Resumo: Este artigo discute os poemas Novo Éden: Poemeto da adolescência (1888-1889), Harpa de Ouro (1888-1889) e O Guesa, O Zac (1902) com destaque ao teor político republicano que os constitui. Nessa tríade, Sousândrade constrói uma narrativa legitimadora da República brasileira apresentando-nos ao panorama da luta pela emancipação da nação livre e democrática como resultado dos esforços de dois heróis nacionais: Tiradentes e, surpreendentemente, a princesa Isabel, ambos representados como mártires cristãos defensores de um novo éden político. Vale ressaltar que esses poemas se inscrevem no momento de transição do Brasil monárquico para o republicano, marcado por disputas ideológicas de grupos políticos que tencionavam ser protagonistas da modernização da nação rumo ao século XX.Palavras-chave: literatura brasileira; século XIX; poesia; república; Sousândrade.Abstract: This article discusses the poems Novo Éden: Poemeto da adolescência (1888-1889), Harpa de Ouro (1888-1889) and O Guesa, O Zac (1902) with emphasis on the republican political content that constitutes them. In this triad, Sousândrade builds a legitimizing narrative of the Brazilian Republic by presenting us with the panorama of the struggle for the emancipation of the free and democratic nation as a result of the efforts of two national heroes: Tiradentes and, surprisingly, Princess Isabel, both represented as Christian martyrs defenders of a new political Eden. It is worth mentioning that these poems are inscribed in the moment of transition from a monarchic to a republican Brazil, marked by ideological disputes by political groups that intended to be protagonists of the nation’s modernization towards the 20th century.Keywords: Brazilian literature; 19th century; poetry; republic; Sousândrade.

Приказан је начин дипломатске комуникације две државе, која се у то време највише одвијала преко њихових посланстава у Цариграду. Посебну важност имала је посета персијског шаха Музафер ал Дин Каџара Краљевини Србији 1900. године. Такође је указано на значај отварања персијског посланства у Букурешту 1902. за односе између две државе. То посланство било је задужено за краљевине Србију, Румунију и Грчку. У периоду од 1889. до 1903. године настављена је и пракса размене високих државних одликовања, успостављена 1878. године.

The taxonomy of the widespread camel spider, Rhagodes eylandti (Walter, 1889), is herein updated and revised by proposing three nominal taxa as its junior synonyms. These are based on data from males of two taxa, Rhagodes melanopygus nigricans Birula, 1905 and R. plumbescens (Walter, 1889), and a female of R. melanochaetus Heymons, 1902. Consequently, both sexes of R. eylandti are re-described and the validity of their morphological diagnostic characters is evaluated. Detailed morphological and morphometrical characters, as well as data on sexual dimorphism and intraspecific variations, are provided. The illustrations of type material are given for the first time. Moreover, a distribution map and ecological notes are presented.

The larva of the genus Brachygonia Kirby, 1889 is described and illustrated for the first time based on the larvae of Brachygonia oculata (Brauer, 1878) discovered and successfully reared in Singapore. Compared to known larvae from genera in the rather heterogeneous subfamily Brachydiplacinae, B. oculata is most similar to species from the genus Brachydiplax Brauer, 1868 after comparison is made with the larva of Brachydiplax farinosa Krüger, 1902.

A checklist of the flying fishes found in the waters off Socotra Archipelago, northwestern part of the Indian Ocean, is provided based on published and original data. Thirteen species from five genera occur in the study area, and four more species found nearby. Keys for the species identification are provided. The type specimen of Exocoetus socotranus Steindachner, 1902 was examined and is determined to be a junior synonym of Cypselurus naresii (Günther, 1889).

We found the four species of Nyctinomops Miller, 1902 living in sympatry in central Guatemala. All specimens were found dead under turbines of a wind farm. Nyctinomops femorosaccus (Merriam, 1889), was previously known from northern Mexico and southwestern United States, and this record extends its distribution at least 1150 km southward, representing the first record for Guatemala and Central America. Although N. aurispinosus (Peale, 1848) and N. macrotis (Gray, 1839) were already known from Central America (Honduras), and these are the first records for Guatemala.

