This dissertation is a qualitative investigation into international postdoctoral employment in life science and engineering fields at universities in the United States and United Kingdom. Data were gathered through 49 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with international postdocs, faculty members who have supervised international postdocs from abroad at two universities in the US and two universities in the UK. The number of postdoctoral appointments has increased dramatically over the past decade, as has the share of these appointees who come from aboard. Yet few studies have investigated what is underlying this growing trend. By examining interactions between structure and agency at local, global and national levels, this study explored the roles that international postdocs play in academic production and the process by which they become mobile. Theory on globalization, higher education policy and models of academic production guide this study. Findings show that international postdocs are becoming scientific employees, rather than trainees, who are incorporated into capitalist modes of academic production as low-cost, high-yield scientific workers. Universities and individual faculty members seek international postdocs because of their contributions to research production; however, few postdocs have the opportunity to move into tenure-tracked faculty jobs. For international postdocs, becoming mobile is an individual process that is often constructed by individuals who negotiate home country academic policies in a global academic market. Mobility is a multi-stage process that begins with the potential to become mobile and is realized by actual mobility, which occurs through a transnational space produced by international journals that define global science.

It has been widely documented that migrant labourers have made great contributions to the urban economy of China; as well, the explosive growth of rural-urban migrants has generated several "migration problems," such as growing social inequality in urban China. It is widely reported that a large number of migrants have returned to their places of origin, after several years of "urban life," and this trend has been accelerated after the global economic crisis after 2008. Consequently, the large number of return migrants have created many problems in the cities, such as labour shortage in the manufacturing industry, and also posed a huge challenge to the rural areas in the resettlement of these returnees. In sum, to understand both the migrants in destination cities and return migrants in their places of origin is of great importance for both urban and rural development in China. The research so far, on the understanding of migrants' behaviour and labour market outcomes in a multi-phased migration process, seems highly controversial and therefore, insufficient. This study, based on migrant survey data collected in Fujian Province, and return migrant interview data collected in Sichuan and Jiangxi Provinces, explores migrant labour market outcomes in the cities, as well as their geographical differentiation; migrant return intentions, and their gender differentiations; return behaviour and the resettlement situations of actual returnees. The results show that the multi-phased migration process of rural migrants in China is synthetically shaped by macro, meso, and micro factors, and by the interactions between these factors. To be more specific, findings of this study indicate that migrant labour markets in urban China are largely geographically differentiated according to several regional characteristics. The study also finds that a large proportion of rural-urban migrants intends to return to their places of origin. As well, their return intentions are significantly gender-differentiated. Finally, the resettlement situations of return migrants are closely connected to their migration experience.

Since 1997, the University of Saskatchewan Library has used “subject pages” to highlight key library resources. When Springshare announced it was launching LibGuides v2, a project team was assembled to transition a mixture of locally produced guides and guides created with the original LibGuides v1 software. This article synthesizes best practices for LibGuides found in the literature, outlines our best intentions in the migration process, and shares what actually transpired after considering factors such as technical challenges and institutional culture. We hope other academic libraries can learn from our experience and make decisions that suit their institution best.

Control of separation processes which occur at solid-liquid interfaces can be achieved by understanding the interactions which occur at these interfaces. Because of its many desirable bulk characteristics, silica is the solid support of choice for many separation applications. Utilizing various differential migration techniques, control of the separation at different silica surfaces was investigated through irreversible chemical modification of the surface, the use of a dynamic modifier, and through physicochemical alteration of the silica surface. A new bonded phase was prepared by reacting γ-(3,4 methylene dioxyphenyl) propyldimethylchlorosilane--synthesized from safrole and dimethylchlorosilane--with porous silica yielding a non-traditional bonded phase which maintained some similarity with traditional alkyl bonded phases while also possessing distinct differences. Through the use of diagnostic chromatography this surface was shown to demonstrate unique selectivity towards polar analytes when compared with an octyl and phenyl surface under the same solvation conditions. A thermal study utilizing diagnostic chromatography was also used to demonstrate the impact of orientation on retention at this surface. The large scale separation of C₆₀ and C₇₀ was accomplished using a batch process utilizing a traditional bonded phase under normal phase condiitons. Both the kinetics and thermodynamics of the separation were improved through the addition of a dynamic modifier to the running solvent. Macroscopic quantities of pure C₆₀ and C₇₀ are readily obtained using this approach. Control of electroosmotic flow in silica capillaries was demonstrated by chemically tailoring the surface with a series of novel silane modifiers. Although changes in electroosmotic flow velocity were observed, the ultimate goal of flow reversal was not achieved. Finally, a new ISRP surface was prepared by monoatomic oxygen treatment of large (63-90μm) irregularly shaped modified silica particles. This new ISRP was evaluated to determine if the more technically demanding but practically useful treatment of high efficiency particles for use in direct injection HPLC should be pursued.

