This article is an inquiry into the possible origin of the title of Vladimir Nabokov’s second Russian novel King, Queen, Knave (Korol’, dama, valet, 1928). It proves a long-forgotten hypothesis that the title’s likely source is a lesser-known fairy-tale by Hans Christian Andersen, published in several translations into Russian in Berlin and Riga émigré newspapers at the very end of the 1920s. Władysław Emanuel Lubomirski (1824–1882) was a Polish amateur naturalist who amassed a large collection of molluscs; this included specimens, partly collected by Konstanty Roman Jelski (1837–1896) and Jan Stanisław Sztolcman (Stolzmann) (1854–1928) in the Neotropics. Jelski travelled through French Guiana and Peru between 1865 and 1879. Sztolcman joined him in 1875 and worked in Peru and Ecuador until 1881.

A new species of ephemerellid mayfly, Cincticostella eburasp. nov., is described based on larvae collected in a stream from Nan Province, Thailand. This new species is classified in the nigra complex of the genus Cincticostella based on morphological and COI phylogeny evidence. The new species is closely related to C. nigra (Uéno, 1928) and C. funki Martynov, Selvakumar, Palatov & Vasanth, 2021 based on body colour pattern. Investigation of the chorionic structure of the new species showed similar details to those of other species within this species complex. The phylogeny also placed this species into a monophyletic group with C. nigra (Uéno, 1928), C. elongatula (McLachlan, 1875) and C. fusca Kang & Yang, 1995.

A presente pesquisa propõe a análise das relações entre criadas e patroas, na cidade de São Paulo, entre as décadas de 1870 e 1920, a partir das diferenças étnicas, sociais e de gênero (re)produzpidas no espaço doméstico. Utilizando como principal corpo documental os manuais de prescrição de conduta (manuais de etiqueta, de economia doméstica, de puericultura e de higiene e saúde), o intuito é compreender a formação identitária a partir do uso de objetos e espaços, entendidos estes como indutores de comportamentos e hábitos corporais.
This work is an attempt to analyze the relations between servants and mistresses, in São Paulo, between the 1870s and 1920s, from ethnic, social and gender differences (re)produced in the household. Considering different kinds of manuals etiquette, housekeeping, childcare and hygiene and health we intend to understand how identities are connected with the use of objects and spaces in the house.

Cette thèse aborde la question des liens entre système éducatif et émergence de l’identité nationale dans le Guatemala de la Réforme Libérale. Depuis les premières lois instaurant un appareil éducatif à la charge de l’Etat (1875), jusqu’à la première apparition de la nation parmi les objectifs de l’école publique (1927-1928), ce travail analyse les lois, discours, manuels scolaires et rapports d’activités du Secrétariat à l’instruction Publique pour en discerner les fondements idéologiques et saisir la construction progressive d’une identité nationale complexe. Après avoir étudié la fondation du système à la fin du XiXe siècle et ses objectifs affichés, ce travail aborde le « problème de l’indien », puis le centraméricanisme reflété par l’école,avant de détailler la politique éducative d’Estrada Cabrera puis les réformes de 1927-1 928, qui voient enfin la formation d’une identité nationale inscrite au rang des objectifs de l’école publique
This thesis deals with the links between the educational system and the birth of a national identity in the Guatemala of the Liberal Reform. From the first laws establishing a state-funded educational apparatus(1875) to the first occurrence of the nation as one of public school’s objectives (1927-1928), this study analyses the laws, speeches, school books and activity reports of the Public Instruction Secretary to examine their ideological significance and grasp the progressive construction of a complex national identity.After studying the foundation of the system and its declared objectives in the late 19 century, this analysis focuses on the “Indian issue”, then the “Central-americanism” mirrored by school, then the educational policy of Estrada Cabrera, and finally the reforms of 1927-1 928, which made the establishment of a national identity one of public school’s official objectives

