Redox imbalance plays an important role in the pathogenesis of CKD progression. Previously, we demonstrated that microRNA-382 (miR-382) contributed to TGF-β1-induced loss of epithelial polarity in human kidney epithelial cells, but its role in the development of renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis remains unknown. In this study, we found that with 7 days of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in mice, the abundance of miR-382 in the obstructed kidney was significantly increased. Meanwhile, the protein expression of heat shock protein 60 (HSPD1), a predicted target of miR-382, was reduced after 7 days of UUO. Expression of 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) was upregulated, but expression of thioredoxin (Trx) was downregulated. Anti-miR-382 treatment suppressed the upregulation of miR-382, attenuated renal interstitial fibrosis in the obstructed kidney, and reversed the downregulation of HSPD1/Trx and upregulation of 3-NT after UUO. Furthermore, in vitro study revealed that overexpression of HSPD1 significantly restored Trx expression and reversed TGF-β1-induced loss of E-cadherin, while in vivo study found that direct siRNA-mediated suppression of HSPD1 in the UUO kidney promoted oxidative stress despite miR-382 blockade. Our clinical data showed that upregulation of miR-382/3-NT and downregulation of HSPD1/Trx were also observed in IgA nephropathy patients with renal interstitial fibrosis. These data supported a novel mechanism in which miR-382 targets HSPD1 and contributes to the redox imbalance in the development of renal fibrosis.

Previously we have shown that microRNA miR-382 can facilitate loss of renal epithelial characteristics in cultured cells. This study examined the in vivo role of miR-382 in the development of renal interstitial fibrosis in a mouse model. Unilateral ureteral obstruction was used to induce renal interstitial fibrosis in mice. With 3 days of unilateral ureteral obstruction, expression of miR-382 in the obstructed kidney was increased severalfold compared with sham-operated controls. Intravenous delivery of locked nucleic acid-modified anti-miR-382 blocked the increase in miR-382 expression and significantly reduced inner medullary fibrosis. Expression of predicted miR-382 target kallikrein 5, a proteolytic enzyme capable of degrading several extracellular matrix proteins, was reduced with unilateral ureteral obstruction. Anti-miR-382 treatment prevented the reduction of kallikrein 5 in the inner medulla. Furthermore, the protective effect of the anti-miR-382 treatment against fibrosis was abolished by renal knockdown of kallikrein 5. Targeting of kallikrein 5 by miR-382 was confirmed by 3′-untranslated region luciferase assay. These data support a completely novel mechanism in which miR-382 targets kallikrein 5 and contributes to the development of renal inner medullary interstitial fibrosis. The study provided the first demonstration of an in vivo functional role of miR-382 in any species and any organ system.

Compost sources were used to determine long-term influence on common vegetable cropping systems (tomato, pepper, and cucumber). Three sources of Controlled Microbial Compost (CMC) (20 yd3/A) amended with fumigant Telone-C35 (35 gal/A) and Trichoderma-382 [2.5 oz/yd.3 (T-382)] were used during 3 consecutive years. Tomato showed statistic differences (1%) among compost treatments with higher total yields when CMC was combined with Telone-C35 (21%) and T-382 (8.2%). All treatments but Bio-Compost and control presented al least 25% more marketable yield per acre. No differences in fruit size were found for tomato, except for medium-size fruit when Telone C-35 was added. The CMC alone or combined with Telone C-35 and T-382 increased the total plant dry weight at least 18.6%. Pepper crop showed statistic differences with higher number of No. 1 fruit size when CMC was combined with Telone C-35 and T-382. Number of culls per acre decreased for all three compost sources, with no differences from the control. Cucumber yields differed among treatments for total and marketable yields and No.1 size fruit per acre. Best yields were achieved with CMC and when mixed with Telone C-35 and T-382. The lower numbers of culls per acre were found with Bio-Compost and Lexington sources and CMC+T-382. Total plant dry weight was increased in at least 24% when Bio-Compost or CMC compost were used alone or combined with Telone-C35 or T-382. CMC increased root knot nematode soil counts and percentage of root galling, but tended to improve root vigor in cucumbers. It seems that compost sources combined with Telone C-35 or T-382 could improve the cropping management as alternative to methyl bromide. Weed responses will also be discussed.