Academic achievement and educational expectations as a function of parental absence were examined among 268 newly immigrant elementary, middle, and high-school students from Spanish-speaking countries. Data collected as part of a longitudinal study of adaptation and achievement in newly immigrant students were analyzed. Participants had varying experiences with parental absence, in terms of length of absence, gender of absent parent, and reason for absence. Reasons for parental absence included parental divorce, parental death, and serial migration, a cause unique to immigrant children. Students who experienced parental absence reported lower educational expectations. Students who experienced the death of a parent had lower achievement scores and lower expectations than students who did not experience parental death. Prolonged absence was also important, with students who experienced parental absence for more than one year performing worse than students who had minimal parental separation. In addition, boys who experienced parental absence because of serial migration performed worse academically than boys who did not have this occurrence. Educational expectations were reduced among students who experienced parental absence as a result of the migratory process, especially for younger students. The extent to which parental absence related to achievement and expectations through potential mediating factors, such as economic hardship, perceived school support, and parental school involvement was assessed with structural equation modeling. Overall, the model was able to explain some of the relationship between parental absence and the academic achievement and educational expectations of immigrant students from Spanish-speaking countries.

Site selection, and the means to access specific sites, is a keystone of parasitology. I evaluated migration and site selection behaviours of metacercariae of two congeneric species of strigeoid trematode throughout growth and encystment phases in the fathead minnow. Results showed that pre-encystment stages of Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilus migrate along specific neural tracts to access sites in the optic lobes of the brain. Conversely, pre-encystment stages of Ornithodiplostomum sp. migrate via direct penetration, or via the vascular system to access visceral organs, especially the liver. Remarkably, both species have a bi-phasic pattern of development, with growth and encystment occurring in unique sites. Finally, I examined patterns of rodlet cell proliferation and maturation in response to growth and encystment phases of O. ptychocheilus. Cell densities were low (<11/mm2) in brain tissue adjacent to 1 and 2 week old metacercaria, but peaked to approximately 210/mm2 at 6 weeks. These results shed new light on the potential function of these enigmatic cells.

The Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area became the fastest growing Puerto Rican population since 1980. While the literature has grown regarding Orlando's Puerto Rican community, no works deeply analyze the push and pull factors that led to the mass migration of Puerto Ricans to Central Florida. In fact, it was the combination of deteriorating economies in both Puerto Rico and New York City (the two largest concentrations of Puerto Ricans in the United States) and the rise of employment opportunities and cheap cost of living in Central Florida that attract Puerto Ricans from the island the diaspora to the region. Furthermore, Puerto Ricans who migrated to the region established a support network that further facilitated future migration and created a Puerto Rican community in the region. This study uses the combination of primary sources including government document (e.g. U.S. Censuses, Orange County land deeds, etc.), local and nation newspapers, and oral histories from Puerto Ricans living in Central Florida since the early 1980s to explain the process in which Puerto Ricans formed their identity in Orlando since 1980. The result is a history of the Puerto Rican migration to Central Florida and the roots of Orlando's Puerto Rican community.

Economic growth and immigration are important issues to individuals and governments alike. This paper looks at previous research on the topic of how migration affects growth and finds that most research finds that immigrants increase growth in at least the long run. First global or widely applicable research is discussed, then the paper focuses on the European Union as its data availability and uniform open migration policy lend it to a panel regression analysis. Three models are estimated using World Bank World Development Indicators data from 1990 to 2009 for all 28 current EU member states. The models are largely inconclusive, with the only significant result for the relationship between the stock of international immigrants and real GDP per capita growth being negative and coming from Model 1. However, in Model 1 domestic investment was also significant with a negative impact on real GDP per capita. With no clear answer to the question of how immigration affects growth, the clash between the EU governing body which uses open migration policy to promote growth and anti-immigration political parties in EU member states that see immigration as harming native citizens’ job prospects seems likely to continue.

International migration is an old phenomenon caused by many factors divided into push and pull factors. However, there is no enough coverage on the perceptions of the labour migrants. Although there is a vast body of writing on migration, this study delves into the experiential perceptions of academic labour migrants at Rhodes University. These academic labour migrants include professors, lecturers, researchers and postdoctoral research fellows. The study took a qualitative approach to document the experiential perceptions of academic labour migrants at Rhodes University. In-depth interviews were conducted with twelve respondents, to analyse how academic labour migrants perceive South Africa’s changing visa policies in the context of regional integration and development, migration networks and choice, host-migrant relations. The study is underpinned by Probsting’s (2015) concept of "spatial fix" in the context of capitalism and migration, to locate the positionality of academic labour migrants within a capitalist society. The study established that the increase in skilled labour migration is relatively linked to the expansion of capitalism. Based on the perceptions of the respondents, the study concluded that migration is inherently vital in providing cheap labour for capitalists. It established that changing visa policies is not without problems. Historical dispositions of the apartheid system, conflicting domestic versus international imperatives, neo-liberal policies and the widely condemned results of capitalism as an imperialist system and other factors influence migration management in South Africa.

