Abstract We demonstrate a figure-of-9 all-fiber thulium-doped laser (TDFL) that generates 560 fs long pulses at 1948 nm wavelength. In order to achieve self-starting passive mode-locking, we utilize an in-fiber Faraday rotator to induce a nonreciprocal phase shift. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first all-fiber TDFL that combines an artificial saturable absorber (SA) with a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) as a wavelength-selective reflector. This cavity design is an excellent candidate to pump nonlinear processes such as supercontinuum and frequency comb generation since it does not require any SA material that degrades over time for mode-locking and could be made wavelength-tuneable via the CFBG.

El fruto del lulo posee un alto valor nutritivo y es de gran uso en la agroindustria, no obstante, la rentabilidad del cultivo ha disminuido debido a su perecibilidad, lo cual genera pérdidas en poscosecha. Se aplicó un diseño completamente al azar con arreglo factorial, el primer factor fue la dosis de 1-MCP (0, 280 o 560 µg L-1) y el segundo, la temperatura de almacenamiento (2, 4 o 14 °C) sobre frutos de lulo en estado de madurez comercial, para un total de 9 tratamientos, a los cuales se les midió el pH, los sólidos solubles totales (SST), firmeza, índice de color (IC), acidez total titulable (ATT), intensidad respiratoria (IR) y pérdida de masa (PM). Los frutos refrigerados tuvieron 29 % de pérdida de firmeza y alcanzaron 32 ddc (días después de cosecha), mientras que al ambiente solo duraron 20 ddc con una pérdida de firmeza del 42 %. Los frutos almacenados a 14 °C tuvieron mayor PM, IR e IC que los frutos refrigerados. Los frutos con 1-MCP en dosis de 280 y 560 µg L-1 presentaron mayor cantidad de SST, comparados con el testigo. Los frutos de lulo se deben almacenar a 2 °C con una dosis de 1-MCP de 560 µg L-1.

The article presents data on the prevalence, classification, diagnosis, and treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Given the variety of etiological factors, special attention is paid to the differential diagnosis of idiopathic (primary) and secondary BMS. The article also examines topical and systemic causes of burning tongue, which should be excluded when examining patients with complaints specifically attributed to BMS. The information presented in the article allows physicians of various specialties to make an individual plan of diagnostic measures for each patient, taking into account the comorbid background and anamnestic data. The main cause of treatment difficulties in BMS is a complex, not fully investigated etiopathogenesis. Due to the fact that the multifactorial nature of this disorder is most likely to involve topical, systemic and psychogenic causes, a multidisciplinary method involving physicians of various specialties (neurologist, dentist, therapist, psychiatrist) is optimal in the patient management with BMS. Object The prognosis for patients with primary malignant brain tumors is poor despite aggressive treatment, and tumor recurrence is common regardless of the chosen therapy. Although multimodal treatment does not provide a cure, it is necessary to determine which treatment modalities have the greatest cytotoxic effect and can potentially prolong survival. Immunotoxin therapy is a novel approach for the treatment of tumors, and it has been successfully used in the central nervous system. Because the interleukin (IL)–4 receptor is commonly expressed on brain tumor cells, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of using a modified diphtheria toxin–murine IL-4 (DT390-mIL4) immunoconjugate for the treatment of murine brain tumor cell lines and to determine whether the addition of radiation therapy could potentiate the effect of this agent. Methods Spontaneous murine glioblastoma (SMA-560) and two neuroblastoma (Neuro-2a and NB41A3) cell lines were treated using DT390-mIL4 at different concentrations, and the anti–mouse IL-4 monoclonal antibody (11B11) was used for blocking its cytotoxicity. Other SMA-560 and Neuro-2a cell lines were treated using 500 cGy of radiation 3 hours before DT390-mIL4 treatment. Cytotoxity was evaluated using a trypan blue viability assay. The immunoconjugate exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect with 50% inhibitory concentration values of 0.56 × 10−9 M in SMA-560, 1.28 × 10−9 M in Neuro-2a, and 0.95 × 10−10 M in NB41A3 cell lines. The cytotoxicity of DT390-mIL4 was specifically blocked by an excess of 11B11. Cytotoxicity was additive when the DT390-mIL4 at 10−9 M immunoconjugate administration was followed by radiation therapy. Conclusions These results indicate that the IL-4 receptor can be a target for diphtheria toxin fusion proteins and that radiation can potentiate the effects of DT390-mIL4. The development of multimodal approaches to treat malignant brain tumors with agents that have different mechanisms of action may be beneficial.