Esta tesis doctoral estudia las prácticas sexuales entre varones, especialmente el delito de sodomía en Chile desde 1875 hasta 1928. La novedad de la investigación radica en el análisis por un lado de las fuentes ligadas a la medicina y el derecho penal y de las provenientes de los procesos criminales de sodomía. La primera parte de la investigación se estudia una historia del delito-pecado de sodomía por medio de las legislaciones, los tratados y comentarios del derecho penal chileno y las discusiones para la redacción del Código Penal de 1874. En Chile entre 1541 hasta 1875 se utilizó la legislación de la monarquía española que sancionaban la sodomía. Posteriormente, después de la entrada en vigencia del Código Penal de 1874 el delito de sodomía siguió vigente hasta el año 1999. La segunda parte de esta investigación analiza los saberes que emplearon los médicos y los abogados chilenos para patologizar y condenar las prácticas sexuales entre varones, desde los diversos enfoques de las ciencias de la vida que circularon en el mundo académico y la opinión pública de la época analizada: la medicina legal francesa, la teoría de la degeneración, la criminología italiana, la criminología de Lyon y la psicopatología. Estos enfoques médicos no sólo fueron utilizados en el ámbito médico sino que también en el derecho penal para explicar “científicamente” el artículo 365 del código penal chileno que condenaba a los acusados por el delito de sodomía a tres años de prisión. Analizamos la recepción de la medicina legal francesa a través del compendio de medicina legal publicado por el médico chileno Federico Puga Borne que patologiza la sodomía siguiendo los criterios de Ambroise Tardieu. La teoría de la degeneración que señala en sus postulados sobre “los degenerados” y “taras hereditarias”, en los escritos de los abogados Tomás Ramírez, Enrique Broghamer y de un escritor anónimo. Se estudiará la recepción del concepto homosexual con el primer escrito chileno del tesista Salvador Nechochea. En la tercera parte de esta investigación se estudio el delito de sodomía en Chile 1875 a 1928 desde la perspectiva de los noventa y tres procesos criminales pesquisados que corresponden a los expedientes judiciales que fueron extraídos del Archivo Nacional Histórico con sede en Santiago de Chile de las cajas y legajos correspondientes a los catorce fondos judiciales del crimen. En esta parte de la tesis se analizaron las diferentes prácticas sexuales de la sodomía pasando por la sodomía consensuada, la violación entre adultos y la violación a menores. Se estudio la importancia y el rol de los diferentes enfoques médicos y su real aplicación en los procesos criminales seleccionados. Asimismo se describió los roles de los diferentes actores involucrados en los procesos criminales: acusados, acusadores, padres de los niños, jueces, policías, testigos, procuradores, promotores fiscales y médicos informantes.
This PhD dissertation studies the sexual practices between males, specially the sodomy crime in Chile from 1875 to 1928. The novelty of the research is based on the analysis of the sources linked to medicine and criminal law, and those stemming from sodomy’s criminal procedures. The first part of this research studies a history of sodomy’s crime- sin, through legislation, treaties, and commentaries in the Chilean criminal law, as well as from discussions when writing the Criminal Code in 1874. In Chile, from 1541 until 1875, it was used a legislation from the Spanish Monarchy, sanctioning sodomy. Later, after coming into force the Criminal Code from 1874, the crime of sodomy was still valid until 1999. The second part of this research analyses the knowledge’s, used by Chilean doctors and lawyers, to condemn the sexual practices between males from different approaches in life sciences, circulating in the academic world and popular opinion from the époque: the French Legal Medicine, the theory of degeneration, the Italian criminology, the criminology from Lyon, and the psychopathology. These medical approaches were not only used in the medical area, but also in the criminal law to explain “scientifically” the article 365 of the Chilean Law Code, which condemned the defendants during three years in jail. I analyze how French Legal Medicine was received through the Legal Medicine compendium, published by the Chilean doctor Federico Puga Borne, who pathologizes sodomy according to the criteria of Ambroise Tardieu. The theory of degeneration points out the “depraved” and “hereditary imperfections” in the writings of the lawyers Tomás Ramírez, Enrique Broghamer and an anonymous writer. In this research, it is studied the concept of “homosexuality” through the first Chilean writing of the thesis student Salvador Nechochea. In the third part of the research, it is studied the crime of sodomy in Chile from 1875 to 1928, throughout ninety-three criminal procedures, corresponding to judicial records, found in fondos judiciales del crimen from the Archivo Nacional Histórico, based in Santiago de Chile. In this part, it is analysed different sexual practices of the sodomy, including agreed sodomy, rape between adults and violation to minors. It was studied the importance and role of different medical approaches, as well as their application in the criminal procedures selected. Additionally, it was described the roles of different actors involved in the criminal procedures: defendants, prosecutor, children’s parents, judges, police officers, witnesses, attorneys, public prosecutor, and informant doctors.

