This paper explores the challenges of implementing client-centred occupational therapy practice. While many occupational therapists believe in the principles of client-centred practice and espouse them, it seems much more difficult to implement these into everyday practice. Findings from three qualitative studies with three different populations (i.e., family-centred care for children and their families, community-based home care, facility-based care for older adults) are used to illustrate the challenges which are divided into three broad categories: challenges at the level of the system, at the level of the therapist and at the level of the client. Suggestions for change at each level are addressed. Organizations, therapists and clients must work together to facilitate these changes and ensure that each occupational therapy client receives respectful, supportive, coordinated, flexible and individualized service.

Mental Health Clinicians are accustomed to being confronted with not only difficult situations, but difficult conversations. Although discussing issues of diversity can be challenging, these dialogues are vital to the therapeutic process. In order to work under a multicultural framework, a clinician must minimally have basic knowledge on the culture of the client(s) being treated. Therapists are to use culturally appropriate intervention strategies and be mindful of the rules of the client’s culture. It is advised to work with the client(s) to define their culture, what it means to them, and what it means to society. It is the duty of a clinician to exemplify this for clients and give clients the power, permission, and invitation that they may believe they need, to do the same. This article discusses issues of diversity in the incarcerated system, clarifies the clinician’s role, and empowers clinicians to utilize multicultural techniques in treatment.

Canadian occupational therapists aspire to be client-centred. As a profession we continue to debate what this means. The question of how to be client-centred becomes more acute when the client has cognitive deficits, and capacity, including the legal right to consent to treatment, is called into question. Further, in current literature and law, capacity is described as situational (i.e., specific to the time, circumstances and question being asked) and thus, difficult to determine. In this discussion, the author will explore two strategies, graded decision-making and advocacy, for practicing in a client-centred manner with cognitively impaired clients.

This article explores the difficulties that arise for divorce lawyers and their clients when the client has borderline personality disorder. The borderline is characterized by instability in interpersonal relationships, poor impulse control, chronic rage, and a pervasive fear of abandonment. Successful divorce requires the management of separation and strong emotions, adaptation to change, and the necessity of negotiation and compromise. These tasks constitute a severe challenge to the limited behavioral repertory of the borderline. For the borderline, divorce is like being in hell. And for the lawyer, this is a very difficult client to please.

This case requires you to consider the complexities of auditing in terms of a realistic client-auditor interaction involving difficult accounting issues. The case is loosely based on an actual situation that occurred between an audit firm and its client. In the case you will assume the role of either the auditor or the client as you attempt to resolve inventory and accounts receivable valuation issues for which there are no “clear-cut” solutions. This case includes three sections. First, you will read an article containing an auditor-independence risk framework to help you understand how client-auditor interactions relate to auditor independence risk. Second, you will develop alternative solutions to the inventory and accounts receivable valuation issues in your respective auditor or client group. Third, you will interact with another group assuming the opposite role and you will resolve the valuation issues in some way. By completing the case, you will learn about client-auditor relationship/interaction issues, client-auditor economic incentives, and auditor independence risk issues.

This article discusses the case of a male vowed religious clergy, who was also in residential treatment for sexual misconduct and interpersonal difficulties. Importantly, this client also had a childhood history of sexual trauma. The case, difficult and complex in its own right, posed unique clinical challenges. The first author and therapist, a Catholic, feminist, woman often works with child trauma clients. Thus, the experiences of transference and countertransference were particularly important therapeutic considerations working with this client. Themes of power, sex, shame, guilt, and blame needed to be explored and processed in depth from the client’s and therapist’s perspectives both during session and supervision. Concurrent issues include personality disorders, physical disability, and psychosexual disorders. This client was referred by their religious institution and took part in a mandated fourteen to twenty-week residential programme. Therapeutic modalities include trauma-informed, attachment-oriented, and psychodynamic individual and grouporiented psychotherapy.

