhabited the Ural-Volga and Central Asian territories is summarized.

Acculturation is a phenomenon of mixing up the local culture with one or more external cultures, which produces a unique new culture without leaving its original cultural identity. In architecture, acculturation can form new styles that can then develop into a more contemporary architectural form. Cirebon, as one of the geographically strategic areas, is a place where acculturation often occurs. As a city that holds a lot of history, including architecture, the mosques in Cirebon can be the forerunner of the Old Javanese Mosques throughout the Archipelago. The style of the old Cirebon mosques is the result of the acculturation of various cultures. This research explores acculturation in ancient mosques in Cirebon through the Sang Cipta Rasa Mosque and the Panjunan Red Mosque. This research aims to identify acculturation in the object of study through physical element analysis. It can be seen what makes these two study objects become the "face" of the old mosque in Cirebon. Through literature review and observation, it is found that the physical elements of the two study objects were the result of a synthesis of Javanese, Islamic, Hindu-Buddhism, and Chinese architecture.

The article deals with the topic of the common European heritage in the English phraseology. When speaking about the European heritage, we speak about culture, history, traditions, ceremonies shared in the European continent. Subject to analysis in phraseology are quotations of well-known persons, books, works, myths and traditions of international origin that we share in Europe. Acculturation of people is related with the concept of native culture of each person. To know the culture of the homeland is enevitable for understanding the culture of other nations. Moreover, the article deals with connections between culture and the language because they influence each other. After analysing proverbs and sayings of the Slovak and English language, it can be postulated that in most cases their target language for the Slovak as well as the English was Latin language. The existence of cross-linguistic absolute equivalents can result from the fact that idioms or in general, phraseologisms, including paremiological units, come from the same source and are cross-linguistically or even internationally shared, usually as translation loans or calques, which is also a case of some English and Slovak phraseologisms. Absolute equivalents are based on the identical imagery, symbolisms, and literally or almost literally corresponding lexical components of their basic forms.

The review article is aimed at solving a major scientific problem — conducting a comprehensive analysis of modern scientific approaches to the study of the policy of acculturation by means of education, carried out by the Russian Empire in relation to various regions of the country, including in relation to the southeastern frontier, namely nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples of Central Asian and Ural-Volga macroregions of the country in the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries. The accumulated experience of scientific research on the history of acculturation by means of education in the post-reform Russian Empire makes it possible to pose this problem, and the need to determine further promising directions for scientific research into the policy of acculturation makes the topic of this scientific article relevant. The main results of the study are to clarify the main approaches to the study of the policy of acculturation of “foreigners” of the Russian Empire by means of education, generalize the most significant scientific experience in understanding the policy of acculturation in the post-reform decades, as well as identify the most promising issues for further study related to the problems of acculturation of nomadic and semi-nomadic subjects of the Russian Empire through the means of education.

This paper discusses the acculturation of Islam and traditions in the archipelago. The acculturation between Islam and local culture reinforces the concept of the harmony of Islam and local culture that can live hand in hand with their respective values, namely religious values and traditional values that have been acculturated and in direct contact. Acculturation is a concept to describe the long process of meeting two or more values between Islam and local values in which individuals, groups and communities live with the culture they already have. Historical and anthropological approaches are the approaches used in this study. Both of these approaches are used to observe and trace the processes that occur and the formation of a history that surrounds the community. From the search of history carried out it was found that Islam was inseparable from the influence of animist beliefs, dynamism, Hindu-Buddhist religion before Islam came. So that, when Islam comes and meets a pre-existing culture, it influences one another.

12121 Background: Latina breast cancer survivors and their caregivers face unique challenges. Acculturation is the acquisition of the cultural elements of a dominant society. Higher acculturation in Latino survivors is positively correlated with self-efficacy in patient-provider communication and improved patient-reported outcomes. There is a paucity of research on how language acculturation affects caregiver and patient outcomes. We examined associations over time between linguistic acculturation among caregivers of Latina survivors and outcomes of caregiver self-efficacy and anxiety. Methods: We partnered with four community-based organizations that serve Latino families facing cancer. We enrolled 136 Latina breast cancer survivors and their caregivers for a randomized trial comparing a dyadic coping intervention to usual care (e.g., support groups). Participants completed surveys including demographic and clinical information, the short acculturation scale for Hispanics, caregiver inventory to assess self-efficacy and PROMIS domains of anxiety at baseline and 6-months after the intervention. Results: In multivariate linear regressions models, we examined the effect of acculturation on caregiver self-efficacy and anxiety, controlling for demographics (patient and caregiver age, caregiver education, employment), patient treatment history (chemotherapy and surgery) patient and caregiver language preference (Spanish or English) and intervention arm (intervention vs. usual care). Greater caregiver self-efficacy at 6-months was associated with younger patient age (t=-2.93, p=.004), older caregiver age (t=2.63, p = .01), female caregiver gender (t=2.79, p = .006) and higher acculturation (t=2.01, p=.04), controlling for baseline self-efficacy, patient language and randomization group. Caregiver anxiety was not related to caregiver acculturation or patient language preferences. Conclusions: Caregivers’ language acculturation was significantly associated with their self-efficacy over time, suggesting that caregivers with lower acculturation experience lower confidence in their provision of care for Latina survivors. These findings are particularly salient because participants for this study were enrolled from organizations with bilingual services. Caregivers of Latina survivors without access to these community resources may face even more striking challenges. Future work can explore how caregivers’ confidence relates to survivors’ adherence to care and patient outcomes over time.