Chronic pain is a major cause of physical disability, poor mental health, and decreased quality of life [1,2]. The burden of chronic pain is reflected in increased medical care utilization and consequently increased healthcare costs, which are estimated at an astounding $560 billion per year [3]. CDC estimates from 2019 reveal that while 20.4% of adults in the USA live with chronic pain, the prevalence increases with advancing age [4]. 30.8% of people aged 65 years and above had chronic pain while 11.8% of them had high-impact chronic pain, which is defined as pain that causes significant restriction of self-care, social and work-related activities [5]. The impact of chronic pain is more severe in the elderly; older adults report poorer physical health and disability in comparison to younger adults [6-8]. Chronic pain in the elderly is also associated with poorer sleep, cognitive decline, dementia, and death [9-13]. With the projected increase in the elderly population in the US every year, the burden of chronic pain is only expected to increase. This chapter outlines the physiologic and pharmacologic changes that happen with ageing, the major causes of chronic pain in the elderly, as well as the myriad of treatment options available with a focus on pharmacotherapy, behavioral and alternative therapies, and interventional pain therapies. The focus of treatment is not only targeted towards reducing pain but special considerations should be made to minimize the cognitive effects of polypharmacy in light of multiple comorbidities and promote mental well-being and functional independence [14].

Ed. 2010, 49, 1638) a procedure for enantioselective intramolecular cyclopropanation, beginning with a propargyl sulfonamide 4. Gerhard Hilt of Philipps-Universität Marburg established (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 1536) that an aryl alkyne 6 could add to cyclopentene to give the cyclobutene 7. Hajime Ito of Hokkaido University devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 5990) a protocol for the borylation of an alkenyl silane 8 to give an intermediate α-lithio silane, which cyclized to the cyclobutane 9 with high diastereoconrol. Aryl alkenes worked as well. This same approach could be used to construct cyclopentanes and cyclohexanes. Zhi-Xiang Yu of Peking University showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 4542) that the triene 10 cyclized to the cyclopentane 11 with high diastereocontrol. Yong Tang of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry optimized (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 4463) a Cu catalyst for the enantioselective Nazarov cyclization of 12 to 13. The meso bis-carbonates 14 and 16 were prepared by singlet oxygenation of the inexpensive cyclopentadiene. Mark Lautens of the University of Toronto developed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 4056) a protocol for the enantioselective coupling of 14 to an arene boronic acid, giving the carbonate 15 with high enantiocontrol. Professor Ito devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 560) a complementary procedure, coupling 16 with bis-pinacolatoborane to give an intermediate allylborinate, that then added to the aldehyde 18 to give 19 with high stereocontrol. It would be interesting to know if these procedures worked as well with the meso bis-carbonates derived from cyclohexadiene. Saim Özkar of Middle East Technical University prepared (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 6541) Ru nanoclusters stabilized by a zeolite framework that effected hydrogenation of 20 at near ambient conditions, in contrast to the high pressure and temperature usually required.

A new prototype of a ripening chamber was proposed aiming to evaluate the application of computational fluid dynamics in the optimization of traditional cheeses ripening conditions. With the purpose of evaluating the possible impact in the production of cheese in three Portuguese regions, the potential economic benefits of the prototype were demonstrated. The proposed automation process would imply higher production efficiency, increasing sales, decreasing stock levels and a significant reduction in the consumption of water and electricity. Based on average values, it was estimated potential increases of 133 010 € in sales and an individual net present value of almost 560 000 €. In addition to the economic impact in firms, which are mostly small and medium firms, the results also contribute to an increase on the sustainable use of natural resources. However, it is important to highlight the contribution of the project in a pandemic situation to develop a better financial situation of the firms based on a higher margin of the business.

Bubbles around a solid surface moving in a fluid at high Reynolds number drastically reduce the associated turbulent drag. In this paper, we present experiments on the interaction of air bubbles with a solid wall. The design of an experimental setup is described, that allows generating bubbles with diameters of 0.4 to 2 mm and observes their interaction with a solid wall whose angle with the horizontal can be controlled. Depending on the bubble size and angle of inclination of the solid wall, the bubbles bounce off or slide along the wall. High-speed visualizations of the bubble-wall interactions are performed for values of Reynolds and Weber number ranging from 40 to 560 and 0.04 to 1.80 respectively. Our experimental results are compared with the work of Tsao and Koch [Physics Fluids 9, 44 (1997)].