Bull trout are a species of fish native to the coldwater mountain streams of Alberta. Because this species is of special conservation concern and displays finely dissected population structure, it is well suited as a model species to test the utility of versatile conservation genetics tools. One such tool, a genetic clustering method, was used to discern the hierarchical population structure of bull trout in the core of their range in South-West Alberta. The method also revealed patterns of gene flow by way of assignment tests. Populations defined by this method were then used as reference populations for mixed-migrant assignment tests, revealing that clustering method-defined populations may be more suitable for such tests rather than traditional approaches that define reference populations by sampling location. Combined with spatial data a posteriori, assignment tests had additional utility of discerning spatial scale of movement for juvenile and adult salmonids. This technique provided further evidence that assignment tests may be powerful indirect tools for evaluating migration, and that longrange inter-stream dispersal in juvenile salmonid fish may be more common than previously assumed.

This work addresses to what extent businesses in the United States and the European Union have a moral obligation to participate in social integration processes in areas where they operate with the use of migrant laborers. It begins with the presupposition that a common framework as to what constitutes ethical behavior in business is needed and beneficial. It argues that the very industry that creates a need for migrant labor ought to also be involved in merging this labor successfully into the existing community and specifies that a discourse on business ethics and migration is gravely needed. This must be one that considers how businesses can become more engaged in resolving the social issues that arise both for the migrants and for the local community in which the businesses operate. The purpose would be to fill a social and humanitarian need that government alone cannot. More importantly, it will be to exercise beneficence and display responsible and sincere corporate citizenship. It is claimed that businesses that fail to encourage and participate in integration processes display a moral flaw. Cosmopolitan business ethics are proposed as a way to look at ethical business conduct and it is claimed that businesses that act as cosmopolitan citizens are morally praiseworthy.

The present master thesis is an exploratory qualitative study in academic libraries regarding the transition from the integrated library systems to the next generation integrated library systems or library services platforms and the potential implications in their internal workflows. Nowadays, libraries all over the world are facing up with a number of challenges in terms of acquiring, describing and making available to the public all the resources, both printed and electronic, they manage. In particular, the academic libraries have more reasons to wish to fulfill their users’ needs since the majority of them use the library sources more and more for scientific research and educational purposes.In this study we attempt to explore the phenomenon in the globe using the available literature and to identify the implications in libraries’ workflows and the possible future developments. Moreover, through observation and semi-structured interviews we try to identify the current developments in the Greek context regarding the adoption of next ILS and possible implications in their workflows. Finally, we attempt a comparison between the Greek situation and the international one.