Abstract Background Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a leading threat to human lives with high incidence and mortality. Circular RNAs were reported to play important roles in human cancers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of circ_0005962 and explore the underlying functional mechanisms. Methods The protein levels of Beclin 1, light chain3 (LC3-II/LC3-I), Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4), Cleaved Caspase 3 (C-caspase 3), and proliferating cell nuclear antigen were examined using western blot analysis. Glycolysis was determined according to the levels of glucose consumption and lactate production. Xenograft model was constructed to investigate the role of circ_0005962 in vivo. Result circ_0005962 expressed with a high level in NSCLC tissues and cells. circ_0005962 knockdown inhibited proliferation, autophagy, and glycolysis but promoted apoptosis in NSCLC cells. miR-382-5p was targeted by circ_0005962, and its inhibition reversed the role of circ_0005962 knockdown. Besides, PDK4, a target of miR-382-5p, was regulated by circ_0005962 through miR-382-5p, and its overexpression abolished the effects of miR-382-5p reintroduction. circ_0005962 knockdown suppressed tumor growth in vivo. Conclusion circ_0005962 knockdown restrained cell proliferation, autophagy, and glycolysis but stimulated apoptosis through modulating the circ_0005962/miR-382-5p/PDK4 axis. Our study broadened the insights into understanding the mechanism of NSCLC progression.

У статті досліджено особливості покарання за невиконання судового рішення за кримінальнімй законодавством України. Виконання судових рішень – один із основних критеріїв, за яким громадяни оцінюють спроможність, ефективність і чесність системи правосуддя в будь-якій державі. Натомість відсутність дієвого механізму забезпечення виконання судових рішень негативно впливає на авторитет судової влади, оскільки відтак не досягається кінцева мета правосуддя – захист інтересів громадян і реальне поновлення їхніх порушених прав. У контексті предмету дослідження оарактеризовано окремі положення про загальне поняття покарання, зміст і форма покарання у вітчизняному кримінальному законодавстві. На цій теоретичній основі проаналізовано види покарання за невиконання судового рішення і підстави для їх застосування. Вивчено пом'якшуючі і обтяжуючі обставини і вплив ст. 69 КК України на призначення покарання за вчинення вказаного злочину. Наголошено на необхідності чіткого обґрунтування судами застосування судового розсуду при прийнятті рішення у кримінальному провадженні про невиконання судового рішення. Межі покарань за злочин, передбачений ст. 382 КК України, встановленні у санкціях цієї статті є необґрунтованими, оскільки вчинення злочину, передбаченого ч. 2 ст. 382 КК України, спеціальним суб’єктом є більш суспільно небезпечним, аніж учинення того ж посягання загальним суб’єктом. Якщо порівнювати санкції ч. 2 та ч. ч. 3, 4 ст. 382 КК України, то очевидно, що за менш суспільно небезпечне діяння судом може бути призначено суворіше покарання. Автор запропонував збільшити розмір покарання за вчинення злочину, передбаченого ч. 2 ст. 382 КК України, від однієї тисячі до двох тисяч неоподатковуваних мінімумів доходів громадян та збільшити мінімальний розмір основного покарання у санкції ч. 3 і 4 ст. 382 КК України до п’яти років позбавлення волі.

Four gamma gene constructs with 5' truncated at -141, -201, -382, and -730 of the A gamma gene promoter linked to a micro locus control region (microLCR) cassette were used for production of transgenic mice and analysis of gamma gene expression during development. Mice carrying a microLCR -141 A gamma construct displayed downregulation of gamma gene expression in the adult stage of development, indicating that the proximal promoter contains elements participating in gamma gene silencing. Mice carrying a microLCR -201 A gamma or a microLCR -382 A gamma construct displayed high gamma gene expression in the fetal stage of development and complete loss of gamma gene downregulation in the adult stage, suggesting that the -141 to -201 gamma gene sequence contains elements which upregulate gamma gene expression and are dominant over the negative element 3' to -141. Extension of the promoter to -730 resulted in reappearance of gamma gene downregulation, suggesting that the -382 to -730 sequences contain an adult-stage-specific silencer. gamma gene expression in the microLCR -201 A gamma and the microLCR -382 A gamma transgenic mice was copy number dependent. All the microLCR -730 A gamma transgenic mice expressed gamma mRNA; however, gamma gene expression was copy number independent, indicating that levels of gamma gene expression were modulated by the surrounding chromatin. Our results suggest that multiple elements participate in gamma gene silencing. The findings in the microLCR-201 A gamma and microLCR -382 A gamma transgenic mice are interpreted to indicate that the LCR interacts not only with the minimal gamma gene promoter but also with sequences of the upstream promoter. We postulate that gamma gene downregulation is achieved when the interaction between LCR and the upstream promoter is disturbed by the silencer located in the -382 to -730 region. We propose that gamma gene silencing is achieved by the combined effect of negative elements located 3' to -141, the negative element located between -382 and -730, and the competition by the beta gene promoter during the adult stage of development.