Occupational therapists, known for their ability to coach others through difficult changes, now find themselves in changing environments that include clients' desire for participation in service delivery, and the need for evidence of the outcome of occupational therapy intervention. This paper proposes a process model that is based on core concepts of occupation and client-centred practice, that incorporates theoretical approaches, and can be applied to all clients. The process model coaches the occupational therapist through a client-centred problemsolving process. It represents a description or plan for occupational therapy assessment and intervention that leads to a collaborative approach to client-identified occupational performance issues. Examples of the application of the process to occupational therapy practice are included. This model helps to articulate core concepts and values, and provides guidance for occupational therapy practice within changing environments and expectations.

Cognition-Emotion-Action model (1980) with Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour ABSTRACT (TpB, 1991) towards understanding helping behaviour of clinical staff who work with clients diagnosed with a personality disorder (PD) who display difficult and challenging behaviour. Design: This is a quantitative study making use of a single group cross-sectional regression design. A regression analysis was used to examine the predictive ability of the primary constructs within the TpB against the constructs of attribution and emotion from Weiner's (1980) model to explain staff helping behaviour. Method: Ninety three clinical staff from all professions took part in a short semi- structured interview regarding an incident of difficult behaviour they had recently experienced involving a client diagnosed with a PD. Participants then completed the Attributional Style Questionnaire Revised (ASQ-R), the Emotional Reactions to Challenging Behaviour scale (ERCB), the Generalised Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), the Helping Behaviour Questionnaire (HBQ) and two bipolar scales for helping and severity of challenging behaviour. Results: The constructs within the TpB adequately predicted staff helping behaviour, with attitude and perceived control being significant determinants of intention and perceived control and intention significantly predicting helping behaviour. Subjective norm was non-significant in predicting intention. Weiner's (1980) model was also found to significantly predict helping behaviour with controllability being the only significant determinant of helping behaviour. A combination of the TpB and Weiner's model was found to account for greater variance in helping behaviour than the individual models.

Annotation:
This study analyses the different points of view that lead to a better understanding of international public policies addressing climate change mitigation in the beginning of the XXIth century. In a truly worrying context according to current scientific data, it questions the international community’s ability to act upon the current environment crisis. Many studies and policies about climate change are focusing on the ability to adapt to climate change; but it is important to know how policies that mitigate the climate change still remain legitimate and gather interest. Based on a large number of research publications and national or international public reports, this bibliographic study produces a review of the international management of the current environment crisis; an evaluation of the most important issues it reveals for the next decades about our society’s models (political, economic, social, ethical...); an assessment of the difficulties it creates for international negotiations (threats to national sovereignties, protection of specific interests, roles sharing between various stakeholders, organization and logistics of complicated means...); and finally an analysis of the different outlooks for the next decades depending on the international community’s level of action in the near term (magnitude of temperature warming and its consequences, associated political and economic models, form and extent of international cooperation...). First, this study addresses the climate change process itself and its context within the evolution of our contemporary society (Part I). Second, it exposes the great difficulties facing today’s politicians to tackle the environmental crisis (Part II). Then, it analyses the systematic inability of the global economic model to assume by itself the full responsibility of climate change mitigation (Part III). Finally, this study presents a number of considerations regarding the need to establish an equitable and sustainable economic development at the global scale (Part IV)

