This thesis reports on an exploration of the career aspirations and expectations of twelve female Aboriginal high school students in two different localities. It considers how cultural identity, racism, schooling, family relationships and employment opportunities influence these students' hopes and ideas. Aboriginal culture gives a prominent position to the Elders in the community and therefore this study also includes their views and the expectations they have for their young people. The research was carried out through a series of interviews. Throughout this study there is an emphasis on the importance of the participants own words and expressions, therefore it includes several quotes to capture their ideas rather than to impose too many interpretations. The participants views were structured within the systems theory framework. This framework was flexible and comprehensive enough to allow the students the option to place an emphasis on whichever areas or influences they felt were the most powerful for them. The family became the most prominent influence. The outcome of this research drew attention to the following issues. There was considerable difference between the two localities and this emphasised the danger in forming generalisations about Aboriginal people. The study also registered the impact of racism upon the students' self perceptions and expectations. Cultural characteristics such as a respect for Elders and a sense of community belonging dominated over concepts of individuality and autonomy. However the participants frequently expressed initiative as well as an awareness of the difference between the Aboriginal and White cultures, and they were often able to deal with this duality constructively when they considered their aspirations. It is recommended that practitioners in the field of careers and counselling should be sensitive to the issues raised in the thesis which can place particular pressure on young Aboriginal clients. Counsellors need to have a good understanding of Aboriginal history over the last two centuries as well as the impact of racism which can permeate the institutions of education and employment. ( The term 'Aboriginal' is used here in its generic sense to include Torres Strait Islanders. )

The study is concerned with the history of black and white women in Australia during the colonial period. Particular emphasis is on the variety of cross-cultural relationships which developed between women during that time. As a starting point, male frontier violence is discussed and compared with the more moderate approach taken by women faced with threatening situations. Among Europeans, women are revealed as being generally less racist than men. This was a significant factor in their ability to forge bonds with black women and occasionally with black men. The way in which contacts with Aborigines were made is explored and the impact of them on the women concerned is assessed, as far as possible from both points of view. Until now, these experiences have been omitted from colonial history, yet I believe they were an important element in racial relations. It will be seen that some of these associations were warm, friendly and satisfying to both sides, and often included a good deal of mutual assistance. Others involved degrees of exploitation. Both are examined in detail, using a variety of sources which include the works of modern Aboriginal writers. This study presents a new aspect of the female experiences which was neglected until the emergence of the feminist historians in the 1960’s. It properly places women, both black and white, within Australian colonial history.

This thesis investigates the social and racial dynamics of life in the West Kimberley between 1944 and 1969. It identifies three groups defined by their racial characteristics which co-existed on the land: full-descent, mixed-descent and Gudia. It argues that despite many people in these different groups being related to each other, their lives followed different trajectories as a result of government policies and laws which defined people by their degree of Aboriginality. These racial categories were reflected in the social and economic relations of full-descent, mixed descent and Gudia people. Coexistence of these groups is analysed by focusing on one extended mixed-descent 'Nygkina' family. During the 1940s, 50s. and 60s, the children of Fulgentius and Phillipena Fraser left their mission haven and entered the world of employment under Gudia management. In 1944, a young 21 year old Spaniard, Francisco Casanova-Rodriguez, ventured to the Kimberley to work as a station hand. Rodriguez crossed paths with the Frasers in 1946 and he married their eldest daughter, Katie, in December of that year. He was accepted into the mixed-descent family, where kindred relationships deepened by virtue of mutual religious belief systems, amidst a life of discrimination and financial hardships. Rodriguez and Katie were devout Catholics and that became the strength of their relationship. An insight into this family's coexistence with Gudia during the twentieth century is extracted from Rodriguez's diaries, oral histories collected from the Fraser family and associates, and from government archival files. With their mission training the Fraser children became subservient employees to Gudia pastoralists and town business people. Rodriguez taught himself his trade as a builder,-and he, too, worked for pastoralists in an industry that was expected to flourish. But the certainty of a profitable sheep industry never eventuated, and by the early 1970s there were no sheep stations operating in the region. Neither were there many Aboriginal people living and working on the stations. Most had relocated to the towns. Full-descent people lived on reserves, while both mixed-descent and Gudia people lived either in their own homes, or in Housing Commission houses.

It has been commonly believed that the Aboriginal rights movement which developed in Australia in the 1960s gained its greatest momentum from activities initiated in the southern states - New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. This thesis argues that such a depiction is incorrect. Based on oral interviews and unpublished personal documents and substantiated by official reports, published commentary and parliamentary debates as well as internal records from Department of Native Affairs, I maintain that between the years of 1958 and 1962 a minor revolution occurred in Brisbane which influenced the direction of Black rights - both locally and nationally - into the following decade. This thesis traces the development of this uprising, and its aftermath. It explores the motivations of a White society which paid lip service to tolerance and social equity while accepting a system which denied Black basic human rights; and identifies the individuals and organisations which overcame obstacles to blaze a trail of resistance which dramatically changed White attitudes and Black lifestyles. The effects of this attack on the status quo were observable on three fronts: in the political arena, in the Brisbane media and in the wider community. The movement for change peaked between May 1961 and February 1962, when representatives of the Queensland government, Department of Native Affairs (DNA), Queensland Labor Party (QLP) and Queensland Police Special Branch conspired to transfer power from a left-wing Black rights organization perceived as a political threat, to one created to perpetuate DNA policy. This study identifies the pivotal role of women - particularly Murri women - as the catalyst which transformed the Brisbane movement from a gaggle of factions divided by antithetical ideologies into a cohesive grouping capable of taking on the forces of oppression in Queensland. I argue that without their leadership, the movement may never have taken off to the extent required to persuade a conservative Queensland public to deliver the affirmative vote to carriage of the 1967 referendum proposal on Black rights.