Owing to a lack of appropriate therapeutic regimens, prostate cancer (PC) is a global health concern with a high incidence and mortality rate in elderly men. Combination treatment seems to have the highest clinical benefit and avoids unwanted side effects. The current study focused on the chemotherapeutic efficacy of Zoledronic acid (ZA) in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or Flutamide on prostate cancer cells, as well as its effect on apoptosis. The MTT assay was used to determine the cytotoxic effect of Zoledronic acid (ZA), 5-FU, and flutamide on PC-3 and DU-145 cells, as well as the combined therapy of ZA with 5-FU or flutamide. Additionally, immunofluorescence staining analysis was used to assess changes in Bcl-2 and p53 expression. Furthermore, the western blotting method was extensively used to evaluate Bax, caspase 3, and cyclin D1. Furthermore, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to determine the relative expression of miRNA-382 (miR-382) and miRNA-18a (miR-18a). Instead of (13.47, 8.23, and 9.42 μM) for PC-3 or (38.77, 17.6, and 8.47 μM) for DU145 cells, the combination therapy improved cytotoxicity with doses approximately half of IC50 (6.74, 4.12, and 7.07 μM) in PC-3 and (19.38, 8.8, and 6.33 μM) in DU145 cells for ZA, 5-FU, and flutamide, respectively. When compared to a single therapy, the combination therapy significantly up-regulated the pro-apoptotic Bax, cleaved caspase 3 and p53 levels while down-regulated the cyclin D1 and Bcl-2 expression. In addition, the combination therapy was linked to changes in miR-382 and miR-18a expression. Our findings suggest that combining ZA with 5-FU or flutamide improves chemotherapeutic efficacy against prostate cancer cells, at least in part by encouraging apoptosis and modulating miRNA expression, especially miR-382 and miR-18a.

Qingdao Metro Line 3 is the first subway line in Shandong province, some tunnels need to cross water-rich sandy layers. At the time of passing through the water-rich sandy layers, how to maximum the deformation characteristics of the tunnel during excavation becomes the critical problem of the design and construction. This paper studies Qingdao Metro Line 3, directs at water-rich sand layer section YK16+382, with the use of on-site monitoring and measuring instruments, analyses the characteristics of ground deformation of the cross section. And we calculated the deformation by Flac3D numerical simulation in YK16+382 cross section, studied the arch and surface subsidence and convergence deformadon variation of convergence. Finally compare site monitoring measurement with numerical computational results and then we can get the convergence of arch and surface subsidence and convergence deformadon, provide theoretical guidance for the actual construction.