This paper aims to study how the Brazilian Republic was represented in caricatures that circulated in the press of Rio de Janeiro between the years of 1889 and 1902. Therefore, it is proposed to understand the universe around the production of graphic arts in the Press of Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century from the 1840s up to 1902. Thus, the relations between the producers of magazine caricatures and your readers are presented. We analyze the formation of the reading public through the press by itself, which was leading to imaginary consolidation over Republicans symbols since 1889. We investigate how the current media Magazine and The Mequetrefe and Revista Illustrada were the instrumental for popular legitimacy of the republican government system through caricatures with a lot of symbolic elements of the Republic. Also, realize as the Republic used the news means for the consolidation of its Heroes. We also study how the magazines Mequetrefe, Don Quixote and Revista Illustrada did the press coverage about the Federal Elections and the political municipality of Rio de Janeiro way of life during the Republic up to the year of 1902
Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar de que maneira a República Brasileira foi representada nas caricaturas que circulavam na imprensa, do Rio de Janeiro, entre os anos de 1889 e 1902. Para tanto, propõe-se compreender o universo em torno da produção das artes gráficas na imprensa, do Rio de Janeiro, oitocentista desde a década de 1840 até 1902. Dessa forma, são apresentadas as relações estabelecidas entre os produtores das revistas de caricaturas e seus leitores. Analisamos a formação do público leitor pela própria imprensa, a qual foi preponderante para a consolidação do imaginário sobre os símbolos republicanos a partir de 1889. Investigamos como os meios circulantes Revista Illustrada e O Mequetrefe foram instrumentos para a legitimação popular do sistema de governo republicano, através de caricaturas repletas de elementos simbólicos da República. Além disso, percebemos como a República utilizou o meio noticioso para a consolidação dos seus Heróis. Também estudamos como as revistas o Mequetrefe, Revista Illustrada e Don Quixote difundiram as Eleições Federais e a vida política da municipalidade do Rio de Janeiro durante a República até o ano de 1902

Le but de cette these est l etude d une nouvelle forme d ironie apparue dans les annees 1880, et dont la cible est la toute-puissante bourgeoisie. Trois oeuvres sont eutidees : une belle journee d henry ceard (1881). Pot-bouille d emile zola (1882) et contes cruels de villiers de l isle-adam (1883). Apres un examen theorique de la notion d ironie dans ses aspects linguistiques et litteraires, la premiere partie definit les types fondamentaux dans lesquels s incarnent les relations entre ironie et serieux apres 1850 : l individu serieux, le blagueur et l ironiste. Les trois strategies polyphoniques que l ironiste peut alors adopter sont etudiees d un point de vue stylistique : l emphase du blageur, l antiphrase implicite du discours faussement serieux et enfin les figures de la distance dans le discours ironique proprement dit. La troisieme partie est consacree a une metaphore ironique privilegiee, la metaphore du theatre, et se prolonge sur une analyse plus generale du primat de l apparence dans l ideologie bourgeoise- la "comedie bourgeoise". Enfin la quatrieme partie est consacree a l intertextualite, ironique (villiers et zola) ou serieuse (ceard), et debouche sur l analyse de l ambiguite propre au discours ironique
The aim of thesis is the study of a new form of irony which appeared in the 1880 years, and whose target is the omnipotent bourgeoisie. Three works are studied : une belle journee d henry ceard (1881). Pot-bouille d emile zola (1882) et contes cruels de villiers de l isle-adam (1883). After a theoric examination of the notion of irony in its linguistic and stylistic aspects, the first part defines the fundamental types in which the relations between irony and serious after 1850 are embodied : the serious man, the blagueur and the ironist. The three polyphonic strategies the ironist can then adopt are studied from a stylistic point of view : the balgueur's bombast, the implicit antiphrasis of the false serious discurse and finally the distance stylistic devices in the ironic discurse. The third part is devoted to a particular ironic metaphor, the theater metaphor, and continues with a more general analysis of the appearance's primacy in the bourgeoisie's ideology - the "bourgeoisie's comedy". Finally the fourth part is devoted to intertextuality, ironic (villiers and zola) or serious (ceard), and leads to the analysis of ambiguity which caracterizes the ironic discurse