Nous avons appelé cet assemblage le « Spectacle des Siècles », suivant la formule publicitaire rencontrée sur l’affiche d’un de ces films, Noah’s Ark (M. Curtiz, 1928). Les films du Spectacle des Siècles ne se confondent pas avec les films historiques ou bibliques également mis en scène dans le cinéma muet, et qui supposent une action unique et une diégèse centrée autour de la période reconstituée. Les films étudiés font dialoguer passés et présents en relatant une multiplicité d’époques, de décors, d’actions et de personnages. Cette recherche se propose de mettre en lumière outre la variété des contenus, les diverses solutions d’assemblage élaborées par ces films pour aboutir à l’harmonie d’une œuvre cohérente. Les formes originales imaginées par les cinéastes font apparaître les multiples passages, transferts et métamorphoses de ces parallèles entre le passé et le présent, l’ancien et le nouveau. Elles interrogent ce que les films ont à dire sur leur siècle, en instaurant un présent démultiplié et orienté vers de nouvelles promesses. Ainsi les films du Spectacle des Siècles donnent à lire un moment de l’histoire du cinéma muet américain qui connut une brève période d’activité
Between 1916 and 1928, some American silent films are in search of putting together one or several stories set in the past (historical, ancient, biblical) and one story set in the modern times, thus displaying complex cinematic forms conspicuously articulated. We called this assembling the « Spectacle of the Ages », according to the advertising formula encountered on the poster of one of these films, Noah’s Ark (M. Curtiz, 1928). The films of the Spectacle of the Ages are not to be confused with biblical or historical films – also produced in silent cinema – which assume a single action and a diegesis focused on the reenacted period. The films we are to sudy here confront the past with the present, by telling multiple ages, sets, actions and characters. Beyond the variety of these stories, this research aims to highlight the various assembling solutions created by the filmmakers to achieve a coherent and harmoniously shaped work of art. These cinematic forms show various passages, translations, metamorphosis of the parallels between the past and the present, the old and the new, thus revealing something of their Age and of a promising future. We perceive in the Spectacle of the Ages a short-lived moment in the history of American silent cinema

The present work named “Traditional illustrated tale: A contribution” intends to reflect about the legacy of tales in Illustration and oral tradition, carrying out an illustration project. The investigation began in the origins of tale to contextualize its cultural roots and the persistence of certain narratives over the ages. With the famous collections of the brothers Grimm in the beginning of century XIX, traditional tales where recognized for their historical value as a reflection of people’s identity. This nationalist character associated to the Romantic Movement, appealed to several authors that collected tales in their countries. With the turn of the century there is a golden age in children's book illustrations and many authors turn to traditional tales has a great source with creative potential. The appeal of this illustrated books it´s in the diversity of stories and fantastical elements that bring to live the imagination of children and adults alike. I join this book illustration tradition with my practical work, by choosing a Portuguese traditional tale. This choice had in mind the disclosure of the Portuguese oral tradition unowned to me. Regarding the tale, the theoretical work consists of a systematization of research on the traditional tale and the contributions of the artists who illustrated it. There is also the theoretical foundation that accompanies the practical work, the influences, justification of stylistic options and artistic movements. The last part of the work is dedicated to the illustration project. I describe all the experience in a report of the process, reflecting about the difficulties, the learning and considerations on the illustration experiment. I present the different fases of the process from the sketches to the exploration of materials and their final result in the form of a model. Theory and practice complement each other to establish my course throughout this year of research and work and from which results the present dissertation

Abstract Joseph-Maurice Ravel was born in Ciboure near Saint-Jean-deLuz, Basses-Pyrenees, on 7 March 1875 and died in Paris on 28 According to the critic Gustave Samazeuilh, some of the music of the first and third movements of this Concerto originated about 1914 in an unfinished score for piano and orchestra titled Zaspiakbat (Basque for “the seven are one”). Ravel originally intended to play the Concerto itself on his 1928 American tour, but as things turned out, he only began work on the score in 1929. The next plan was for him to give the premiere in March 1931 with Willem Mengelberg and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, but the project was delayed when Ravel received and immediately got to work on a commission to write a concerto for piano lefthand for the Austrian one-armed pianist, Paul Wittgenstein. Only after that was accomplished in 1930 did Ravel return to “his” concerto, completing it Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff was born at Semyonovo, district of Starorusky, Russia, on 1 April 1873 and died in Beverly Hills, California, on 28 March 1943.