Therefore, a field research was conducted in the field of Lamjung Campus, Sundarbazar from July-October, 2015. Two Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design under direct seeding (DSR) and transplanted (TPR) cultivations with weeded and non-weeded check for diverse rice cultivars (US-382, Sukha-2, NR-10676, NR-10490 and Khumal-10) as treatments was executed in field with 3 replications. Statistical results indicated that Rotataindica, Fimbristylis miliacea, Ageratum conyzoides, Cyperusiria, Polygonum barbatum and Cynadon dactylon were found as the major weeds under both DSR and TPR whereas Paspalum distichum L., Alternanthera sessiles L., Echinochloa colona L., Digitariasp., Amischophacelus axillaris L., Echinochloa crusgalli L. were minor. Rotataindica was found the major weed in TPR. It was seemed that the highest weed population recorded for US-382(131.7/m2),when cultivated under TPR system but it was completely absent under DSR. Meanwhile Cynadon dactylon was completely absent in weeded region of TPR system, which in contrary was the highest in weeded field of DSR with variety US-382(18.7/m2). Similar results were found in case of biomass for varieties consisting higher number of weeds while it was lowest in weeded field of NR-10490 shown as TPR. Highest grain yield was obtain from the weeded region of US-382(7.7 t/ha) of TPR system whereas lowest yield was found in varieties NR-10490 and NR-10676 (1.8 t/ha) of non-weeded region of DSR system. With the increase in biomass of weed the yield of rice decrease gradually with co-relation, y = -0.0119x + (R² = 0.1251). The paper presents the results of studies on the cultivation of maise in joint crops with soybean in the forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia in 2003-2005. The authors studied plant height and dynamics of green mass yield of maise and soybean. As a result of recording plant height, the authors observed that corn hybrid Ob 150 CB by 25-30 cm and corn hybrid Krasnodar 382 MB by 35-47 cm were higher in single-seeded crops by harvest than in joint crops, indicating the negative impact of soybeans on corn. The maise hybrid Krasnodarskiy 382 MB reacted more strongly to the depress- ing effect of soybean than the hybrid Obskiy 150 SV in terms of plant height. This comparison was especially noticeable when it was cultivated in joint crops with the early-ripening soybean variety SibNIIK-315. In the early stages of development, the height of soybean plants in single-species and different variants of common crops did not practically differ. However, starting from the phase of fruit formation, the authors observed a decrease in the height of soybean plants in the row with maise and its increase in the intercropping. By harvesting, the difference between the height of soybean plants of the variety October 70 in the row and across the row was on average 11-24 cm. At the same time, the soybean plants of the variety October 70 were lower in the row with maise and higher in the row spacing than in the single-seeded crop. The height of the plants proves not only the principle of competitiveness but also the effect of the high range of tiering, which forces the legume component to reach for the light. In a mixture with the late-ripening maise hybrid Krasnodarskiy 382 MB, the early-ripening soybean variety contributed to a more significant decrease in the green mass yield of maise than the late-ripening soybean variety October 70. Harvesting, conducted on 2-6 September, showed that joint crops of maise, regardless of early maturity, provided a green matter yield of 23.7-40.1 t/ha. This yield was 49% and 14% lower than in the single-species crops of early maturing hybrid maise Ob 150 CB and 2-3 times lower than the mid-season hybrid Krasnodar 382 MV. The nature of the interspecific relationships indicates a more significant negative impact of early maturing soybean variety SibNIIK-315 on the productivity of maise and especially the medium-maturing hybrid Krasnodarskiy 382 MV, where the differences with the single-species sowing showed the most significant value – 51 %.

The DAX-1 [DSS (dosage sensitive sex)-AHC critical region on the X, gene 1] gene is responsible for X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC). However, DAX-1 protein structure-function relationships are not well understood. Identification of missense mutations may help to reveal these relationships. We analyzed the DAX-1 gene from seven patients in six kindreds with X-linked AHC and identified one frameshift mutation, two missense mutations, and three deletion mutations. Case 1 had a 388delAG frameshift mutation, inducing a premature stop codon at position 70. Case 2 had a missense mutation, Lys382Asn, which encodes an asparagine (Asn) for lysine (Lys) at position 382. Sibling cases of 3-1 and 3-2 had a missense mutation of Trp291Cys, which encodes a substitution of cysteine (Cys) for tryptophan (Try) at position 291. The tryptophan (Trp) at position 291 and lysine (Lys) at position 382 in human DAX-1 protein are highly conserved among other related orphan nuclear receptor superfamily members. Cases 4, 5, and 6 showed deletion mutation. In case 6, a de novo deletion mutation was revealed by both southern hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of a GGAA tetranucleotide tandem repeat. These findings suggest that: 1) Trp at position 291 and Lys at position 382, located in the C-terminal presumptive ligand binding domain, are important to the functional role of the DAX-1 protein in adrenal embryogenesis and/or in hypothalamic-pituitary activity; and 2) molecular analysis of the DAX-1 gene may help genetic counseling, even in cases with deletion mutation, because a detection of de novo deletion may exclude another affected or carrier child.