An infinite gray roof with different degrees of transparency is displayed with authority on a Scandinavia made of pieces, fragmented. However, the sky that covers these lands unifies it. The light passes through it and reaches the level of human development in an ethereal way, like an intense white mist, with an almost liquid consistency that allows it to spill on every corner, object, person or building. These particular characteristics can be reflected through art in paintings, films, writings and architectural works. The sensitivity of some artists to this imprecise reality, this forbidden heaven and this invasive northern light was sometimes the real pattern to recreate their art. Vilhelm Hammershøi lived among grays, in a home with stripped interiors. The succession of one gray after in his paintings and images out of focus with fuzzy boundaries constitute a constant grisaille. This unreal light invades Hammershøi's exteriors and architectural paintings, creating a particular atmosphere that was the main inspiration for the films of Carl Theodor Dreyer. Black and white is manipulated in Dreyer's films. White prevails over black. The scale of lighter grays is used to show neutrality, purity, reality without sieves. The manipulation of the northern light in Dreyer's films creates oppressive or ethereal indoor spaces. It also creates backlight exterior scenes where the characters struggle against being dissolved by the intense light or quiet outdoors where the characters disintegrate and almost merge with the background. Poul Henningsen was obsessed with the manipulation of artificial light. He searched the warmth that the Nordic daylight was deprived of. The perfect balance between light and shadow was his goal in order to achieve quiet environments and meeting places. He searched for the vibration of fire in his lamps, longing for the colour of sunlight and feeling nostalgia for his childhood which had passed around an oil lamp light. The search for this vibration can also be found in the Faaborg Museum, designed by Carl Petersen, and it is also mentioned in his three conferences "Textures", "Contrasts" and "Colours." The light passes through the sieve of colour to generate a feeling of warmth characteristic of other latitudes. Red, blue and yellow invade the art galleries, and create the background where the works of art are exhibited. Petersen considers light as the source of colour, all colours are present in it. Erik Gunnar Asplund materialized the transition between tradition and modernity, having a critical and selective look over the new trends. With a tendency to stand out the functionally most important spaces of each building, he gave them relevance morphologically and with the use of light. Arne Jacobsen follows Asplund's steps. A distinct identity emerges and Jacobsen is one of the architects that build on an anonymous Danish architecture background and the prospects of modern architecture. The northern light in the Scandinavian buildings is filtered through designed openings, gaps through which the light slips creating domes, walls and beams, defined by the shadow gradually gaining ground. From light to darkness there is an innumerable range of tonalities, curves and planes, in other words, architectural forms. The simplicity and minimalism present in these artists is unintentional. The light fills their paintings, cinematic landscapes, objects and architecture. The density of the northern light compensates the characteristic nudity of their works; emptiness does not have a place in the Nordic reality.
Una cubierta en infinitos grises y con distintos grados de transparencia se despliega autoritariamente sobre una Escandinavia hecha de trozos, partida, fragmentada. Sin embargo el cielo que sobre ella se extiende la unifica. La luz la atraviesa y llega al plano del desarrollo humano de forma etérea, como una neblina de color blanco intenso, con un carácter casi líquido que le permite derramarse sobre cada rincón, objeto, persona o edificio. Estas características particulares pueden verse plasmadas a través del arte en lienzos, películas, escritos y obras arquitectónicas. La sensibilidad de algunos artistas a esta realidad imprecisa, a este cielo prohibido y a esta invasiva luz del norte, fue, en algunos casos, el motivo elegido para recrear su arte. Entre grises Vilhelm Hammershøi recorrió su hogar, vivió junto a Ida en interiores despojados. La sucesión de un gris tras otro es lo que se retrata en sus lienzos, imágenes fuera de foco con límites borrosos que constituyen una constante grisaille. La onírica luz de Hammershøi