Zborník príspevkov z 13. vedeckej konferencie mladých historikov, ktorú zorganizovala Katedra histórie Filozofickej fakulty Univerzity Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v Košiciach v spolupráci so Štátnym archívom v Košiciach a Slovenskou historickou spoločnosťou pri SAV 24. októbra 2023 Ústrednou témou konferenčného zborníka z vedeckej konferencie doktorandov je problematika moci, ako inštancie, ktorá je neodmysliteľnou súčasťou ľudského bytia a je prítomná v spoločnosti de facto od jej počiatku. Nakoľko je moc a túžba po moci prítomná aj v súčasnosti, možno viac ako inokedy v histórii ľudskej spoločnosti, zborník predostiera adekvátne odpovede na otázky: Kde sa moc rodí a z čoho pramení? Ako nazerajú spoločenskovedné disciplíny na tie sociálne skupiny, ktoré moc v rukách nemajú? Publikáciu tvorí osem príspevkov od autorov pôsobiacich na slovenských i českých univerzitách. Zborník otvára príspevok Dávida Nykodýma o moci ve městě stříbra v éře Jiřího z Poděbrad. Správe panstiev v rukách vdovy v 17. storočí (na príklade Judity Balassovej) sa venovala Sabina Danková. Problematiku roly univerzitného veľmajstra v monopolizácii vzdelávania za prvého cisárstva 1808 – 1815 vo Francúzsku skúmal Michael Dudzik. Obdobie medzi dvoma svetovými vojnami na území Československa zmapovali vo svojich príspevkoch dvaja autori: Simona Bilecová, ktorá charakterizovala vznik a kreovanie politickej elity na príklade regiónu Rožňava a Dominik Šípoš, ktorý hodnotil moc strany ako ideologický problém Československej národnej demokracie. V tejto línii pokračoval Patrik Beňuš, ktorý podrobne analyzoval krízu v železničnej doprave na južnom území Slovenska po roku 1938. Monika Tresová sa zaoberala činnosťou katolíckych spolkov v Košiciach a ich zánikom pod nátlakom komunistickej moci po roku 1948. Moci a jej legitimite, súdnym rehabilitáciám obetí komunistického režimu na východnom Slovensku v rokoch 1968 – 1971 sa venovala Miriama Balvirčáková.

In our study, we examine the practice of land donation and other land grants that benefited the Order of Vitéz. The members of the Order of Vitéz, established in 1920, were veterans of the First and Second World War who had earned certain commendations due to their personal bravery. Membership in the order was hereditary. From the very beginning, the purpose of the order was to ensure that the interwar political system had stable support from a social stratum loyal to the government even during possible rebellions. To ensure this, the initial plan was to give all members, especially the ones with a background in agriculture, plots of land. Originally, there were only two types of such plots. Free ones, which were donated by the head of state, and the self-founded one, when a Vitéz created a plot from his own property. Later, eight more types of Vitéz plots were established: in most cases, these plots were either acquired at a discounted price, with loans paid for decades, or they could be rented cheaply. The claimants also received Vitéz plots from land holdings in the territories reannexed to Hungary between 1938 and 1941, as well as from the ones confiscated from 1939 due to the Jewish laws. Although the Order of Vitéz acquired a significant amount of territory, it could not give plots to all its members even as late as 1944.

1. ABSTRACT The geology of the northern Sierra Nevada of California records >400 million years of active plate margin tectonic events as a part of the North American Cordilleran orogenic belt. This field-trip guide provides geologic background and description of field-trip stops for a two-day field trip of the 2023 Geological Society of America Cordilleran Section Meeting based in Reno, Nevada. In two days, we cannot sample the complete geologic record of the northern Sierra Nevada, so this guide does not provide an exhaustive review of this geology. We will focus on certain aspects of the geology that have been the subject of recent research and present some previously unpublished observations and interpretations including: (1) distinguishing between subduction complexes and deformed assemblages that overlay subduction zones; (2) evidence for subduction initiation, recorded in high-pressure (P), high-temperature (T) amphibolites and possibly greenschist facies rocks structurally beneath them; (3) finding of high-P, high-T amphibolite blocks in mélange zones in subduction complex units accreted structurally beneath intact high-P, high-T amphibolite horizons; (4) differences in stream profiles between southern Cascade and northern Sierra drainages, suggesting different forcing mechanisms for stream erosion in those regions; and (5) complex relationships between stream incision, volcanic deposition, and Late Cenozoic faulting. • DEDICATION • This field–trip guide is dedicated to Eldridge Moores (1938–2018) and Jason Saleeby (1948–2023) who were giants in Sierra Nevada geologic research. Eldridge passed away in October 2018 while leading a field trip in this area on which the leaders of the current field trip (JW, DS) were participants. Jason passed away during the writing of this guide. As will be clear from reading this guide, the saying “standing on the shoulders of giants” applies.