La migration des étudiants marocains, notamment vers la France, reflète une volonté de surmonter les défis d’un marché du travail local souvent considéré comme défavorable aux diplômés marocains. Face à ces contraintes, ces étudiants choisissent une formation académique à l’étranger, particulièrement en France, dans l’espoir d’acquérir des compétences et une reconnaissance internationale susceptibles d’améliorer leurs perspectives professionnelles. Cependant, cette dynamique soulève la question de savoir dans quelle mesure un séjour en France, qu’il soit purement académique ou enrichi par une expérience professionnelle, contribue efficacement à leur employabilité et à leur intégration sur le marché local à leur retour. C’est dans ce cadre que s’inscrit cette recherche doctorale, qui explore le devenir professionnel des diplômés marocains ayant étudié en France avant de retourner au Maroc. Elle analyse leurs motivations, leurs expériences de retour et l’impact de cette migration sur leur intégration professionnelle. De plus, elle examine les intentions de retour des étudiants marocains encore en formation en France, en lien avec leurs projets post-études. Enfin, l’étude s’intéresse aux préférences des employeurs marocains pour les diplômés formés en France, afin de mieux comprendre l’adéquation entre les aspirations des étudiants et les attentes du marché marocain. Pour répondre à ces objectifs, la méthodologie adoptée repose sur l’analyse approfondie de données issues de trois enquêtes spécialement conçues pour cette étude. L’emploi combiné de méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives, incluant notamment l’analyse de discours, a enrichi la compréhension des dynamiques liées à l’employabilité des diplômés marocains. Les résultats obtenus révèlent que les perceptions individuelles des étudiants concernant les opportunités professionnelles dans leur domaine d’études et qualifications, tant dans le pays d’accueil que dans le pays d’origine, jouent un rôle déterminant dans leur décision de retourner au Maroc après leurs études. Le niveau d’attachement simultané au pays d’accueil et au pays d’origine influence également de manière notable les choix post-études. Par ailleurs, l’expérience professionnelle acquise en France après les études améliore significativement l’employabilité des diplômés, indépendamment de leur filière d’études. Toutefois, des disparités subsistent : les diplômés des autre sciences humaines et sociales (lettres , etc.) et des sciences fondamentales rencontrent davantage de difficultés de réintégration, tandis que ceux issus des filières d’économie, de gestion et d’ingénierie bénéficient d’une insertion professionnelle plus fluide au Maroc. Enfin, l’étude met en évidence l’importance des parcours académiques, des trajectoires professionnelles et des caractéristiques individuelles dans la réussite et l’employabilité des diplômés sur le marché du travail marocain. Elle démontre es employeurs marocains accordent une grande valeur aux diplômes universitaires obtenus en France, ainsi qu’à l’expérience professionnelle acquise dans ce pays. Cependant, des disparités dans les pratiques de recrutement sont observées, influencées par des éléments tels que le mode de gestion des entreprises (familial ou non) et la nature des relations avec les partenaires et clients (locaux ou internationaux). Ces constats révèlent la complexité des interactions entre les parcours internationaux des diplômés et les spécificités du marché local, offrant une perspective globale sur les défis de l’employabilité au Maroc
The migration of Moroccan students, particularly to France, reflects a desire to overcome the challenges posed by a local labor market often considered unfavorable to Moroccan graduates. Faced with these constraints, students opt for academic training abroad, especially in France, in the hope of acquiring skills and international recognition likely to improve their professional prospects. However, this dynamic raises the question of how a stay in France, whether purely academic or enriched by professional experience, effectively contributes to their employability and reintegration into the local labor market upon their return. This doctoral research is set within this framework and explores the professional trajectories of Moroccan graduates who studied in France before returning to Morocco. It analyzes their motivations, return experiences, and the impact of this migration on their professional integration. Additionally, it examines the return intentions of Moroccan students still in training in France, in connection with their post-graduation plans. Finally, the study investigates the preferences of Moroccan employers for graduates trained in France, aiming to better understand the alignment between students’ aspirations and the needs of the Moroccan labor market. To achieve these objectives, the methodology is based on an in-depth analysis of data from three surveys specifically designed for this study. The combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, including discourse analysis, has enriched the understanding of the dynamics related to the employability of Moroccan graduates. The results reveal that students’ individual perceptions of job opportunities in their field of study and qualifications, both in the host and home countries, play a crucial role in their decision to return to Morocco after studying abroad. Furthermore, the simultaneous attachment to both the host and home countries significantly influences their post-graduation choices. Professional experience acquired in France after graduation also significantly enhances the employability of Moroccan graduates, regardless of their field of study. However, disparities persist: graduates from fields such as humanities, social sciences (literature, etc.), and pure sciences face greater reintegration challenges compared to those in economics, management, and engineering, who experience smoother professional integration in Morocco. Finally, the study highlights the importance of academic backgrounds, professional trajectories, and individual characteristics in the success and employability of graduates in the Moroccan labor market. It also demonstrates that Moroccan employers highly value university degrees obtained in France, as well as the professional experience gained in the country. However, disparities in recruitment practices are observed, influenced by factors such as the type of company management (family-owned or not) and the nature of relationships with partners and clients (local or international). These findings underscore the complexity of the interactions between the international trajectories of graduates and the specificities of the local labor market, offering a comprehensive perspective on the challenges of employability in Morocco

The persistence of socioeconomic outcomes across generations acts as a barrier to a society's ability to exploit its resources efficiently. In order to derive policy measures which aim at accelerating intergenerational mobility, we review the existent body of research on the causes, effects and the measurement of intergenerational mobility. We also present recent empirical works which study intergenerational mobility in Europe, around the Globe, and its relevance for economic growth. We recommend four policy measures to reduce the negative impacts of intergenerational persistence in economic outcomes: universal and high-quality child care and pre-school programs; later school tracking and increased access to vocational training to reduce skill mismatch and facilitate technological development; integration programs for migrants; and simultaneous investment in schooling and later social security programs.

International workers are a vulnerable population within the hospitality industry. Their challenges, and needs have an impact on productivity, loyalty and satisfaction of international workers towards the organizations that employ them. The social and cultural impacts of labor migration are felt in their new environment by both domestic and immigrant populations. It is important to understand international workers' acculturation process in order to provide them with tools necessary to succeed; it is also important to create responsible practices that translate into positive migration outcomes for both domestic and foreign populations. This study collected data on the motivations, processes, challenges, and alternatives experienced by international workers when relocating to the United States. It documents the cultural adaptation process followed by international workers laboring in the hospitality industry, and based on the data collected from interviewers' responses, it creates new constructs intended to assist hospitality organizations in their operations. By providing tools to support international workers in the acculturation process, and by providing new understandings of the cultural adaptation process undertaken by international workers when relocating, it is plausible to convert a challenge and limitation into an opportunity for hospitality organizations to create value out of their international human capital.