invade también sus exteriores y sus pinturas de arquitectura, creando un particular clima, que constituyó la principal inspiración para el cine de Carl Theodor Dreyer. El blanco y negro del cine de Dreyer es manipulado, el blanco está mucho más presente que el negro. La gama de grises más claros es utilizada como medio para plasmar la neutralidad, lo puro, la realidad sin tamices. La manipulación de la luz del norte en el cine de Dreyer, genera ambientes interiores oprimentes o espacios etéreos, exteriores a contraluz en los que los personajes luchan para no ser disueltos por la intensa luminosidad sobre la cual se recortan, o exteriores apacibles en los que las figuras se disgregan y casi funden con su fondo. La manipulación de la luz artificial obsesionó a Poul Henningsen, buscando en la iluminación de la noche nórdica la calidez de la cual la luz diurna estaba privada. El perfecto equilibrio entre luces y sombras era su objetivo para lograr ambientes apacibles y de reunión. Buscó la vibración del fuego en sus lámparas, añorando el color de la luz del sol, y con nostalgia de su infancia que había transcurrido alrededor de la lámpara de petróleo. Lo mismo ocurre en el Museo de Faaborg, diseñado por Carl Petersen, y en lo expuesto en sus tres conferencias "Texturas", "Contrastes" y "Colores". La luz es pasada por el tamiz del color para ser modificada, para generar una sensación de calidez propia de otras latitudes. Rojos, azules, ocres, invaden las salas de exposición y sobre ellos se recortan las obras expuestas. Para Petersen la luz es la fuente del color, en ella todos los colores están presentes. Erik Gunnar Asplund concreta la transición entre tradición y modernidad, teniendo siempre una mirada crítica y selectiva de las nuevas corrientes. Con una tendencia a resaltar los espacios, que por funcionalidad son los principales de cada obra, se los jerarquiza morfológicamente y con el uso de la luz. Arne Jacobsen sigue los pasos de Asplund. Una identidad diferenciada surge y Jacobsen es uno de los exponentes que construye con el bagaje de una arquitectura danesa anónima y las perspectivas de la arquitectura moderna. La luz del norte se filtra en las obras escandinavas a través de aberturas diseñadas, huecos por los que la luz resbala creando cúpulas, muros, jácenas, que quedan delimitadas por la sombra que gana terreno progresivamente. De la luz a la sombra hay una infinidad de tonalidades, curvas y planos; en definitiva, formas arquitectónicas. Lo sobrio y minimalista de los artistas que se han mencionado es intencionado, la luz llena sus pinturas, sus paisajes cinematográficos, sus objetos y su arquitectura. La densidad de la luz del norte compensa la desnudez que caracteriza a sus obras, la vacuidad no tiene lugar en la realidad nórdica.

Education is one of the important issues relating to Republic in the first decades of the last century. This, especially in its school version, was an apparatus to lead the new generations for what it had become - or for what it wished to become - the nation, moving away from the imaginary and symbolic of the Second Empire. In order to do so, the republican education had its focus on guiding teachers not only to teach contents and methods, but inside and parallel to them, to improve the education of sensibilities of children and young people. One of the inversions in this experience are the pedagogical printed stuffs that, at a key moment in the press and in the school, carried out this impulse through the discursive structure composed especially of narratives, articles and prescriptions. Considering this framework, this thesis presents results of a research whose objective was to investigate topics of education of the sensibility in São Paulo in the first two decades of the twentieth century, which are substantially for the effort to produce sensitivities in accordance with the Republic. The research analyzed the Revista de Ensino da Associação Beneficente do Professorado Público Paulista and the Anuário de Ensino do Estado de São Paulo. It considered the myths in the form of reports, fictional or not; differentiated pedagogical orientations for boys and girls; the invention of a republican childhood, especially of scholarly character; the ambiguity of fantasies. The conclusions point out the strong gender division of prescriptions; the subjectivation of children and young people in school form, with emphasis on the processes of selfcontainment; the infantilization of the feminine, seen nature to be under social domination; the denegation of uncontrolled expressive forms, simultaneously with the valorization of the rituals of belonging to the Republic