This thesis examines the reclamation of the 'Blak' body by Indigenous female photo-media artists. The discussion will begin with an examination of photographic representatiors of Indigenous people by the colonising culture and their construction of 'Aboriginality'. The thesis will look at the introduction of Aboriginal artists to the medium of photography and their chronological movement through the decades This will begin with a documentary style approach in the 1960s to an intimate exploration of identity that came into prominence in the 1980s with an explosion of young urban photomedia artists, continuing into the 1990s and beyond. I will be examining the works of four contemporary female artists and the impetus behind their work. The three main artists whose works will be examined are Brenda L. Croft, Destiny Deacon and Rea all of whom have dealt with issues of representation of the 'Blak female body, gender and reclamation of identity. The thesis will examine the works of these artists in relation to the history of representation by the dominant culture. Chapter 6 will look at a new emerging artist, Dianne Jones, who is looking at similar issues as the artists mentioned. This continuing critique of representation by Jones is testimony of the prevailing issues concerning Aboriginal representation

Summary: The thesis focuses on marketing art from the Aboriginal community, Utopia, where the majority of artists, and the best known artists, are women. It documents methods by which the art moves from the community to retail art outlets; it includes detailed documentation of marketing in the retail sector and also includes research into the buying of indigenous art by private buyers. -- Emily Kame Kngwarreye is the best known of the Utopia painters. The study proposes reasons for her success and points to further questions beyond the scope of this study. Problems inherent in criticism and editing of her work are raised and interpreted in the context of the marketplace. -- The original thesis plan did not include detailed discussion about authorship. However, in 1997 the media reported controversy about authorship of a prize-winning work. As such controversy must affect marketing, this topic (as it relates to this artist), was included. -- Although possibilities for improvement in marketing methods have become apparent as a result of this research, areas where further research would be beneficial have also become apparent.

Following Frantz Fanon and Homi Bhaba, the adoption of the white ideological lattice by the Aboriginal author is characterised as the white mask of colonial mimicry. The outcomes of cross-cultural impersonation of the white editor are discussed, with the editorial collaboration viewed as the imposition of stereotyped representations of Aboriginality.

One of the most important social and political issues in Australia is the present and future position of Aborigines in the wider Australian community. Although since the 1967 referendum, Aborigines have achieved equality with other Australians in the eyes of the law in all states but Queensland, in practice, they have not achieved equal status. This is despite the current tolerance of cultural diversity, which is greater than at any time in the past. A central problem in the relationship between Aborigines and other Australians is that of economic self-sufficiency: Aborigines are seen to be largely dependent on the public purse. In the context of the present Aboriginal self-determination policy, the most important problem is how Aborigines can attain a standard of living at the same level as other Australians, without losing their cultural identity.

This thesis examines the ritual life of Warlpiri women in the Central Desert community of Yuendumu. Though there is now a growing literature on the ritual life of Aboriginal women, these works present generalized accounts of women as a category in their ritual activity which obscures the social dynamics and processes that are central to women's religious life. I argue that a fuller understanding of women's ritual life in Warlpiri society in particular and of Aboriginal women's lives more generally is dependent on seeing women as individual social actors. The thesis therefore concentrates on the activities and motivations of individual women in the most common form of women's ceremony at Yuendumu, the yawulyu. The analysis provides access to the complex issues of power and competition among Aboriginal women, and goes a long way to defining the role of women in the ritual life of the community at large. The introductory chapter reviews the literature on women and their religious lives. Chapter two provides an overview of the main Warlpiri religious concepts, in particular of the principal features of the Dreaming and its manifestations and the formal aspects of women's rights and duties that fulfil in the ritual domain. The third chapter describes women's life cycle in terms of their ritual career and argues that women continue their role as nurturers beyond the end of their reproductive life by redirecting their energies into ritual activities. Chapter four examines the acquisition and transmission of knowledge. Chapter five defines the ritual domain of yawulyu, and distinguishes this ceremony from others performed by women. The sixth chapter provides a detailed case study of the organization and performance of yawulyu ceremonies. And chapter seven describes the integration of 'new' Dreams and dances into an existing ceremony. I conclude by recapitulating some of the major points made in the thesis and by making some suggestions concerning the future of Warlpiri women's acquisition of status and prestige in the social and ritual spheres.