The Pontianak community has been a multi-ethnic community from the start, with four dominant ethnic groups forming the Pontianak city, namely the Arab, Bugis, Banjar and Riau ethnic groups. The research used a qualitative-rationalistic method with the deeply observed in field case based on the mixed approach between the historical study of the role of each ethnic group and the typology study of architectural building elements. Research sample data in the form of Pontianak old houses are houses built between the early 19th century and the mid-20th century. The results of this study, firstly, the occurrence of ethnic acculturation on the elements of housing architecture in an integrated-assimilative manner. Secondly, the existence of the order of acculturation remained alive in traditional Pontianak community institutions until the mid-20th century shows a strong indication of the continuation of Vernacular Architecture discourse of the Pontianak Malay House.

The research aimed to document the history and culture of Lasem, thereby increasing the knowledge base of cultural history in Indonesia. The interaction between Javanese and Chinese in Lasem experienced three phases: the Zheng He period, the Yellow War period, and the 20th century. Relations between Javanese and Chinese had been peaceful and harmonious until now. In the middle of the 18th century, there were incidents of violence against ethnic Chinese carried out by the company. This event led to the strengthening of relations between Java and China. The collaboration between the two became a momentous event that the Lasem residents could not forget. Harmonious life in Lasem was not only seen in batik. Still, it was also seen in the daily life of the Lasem people, such as togetherness in celebrations, religious rituals, or family rituals. There were three research questions: What was the process of acculturation in Lasem? What cultural elements underwent acculturation, and what were the results of acculturation? The research applied a qualitative narrative method by collecting data from the literature, interviewing cultural observers, observing, and analyzing. The research discussed the results of acculturation in Lasem in several forms of culture, namely in language, architecture, batik, and rituals. The results of the research indicate that harmonious inter-ethnic life in Lasem can embrace all Indonesian citizens in revive the spirit harmoniously.

In this article an attempt is made to comprehend the possibilities of applying acculturation approaches to the description of the history of scientific work, scientific societies in Turkestan, as well as joint activities of Russian orientalists and local local historians — “antiquity lovers” in the study of history, archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, cultural heritage of the peoples of Central Asia in the late 19th — early 20th centuries. The article deals with how the traditions of collecting and gathering antiquities among the local population of Turkestan under the influence of the emerging socio-cultural and scientific environment, represented by Russian orientalists, gradually acquired its scientific form. In particular, this contributed to the involvement of local local historians in the scientific study of the region, their mastering of techniques and methods of scientific work with sources and archaeological artifacts, their participation in one of the first and significant scientific societies of Turkestan — Turkestan Circle of Amateurs of Archaeology (TKLA). Involvement of scientific literature and rethinking of archival sources allow us to trace how under the influence of Russian orientalists and “big science” the attitude of local local local historians to antiquities changed, and they came to realize the necessity of its study, careful preservation and the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the peoples of Central Asia. At the same time, using acculturation approaches, one can see that communication and contacts between representatives of two different ethno-cultural and social groups had a great influence on each other, contributing to scientific and moral transformations. What moved local local historians when they participated in scientific activities? How significant was the influence of acculturation and do acculturation approaches to the history of Turkestan “work” in the study and development of this problem? Local local historians, cooperating with Russian orientalists in the socio-cultural field, contributed to laying the foundations of national archeology, establishment of archeological research, formation of the first numismatic and manuscript collections, provided invaluable assistance to Russian orientalists in the study of local topography, ethnography, history and culture of the peoples of Central Asia. Methodological basis of the study is the concept of acculturation.

One of the most controversial issues in Russian history is the question of the territorial growth of our state. For a long time there were two mutually exclusive approaches in historical science. The first is that the annexation of new territories was the result, for the most part, of their conquests. The second — the entry of “colonies” into the empire was generally peaceful in nature and the driving force behind this process was economic development. The article analyzes the processes of acculturation that took place on two frontiers of the Russian state: in the European North and in Central Asia. The methodological basis of the study is the concept of acculturation. The main results of the study are the comparison of these processes on the example of a comparison of two regions. It is noted that, despite the significant difference in the period of interaction between different cultures in these regions, there are a number of similarities in the processes of acculturation. Also, positive results of acculturation were revealed.