Uma das importantes questões que se relacionam aos impulsos republicanos nas primeiras décadas do século passado é a educação. Esta, em especial em sua versão escolar, foi um dispositivo para formar as novas gerações para o que se tornara – ou para o que desejava tornar-se – a nação, afastando-se do registro imaginário e simbólico imperial. Para tanto, ocupou-se a educação republicana de orientar os mestres escolares não apenas nos termos dos conteúdos e métodos de ensino, mas, em seu interior e em paralelo a eles, pautar formas de educar as sensibilidades de crianças e jovens. Uma das formas investidas nessa experiência são os impressos pedagógicos que em momento chave da imprensa e da escola, levaram a cabo essa empreitada por meio da tessitura discursiva composta especialmente por narrativas, artigos e prescrições. Considerando este quadro, esta tese expõe resultados de uma pesquisa cujo objetivo foi investigar aspectos desse processo de educação do sensível em São Paulo nas duas primeiras décadas do século vinte, marcantes para o esforço de produção de sensibilidades em conformidade com a República. Orientando-se pela análise de dois conjuntos de documentos, a Revista de Ensino da Associação Beneficente do Professorado Público Paulista e o Anuário de Ensino do Estado de São Paulo, foram analisados os mitos passadistas na forma de relatos, ficcionais ou não, a destinação de imperativos pedagógicos diferenciados para meninos e meninas, a invenção de uma infância republicana, especialmente de caráter escolarizado, a ambivalência das fantasias. As conclusões apontam para a rígida divisão de gênero nas prescrições; a subjetivação de crianças e jovens na forma escolar, com ênfase nos processos de contenção de si; a infantilização do feminino, visto como mais próximo da natureza a ser dominada; a denegação das formas expressivas não controladas, em simultaneidade com a valorização dos rituais de pertencimento à República

Resumo: O estudo faz uma análise historiográfica do início da República enfocando a criação e a antecipação da vigência do Código Penal de 1890, como instrumento de um projeto de poder de um regime autoritário, imposto em nome de uma modernidade liberal, que sequer era capaz de transpor os limites de um pensamento oligárquico conservador. O objetivo da tese é confrontar a ação repressora do Estado nos processos de crimes contra a segurança interna da República, com a garantia constitucional do Habeas Corpus, que estabelecia limites ao poder punitivo, corrigindo as ilegalidades e abusos de poder das autoridades republicanas, como indicativo de uma nascente cidadania. A tese defende que as elites republicanas, sem qualquer preocupação de ampliar as bases de legitimação do novo regime e expandir as garantias civis, buscaram realizar o controle social, taxando de inimigos perigosos os cidadãos que desrespeitavam o poder da autoridade e a ordem política e social instituída. Por meio do método quantitativo e qualitativo em história, o estudo utilizou como fontes de pesquisa os processos remanescentes do 1º Ofício Criminal da Comarca de Franca existente no Arquivo Histórico Municipal "Capitão Hipólito", no período de 1890 a 1902, visando à compreensão dos conflitos judiciais envolvendo a autoridade e o cidadão em Franca, no momento de novas configurações sociais resultantes da expansão da economia cafeeira, da chegada da ferrovia, da modernização da cidade e do crescimento p... Abstract: This study is a historiographical analysis related to the Republic beginning focused on the creation and anticipation of the 1890's Penal Code execution, as an instrument of a power project of an authoritarian regime, imposed in reason of a liberal modernity, which was not even able to transpose the limits of a conservative oligarchic. This thesis aims to confront the State's repressive action in juridical processes of crimes against the Republic internal security, with the constitutional guarantee of habeas corpus, which limited the State's punitive power, correcting illegalities and abuses of power of the republican authorities as indicative of an emergent citizenship. The thesis argues that the Republican elite, without any estimation of expanding the new regime legitimacy bases and expand civil guarantees, sought to achieve social control, calling the citizens who disregarded the power of authority and the political and social order established as dangerous enemies. Through quantitative and qualitative methods in History, this study used as research sources the remaining processes of the 1st Criminal Office of Juridical District of Franca existing in the Municipal Historical Archives "Captain Hipolito" since 1890 to 1902. This study allowed the