Эффекты потенциальных токсикантов зависят от различных внешних факторов, в том числе и от времени суток в момент добавки токсиканта. Ранее нами было показано, что добавление K2Cr2O7 в культуры Scenedesmus quadricauda и Chlorella vulgaris вечером вызывает более слабый токсический эффект, чем при добавлении утром, что, возможно, связано с повышенной чувствительностью к токсиканту молодых клеток, появляющихся в результате деления клеток культуры в ночное время [1]. Действие фосфора на культуру Chlorella vulgaris Beijer. в зависимости от времени его добавки в культуру изучали в присутствии 100, 500 и 1000 мг Р/л. Дополнительно учитывали факторы влияния температуры и освещения, потому опыты проводили как в люминостате (20°С, освещение 12:12 ч), так и в многокюветном культиваторе KBМ-05 (36°С, освещение 24 ч). Оптимальная температура для C. vulgaris: 36,0 ± 0,5°C. Эксперименты проводили в двух вариантах, отличающихся лишь временем добавления токсиканта: в 8:00 (момент включения света в люминостате) и в 20:00 (выключение света в люминостате). Численность клеток культуры определяли с помощью фотоэлектрокалориметра ИПС-03 по оптической плотности (длина волны – 560 нм), а величину эффективности фотосинтеза Fv/Fm вычисляли по индукционной кривой, регистрируемой на флуориметре Мега-25. Показано, что время добавления фосфора значительно влияло на темпы роста культуры. В люминостате, при лимитировании по параметру температуры и коротком световом периоде, разница при утренних и вечерних добавках выражена сильнее, чем в культиваторе, в котором C. vulgaris находилась в оптимальных условиях. В люминостате, в условиях стресса, более высокие темпы роста наблюдали при добавлении фосфора в культуры в утреннее время. В культиваторе, в оптимальных условиях, максимальное отклонение от контроля в сторону стимуляции численности наблюдали при вечерних добавках. Одновременно с этим, величина эффективности фотосинтеза при вечерних добавках была ближе к уровню контроля. Можно сделать вывод о зависимости роста численности C. vulgaris от времени добавления в культуру фосфора. Работа выполнена в рамках Государственного задания МГУ имени М.В. A component vital to the successful implementation of single-mode fiber signal processing and communications systems is an integrated in line Bragg cell that can function as a modulator, SSB frequency shifter, and tunable WDM tap. A number of reported devices1,2 go toward achieving this goal, the most efficient to date being the flexural-wave modulator in a dual-mode single-core (DMSC) fiber developed by Kim et al.2 In their device the LP11 and LP01 normal modes (NMs) of the DMSC structure are coupled together by an acoustic flexural wave whose wavelength matches the intermodal beat period. Launching light into the even mode results in a frequency-shifted signal in the odd mode. In practice, however, it is difficult to excite just one NM, and a frequency-shifted signal in the LP11 mode is not appropriate for efficient pigtailing to a single-mode fiber. The dual-core (DC) device we have developed avoids these problems by permitting low-loss fusion splicing of a single-mode fiber to either core and having negligible intrinsic coupling. This is achieved by designing the DC to be phase velocity mismatched to such a degree that the NMs of the DC coupler are almost identical to the modes of each core in isolation. Provided that there is sufficient overlap of the modal fields, distributed feed-forward NM (and hence intercore) coupling will be achieved3 in the presence of a flexural wave at the correct frequency. We fabricated two different DC fibers, DC1 and DC2, with experimentally determined beat lengths of 0.43 mm and 1.205 mm, respectively at λ = 1μm. Flexural waves were excited by using fused silica horns bonded to the DC fibers with glass solder. The intrinsic coupling in DC1 was too small to measure with our setup, and 8.5% acousto-optical coupling was obtained at 4.6 MHz and 962.5 nm. The instrinsic coupling of the DCS was approximately 4%, and 100% (and beyond) acousto-optical coupling was achieved at 560 kHz and 1.064 μm. The length of DC fiber in each case was 30 cm. Both devices were widely tunable. The results of a heterodyne experiment with DCS, illustrated in Fig. 1, are presented in Fig. 2. The high intrinsic coupling of DC2 meant that the carrier was not fully suppressed, and the 9 cm of fiber on the opposite side of the horn meant that sideband suppression was not perfect. We believe that with additional development the modulator has considerable potential as a practice device.

Abstract: Resume. Currently almost no attention is paid to the potential possibility of air pollution of premises for various purposes by industrial fibers (natural (asbestos) and man-made mineral fibers) in the Russian Federation while there is increasing use of materials containing such fibers in industrial and civil construction. Purpose. To conduct a survey of premises for various purposes to identify materials containing industrial fibers and assess the potential possibility of releasing fibers from them using research methods adopted in modern world practice. Materials and methods. A visual and instrumental survey of premises was carried out; 169 materials samples, 57 dust samples and 45 air samples were sampled and analyzed. Results. The numerical fiber concentrations in air samples did not exceed the standarts for working area air (0.2 f/ml for man-made mineral fibers (MMMF) and 0.01 f/ml for asbestos fibers), used in modern world practice. MMMF were detected in half of the dust samples, chrysotile asbestos fibers (CAF) were detected in 3 dust samples, MMMF together with CAF were detected in 9 dust samples. CAF were presented in 85 of 169 materials samples, MMVF were presented in 34 materials samples, organic fiber were presented in 18 materials samples, no fibers were presented in 32 materials samples. When using the algorithm for estimating the probability of fiber releasing, 43 materials containing CAF had a very low chance of fiber releasing, 18 – low, 21 – medium, and 3 – high chance, and 15 materials containing MMVF had a very low chance of fiber releasing, 11 – low, 7 – medium, 1 – high. Conclusion. Materials containing industrial fibers are widely used in premises for various purposes. Visual and instrumental survey allows detecting such materials and assessing their condition for the development of measures set to control working area air pollution. The detection of fibers in dust samples makes it possible to establish the presence of sources of air pollution, as well as to identify them in most cases.