Throughout history, communication has taken place through various communication channels and processes, such as trade, traffic, people’s migration, folklore, and often through military conflicts. They led to numerous fundamental acculturation changes. Every kind of communication and exchange involved the transmission of information and the diffusion of cultural elements, such as ideas and ideology, inventions and innovations. Primary, and at the same time, the best mediator for communication is the language. The language, with all the found ways of fixing in tangible symbols, falls into the prehistory of what is now called the communication system. By creating an alphabet, and thus the possibility of written communication, conditions have been created for connecting and socializing people on a civilized scale. Starting with Johan Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing technique, that is, the civilization of the letter, the application of the printing machine, begins with a new culture that was developed by finding new communication channels (telegraph, telephone, radio, gramophone records, film, television, satellites, computers, the Internet). So that new inventions, especially in the field of digital electronics, are not waiting for centuries but are available in a very short time. It all enables transcontinental transmission, making the world truly become a "global village" (McLuhan), while culture receives a planetary character.

AbstractThis article examines the emergence of the Ḥusaynī sayyids as key facilitators of the Mongols’ acculturation to Islamo-Persianate society and traces the expansion of their influence at imperial courts through the seventeenth century. Previous scholarship has emphasized the pivotal role of figures like Rashīduddīn Hamadānī in brokering reciprocal processes of acculturation from the empire's centre. This study builds on such work by shifting the focus to Yazd, a provincial city. It explores the evolving and unique role of Yazdī sayyids in facilitating such processes as they fashioned new patronage networks at court and reconfigured the urban morphology of Yazd. Furthermore, using local histories alongside universal ones, this study explores narrative strategies by which Yazdī authors, writing after the Mongol period, commemorated the sayyids’ emergence. It situates these writings in the context of larger transformations that affected relations between provincial elites and the imperial centre throughout these periods.

The existence of different cultures gives birth to different architectural styles. When two or more cultures meet, cultural acculturation occurs in the architecture of the building, or in several architectural elements, or in the entire building. Acculturation is a social process that arises when a group of people from a culture combines elements of a foreign culture, so that they can be accepted and processed into their own culture without causing a loss of their original cultural personality. One area in Indonesia that can be said to have a long history and culture is the city of Palembang. Palembang was famous from the time of the Sriwijaya Kingdom to the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate and was synonymous with a business economy that used sea routes. It is not surprising that the creation of cultural acculturation is a natural thing.Examples of the historical heritage of the city of Palembang which experienced acculturation or architectural mixing can be seen from houses of worship and residential buildings, namely the Palembang Grand Mosque (Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jayo Wikramo Grand Mosque), the Cheng Ho Mosque (Al Islam Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque Sriwijaya Palembang), and the House Limas (traditional house of South Sumatra). The article explores the history of Jewish settlement in Hungary over a period of roughly one hundred years. It starts with the turn of the nineteenth century which saw several waves of Jewish immigration in Hungary and was the first important stage of mutual acculturation of the urban societies and Jewish communities. The analysis of this period is essential for the understanding of urban settlement, the subsequent integration, and the controversial processes of assimilation/dissimilation and intra-urban spatial segregation. The second part of the article offers a case study on Debrecen tracing the initial steps of settlement, housing conditions and residence segregation, neighborhood relations, family structure and residence patterns of Jewish families as well as the spatial layout of the established Jewish ritual and community institutions. The closing part of the study strives to reconsider the research methodology on issues of integration, acculturation, and urban segregation based on the findings and resources of the Geoinformatic Social History Database of Debrecen (GISHDD). On the whole, the study seeks to provide a way to rethink the interpretations of the birth of the modern Hungarian nation, as well as processes of acculturation/integration, segregation, and cooperation of ethnic communities in the nineteenth century.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the comparative acculturation of Islam and Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, within Balinese culture throughout Bali's history. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with a historical approach, this research conducted a thorough literature review encompassing history, religion, and culture. Data were gathered from historical sources and pertinent literature, with comparative analysis utilized to scrutinize these materials. The findings uncovered that the Balinese community, characterized by both closed and open cultural traits, embraced the arrival of Islam and Christianity in a harmonious manner. Both religions successfully assimilated into Balinese culture, predominantly shaped by Hindu teachings. Since Islam's introduction in the 15th century and Christianity's in the 20th century, diverse forms of acculturation have emerged, particularly evident in places of worship like mosques and churches. Despite initial resistance from rulers and the community, the acculturation process persisted. The study concluded that the integration of Islam and Christianity significantly influenced the contemporary image of Balinese culture, illustrating a continuous acculturation process throughout Bali's history.