The wind band provides an outlet for composers to use their platform to reach performers, enlighten audiences, and heal communities. This document is an analysis of three composers' approach to incorporate social consciousness in their wind band music. Adam Schoenberg, Omar Thomas, and Frank Ticheli work with specific social justice issues to respond to specific events, allowing them to reach and empower performers and audiences, to heal, thrive and build past these events. The chapters contain each composer's biographical information, then provide detailed information of the three works; background and cursory information, the composer's use and understanding of the social justice issue and an extensive analysis of each work. The composers use compositional design techniques to convey their intent to share a specific message. This document provides insight through each composer's techniques and thought processes, providing a better understanding of the works. The knowledge gained will help conductors and performers understand social consciousness in wind band music.

This thesis makes two related arguments regarding the academic field of migration and refugee studies (MARS) and the control of migration by UK state agencies. The first, and more empirical one, is that the former facilitated the latter: the field’s members provided symbolic, technical, and pedagogic assistance to two non-departmental public bodies in controlling migration. The second, and more theoretical, argument of this thesis is that MARS facilitated migration control because of culture, power, and structure. It is through the field’s implication in the coercion of its human subjects by UK state agencies that MARS academics a) answered their calling, b) assisted class rule as ideologists, and c) separated sacred and profane by policing endogamy. The introduction describes the existing literature on the relationship between MARS and migration control. The consensus is that the former facilitated the latter. However, these studies fail to provide detailed accounts of the ways in which it did so. Chapter One defines the elements of my more empirical argument: MARS and migration control. An historical narrative outlines the institutional development of the field since its beginnings in the early 1980s. Then a new model for understanding migration control – i.e., migrant CODAR – is described. Chapter Two uses this model to trace the actor network through which MARS academics facilitated the restriction of their human subjects’ mobility by the UK state agencies of the Advisory Panel on Country Information and the Migration Advisory Committee. Chapters Three, Four, and Five use Weberian, Marxist, and Durkheimian anthropological approaches (respectively) to explain the implication of MARS and migration control that is described in Chapters One and Two. Finally, the conclusion of the thesis discusses its contributions to both more particular (i.e., the literature surveyed in the introduction on MARS and migration control) and more general (i.e., anthropology) scholarly fields.

The dissertation investigates the development of higher education in Africa and points to the phenomenon of migration of African academics to destinations overseas and more recently to South Africa. The research interest derives from South Africa's unique position on the continent to attract academics from overseas including African academics who left their home country. Therefore South Africa's universities play a significant role in return migration of these academics to the continent. This research follows an explorative approach that aims to capture the trajectories of African academics in present day South Africa. The quantitative research provides a picture of the origin and proportion of African academics at South African universities while the qualitative research explores the trajectories of eleven African academics who were at the time of the study employed at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. The research question focuses on the question 'Why are academics from other African countries than South Africa leaving their country of origin?' and 'What motivates African academics to come to South Africa?' Among other, the research also uncovers whether academics who once immigrated to South Africa have intentions to return to their country of origin. The core part of the dissertation contains the presentation of the findings of in-depth interviews with eleven academics from the University of Cape Town. The research also includes the analysis of all 23 South African universities for the year 2011by accessing information from the database of HEDA (Higher Education Data Analyser) with the assistance of the Institution of Planning Department (IPD) of UCT. Here the proportion of academics coming from other African countries, are presented, for the year 2011. Drawing from the literature on higher education in Africa as well as from the interviews with eleven academics, the dissertation illustrates that in regard to the 'brain drain' of African academics, the overall post 1980s imposed neo-liberal regulations set by the World Bank and IMF which channelled public spending and foreign capital towards primary and secondary education, was an important factor leading to the degradation of African universities and consequently contributed to the migration of African academics. The trajectories of the academics illustrate that the majority of the academics left their country of origin for postgraduate studies overseas or in South Africa. However, after the completion of their studies these academics were eager to build an academic career in Africa, whereby South Africa of them became the preferred destinations. Return migration to the country of origin is in most cases only considered after retirement. Nevertheless, they are all engaged in building relationships to institutions or civic organisations in their home country as well as enabling postgraduate students from their home country to come to South Africa for further studies The dissertation suggest further research to examine to what extent these 'knowledge exchanges' and 'educational transfers' between academic diaspora in South Africa and other African countries are fertile for development in the country of origin and in which ways, universities and academics, in their role as 'ideological leader' can contribute to socio-economic and cultural development by establishing sustainable of relationships which are of mutual benefit.