Este artigo é recorte da dissertação de mestrado defendida em 2019 no Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal do Maranhão e tem por objetivo analisar a cultura escolar da cidade de Nova Iorque - MA no período de 1938 a 1968 através das memórias de alunas e professoras, a fim de descrever os aspectos da cultura escolar no período estudado e identificar as representações construídas por elas sobre as escolas onde estudaram e lecionaram. Foi utilizado como método de pesquisa a História Oral mediante aplicação de entrevista de história de vida temática. Utilizou-se como aporte teórico Chartier (1991), Castro (2017), Castanho (2019), Certeau (2011), Julia (2001), Alberti(2000; 2005). A partir das narrativas elegeu-se como categorias empíricas de análise para esse artigo instituições escolares que correspondem ao Grupo Escolar Anália Neiva e Escola Municipal Senador Neiva e, materiais e disciplinas escolares. Constatou-se nas representações das pesquisadas que a escola Municipal Senador Neiva era conhecida como "rasguete" por ser frequentado por crianças de famílias menos abastadas e por se tratar de uma escola reunida em contraposição ao Grupo Escolar Anália Neiva com estrutura arquitetônica adequada e com professoras normalistas que vinham da cidade de São Luís-MA e Floriano-PI. Quanto aos materiais e disciplinas escolares identificamos em primeiro momento, aproximadamente de 1938 a 1950, a fabricação de carteiras de modo artesanal pelos pais de alunos com caixas de sabão recolhidas em comércios locais e, em segundo momento a partir de 1950 a responsabilização em parte do poder público com os materiais escolares, sobretudo com livros de didáticos para o Grupo Escolar. Este trabalho se constitui como uma forma sistematizada e uma representação sobre a cultura escolar de Nova Iorque-MA.

This study includes an analysis of several dozen poorly researched archival files of the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF) devoted to the financing of various activities of the VOKS between 1925 and 1938. Numerous documents, including annual financial projects and preliminary estimates, explanatory notes to justify specific requests and annual balances of expenditures, reveal the importance of the economic component of VOKS’s activities, which were carried out using methods atypical for the socialist economy. The analysis of data and correspondence also reveals the various strategies employed by the leaders of the VOKS to ensure the functioning of this “social organization”, which was under the control of the state apparatus and entirely dependent on its political guidelines and funding. The article is based mainly on the figures of the Exhibitions Department, mention is also made of the total annual budgets of the VOKS, the balances of the Foreigners’ Reception Department and the costs of maintaining the VOKS staff during the period under study.

Already Jarosław Rudniański, the originator of the theory of a non-armed struggle, underlined that a man uses most often the word ‘a struggle’ (and synonymic terms: combat, contest, grapple, fight, wrestle, etc.) when “a given action is distinguishable by a high level of difficulty and psychic suspense.” Therefore, in Rudniański’s opinion, ‘struggle’ could be, for instance, forming mutations by bacteria or viruses to adjust to vaccinations and antibiotics as extreme cases of counteraction. The fact that living organisms do not have human consciousness has no vital meaning for those who fight them. Therefore, it is not surprising that the titles of many scientific publications dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the media coverage, include the word ‘struggle’ or its synonym.The main barrier to the dissemination of knowledge about the science of struggle  identified with the general theory of struggle (agonology) and its four specific theories  in the global scientific sphere (dominated by the English language) relates primarily to the language in which they were published: all of them (since 1938 till 2000) were published in Polish. Admittedly agonology was included by its creator Tadeusz Kotarbiński into praxeology and translated into English, Czech, German, Japanese, Russian and Serbo-Croatian. In the fundamental lecture of praxeology by T. Kotarbiński “A Treatise on Good Work,” (first edition in 1955), it is included in the chapter entitled “Technique of struggle”. The political factor was a fundamental obstacle to the dissemination of both praxeology and agonology when Poland was beyond the Iron Curtain. Jarosław Rudniański published the theory of a non-armed struggle in two steps. Admittedly, his “Elements of praxeological theory of struggle. From the issues of negative cooperation” (1983) was published during the martial law in Poland, but it was not available for official sale. Its best recommendation would be the fact that for many of Solidarity’s leaders, it was a kind of instruction manual for conducting the struggle against communist authorities in a nonviolent way and led to achievement of the ultimate result: the overthrow of those authorities. The second step: “A Compromise and a Struggle. The efficiency and ethics of positive and negative cooperation in a dense social environment” (1989) is at the same time the most complete development of agonology; unfortunately, available only to those familiar with the Polish language. Paradoxically, the pandemic and the aggression against Ukraine are factors that can spark interest in innovative agonology which includes the theory of a non-armed struggle and the theory of compromise.