understanding of conflicts involving judicial authority and the citizen in Franca city in that time of new social relationships resulting from the expansion of the coffee economy, the arrival of the railroad, the modernization of t... Resumen: El estudio hace un análisis historiográfico del inicio de la República y la creación y la anticipación de la entrada en vigencia del Código Penal 1890, como instrumento de un proyecto de poder de un régimen autoritario, por razón de una política liberal de la modernidad, que no podía ir más allá de los límites de un pensamiento conservador oligárquica. El objetivo de la tesis es comparar la acción represiva del Estado en los casos de delitos contra la seguridad interna de la República, con la garantía constitucional de hábeas corpus, que estableció límites al poder punitivo, corrigiendo las ilegalidades y los abusos de poder de las autoridades republicanas, como indicativo de un reciente la ciudadanía. La tesis sostiene que las elites republicanas, sin ninguna preocupación para ampliar la base de legitimidad del nuevo régimen y ampliar las garantías civiles, intentaron lograr el control social, llamando a los ciudadanos enemigos peligrosos que desrespeitavam el poder de la autoridad y el orden político y social establecido. De 1883 à 1939, après une période marquée par le drame lyrique wagnérien, de nombreux écrivains français ou francophones se sont engagés dans une collaboration avec un compositeur pour donner naissance à une œuvre opératique. Cette thèse étudie les relations humaines et le travail créateur qui ont pu s’instaurer entre hommes de lettres et musiciens. Elle explore de façon plus approfondie les livrets de cinq créateurs qui se distinguent par l'intérêt qu'ils ont porté au genre lyrique, mais aussi par la diversité de leurs livrets et de leurs collaborations : Catulle Mendès, Émile Zola, Jean Cocteau, Paul Claudel et Armand Lunel.Une première partie est consacrée à la genèse des œuvres lyriques, de la naissance du travail à quatre mains jusqu'à la création de l’œuvre (si elle a lieu). Chaque collaboration est une fenêtre sur l'homme et sur l'auteur : elle révèle son tempérament, sa vision esthétique et ses convictions. Elle permet également de mesurer l'investissement esthétique et humain de ces créateurs et d'aller sur les traces de leurs doutes, de leurs espoirs, de leurs blessures d'orgueil, de leurs vexations comme de leurs exaltations. Une seconde partie considère le livret en tant que matière poétique pour les écrivains : nous nous interrogeons sur l'opportunité que ce texte opératique peut représenter pour leur permettre d'exprimer un style personnel tout en s'adaptant à un support qui leur est généralement étranger. L'objectif est alors de questionner les apports esthétiques que les écrivains ont pu apporter au livret d'opéra, dans la mesure où faire appel à un « spécialiste » pouvait apparaître aux yeux des collaborateurs comme un « gage » de qualité littéraire : cette participation permet-elle de faire entrer le texte opératique dans la sphère de la littérature ?
From 1883 to1939, after a period dominated by the lyrical Wagnerian drama, many French or French-speaking writers started collaborating with composers to give birth to opera compositions. This thesis is a study of the human relationships and the creative work which was established between men of letters and musicians. It analyses more particularly the libretti of five creators who distinguish themselves by their interest in the lyrical genre, but also by the diversity of their libretti and of their collaboration : Catulle Mendès, Emile Zola, Jean Cocteau, Paul Claudel and Armand Lunel. The first part deals with the genesis of the lyrical works, from the beginning of the four-handed cooperation to the creation of the works (if it takes form ). Each collaboration opens a window on the man and on the writer : it reveals his temperament, his aesthetic vision and his convictions. It also measures the aesthetic and human investment of these creators and it permits to trace their doubts, their hopes, their wounded pride , their vexations as well as their exaltation. The second part examines the libretto as poetical creation for the writers : we ponder over the opportunity given by opera writing which allows them to express a personal style while adjusting to a medium generally unfamiliar to them. The aim is then to question the aesthical contributions which writers were able to bring to the libretto in so far as the calling in of a « specialist » could appear, in the eyes of their collaboraters, as a guarantee of literary quality. Can this participation allow opera writing to enter the sphere of literature ?