Annotation:
Climate change represents what science says and what politics is increasingly taking into account (Ouranos, 2015). The purpose of this thesis aims to document the implementation of the two last action plans against global warming, prepared by the Governement of Québec, namely Le Québec et les changements climatiques : un défi pour l’avenir. Plan d’action 2006-2012, and Le Québec en action. Vert 2020. Plan d’action 2013-2020 sur les changements climatiques. At the junction between the analysis of public action (Matland, 1995 ; Kübler et Maillard, 2009) and the theoretical framework of the ecological modernization and its tradition of the public policies sociology (Béal, 2016), this thesis tries to answer two questions : how is the implementation carried out and why are there successes and difficulties to this adoption? Québec gets its foot in a low-carbon society, through the wind and hydroelectric energy tandem. However, fighting against climate change represents a major challenge, which Québec has accepted with an ambitious target. The PACC 2006-2012 got some basis implemented, but there remains a lot to do and outcomes remain unknown : will the PACC 2013-2020 achieve its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 20 % below the line of 1990 (Gouvernement du Québec, 2012a, p. I) ? At march 31, 2016, one notes the under-implementation of the PACC 2013-2020, since 22 % only of the planned budget had already been spent (MDDELCC, 2017a, p. 46). Greenhouse gas emissions reduction and climate change adaptation are lagging behind projections. The thesis fits into the theoretical framework of the ecological modernization (Huber, 1982 ; Spaargaren et Mol, 1992 ; Hajer, 1995 ; Jänicke, 1995 ; Mol, 2003 ; Christoff, 2009 ; Spaargaren et al., 2009 ; Toke, 2011), which many people present as the sociological version of the sustainable development project, focused on state and industrial actors, then the civil society (Buttel, 2003). Moreover, source of analytical and comprehensive wealth, which escapes from quantitative studies, the preferred method is semi-directive interviews (Fortin, 2013) with the supervisors of the two PACC, public authorities for the greater part, as well as content analysis (Leray, 2008) for data treatment. But the obvious limitations of the indicators and the qualitative method involve a partial validation of the hypotheses. Otherwise, the ecological modernization thesis takes place in a long-term perspective and requires time for an empirical testing (Guay, 2018)...

AbstractBuilding network-connected programs and distributed systems is a powerful way to provide scalability and availability in a digital, always-connected era. However, with great power comes great complexity. Reasoning about distributed systems is well-known to be difficult. In this paper we present , a novel framework based on separation logic supporting modular, node-local reasoning about concurrent and distributed systems. The logic is higher-order, concurrent, with higher-order store and network sockets, and is fully mechanized in the Coq proof assistant. We use our framework to verify an implementation of a load balancer that uses multi-threading to distribute load amongst multiple servers and an implementation of the two-phase-commit protocol with a replicated logging service as a client. The two examples certify that is well-suited for both horizontal and vertical modular reasoning.

Research on outsourced product development has focused primarily on the motives behind firms’ decisions to outsource, with less attention paid to the outcomes of those decisions. The few existing academic studies have reported high failure rates, but there is little consensus as to what is meant by “project success” and “failure” and some do not define success at all. Such ambiguity makes comparisons difficult and hinders explanation of observed variation in project outcomes. This paper explores the many meanings of project success in outsourced product development, based on in-depth interviews of thirty design consultants and clients. After reviewing the merits and limitations of each metric, we propose that the client’s willingness to recommend the consultant may be a suitable outcome variable for assessing project outcomes and comparing success rates across diverse projects, companies, and industries. We present preliminary data that suggests client willingness to recommend varies widely and is multimodal in distribution. Finally, we identify several commonly encountered failure modes, i.e., sequences of events that generate discrepancies between client expectations and project deliverables, thereby producing client dissatisfaction.

Psychotherapy is considered to be the most difficult and at the same time the most attractive manifestation of psychological competence, the pinnacle of psychological realization, the master profession. For the therapist, who aims to support the client’s autonomy, art is key in the work process. This article discusses some of the art forms that used in the psychotherapeutic setting turn psychotherapy itself into art. The aesthetic experiences that the psychotherapist and the client go through on the way to achieving the desired goal are considered.