The idea of ‘innovative agonology’ came into being in 2016 in the Archives of Budo journal with the thematic section ‘Prophylactic and Therapeutic Agonology”. Innovative agonology (IA) is an applied science dedicated to promotion, prevention and therapy related to all dimensions of health and regarding the optimization of activities that increase the ability to survive (from micro to macro scales). The basic method of IA in the research and application sphere is a complementary approach in the broadest possible cognitive-behavioural perspective.At the essence of any particular science is the substantiation of its claims. Since any time one needs to either maintain health, survive, eliminate or slow down the effects of destructive factors, the key phenomenon is some form of combat, so the justification for these necessary actions is provided by the science of struggle. All five existing theories of struggle are published in Polish, with the terminology of Tadeusz Kotarbiński’s (1938) general theory of struggle (agonology) prevailing over the others. Kotarbiński placed military struggles on the ‘ground floor’, parliamentary and judicial disputes, commercial competition, sports fights, etc. on the ‘middle floor’, and he reserved the top floor’ for the general theory of action (praxeology), which includes agonology  but not vice versa. Since the usefulness of almost every scientific discovery is considered from a military perspective, it is not surprising that another theory (detailed one) by Józef Konieczny concerns destruction (1969). Paradoxically, Jarosław Rudniański published the theory of non-armed struggle during martial law in Poland under a camouflaged title (1983). In 1989, when Russian troops were still stationed (they left Poland on September 17, 1993), he re-issued the work (without camouflage) and supplemented it with the theory of compromise. At that time (1991) I published the theory of defensive struggle together with the theoretical basis for complementary prevention and therapy of somatic and mental health and increasing personal safety (survival). The law of the only possibility, as defined in my theory of combat sports (2000), is universal enough to be used in interpretations of even such remote phenomena as miraculous healings.Rudniański defined general rule of struggle as “an action in which a material or surrounding all the action’s time is in independent motion from an acting one, creating simultaneously strong and various resistance; act this way to be able at any moment possibly change both a plan of action and its manner”. Such a broad rule encompasses every case of human struggle with the need to overcome (fight) against factors that threaten one’s own or others’ health or life, as well as the defence of universally recognized values, nature, cultural products, technology, etc.Familiarity (by at least one member of the research or practical problem-solving team) with the languages and algorithms of detailed struggle theories, as well as with the basics of complementary research methodologies, is a prerequisite to minimize the possibility of omitting important details.

The Vernal NE 7.5' quadrangle is located at the northern boundary of the Colorado Plateau physiographic province, within the Uinta Basin sub-province (Fenneman and Johnson, 1946). The Middle Rocky Mountains, in Fenneman and Johnson’s (1946) classification, is located east and north of the quadrangle. The quadrangle includes Ashley Valley, centered on Ashley Creek, which drains the southern flank of the Uinta Mountains. The western part of the quadrangle is defined by the northwest-southeast-trending Asphalt Ridge and the west-dipping slope along the flank of the ridge. The northeastern part of the quadrangle is largely hills composed of Mancos Shale with a cap of pediment gravel (Sprinkel, 2006). The alluvial valley of Ashley Creek has developed into three distinct communities: Maeser, Naples, and Vernal, which is the most populous city and the County Seat. Nearly all of Ashley Valley is privately owned, allowing for continued growth of these communities and extensive farming operations. Tracts of the quadrangle along its western and eastern edges are a mix of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. The primary goals of this map are to provide up-to-date geologic information on the geology surrounding Vernal for the urbanized valley and to break out more detail on Mesozoic units in this region of the Uinta Basin. This work builds on previous mapping by Doug Sprinkel (UGS, retired) (Sprinkel, 2007, 2023). Geology on the periphery and for edge-matching was provided at the 1:24,000 scale through maps of the Dry Fork, Steinaker Reservoir, Donkey Flat, and Vernal NW quadrangles (Haddox et al., 2010; Jensen et al., 2016; Webb, 2017). Mapping was conducted using a combination of black-and-white stereographic photographs from 1937, 1938, and 1974 (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA], 1937; BLM, 1974) and from 1-meter-resolution light detection and ranging (lidar) data (U.S. Geological Survey, 2018). Mapping was aided with the help of relative elevation models, a derivative from a digital elevation model (DEM), to ascertain the elevation of different terrace treads above the modern river channel (Slaughter and Hubert, 2014; Larrieu, 2022).