(1) Background: Lymph node (LN) status is an indubitable prognostic factor for survival among colon cancer patients. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in the development and progression of many cancers and are potential biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Therefore, we validated candidate biomarkers using circulating miRNAs by analyzing the plasma miRNA concentrations from patients with colon cancer to predict LN metastasis. (2) Methods: This study included 79 blood samples from patients diagnosed with colon cancer. The NanoString assay was used for screening, and TaqMan miRNA assays for quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test was used for validation. In a discovery set, we compared the expression of 800 circulating miRNAs in 24 samples (stage 0/I/IIA versus IIIB/IIIC). For validation, a total 79 samples were tested using quantitative RT-PCR. (3) Results: In the discovery set, 10 candidate circulating miRNAs were detected (4 up-regulated miRNAs: miR-323a-3p, miR-382-5p, miR-29a-3p, and miR-376a-3p; 6 down-regulated miRNAs: miR-26a-5p, let-7g-5p, miR-15b-5p, miR-142-3p, miR-374a-5p, and let-7b-5p). In the validation set, higher expression of three circulating miRNAs (miR-323a-3p, miR-382-5p, and miR-376a-3p) was significantly associated with LN metastasis (p = 0.0063, 0.0107, and 0.0022). (4) Conclusions: High expression of circulating miR-323a-3p, miR-382-5p, and miR-376a-3p was significantly associated with LN metastasis in colon cancer patients. These miRNAs could be circulating biomarker candidates that predict the presence of LN metastasis.

The propositus, a 54-year-old man with a history of recurrent thromboembolic events, and his two asymptomatic grown children are heterozygous for the mutant antithrombin III gene. In all three individuals, the immunoreactive antithrombin III level is normal, while the antithrombin and antifactor Xa activity is approximately 50% of the control value. Two dimensional immunoelectrophoresis of antithrombin-III-Hamilton in the presence of heparin is normal. Purified antithrombin-III-Hamilton did not form thrombin-antithrombin III complex when incubated with thrombin for up to 30 minutes. The normal and mutant antithrombin III alleles of the propositus could be distinguished by linkage to Pstl restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP). Genomic DNA from the propositus was cloned into EMBL 3 phage vectors and two clones containing nearly complete copies of the antithrombin-III-Hamilton allele were identified. Exon 6 of both clones was subcloned into M13 phage vector and sequenced, revealing a G----A point mutation in the first base of codon 382. Codon 382 codes for alanine in the normal allele and for threonine in the antithrombin-III-Hamilton allele. Alanine-382, 12 residues from the reactive center, is a highly conserved amino acid in the family of serine protease inhibitors known as the serpins. We postulate that, as a result of the substitution of threonine for alanine in antithrombin-III-Hamilton, either the tertiary structure or the hydrophobicity of the thrombin-binding region is altered, causing aberrant conformation of the Arg-393-Ser-394 bond at the reactive center impairing the interaction between antithrombin-III-Hamilton and the activated serine proteases.

Objective: To assess the immunisation status, frequency of complications and the outcome in chil- dren admitted with measles in public and private sector hospitals of Karachi. Methods: In this cross-sectional study a total of 382 patients admitted with measles, of either sex from 3 months to 13 years, who presented from March 2016 to March 2017 were included. A total of 265 (69.3%) children were from Ziauddin University Hospital (ZU) and 117 (30.6%) from Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (AS). Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used. Those with con- genital anomalies and chronic medical illnesses were excluded from the study. Detailed history and physical examination was done, and findings entered in a Proforma. Immunisation status of the pa- tients was recorded. All the patients were observed for complications like encephalitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, otitis media, epiglottis, febrile fits and corneal ulcers. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 22. Categorical values were compared by chi-square test, p-value of <0.05 was con- sidered significant. Results: A total of 382 were patients admitted with measles, 265 (69.3%) from Ziauddin University hospital and 117 (30.6%) from Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Overall, 57.4% were completely vaccinated in ZU vs. 32.5% in AS. Despite being completely vaccinated, children in ZU; 152/265 (80%) and in AS; 38/117 (30.6%) had complications with a statistically significant (p<0.0001) difference between private and government sector hospitals. Predominantly, in both hospitals pneumonia was common followed by gastroenteritis. Overall mortality was 13/382 (3.4%) in both hospitals combined. Conclusion: A sizeable number of children admitted with measles in both private and government hospitals were unvaccinated. A significant number developed measles despite receiving two doses of vaccine. Frequency of complications was higher in private versus government hospitals. Mortality from measles was high (3.4%) especially in the unvaccinated.

