In this paper we present some results on the nonstatistical fluctuation in the 1-dimensional (1-d) density distribution of singly charged produced particles in the framework of the intermittency phenomenon. Nonstatistical fluctuations in the density distribution of shower tracks coming out of 32 S – Ag/Br interaction at an incident momentum of 200A GeV/c, have been characterized by using the intermittency and multifractality techniques. A sample of 32 S – Ag/Br nuclear emulsion events has been partitioned into three subsamples with respect to the shower track multiplicity in such a way that one can roughly estimate the average centrality for each subsample. Thereby, the centrality dependence of a set of relevant intermittency and multifractal issues has been investigated.

Two major outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease serogroup C (IMD-C) were identified in British Columbia between 2000 and 2004. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) andporAgene sequencing of all retained IMD-C isolates were used to assess correlations between genotypes and epidemiological patterns. ZusammenfassungPluripotente Stammzellen (PS-Zellen) des Menschen wurden erstmals in den 1990er-Jahren aus der inneren Zellmasse von Präimplantationsembryonen unter Anwendung zuvor in der Maus und im nicht humanen Primaten etablierter Techniken gewonnen (Thomson et al. 1998). Durch Selektion pluripotenter Zellen und deren klonaler Vermehrung wurden die ersten menschlichen embryonalen Stammzellen (ES-Zellen) entwickelt. Basierend auf einem tiefen Verständnis der für den Pluripotenzerhalt notwendigen molekularen Mechanismen gelang es Takahashi und Yamanaka, Transkriptionsfaktoren zu identifizieren, die bei kombinierter Anwendung als „OKSM“ (Oct3/4, Klf4, Sox2, c-Myc) somatische Zellen (z. B. Hautzellen) in sog. induzierte pluripotente Stammzellen (iPS-Zellen) reprogrammieren können (Buganim et al. 2013). El objetivo principal de este estudio fue extraer y caracterizar los biocompuestos presentes en el aceite de las semillas de Punica granatum, variedad Wonderful, utilizando dióxido de carbono supercrítico (sc-CO2) a una presión constante de 320 bar y un caudal de ~4,05 kg/h. Se exploraron diferentes combinaciones de temperaturas (40, 50 y 60 °C) y tiempos de extracción (200, 250 y 300 minutos), seguidos por análisis mediante cromatografía de gases con detección de ionización de llama y espectrometría de masas. Los resultados indicaron que a 60 °C se logró el mayor rendimiento de aceite (19,54%) durante un período de extracción de 300 minutos, mostrando significancia estadística (p <0,05). Se identificó ácido púnico como el componente predominante, seguido por ácidos esteárico y palmítico, junto con otros ácidos grasos en cantidades menores. Además, se hallaron tocoferoles y esteroles, destacándose la presencia de gamma y beta tocoferol, gamma y beta sitosterol, estigmasterol y alfa tocoferol (vitamina E) como componentes esenciales. El alto contenido de ácido púnico y otros compuestos beneficiosos subraya su potencial aplicabilidad en investigaciones relacionadas con componentes saludables y funcionales, aportando relevancia en el ámbito de la salud y la nutrición.

This case study describes the creation of a digital multimodal poem by Mara, a preservice English Education teacher at a large state namesake university located in the Southeastern United States. Drawing on sociocultural perspectives broadly and New Literacies Studies specifically (Gee, 2012; Lankshear & Knobel, 2003; The New London Group, 1996), this study uses multimodal discourse analysis (Jewitt, 2006; Lemke, 1998; O’Halloran, 2009) as a tool to analyze how one preservice teacher’s multimodal composition affected her concept of new literacies. To investigate what Mara learned through the multimodal composing process, the authors analyze three sources of data: a) Mara’s multimodal composition, b) Mara’s written reflection about her composing practices written immediately after she had created her multimodal composition, and c) a ninety-minute interview with Mara using photo-elicitation techniques. Findings indicate that multimodal composing practices can potentially take advantage of the relation between cognition and affect, and do so using cultural means of codification that are both inscribed by textual authors and encoded by acculturated readers. Such experiences and affordances of electronic devices, a trend that is likely to grow as technology continues to advance and become pervasive in the lives of succeeding generations.

Abstract Enzymic debranching of sugar beet arabinan yields essentially linear chains of 50-80 1,5-linked a-L-arabinofuranosyl residues. Solutions of this material ("araban") at sufficiently high concentration (typically 10-20% w/w) develop a cohesive, but spreadable, gel-like structure on storage at or below ambient temperature. Electron microscopy shows a network of randomly oriented microfibrils around 200 nm in length. Gel strength (storage modulus, G’) rises dramatically with concentration (c), 20% samples being about 80 times stronger than those prepared at 10% w/w. The onset of gelation occurs far more rapidly at higher concentrations, with gel-times (at 20’C) decreasing from about 15 hours at 10% w/w to about 30 minutes at 20%. Reduction in temperature also accelerates gel formation (by just over a factor of two between 25’C and l0’C). The gels are stable to comparatively high temperature, with final loss of cohesion occurring at ∼7oc for the weakest samples, increasing to ∼9oc for the strongest. The potential of araban for use in fat replacement, and in other food and non-food applications is discussed.

Seton Lake is a freshwater fiord located in southwestern British Columbia, roughly 4 km west of Lillooet and 250 km north-northeast of Vancouver.