Les textes de Ludwig Philippson, Gustav Karpeles, Isidore Cahen, Hippolyte Prague, publiés dans l’Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums et dans les Archives Israélites entre 1848 et 1914, témoignent d’un incessant souci politique. De l’égalité politique des minorités juives et de leur discrimination à la réflexion sur les relations entre politique et religion, en passant par les nouveaux courants politiques du XIXe siècle, tels le nationalisme, le socialisme ou encore le sionisme, nombreux sont les thèmes liés à la politique qu’ils abordent dans leurs articles. C’est le discours politique tel qu’il se donne à voir dans leurs articles qu’il s’agit d’étudierdans cette thèse. La pensée politique des minorités juives en Allemagne et en France au XIXe siècle a déjà fait l’objet de diverses études. Certaines abordent la thématique dans une perspective nationale, d’autres adoptent, comme nous, une approche comparée, en soulignant essentiellement les différences de points de vue entre les deux collectivités juives. Ces recherches partent du principe que l’Allemagne et la France sont structurées différemment, notamment en ce qui concerne les conceptions de la nation, les rôles joués par la religion et, partant, le mode d’émancipation des juifs, pour en déduire que la réalité des minorités juives et leur façon de penser, de sentir et d’agir l’est aussi. S’il ne s’agit pas de nier une certaine influence du contexte national sur lafaçon dont les journalistes voient le monde, la conviction qui anime le présent travail est que les contextes nationaux apparemment différents ne doivent pas nous empêcher de voir que leurs discours politiques obéissent à une logique commune. La thèse que nous nous proposons de démontrer dans cette étude consiste à dire que les discours politiques des juifs allemands et français, loin de former deux discours disjoints et opposés, se sont mutuellement rencontrés et fertilisés pour former un discours largement transnational. Grâce à leurs revues, il existait en effet de nombreux contacts entre les journalistes qui pourraient expliquer, entre autres, les parallèles et ressemblances dans leur manière d’aborder certaines questions politiques
The articles published by Ludwig Philippson, Gustav Karpeles, Isidore Cahen and Hippolyte Prague inthe Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums and the Archives Israélites between 1848 and 1914 show a constant concern for politics. Their writings deal with such topics as equal rights for – and discrimination against – Jews, the relationship between politics and religion, the new political movements of the 19th century like nationalism, socialism or zionism. The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to study the political discourse that manifests itself in the articles these journalists published in these journals. The political thought of Jewish minorities in 19thcentury Germany and France has been at the center of many scholarly works. Some of them adopt a national perspective, others – like the present study – chose a comparative framework approach, focusing essentially on the differences between the two Jewish communities’ points of view. These works are based on the assumption that Germany and France show basic structural differences, particularly with regards to the conception of nation, the role of religion and subsequently the emancipation model adopted for Jews, inferring that the same is true for the Jewish communities, their way of thinking, feeling and acting. While not denying the influence of thenational context on the way the journalists see the world, this dissertation rests on the conviction that it should not prevent us from seeing how their political discourses share a common logic. Its claim is that the political discourses of German and French Jews, far from being disconnected or opposed, did meet and influence one another to form a largely transnational discourse. The mere existence of these journals created contacts between the journalists that could, among other factors, explain the parallels and similarities in their political approaches

Abstract The weft of the fabric of the Young Turk movement was its distinct ideology. During the CUP’s formative phase, this positivist, social Darwinist, and biological materialist dogma was conspicuous. Later, as various groups gathered beneath the CUP banner, the motivating ideology had to be submerged, and evidence for it was barely visible, as if veiled by a mist. Today only a careful reader able to ferret meaning from between the lines will discern that this philosophy continued to lead during the later phase of the CUP. Intellectual members came to the CUP already knowledgeable about its ideological basis. An entire generation having become imbued with western ideas while attending college in the Ottoman Empire had embraced this philosophy, so fundamental to the original Young Turks. It is misleading, therefore, to study the “lists of detrimental individuals” prepared by Ottoman ambassadors. Because evidence of support for the Young Turks cannot be found in the highly censored Ottoman press, one might easily conclude that every intellectual was an admirer of the sultan there are so many praises of the sovereign. For instance, a person who praised the sultan lavishly in a domestic journal expressed his enmity only after he fled to Egypt and became a participant in the Young Turk movement.