Abstract LMO2is a crucial regulator of normal hematopoiesis but is progressively silenced from the early T-cell progenitor stage of thymic development. Aberrant LMO2 expression leads to a block in differentiation, increased self-renewal and aggressive T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Although ≈50% of T-ALL patients overexpress LMO2, this can be attributed to a cytogenetic lesion in only ≈10% of patients, leaving a significant portion mechanistically unaccounted for. We recently discovered somatic mutations that create an oncogenic super-enhancer driving TAL1 expression (Mansour et al., 2014, Science). Therefore, we investigated whether comparable mutations may be causing dysregulated LMO2 expression. Aberrant H3K27ac marks indicative of active chromatin were identified prior to and encompassing the non-coding exon 2 of the LMO2 gene by ChIP-seq in DU.528 and PF-382 T-ALL cell lines, both of which exhibit upregulated LMO2 expression but lack chromosomal lesions at this locus. Sequencing across this peak revealed a heterozygous 20bp duplication in PF-382 cells and a heterozygous 1bp deletion in DU.528 cells, located close to a region recently described as an intermediate promoter. Both indels generated a de novo MYB consensus motif. MYB ChIP-seq showed that ≥96% of reads aligned to the mutant rather than the wild-type allele, suggesting that MYB was preferentially recruited to the mutant allele. Heterozygous mutations were also detected in diagnostic samples from 3% (5/159) of pediatric and 6% (10/164) of adult T-ALL patients. Absence of the mutations in 7 available patient-matched remission samples confirmed that they were somatic. The mutations were densely distributed around highly conserved native ETS1, MYB and GATA motifs; 5 patients had an additional MYB site, 3 both a MYB and an ETS1 site, 1 an ETS1 site alone, and 4 had new RUNX1 binding sites. This suggests that this region may have a regulatory role that is exploited by the mutations to constitutively activate LMO2. All 6 mutant-positive patients with available RNA showed LMO2 overexpression as determined by qRT-PCR, consistent with the hypothesis that these mutations activate gene expression. Furthermore, monoallelic LMO2 expression could be demonstrated in DU.528 cells and 3 of 4 informative T-ALL samples using a heterozygous germline SNP. Expression of the mutations in luciferase reporter assays also indicated that they all markedly activated luciferase activity to between 2x and 57x compared to the wild-type sequence. To assess causality between the mutations and LMO2 dysregulation, we used CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing with a guide RNA designed to target the mutant MYB site in PF-382 cells. Reduction of LMO2 expression to ≤10% of PF-382 mutant activity was observed in a clone where the mutant allele had been reverted to wild-type and in another clone with a single T>C substitution disrupting the mutant MYB binding site. Interestingly, 2 clones that increased the distance between the native and the mutant MYB sites also resulted in a reduction in LMO2 expression to 19% and 25% of PF-382 activity, suggesting that there are functionally limiting spatial constraints on the mutant MYB site in relation to other neighboring transcription factor binding sites. This was further validated by the lack of reduction in LMO2 expression in a clone where the sequence between the two MYB sites was altered but the spacing distance was unchanged. In conclusion, we have identified and functionally validated a novel recurrent mutation hotspot occurring in a non-coding site whereby introduction of additional binding sites for a number of different transcription factors drives monoallelic LMO2 overexpression from a neomorphic promoter in a substantial proportion of both adult and pediatric T-ALL patients. This mechanism of oncogene activation may be relevant to a wide variety of human cancers. Agarwood is resinous valuable heartwood of Aquilaria tree resulting from self–defence mechanism towards injuries or damages exerted on the tree. Agarwood essential oil is usually extracted through a process of hydrodistillation or steam distillation which is beneficial for commercial purposes such as perfumeries and cosmetics. Hydrosol, a byproduct of the process produced in abundance and underutilized particularly in the agarwood industry. Hydrosol of agarwood is an aromatic compound that is believed to have chemical properties similar to essential oils that consist of positive antioxidant activity and positive biological activity for living cells. Several studies on properties of hydrosol of agarwood show that it contained zero nutrient but varied with minerals in the appropriate proportion that safe for human consumption. Thus, this review was aimed to discuss the agarwood hydrosol processing methods, characteristics, antioxidants properties and its comparisons to other plants hydrosol that have been commercially used as human consumption as in flavoured and non-flavoured beverages