For some years now, African football labour migration has been of academic and public concern. With a number of notable exceptions, much of the existing academic research on African football migration has been framed in terms of its macro-level structural determinants. This thesis specifically concentrates on the role of football academies in the Ghanaian football migration industry, and seeks to position agency and the ways that it is employed to navigate through the structural constraints that young players encounter as part of their experience of entering, living in and exiting football academies. The overarching research question is whether internal migration to a football academy features as a household livelihood strategy for international migration. Drawing on nine months of multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork in Ghana, three specific, hitherto unexplored aspects of African football migration are addressed: 1) the role of the family in processes of athletic relocation; 2) the movement of young players into academies as a process of internal migration; and 3) the experiences of international immobility of Ghanaian academy players. To tackle this research question and related caveats, and to capture the multiplicity and complexity involved with academy players' internal migration, Mabogunje's (1970) migration system theory is reworked to an Integrated migration model, which is used as a heuristic framework to analyse the ways in which the various stages of football players' internal migration trajectory are experienced and navigated by players and their family members. It is demonstrated that a meso-level approach, that accords significance to the family as a unit of analysis, provides a unique insight into the social processes that underpin the mobility and immobility of young Ghanaian football players, and reveals that the role of football academies in the migration of African football players is a complex and dynamic reality, informed by a series of social forces.

The research questions of this thesis, “Migrating Through Currere: A Narrative Inquiry Into the Experience of Being a Canadian Teacher,” are three-fold: What is the experience of being a Canadian teacher? How do personal and trans/national migration histories influence this experience? How does being a teacher of English-as-a-Second/Additional- Language of adult immigrant and refugee students affect this experience? The aim of this thesis is to better understand how auto/biographical migration stories are connected to a pedagogical life and how this connection influences a teaching praxis. The following quotation sets the teacher in migration: “What is the experience of being…a stranger in a land not one’s own” (Pinar, 1975a, p. 399)? Curriculum reconceptualist theory asks the teacher to engage in processes of self-reflexivity in social, historical, and pedagogical contexts. The experience of being a Canadian teacher is reflected in my family’s and others’ migration stories during the first wave of migration of immigrants to Alberta. Four narratives of my own arose out of self-reflection on topics of identity, culture, home, location, and ethnicity. Each narrative is developed using William F. Pinar’s (1975a) method of currere. The narratives are interspersed throughout the thesis from the regressive to the synthetical moments of currere; they are juxtaposed against autobiographies written by first and second generation Canadians. A review of the literature illuminates the works of educational philosophers such as Maxine Greene and contemporary curriculum scholars including Ted T. Aoki, Dwayne Huebner, Janet L. Miller, Leah Fowler, Erika Hasebe-Ludt, and Cynthia Chambers, in addition to Pinar. The inquiry reveals how a historical return to the self can inform the teacher of the meaning of the teaching experience found in the pedagogical, lived, and historical v circumstances of the self and other. A new awareness of the teaching self emerges in the foreign and familiar of the classroom. Tensions found in dichotomies of language, culture, and ethnicity become generative spaces to reflect on the experience; home becomes a portal through which the teacher views the world with empathy. The teacher lives perceptively in a culturally diverse classroom and amongst the complexities of another’s life circumstances.

Narrow riparian woodlands along non-perennial streams have made it possible for vervet monkeys to penetrate the semi-arid karoo ecosystem of South Africa, while artificial water points have more recently allowed these populations to colonize much more marginal habitat away from natural water sources. In order to determine the sequelae of life in these narrow, linear woodlands for historically 'natural' populations, I determined the size of troops in relation to their reliance on natural and artificial water sources and collected detailed data from two river-centred troops on activity, diet and ranging behaviour over an annual cycle. These data indicate that river-centred troops were distinctive primarily for their large group sizes and, consequently, their large adult cohorts, and the extent of home range overlap in what is regarded as a territorial species. While large group size carried the corollary of increased day journey length and longer estimated interbirth intervals, there was little other indication of ecological stress. Specifically, the rate of predation appears to be lower than observed at other sites. Predation encounters here, encourage the use of predator vigilance rather than influencing the use of space within the habitat. The high density of Acacia karoo, which accounted for a third of annual foraging effort in what was a relatively depauperate floristic habitat, allows for an adequate energy intake for groups of this size. I ascribed the large group size and home range overlap to the inability of groups to undergo fission.