Effective use of nuclear fuel is an important issue in nuclear material engineering. Pu recycle is refocused for effective use of nuclear fuel. MOX and inert matrix fuels (e.g., ZrO2-PuO2) are expected for effective burning Pu, however, Pu material is difficult to manage due to its radiotoxicity. As a result, cost of experimental facilities is very expensive. As computer simulation not only cuts cost for experimental researches but also provides deep understandings in atomic behavior, we have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to research its material characteristics. In order to obtain realistic results, many atoms and many time steps are essential, however, such computation takes too much long time. So a parallelized program code is executed on a grid computing environment provided by an Information Technology Based Laboratory (ITBL) project. Its grid computing infrastructure (hereafter an ITBL system) provides users a seamless computing environment and many kinds of software tools such as a file manager, a program execution manager, and a cooperative tool for AVS/Express on a grid computing environment. Furthermore, a client application program interface (API) is provided to build a variety of grid applications on a client terminal PC for accessing the ITBL’s functionalities. As there is a strong request from users in our material simulation research to utilize their native visualization software, we have selected the client API to build an application-specific grid computing environment which cooperates with the visualization software. We have built a customized graphical user interface (GUI) computing environment on a client terminal PC by using the Java client API. It provides a seamless access to ITBL’s computational resources from a user’s terminal PC. It also assists choosing parameters for the computation in parameter survey runs. Moreover, it enables successive processing of computation on remote parallel computers and visualization on a user’s terminal PC in a single operation. The environment also provides a user friendly GUI interface for parameter controls and monitoring of submitted jobs. As a result, this computing environment removes difficulties in manual operations for parallel computations and visualizations in parameter survey runs. So, it prevents users from mistakes in the operations. This environment is expected to accelerate finding procedure for good nuclear fuel.

In order to provide a convenient tool for engineering designed, safety analysis, operator training and control system design of the high temperature gas-cooled test reactor (HTR), an integrated system for simulation, control and online assistance of the HTR-10 has been designed and is still under development by the Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University in China. The whole system is based on a network environment and includes three subsystems: the simulation subsystem (SIMUSUB), the visualized control designed subsystem (VCDSUB) and the online assistance subsystem (OASUB). The SIMUSUB consists of four parts: the simulation calculating server (SCS), the main control client (MCC), the data disposal client (DDC) and the results graphic display client (RGDC), all of which can communicate each other via network. The SIMUSUB is intended to analyze and calculate the physical processes of the reactor core, the main loop system and the stream generator, etc., as well as to simulate the normal operation and transient accidents, and the result data can be graphically displayed through the RGDC dynamically. The VCDSUB provides a platform for control system modeling where the control flow systems can be automatically generated and graphically simulated. Based on the data from the field bus, the OASUB provides some of the reactor core parameter, which are difficult to measure. This whole system can be used as an educational tool to understand the design and operational characteristics of the HTR-10, and can also provide online supports for operators in the main control room, or as a convenient powerful tool for the control system design.

Abstract Digital communication over the Internet offers advantages in terms of speed, efficiency and automation. Fortunately, new geometric algorithms for design, simulation, and manufacturing have been developed and reported in the research literature. Unfortunately, the impact of these advances on the manufacturing community has been limited since implementations are difficult to port from one platform to another. As an example of how the Web can facilitate interactive design, we focus on one specific application area: modular fixture design. We have substantially extended our previous fixture design service, FixtureNet (Wagner et al., 1996), and added interactive tools to allow the user to build a deeper, more intuitive understanding of the fixtures found by FixtureNet. The first tool allows the user to simulate the effects of forces applied to the part in the fixture. Our second tool enables the user to consider changes to a part and verify in real-time that the fixture will still immobilize the modified part. Our tools balance the tasks between the Web client and a central server, performing fast user interactions in the client while running compute-bound fixture design jobs on the server. The implementation of this work can be found online at: http://riot.ieor.berkeley.edu/riot/Applications/FixtureNet.