This study assessed the diffusion coefficient (Da) for mineral losses from potatoes during the frying process under various conditions by using the solution to Fick’s second law for a slab of infinite extent in non-dimensionalized form. Diffusion coefficient values increased as potato cube frying temperature increased from 65°C to 95°C in 16 mins. Calcium (Ca) had values ranging between 3.693×10-10 to 3.9872×10-10 M 2 S -1 ; Iron (Fe) ranged between 2.931×10-10 to 3.314×10-10 M 2 S -1 ; Magnesium (Mg) ranged between 5.576×10-10 to 7.666×10-10 M 2 S -1 ; Potassium (K) ranged between 7.841×10-10 to 8.516×10- 10 M 2 S -1 , and Sodium (Na) ranged between 2.823×10-10 to 3.513×10-10 M 2 S -1 . It was found that the effect of temperature on the diffusion coefficient had an Arrhenius-type equation correlation. Activation energy values for Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na loss in potato were 10.49 kJ/ mol, 8.17 kJ/mol, 12.85 kJ/mol, 11.16 kJ/mol, and 9.98 kJ/mol, respectively. It was found that the diffusion coefficient (Da) values for minerals losses were independent of diameter in the 0.5 to 1.5 cm range. Diffusion coefficients (Da) for Ca were observed as 2.961×10- 10 M 2 S -1 and 2.632×10-10 M 2 S -1 for 1.0 cm and 0.5 cm diameters, respectively, when tested at 75°C for 16 mins. Mg had Da values of 6.722×10-10 M 2 S -1 and 6.891×10-10 M 2 S -1 at 1.0 cm and 0.5 cm, respectively. Potassium had coefficient values of 8.013×10-10 M 2 S -1 and 8.319×10-10 M 2 S -1 at 1.0 cm and 0.5 cm, respectively, at similar testing conditions. Therefore, dimensions do not affect the diffusion coefficient significantly.

The objective of the recent study was to evaluate the effect of banana pseudostem flour (EBP) to the organoleptic properties, levels of dietary fiber, resistant starch and antioxidants of canna starch-based food bar. The research design was true experimental in the form of completely randomized design with 6 treatments using canna starch: banana pseudostem flour. The six treatments were 100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, and 75:25 ratio. The best food bar was determined by scoring through organoleptic test, content of soluble dietary fiber and antioxidants. Food bars processed with mixture of banana pseudostem flour proportion 85:15 was selected as the best food bar with a score of color attribute 3.12±0.08, aroma 3.00±0.06, flavor 3.04±0.18, texture 3.16±0.12, soluble dietary fiber content 0.83±0.07% db, insoluble dietary fibers of 6.75±0.14% db, total dietary fiber 7.58±0.13% db, resistant starch 6.54±0.24% db, total phenolic 105.75±0.64 mg/100 g, antioxidant activity 6.97±0.77% RSA, color brightness (L*) 52.52±0.60 and hardness level 5.08±1.95 N. The substitution of banana pseudostem flour on the canna starch-based food bar increased level of soluble dietary fiber 0.83%, total dietary fiber 4.81%, resistant starch 2.89%, total phenolic 43.01 mg/100 g and antioxidant activity 3.98% RSA as well as sensory panelists preferred. The higher the mixture pseudostem flour proportion, the higher the tendency of the levels of dietary fiber, resistant starch, total phenolic and antioxidant activity.

The cell proliferation activity of proliferating bile ducts produced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in rats was examined histologically, immunohistochemically, and ultrastructurally. Proliferating bile ducts, which were similar to normal bile ducts, increased with time after BDL. The cell proliferation activity of proliferating bile ducts, measured using proliferating-cell nuclear antigen and 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine antibodies, tended to be high at 1 and 3 days after BDL and decreased progressively at 2 to 4 weeks after BDL. On the other hand, α-smooth muscle actin-positive myofibroblast-like cells increased continuously after BDL. These findings indicate that there is a negative correlation between the cell proliferation activity of proliferating bile ducts and that of myofibroblast-like cells.