Das Schulregister des Kultusministeriums MIUR verzeichnet, dass mehr als jede/r zehnte aller Schüler/innen in Italien keine italienische Staatsbürgerschaft hat, obwohl sie mehrheitlich dort geboren wurden. Zahlreiche Erhebungen weisen für sie im Vergleich zu den italienischen Mitschülern/innen geringere Italienischkenntnisse und weniger schulischen Erfolg auf. Innerhalb dieser explorativen Feldforschung haben Einzelinterviews mit 121 Schülern/innen (5.-8. Klasse) in Turiner Schulen und mit 26 Eltern, sowie die Auswertung von 141 an 27 Italienisch- und Herkunftsprachlehrer/innen verteilten Fragebögen ergeben, dass viele Schüler/innen "zweisprachige Natives" sind, da sie mit Italienisch und einer anderen Sprache aufwachsen. Dieser Polyglottismus, den die Interviewten sehr positiv bewerteten, findet jedoch in der Schulpraxis keine Entsprechung: Gezielte Förderung im Italienischen und der Unterricht der Familiensprache sind meist Wunschdenken. In der Kohorte haben die Schüler/innen mit den besten Italienischkenntnissen einen italophonen Elternteil bzw. kamen im Vorschulalter nach Italien und besuchten dort den Kindergarten. Dagegen sind, wie auch bei den INVALSI-Tests, die in Italien geborenen und die dann die Krippe besuchten, leicht benachteiligt. Was die Familiensprache angeht, verbessert ihr Erlernen die Kompetenzen darin, ohne dem Italienischen zu schaden: Im Gegenteil. Diese Ergebnisse bestätigen die wichtige Rolle der "anderen" Sprache für einen gelungen Spracherwerb. Das MIUR sollte also sein Schulregister mit Sprachdaten ergänzen, um die Curricula im Sinn der EU-Vorgaben umzuschreiben und den sprachlich heterogenen Klassen gezielte Ressourcen und definierte Vorgehensweisen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Mit geringeren Mitteln, im Vergleich zu den jetzigen Kosten für Herunterstufung, Klassenwiederholung und Schulabbruch würde man Schulerfolg, Chancengerechtigkeit und Mehrsprachigkeit fördern, mit positiven Folgen für den Einzelnen sowie für die Volkswirtschaft.
The Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) student register records that today in Italy more than one out of ten students is not an Italian citizen, although the majority of them were born there. Several statistical surveys indicate that "foreign" students, when compared to native students, show a poorer performance in Italian and in academic achievement. This exploratory fieldwork carried out in schools in Turin (5th to 8th grade) analyzed data obtained through semi-structured interviews with 121 students and 26 parents as well as 141 questionnaires filled in by 27 teachers of Italian and family language. It showed that many students are "bilingual natives", as they grow up acquiring both Italian and another language; however, despite the fact that the interviewees rate polyglottism positively, schools don't usually offer targeted support in either language. Within the cohort the broadest range of competences in Italian are found first among those with an Italian-speaking parent, then among those who arrived in Italy at pre-school age attending kindergarten there; this latter group shows higher competences than those born in Italy attending nursery there, as also in the INVALSI tests. As far as family language is concerned, data illustrate that its teaching increases its competences without affecting those in Italian: quite the opposite in fact. These results confirm the remarkable role played by the "other" language in successful language education. MIUR is therefore called upon to include also linguistic data in its student register, so as to redefine its curricula according to EU Guidelines, and to identify specific procedures and resources for multilingual classes. This new policy would reduce the current cost of placing students in a lower grade, grade retention and drop-outs, and would promote school success, equal opportunities and multilingualism, with positive consequences both for the individuals and for the national economy.
L'anagrafe studenti del MIUR registra come oggi in Italia più di uno studente su dieci non è cittadino italiano, pur essendo la maggioranza di loro nata in questo paese. Numerose indagini statistiche mostrano come gli allievi "stranieri" presentino, rispetto a quelli italiani, ridotte competenze in italiano e minore successo scolastico. Questa ricerca esplorativa svolta in alcune scuole di Torino (V elementare-III media) ha analizzato dati ottenuti tramite interviste semi-strutturate a 121 studenti e 26 genitori e 141 questionari compilati da 27 insegnanti di italiano e di lingua di famiglia. Da essa è emerso che molti studenti sono "nativi bilingui", poiché crescono usando l'italiano e un'altra lingua. Questo poliglottismo, valutato dagli intervistati assai positivamente, non si rispecchia però nella prassi scolastica: un supporto mirato in italiano e l'insegnamento della lingua di famiglia sono di regola una chimera. All'interno del campione le più ampie competenze in italiano si trovano fra chi ha un genitore italofono e chi è arrivato in Italia in età prescolare frequentandovi la scuola materna; come constatato anche nei test INVALSI, chi è nato in Italia e vi ha frequentato l'asilo nido è leggermente svantaggiato. Rispetto alla lingua di famiglia risulta che il suo studio porta a migliori competenze in essa, senza nuocere all'italiano: anzi. Emerge quindi il ruolo significativo della lingua "altra" per un'educazione linguistica efficace. L'invito al MIUR è quindi di integrare la propria anagrafe con dati linguistici, così da ridefinire i propri curricula secondo le Linee Guida Comunitarie, individuando procedure e risorse specifiche per le classi multilingui. Con un investimento ridotto, paragonato con il costo attuale dato da retrocessioni, ripetenze e abbandono scolastico, si riuscirebbe a sostenere il successo scolastico, le pari opportunità e il plurilinguismo, con conseguenze positive per i singoli e per l'economia nazionale.