In this paper, we propose a collaborative product development and virtual prototyping framework based on distributed haptic interfaces along with the deformable object modeling. Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) is a promising technique in industrial product development and virtual prototyping for globalized manufacturing enterprises. Network control problems such as network delay have greatly limited CVE’s application. The problem becomes more difficult when high-update-rate haptic interfaces and computation-demanding deformable objects are both integrated into CVEs for intuitive manipulation and enhanced realism. A hybrid network architecture is presented to balance the computational burden of haptic rendering and deformable object simulation. An adaptive artificial time compensation is used to reduce the time discrepancy between the server and the client. Interpolation and extrapolation approaches are used to synchronize graphic and haptic data transmitted over the network. The proposed techniques can be used for collaborative product virtual prototyping, virtual assembly, remote surgical simulation and other collaborative virtual environments where both haptic interfaces and deformable object models are involved.

In the practice of psychological counselling for clients, there are often socio-psychological difficulties that frustrate the process and make it impossible for the parties to achieve their goals. Misunderstanding, discrepancies, bad relations between the parties, distrust for each other, and other difficulties originate directly in situations of interaction between psychological counselors and their clients. The aforementioned difficulties require special analysis. This constitutes the main goal and novelty of the present study. Psychological counseling is deemed as an interaction, as actions of parties towards each other, underpinned by unity of the subject, place, and time of their activity. A psychological counselor and each of their clients undertake some actions to solve a target goal, including in situations of immediate interaction. As a result, each party sets and realises certain goals, is motivated by certain motives, is active, etc. They shall solve a target goal by mutual efforts. The article contains a summary on personal interaction situations, and on social-psychological phenomena that are generated by personalities in counselling situations. The article describes the essence, main phases and social-psychological difficulties of the interaction of psychological counselors and their clients. The following main methods selected for studying social-psychological difficulties of counseling interaction: diagnostic interview, questionnaire, final reports upon client checkups, expert evaluation. The findings confirmed the hypothesis of negative socio-psychological phenomena acting as a form of difficulty upsetting the counsellor-client interaction. The study has provided an opportunity to broaden the understanding of the content and the socio-psychological challenges of psychological counselling.

YouTube Live is one of the most popular services on the Internet, enabling an easy streaming of a live video with acceptable video quality. Thus, understanding user´s perception of this service is of the utmost importance for network operators. As in other videostreaming services, YouTube Live traffic is sometimes affected by delays due to unfavourable network conditions, which translate into unacceptable initial reproduction times or image freezes as a result of client´s buffer underrun. Detecting these events is key to ensure an adequate Quality of experience (QoE). Unfortunately, data encryption makes it very difficult for operators to monitor QoE from packet-level data collected in network interfaces. In this paper, an analytical model to estimate the QoE for encrypted YouTube Live service from packet-level data collected in the interfaces of a wireless network is presented. The inputs to the model are Transport Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) metrics, from which three Service Key Performance Indicators (S-KPIs) are estimated, namely initial video play start time, video interruption duration and video interruption. The model is developed with an experimental platform, consisting of a user terminal agent, a WiFi wireless network, a network-level emulator and a probe software. Model assessment is carried out by comparing S-KPI estimates with measurements from the terminal agent under different network conditions introduced by the network emulator.

Nowadays the application of experimental modal analysis techniques on railway vehicles is gaining importance. A correct identification of modal characteristics allows improving the dynamic behavior design of the vehicle and so reaching higher running speeds and accomplishing better comfort levels. So far, in the railway sector only conventional modal analysis techniques have been used. With these techniques, the modal parameters are determined during a static test by measuring the responses of the system to one or multiple known forces. This paper presents the application of the Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) technique on a railway vehicle. This technique determines the modal parameters employing only the responses of the system to an unknown excitation. In this way, the data to be used can be acquired during on track test which presents three main advantages. The first one is that the nonlinear components of the suspensions are working in their normal operating condition which is difficult to achieve during a static test. The second one is that the wheel spinning effect is taken into account. Finally, the test can be combined with other type of track tests, reducing the period of time before delivery of the vehicle to the client. In the case under study, the OMA technique is applied by means of commercial software to measurements performed on a passengers train. The modal parameters obtained for the carbody and one of the bogies are presented.