This study examines the effect of past migration experience on the multiple facets of parent involvement. We run OLS and two-stage least squares regressions on a representative sample of catholic schools in the city of Luanda, Angola. Our results do not suggest a different level of academic involvement by returned migrants. We find, however, that parent level of education, wealth, family composition and school performance are strong predictors of parent involvement. In addition, we find evidence of a quadratic relation of age with most of the dimensions of parent involvement. Gender wise, we show that mothers are significantly more involved with their children in relation to fathers, and that parent involvement is not conditional on child gender, suggesting the nonexistence of a child gender bias.

This Digital/Public History visualization thesis project explores how three factors—Atlantic migration patterns, demographics, and socioeconomic systems—influenced the development of folk music in the southern United States from the 18th century through the 20th century. A large body of written scholarship exists addressing plantation economies, the slave trade, and folk music. Digital technology, however, creates new opportunities for analyzing the geo-temporal aspects contained within the numerous archival resources such as census and migration records, field recordings, economic data, diaries, and other personal records. The written portion of the thesis addresses the historiography, research findings, and the process of creating the visualization product. The digital component employs open-source archives and MapScholar, a visualization tool developed at the University of Virginia, to reveal the spatial dimensions of three distinct regions—The greater Chesapeake (Virginia/North Carolina/), the coastal lowlands and sea islands of the Gullah Corridor (Charleston/Savannah), and Louisiana (New Orleans). The end result is an educational and potential research tool that affords viewers a more dynamic perspective on the relationship between agricultural slave labor, migration patterns, and folk music than is possible with text alone.

in English The diploma Thesis "Trends and Significance of the Migration of Foreign Students mainly from non-EU Countries in the Czech Republic and Europe." discusses the phenomenon of migration for study purposes from non-EU countries (mainly Russia, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina) in the Czech Republic. The percentage of immigrants coming to study in Czech Republic has been growing and it constitutes an important tool for a positive development of the international cooperation. The aim of this work is to describe and analyze, based on the questionnaire method and specialized texts, the reasons for the choice of this type of migration, underling the administrative, economic and social issues that might be involved. Furthermore the objective is to evaluate the participation of qualified foreigners in the Czech labor market as well as to determine, presenting specific cases collected by a qualitative method, the human, cultural and social added value that they might gain by being awarded with an European diploma. Globalisation and international migration can be found among many professions and occupations. Australian universities are employing academics with international experiences, plus international academics with experience of other educational systems. While there is increasing body of research about the experiences of international students in Australian universities, there is limited research concerning experiences of international academics, especially those of Chinese origin. This study explores and documents the experiences of nine Chinese academics working at a regional Australian university. An embedded case study approach enabled an analysis of interview data where the experiences of theses academics were examined in relation to the changing social and political contexts within the People’s Republic of China since 1949 and the HE context in Australia. This study found that these academics began their educational journeys in China with eventual migration to Australia. All nine academics possessed higher education qualifications and a proven research capacity that enabled them gain academic positions at the regional university. Their experiences of the Australian higher education system varied and this demonstrated a range of personal and professional adjustments in order to gain a permanent position in a regional university. Therefore this study contributes to an area where there is little systematic research on Chinese academic migration generally, but more specifically the potential impact of the Chinese academics in Australian institutions.

Both Japan and Taiwan are suffering from serious labor shortage due to the impacts of low birth rate and aging societies. The main purpose of Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) is to transfer technical skills to intern trainees, so as to make international contribution form Japan. Taiwan’s New Southbound Industry-Academia Collaboration Program for International Students emphasizes tailor-made professional skills training and internship in the related industries, as well as offer of high-quality technical and vocational education, industrial chain practices and learning of theories, increasing the employment rate of foreign interns immediately after graduation. Nevertheless, Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program and Taiwan’s New Southbound Industry-Academia Collaboration Program, both for international intern trainees, have been questioned that these foreign technical trainees have been treated as low-pay foreign laborers and suffering exploitation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences in the history, operation, obstacles and trend between Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program and Taiwan’s Industry-Academia Collaboration Program. The paper employs traditional migration theories and viewpoints of scholars and experts to analyze the migration problems and phenomena.
